Black metal and horror go together as well as PB&J. Bad food reference. I don’t know what black metal people eat and Gaahl isn’t exactly hanging around my house to ask. These stories all carry that atmosphere you associate with black metal; violent, ancient, occult, and most importantly eeeevil. I have a hard time cover to cover’ing anthos but this one was no problem. All the stories felt crafted into their own worlds; and the comics were bangers as well. While the stories are all themed with a black metal motif, they all stand apart from one another in tone and story. Throw on Carving a Giant by Gorgoroth to loop while you read. K thx.

Notes from a Decaying Millennial:

I have been "Ride or Die" with Castaigne Publishing since its early days, as it crawled from the primordial ooze seeping from Gravely Unusual Magazine. That said, i always do my best to go into any book

Into the Crypt of Rays is the second volume of Black Metal Horror from Castaigne Publishing.
Like its preceding volume, Into the Crypt of Rays is not simply a collection of edgy stories, wrapped in corpse paint and leather. The psychic geography of Black Metal is complex, and at times problematic. Editor Edwin Callihan and the assembled authors mine it to present the reader with stories that evoke, some of Metal's most graphic album art. They are stories that speak to the strange, partially unearthed moldering bones of black metal; the occult, the supernatural, and appreciation of the baroque and and morbid realm of death.
Some of the included stories are accompanied with excellent illustrations that serves to deepen the experience. Beyond singular illustrations, I was happily surprised to find a number of short comics included well. reminiscent of both Gravely Unusual Magazine, and of any number of underground metal zines, and poster art.
Into The Crypt of Rays is an excellent addition to any horror library, and a choice addition for Fans of dark, anti-facist black metal.
