A very cute story about keeping natural spaces clean--gasp, can it be, a non-preachy book about the environment? Unfortunately, the harsh neon tones dominating every page made my eyes ache, and I groan to think of this being a re-readable favorite. It looks less bright online, but in person you could see this book from space. The illustrations are fascinating (monochrome photographs with charming drawn animals in various levels of detail), I just wish I didn't have the urge to shove this deep into my library bag.
A gentle quick story-within-a-story environmental lesson told by Grandpa Hedgehog to his fledgling, "the little hedgehog" about the importance and power of slowing down, taking time to appreciate nature and developing a sense of community. As Grandpa Hedgehog's story goes, during the Rush Era, when everyone was too busy doing things in a rush, Quill is the lone wolf (pun intended) who refuses to rush but instead spends his days cleaning up the environment from those rushing (and littering) around him. But one day its too much and Quill falls over from exhaustion. This is the impetus needed for the community to gather 'round Quill, take responsibility for their own actions, and chip in. While the text/story is quite brief ~ abrupt almost ~ nothing seems missing, and the uniqueness of the illustrations makes this a stand-out picture book. The initial setting of Grandpa and little hedgehog shows both outside with all the forest animals and indoors with all the hedgehog family, reading books. Reading in trees outside, reading on couches and pillows around a cozy fire inside. All in a palette of florescent pink, so bright it jumps off the page. As the story-within continues, the background is set against photographs (from a trip Tolman took to the Scotland Highlands) overlaid and touched up with mixed media of gouache, watercolor, colored pencil, chalk, and ink. Alternating between the bright neon Barbie pink and a much softer, yet still vivid cerulean, then Pacific blue, depict the beauty of the mountains, forests, and sea that Quill is trying to retain. This quiet (except for the pink!) environmental story is a welcome treat from international Dutch artist Marije Tolman.
Mixed media illustrations by author/illustrator Marije Tolman take center stage in this picture book that seems to be trying to tell young readers to slow down and enjoy the beauty of the world around them or maybe to encourage them to take care of that world or maybe a musing of what hedgehogs might be talking about during their hibernation. (Yes, I was a bit confused about the intent.) Regardless of the message intended, art lovers will appreciate the way Tolman’s photos of Scottish Highlands were turned into risograph prints and then drawings made from gouache, watercolor, colored pencil, chalk and ink were added.
Recommended for art classrooms and for children’s library collections that have readers who will appreciate the illustrations and the animals that play through the pages.
A grandfather hedgehog tells a story about the Terrible Rush Era when the animals trashed the forest. Only one animal, Quill the hedgehog, worked to clean up the forest, mountain, and sea. But there was so much work to do that he collapsed and needed to sleep through the winter. When he woke up, Quill saw that the others animals took up his project and the forest was restored. In his honor, the animals gave him a gold rake and made him the official Forest Keeper. This is a joyful picture book with a beautiful message about working together to protect our environment.
While all the other animals run around fast fast fast, Quill takes his time collecting rubbish and keeping the forest clean. But one day, it gets to be too much. The animals realize that they've been careless and inadvertently caused suffering, and they have to rethink their modes of life if they want everyone to be happy.
I truly adore the illustration style here: monochromatic photos with animals painted over the top. The story itself didn't hit as hard as I was hoping, but I admit I read this book mostly for the art.
This is a simple, short, very positive story, translated from Dutch, is perfect for bedtime. The message is timeless/poignant and resonates very well - stop and take the time to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. The illustrations - a mixture of photographs overlayed by colorful animal characters are unique. It is definitely eye-catching and good to read over and over again.
Everyone was always busy…the hedgehog kept things clean but was overwhelmed by never ending trash…he got a golden rake and a title…so what was the point? What is a kid (or anyone) supposed to get out of this book? I listened to audio and narrator was good, so points there. Plus illustration style was comforting
This philosophical take on our current Rush Era ethos encourages kids to be more like Quill, who takes time to enjoy the splendors of nature and keep the ecosystems clean of trash. Beautiful illustrations full of vibrant life energy depict a world made better through individual and collective efforts.
