Pieman: The Papa D Story is the story of one man's journey to self during a special time in his life. A time that fell into place when he learned to let go and trust his intuition.
It is also a business adventure towards the end of his working life, with plenty of obstacles to overcome. It might have never been a success if he hadn't opened his mind and accepted that things can go 'right' sometimes.
It was a time when he let the magic happen, and found himself on a journey searching for the secret to life through comfort foods.
Pieman: The Papa D Story, co-authored by June and Dennis Bourgo, is one of those stories that you could listen to sitting by the fireside as Papa D, the nickname for Dennis Bourgo, paints the picture of his adventures in the pie business. Situated on the west coast of Canada, in a beautiful and pristine setting, Papa D, with retirement not far down the road, decides to start up a small home business, baking pies, some of which he remembers from his childhood days. He has to jump many hurdles along the way to finally open up his remote shop, but with a sign at the end of his long driveway, word of mouth soon spreads, and Papa D is selling pies at an ever-growing rate; moreover, he gets requests for certain pies, and also adapts with new recipes, all of which adds to its success. Intermingled with this story, are short and colorful snippets about his life. While this story may appear to be pastoral, it is actually very inspiring. Papa D, threads his own insights and realizations about his life and life in general, throwing in a few inspiring quotes, but most importantly, one walks away from this book with an enhanced appreciation of the beauty of life and the reconciliation we all face, that sometimes, our biggest dreams don't materialize, but what does come to be, is not a compromise, but a step on that road. I recommend this book. Put on a pot of coffee, or pop the Merlot, sit by the fireside, and just enjoy a good-old fashioned storyteller spinning a tale that many or most can relate to in some way.
Pieman – The Papa D Story, by Dennis Bourgo and edited by his wife, June V. Bourgo, is both an autobiography and a memoir. The writing of Pieman gives a great idea on how to begin to write a memoir. In this case, we jump into the life of Dennis Bourgo when he’s through with all the big dreams of chasing money. Though he seems to have an intense and genius mind full of ideas and working in the upper echelons of invention, something in him wanted a simpler life. That’s where we drop into his life. It would seem in order to write meaningful memoirs, one would pick a time that holds the most meaning to the writer. That seems to be what Dennis has done.
Pieman is written in a way that the story moves along at a fast clip. It held my interest from first page to last. I read it in one evening. I found it heartwarming to know that one person could give up a “good life” that had it’s share of ups and down, and replace with a simpler life. I read as Dennis followed his heart and found great reward for being himself and following his dreams. That is where guidance comes from. Follow your heart, and your gut. It proved to be the most rewarding part of his and his wife’s lives. Oh yes, there is much to be said about a wife who does not stop her husband from seeking that which makes him happy. This speaks volumes in favor of June who works various jobs allowing time for Dennis to build his pie business and become successful.
As I read about the quaint little location where they set up their pie shop, I felt I would check it out in a minute had I seen such a sign along the highway. Even as Dennis is setting up his business, it comes with its own set of struggles, but nothing like any disappointments he had known in the business world of his former endeavors. This is a wonderful true-life story of faith in one’s self and being strong enough to follow intuition. I believe anyone will enjoy reading it.
