Táto bohato ilustrovaná kniha prináša ambiciózne a prehľadne podanú históriu sveta v dosiaľ najrýchlejšie sa meniacom storočí. Zachytáva udalosti, postavy, ideológie, kultúrne premeny aj dramatickú politickú scénu týchto turbulentných čias od dvoch svetových vojen cez traumy z dekolonizácie až po technologické triumfy vesmírnych pretekov.
Popredný svetový historik Jeremy Black sa vo svojom podmanivom rozprávaní zaoberá rôznorodými témami, ako sú ruská revolúcia, veľká hospodárska kríza, studená vojna, globalizácia, klimatické zmeny či zrod internetu. Do svojho pútavého výkladu zahŕňa poznatky o životnom prostredí, demografii, kultúre a technológiách, rovnako ako známe politické spory, pričom prináša nový pohľad na tieto témy.
Texty dopĺňajú prehľadné mapy, ilustrácie a fotografie, ktoré dokresľujú kľúčové udalosti minulého storočia.
Jeremy Black is an English historian, who was formerly a professor of history at the University of Exeter. He is a senior fellow at the Center for the Study of America and the West at the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, US. Black is the author of over 180 books, principally but not exclusively on 18th-century British politics and international relations, and has been described by one commentator as "the most prolific historical scholar of our age". He has published on military and political history, including Warfare in the Western World, 1882–1975 (2001) and The World in the Twentieth Century (2002).
Poorly written. Summarises to the point of vagueness, yet still finds the word space for woke editorialising. A worthy project, it's a shame this is the result. Two stars because it looks nice.
A decent condensed read. It was a bit too concise at times and difficult to keep track of all the different events, but I realise that it's almost an impossible task for the author to put the history of the entire century in 250 pages so yes he deserves some slack.
P.s. I would like to mention that the history of the creation of Israel was very summarised and almost misleading in my opinion. (Speaking as someone who does know a bit of the history of that period and the Zionist movement)
I think that for $13 approx, you cannot get a compressed review of the most important events of the 20th century if you want an escape to the Internet and Wikipedia.
