Law of Attraction

Rate this book
Nyx just can't seem to escape her eternal night, the very darkness she was named after. Angry at the world, her hatred is ravenous for none other than Beckham Hunt, captain of the ice hockey team.

Beckham loathes Nyx Taylor, that much he is certain of. Nobody boils his blood as she does and when she's hired to assist his team during championship season, he discerns that there's more to her than meets the eye. She was always the villain in his story. But, suddenly she's the plot twist he never saw coming.

Each glare and scowl and insult piles up, put under tremendous pressure by their mutual hatred. Yet, peeking through their fury clouded vision, they find the centre of their relationship blazing. Like two rival stars gravitating towards each other, Nyx and Beckham can do nothing when the law of attraction forces them to accept that passion doesn't always mean hatred, but perhaps something more.

I cried , I laughed, I related ,I felt and had deep thoughts when it came to this book.

A simple way to describe this story is like a complexed puzzle (silly, I know but I’m not the one good with words here, Raeesah is). Every chapter gives you something more ,something to look forward to and sometimes even more questions. Piece by piece the story unfolds until you get the bigger and brighter picture. The character development is admirable and you fall in love with the characters more and more as you go on.

I remember reading this on Wattpad and giving it 4 stars because of a certain chapter where too much was happening and too much was revealed in a short amount of time.

But the author already grew in her writing. The pace of this version is literally perfect and I can’t wait to see more of her and more of them since this is only book 1.

The writing is so so good and I love the fact that it handles issues in today’s society. This is not only a book to me but a guide to certain aspects of life and a reminder that you are able to overcome and grow. I’ve already highlighted and made notes on the e-copy and can’t wait to do it in the physical book. Definitely one of my top 5 this year and my comfort read.

Law of Attraction contains all my favorite tropes : found family, enemies to lovers, slow burn , sport romance, hockey guys

The characters: Phenomenal
The plot: Outstanding
The writing: Perfection
The author: Bright future ahead of her.
And don’t even get me started on the smut: 🔥🔥🔥

Law Of Attraction is the first book in the Universal Law Series by Raeesah Ambarker.

the only word to describe this book is: perfection.
i'm not even exaggerating when i say that this book is and will always be my favourite.

you know when a book is your comfort read? when you go to it and read it when you're feeling down? when, whenever you read it you have the same excitement you had when you first read it? yeah. this is that book. this is my core memory; one i never want to let go of.

i live for a book with all kinds of emotions and feelings with perfect balance; this was just that. it made me aware of so many issues going on in the world, taught me how to be myself and helped me regain my inner strength.
it had a vast mindset to it and i adored that. it definitely left a huge impact on me and will stay with me for the rest of my life.
the writing is PHENOMENAL! when i say this, i mean it with all in me.
it had me angry, happy, sad, confused, laughing, hurt and what not!
i have read very few books with such good composition. the way the author puts the emotions on the paper and makes us feel them through it- i can't.
i love rae for creating this beautiful piece of art, which simply makes you feel. feel through the words she puts up.

the smut was hot & steamy. the best it could get.

nyx and beckham had a mind boggling chemistry from the very beginning and you can just feel it through the screen. there's so much going on and- just, this book will leave you speechless.

join nyxie and beck in an adventure of a steamy, swoon worthy, angsty, enemies-to-lovers, sports romance!

rae's books are always so well written and put up.
and i just cannot wait to see her go places! she deserves the best, the moons, the stars, the whole damn universe.

i love you rae. i'm so proud of you and i can't thank you enough for having me as a beta for this gorgeous work of art.

I was really excited about this book because the cover was beautiful and it had a lot of tropes I like in it: hockey romance, friends/lovers to enemies to lovers, protective MMC, etc.

Unfortunately, while the main plot of the story was right up my alley, there were too many plot points that just didn’t make sense. I also found the dialogue to be a little awkward, and I didn’t really like the FMC. The book probably could have been 100-200 pages shorter with the removal of some of the excess plot points and it would have been a lot better.

Terribly juvenile. I only managed to get through four chapters before I decided not to waste my time. Even the first four chapters where confusing as hell. Random names get dropped without even explaining who they are.

If you're the author please stop reading.
This is one of the worst books I've ever read.
The FMC was so annoying and instead of developing she undevelops. They used trauma to "favor" the plot and it was so obvious and bad. She gives pick me vibes and its so wattpad 2012 wannabe.

*3.5 stars rounded down to 3 stars*

For as long as Nyx Taylor has remembered, she’s been trapped in an eternal night. Angry at the world, it’s no surprise when she channels that anger towards Beckham Hunt, former friend and the captain of the ice hockey team. For Beckham, the feeling is mutual. But when Nyx is hired to assist his team during championship season, he discovers there may be more to Nyx than meets the eye.

The strongest parts of LOA lie in the sisterhood of Nyx and her siblings and the subsequent friendships that form with Beckham and his friends. The relationships felt authentic, a lot of care was taken in the development of the storyline. With that being said, I think the book itself, being 550 pages, could have been reduced in length as there were a lot of details and scenarios that were repeated. Pinned as an enemies-to-lovers sports romance, the balance was well done. The hatred between the main characters was well-established at the start, however, despite the good banter between them, the constant back and forth between hatred and lust during the first half of the book gave me whiplash.

Nonetheless, this book was well-written and the spice was 🔥 The book deals with very graphic and triggering themes, but does have a very HEA. My biggest critique would be the use of Harry Potter references (4-5 times) even if the intention was harmless, it has triggering consequences.

While this isn’t a sub genre of romance I generally read and while I don’t consider myself the target audience, I’m sure that those who love sports romance, and who are dying to see it happen from dual POV, will love this book.

Thank you very much to the author for sending me this ARC in exchange for an honest review. This author shows great potential and I’m really looking forward to reading her future works.

TW: child abuse; domestic violence; mentions of substance abuse; alcoholism; emotional abuse; death; HP references.

hated how the girl best friend was only there to be set up for the next book. halfway through the book once the ML starts taking central focus. like wtf he sees her crying and doesn’t even mention it to his gf???? awful. ALSO WHY IS UCLA ALWAYS THE RIVAL SCHOOL IN THESE HOCKEY ROMANCE BOOKS… WE DON’T EVEN TECHNICALLY HAVE A TEAM!!!

So stinking cute. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it was a weeee bit drawn out in some areas. I love long and drawn out but it was even a little much for me. Although other than that I absolutely freaking loved this book

honestly, i think i’m dnf-ing this book halfway through. imo, it’s the perfect example of telling, not showing. it’s not a bad book by any means, but it’s just taking WAY too long to get to the point.

there are times where i’m pretty sure the author forgot what they wrote like, a page prior, but that could be me remembering things wrong. my main issue, however, was the amount of paragraphs in between dialogue. for example, Nyx and Beckham could be in the middle of an important conversation, and then they’ll go off on a rant about something that feels unrelated to the topic. a lot of these side rants just felt unneeded, or as if they could have been placed in another spot.

overall, some important things were brushed over way too quickly, and some unimportant facts were focused on for way too long. this is all in my opinion, though, so take my word with a grain of salt.

i would still recommend this book!! it’s just not the kind of book you read if slowburn isn’t your thing. it’s definitely taught me that i’m not one for books with slowburn THIS intense.

For all those who loved Icebreaker by Hannah Grace, definitely read this book!

We’ve got a somewhat steamy enemies-to-lovers romance with the beloved found-family trope. Except the villains of this story, I loved every character. Loved how much they all came to adore each other by the end🌹🥰

If I could go lower I would. The writing, bad. The plot, convoluted and bad. The characters, cliché and bad. The discussion of trauma and abuse, underdeveloped and used mainly as a plot device to make the female characters three dimensional. I don't even know how I finished it...

DNF, hating all men is not a personality trait, or makes you a feminist. This book reads like juvenile fanfiction with too many red flags to count.

DNF @ 20%. Struggling with this book for 500 pages wasn't worth the $5 I spent on the Kindle version.
Unfortunately, the writing was subpar to me. When I found out it was written on Wattpad and then published so its fans could have a physical copy, it all started to make sense. I think this book could've benefited from an editor. I found typos, and the phrasing throughout was just... weird and convoluted. Like everything was just off and written in a slightly more complicated or roundabout way than it needed to be.

For example:
"... my jaw dropped with how much they were going to pay me. My wallet already felt full, opposing how dusty it usually was."
"My annoyance at myself grew because my thoughts were stilled [yes that's a typo] plagued with Beckham and our two interactions today."

... She's a lil stiff.

It took me a few sentences longer than it should've to understand what was happening on the page. This made a pretty straightforward hockey romance oddly confusing.

all I know is that I loved this fucking book so much that I am still waiting for an update for the second book in this series

„I realised why men annoyed me so much. Because they thought I needed to be handled.“

go bitch 💋✨

„You’re just jealous!”
Nyx let out a genuine laugh, showcasing the dimples she buried so well with her perpetual scowl. “Bless your delusional heart,“

love her 😌✨🤍

„What belongs to me will find me,” she uttered, a petite smile gracing her lips.
I grinned. “Simple law of attraction, baby. You’re mine, I’m not leaving you. If you believe in anything, believe in that.“

DNF’d at page 49. I was already struggling with Nyx’s attitude (like, we get it, she believes men are lower than the dirt beneath her shoes. Hating men does not make you a feminist, you realize that, yes?) but the writing is what’s making me stop altogether.

Disclaimer: Please remember that these are my opinions and if you feel differently, that’s okay. Thanks!

Notes: POV = Dual 1st person, FMC & MMC
Main Characters: Beckham Rigel Hunt (MMC) is the twenty-one year-old captain of the USC Trojans and he started off willfully ignorant. I wanted to shake this man. There was clearly something else going on but he chose to believe that Nyx was just cruel.
Her lips parted, but no words came out. She shut her mouth, nodding to herself as if seeing me in a new light. I didn’t like that look.
“And don’t kid yourself, you wouldn’t have helped me.” I’d never felt more like an asshole than I did at that moment. Because there was truth to her statement. No, I wouldn’t have helped her.

He started realising that he didn’t know anything about her as the book went on, started to admit what he refused to see; that’s when I started liking him. After that, he practised patience, understanding, remorse, and protectiveness.
But now, it meant that I’d hated Nyx for nothing, my team had hated her for nothing, we’d put her through hell for nothing. They always followed the lead of their captain. I was their captain. And I’d hated Nyx.

Kennedy Nyx Taylor (FMC) was perfection incarnate from the very first page, at least for me.
“Didn’t God rain kindness down on his people?” I urged, aggravated at the fact that she wouldn’t tell me what the email had said. She shrugged. “I was standing under an umbrella that day.”

My very first thought was something along the lines of ‘oh, she’s confident and mean, I love it’ followed closely by the thought that she was very smart.

Side Characters: There are a lot of side characters here and many of them are basically main characters. Nyx’s three sisters: Annie, Poppy, and Indigo. They are all unique, but I love Poppy and Indigo just a little bit more. Indigo is a spit-fire and she’s adorable.
When I’d asked her what she did at school that was so tiring, she’d told me that dealing with other human beings was what distressed her.

Nyx’s best friend, Nailea (I am so excited for her story), Annie’s girlfriend, Beth, and a couple more that we don’t see as often but are just as important. We also have Beck’s best friends and teammates, like Sebastian (softy under the asshole exterior) and Grayson (has a secret but seems to be an absolute marshmallow). Beck’s parents, Helen and Anthony, and his coach Stanley Benson. The other teammates we see the most: Tristan, Oliver, Jasper, and Jairaj. I love them all.

Plot/Story: I’m not crying, you’re crying. We’re not going to talk about how many times you cried while reading this, don’t worry. This is a romance book, but the main 'problem' is secrets. Nyx is a complicated girl with more pain in her life than she ever deserved, and there are a lot of secrets surrounding her; some of them she keeps and some of them she doesn’t even know.

Romance: For a good portion of this book I wanted to punch Beckham in the face and wrap Nyx up in a forever-hug. Eventually he got me, being in his head when he realised everything and the guilt hit him was sweet.
They considered us the gentler sex, but men’s egos were the most fragile things I’d ever come across.

Quotes I Really Like:

Overall:
I loved this book. It’s 550 pages and I devoured it by accident. I was not planning on reading this in one day but I could not put it down.

𝐍𝐲𝐱 𝐓𝐚𝐲𝐥𝐨𝐫 (h) gets asked by the hockey team’s coach to help them because of her marketing and sports event management skills. Since she is studying the required courses and has experience with the team, it serves as a paid internship. The only issue is the boys on the team hate her because she defended the ex-captain despite his abusive nature towards them. 𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐡𝐚𝐦 𝐇𝐮𝐧𝐭 (H), captain of the USC hockey team, holds the biggest grudge towards her because he felt Nyx picked Nate over him when they were together. As a result, the two cannot stand in the same room together and pass insults whenever they are around each other. When he realizes there might be more to the story, he wants to get closer to Nyx to see if he can understand her better.

·˚ ༘₊· ͟͟͞͞꒰➳ 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞·˚ ༘₊· ͟͟͞͞꒰➳

The book was long, and half the time, I needed to figure out what was happening with the romance or the involvement of side characters. They walked on eggshells around each other and were never direct about what happened between them in the past; therefore, as the reader, you know something went wrong, but they never tell you what happened. It was 400 pages of insults and then the family drama that was supposed to explain their behavior around each other, but I did not love it. Beckham called Nyx a bitch straight up, and it was not cute. She was rude towards him, but did he need to say all that? I was just not a fan of these two from the start because they hurt each other for fun. He intentionally lied and told her he slept with someone else on her birthday, and she supposedly betrayed him because it would benefit him. Again, I was lost half of the time, and the book was just filled with random details and history I didn’t need. At one point, I dreaded reading this and wanted to be done with it. Everyone’s experience is different, and this happened to be mine. I did not love Nyx and Beckham together, but as individual characters, they were okay.

At times, I loved Nyx’s attitude and how she didn’t take shit from anyone and used it as a defense mechanism to push people away. Her character was well-written and thought out, but Beckham often pissed me off because he just insulted her without reason, and when he discovered her backstory, that is when he wanted to be nice. She didn’t need him as a savior; she just wanted him to understand how things went down with Nate. Mainly, I disliked that once that plot was resolved the book could have ended because the drama existed because of Nate, but it kept going, and he was never mentioned again. There was just a lot going on and I didn’t care for half of it after a while.

*. ⋆𝐎͢𝐕͢𝐄͢𝐑͢𝐀͢𝐋͢𝐋͢
I didn’t love this book, and I wish I did; not sure if I wasn’t in the mood for a book with these elements at this time, but it didn’t work for me. I will say I enjoyed the seven-year time jump epilogue and how they have a kid named Percy, but I am biased toward Percy Jackson. Also, it was odd that Beckham chose not to pursue a career in the NHL, considering this book lived and breathed hockey, but okay, go STEM boy!

Lots of things are going on in this book, some are pleasant, some are very disturbing and very much unpleasant, but they provide the story with more depth than would have otherwise been the case in this steamy "enemies"-to-lovers romance. While the romance is what this book revolves around and it does pick up towards the end, it is very slow burn at the beginning all the while gradually building in intensity. Nyx and Beckham are extremely flawed but also immensely lovable main characters, although especially Nyx's crude and rather vulgar language took some getting used to. (Sometimes subtlety is key and there's no need to spell everything out, especially all your horny thoughts). What I did love, though, was the whole found-family trope—I'm a sucker for it— So this book made me laugh, (almost) cry, warmed my heart and sometimes broke it a little . I would have read it in one sitting had it not been for the length of it—which is why I read it in two—needless to say I would totally recommend.

things i liked:
the setting
the little sister
the hockey team
things i didn’t like:
nyx is a bitch and acts justified in her actions when she is literally one of the worst people ive been forced to read about
hides behind her and her sisters’ abuse as a justification for RUINING the hockey team
acts as if being a feminist = hating men
not saying youre not allowed to hate men but creating a situation where it just looks like youre being sexually harassed to fuck with your male colleague is the furthest thing from feminism there could be
as a supporter of women's rights and wrongs, i would’ve liked her if the entire text didn’t portray everyone who opposed her as an asshole
beckham felt so very one dimensional that i dont have anything else to say about him
overall: ⭐
if i could rate this lower, i would, DNF. hated so much i had to create a goodreads account

I remember reading this book months ago and I forgot how much I loved it.
Indigo is obviously my favorite but in all seriousness, I love how this author write. The plot was amazing, I loved how she represented the main character and how strong she made her; it was so refreshing to see that.
One of the main reasons I give this book is a 3093483/5 was because it wasn't a book where the girl fell first or the boy fell first. They fell at the same time which was so sweet and touching for me.
