Inconveniently Wed #3

Longing for a Lady

Rate this book
Ever since making her London debut, Lavinia Bathurst has led a life filled with the things she always dreamed of: an endless array of parties and entertainments, a place within high society, and an earl whose actions will surely lead to a marriage proposal. That is, until her faith in the earl proves woefully misguided, and his desertion at a pivotal moment brings about her ruin. Facing exclusion from the world she so esteems, Lavinia seeks help elsewhere, from the only source she can still trust: the longtime friend with an unparalleled ability to cure and fix.

William Harris is a newly trained surgeon, studious and sensible in all areas but one. Since the age of fifteen, he’s been hopelessly in love with Lavinia Bathurst, a baron’s daughter far above his station. Nothing can come of his sentiments, of course, and when Lavinia leaves their Devonshire village for the bustle of London, he resigns himself to never so much as seeing her again. All until a year later, when she shows up at his door abandoned and desperate, begging for assistance. And the best solution, it seems, is for them to wed.

In a union born of necessity, love and passion can have nothing to do with it. Yet as Lavinia and Will adjust to a simple country life so different from the one they each envisioned, sparks fly between them in unexpected ways. Could the happiness Lavinia seeks be much closer to home than she thought? Could Will dare to hope that his affections are more than unrequited? Perhaps they can take the wreckage from a horrible situation and rebuild, turning their friendship into a true, loving marriage. As long as past afflictions don’t return to sweep it all away.

Jane Maguire is a Canadian author whose lifelong passions for history, writing, and love stories inevitably led her to begin penning historical romance novels. While her love of historical fiction spans all eras, she focuses her writing on high society in the regency period. She enjoys crafting stories with lots of angst, which makes giving her characters their happily ever afters all the more satisfying.
When she isn't at her computer writing and researching, you can find her vacationing in the Rocky Mountains, playing classical music on the piano, or simply curling up with a cup of tea and a good book. She lives with her husband, two kids, and a very floofy cat.

Healing wounds

Lavinia Bathurst is an immature and impulsive young woman. She dreams of a life of parties and fun in London's high society that shows her it's dark side.

In search of solutions to her mistakes, she seeks the help of her childhood friend, William Harris, who harbors feelings for her that he believed would never be reciprocated, for being a surgeon and therefore socially inferior, without thinking about what he could give up to help her.

They end up getting married and we then follow the young couple's journey, with their mistakes and successes, with a protector William and a Lavinia who learns from her mistakes to reframe what is really important.

This is my 5th book by Jane Maguire. She only has a total of 5 books out. I saw her recommended on one of my steamy FB groups and thought I’d give her a try. She told me herself in a FB author takeover, that she has steam but isn’t super steamy and she isn’t but her characters have plenty of sex and it is a little descriptive just not pages and pages of it. But it is nicely done. The first series I read of hers was, Rockliffe Dynasty and they were pretty good reads. I really like her writing and I feel she gets great depth in her characters.

At the beginning, I didn't feel I was as fully vested in the characters as I was in book 1 and 2 but don’t take that it took me a few days to read this to mean I didn’t like it. I got a new phone after 15 years and it took me all of one day just to set it up and play with it. So I pretty much lost a day of reading. Plus, even though I usually read and watch TV at the same time, a few of my regular shows had their season finales so I watched more than read. 😊

I really ended up liking William and Lavinia. Not a huge fan of her being with someone else before Will but it is what it is. They, as a couple and individuals really grew on me the more I read. They both really came in to being themselves and they showed more of their personalities. Overall a good read. I like this author and hope to read more by her.

I really enjoyed this book because it was a simple story with well written characters. I really felt the emotions between all the characters and found the big conflict towards the end to be heart wrenching but of course there's a HEA. I also appreciated that this story deviated from the common historical romance dynamic of the aristocrat man who is a rake and the woman who is a virgin. The story felt real and kept me interested from start to finish. I will definitely read other works by this author.

Superb.

You know what I loved best about this book? That Lavinia wasn’t afraid to show love and affection to Will. So often in romance novels we aren’t shown a woman’s nurturing side, or the side of her that initiatives intimacy or affection. Not with Lavinia though, she’s a go-getter 😘

Will she let her past and ill-advised choices destroy what could be …

I did not like much Lavinia at the beginning, she was exactly who she was said to be flighty and superficial. So while she was not a bad girl, she was also a selfish young woman who never thought beyond her own needs and wants.
Yet for all her flaws, she is the one left to deal with the aftermath of her ruination.
Even it is repeated again and again to never trust the words of a man who wants to lift your skirt, she trusted and now is paying the price of her gullibility. Yet going from the pampered spoiled daughter of a peer to a trademan’s bride she has a long road of learning in front of her. As while she has known her new spouse turned rescuer for a long time, she has not be groomed to be a simple man’s wife. Why going from dressing to partying to learning her way in the kitchen and his her new husband’s life, will need more than her willingness to adapt to her new tasks.
William’s heart had been lost to Lavinia a long time ago, even knowing it was a senseless infatuation, she being to far above him, a mere fellow working as a surgeon. Until he could be the one to offer her respectability even if it is far away from her usual circle.
For her, he is prepared to risk his future happiness if it is to help the woman who has lingered for years in a secret part of his heart. But will his gentleness and care be enough when she is to settle into a completely different life, miles away from what she has expected for herself.

While William stays true to himself, kind, caring and protective, Lavinia has to grow up, learn from her errors and try to not repeat them but also trust others to help her when after been betrayed once and left with few options, she had to find herself a way out.

3.5 stars barely squeaked up to 4. I would recommend reading the first two books in this series first; this one jumps into the storyline with the assumption that you know a bit about the main characters' history.

The first half of this was a bit of a chore. I like this author's writing style, I just don't have the patience for shallow MFC's who take forever to get a clue, and all the books lately that rely on characters' irritating traits and angst to take the place of plot is just wearing me out. I typically love a book with a physician as hero, though, so I stuck this one out.

The main message, at least, is a good one (tip o' the hat to the Rolling Stones): While we can't always get what we want...sometimes we get what we need.

From the beginning, I knew I was going to have issues with Lavinia. She shares a rather steamy kiss with William just as she's about to start her first season, but he lacks confidence to pursue a relationship due to their difference in social station so he moves on to complete his medical training. I was expecting some circumspect behavior on her end, as a result of the kiss. Maybe some pining? But by the next year she's gotten herself in the family way due to a tryst with a titled snob at a house party. Supposedly she trusted the snob to marry her, but does she have any deep feeling for him?

Further, Lavinia expects William to wave a magic wand and solve her "problem" (after all, hadn't he previously saved her life?). Lots of angsty dialog here (She: This is worse than when I thought I would die. He: I've failed her). Yes, Lavinia does have a character arc as a result of their marriage, but it takes a goodly while, and meantime I was having flashbacks to Madame Bovary from high school. I couldn't stand her, and I didn't like Lavinia much better until the last 25% or so.

William is a good guy who seems to put way too much responsibility on his shoulders. He's the main reason I squeaked this to 4 stars.

Plotwise, as mentioned, not much happens. There is a miscarriage, as forewarned at the beginning, which triggers some character growth. Illness, return of the ex, etc. But nothing really impacted me all that emotionally. Again, I think it goes back to how Lavinia was presented through most of the book. There's almost an objectivity by the author that didn't allow me to see her as flesh and blood.

Overall, good MMC, good message, but the MFC didn't draw me in. I had the same issue with the MFC in the previous book, so there seems to be a pattern here.

I’ve been absolutely loving the Inconveniently Wed series and I think this book may be my favorite!

Will Harris has always been a little bit in love with Lavinia Bathurst, but, as the daughter of a baron, she’s meant to marry a lord and not a country surgeon. However, when Lavinia finds herself in trouble, Will helps her by marrying her. While everyone thinks Lavinia is making a mistake by leaving the balls and city life behind, she soon finds she enjoys her country life, and her life with Will, and both wonder if this marriage of convenience can turn into more.

Lavinia starts out in a terrible predicament and you can’t help but feel bad for her - the same world that promised her a life of comfort and balls and excitement quickly expels her. However, as the story progresses, you see there is much depth to Lavinia and she quickly settles into country life, becoming part of the community.

Will is the classic good guy, who loves Lavinia enough to help her in her time of need, although he fears he won’t be able to give her the life she wants and deserves. However, as he and Lavinia grow in their marriage, they see a strength and resilience in one another and that helps them turn a marriage of convenience into something more.

As the story unfolds, you see there’s a lot of secrets and unspoken words between Will and Lavinia and it causes tension in their relationship. I enjoyed watching them work through that to get their HEA.

If you are a fan of marriages of convenience and some medical drama, you’d enjoy this!

Longing for a Lady is book 3 in the Inconveniently Wed series by Jane Maguire, but it can easily be read as a standalone. Indeed, this is my first time reading this author and I had no issues following along, and I will look for more of her books.

Lavinia Bathurst is the younger daughter of a Baron and has had an attachment to Will Harris, a young surgeon, since she was a young girl. When she finds herself compromised, and left to fend on her own by a man she thought was a serious suitor, Will steps in to rescue her, not for the first time.

Longing for a Lady is the story of these two seemingly incompatible people, from different social classes, and their struggles to learn to know and trust each other in their new marriage.

I really enjoyed this book, although there were a few times when I wanted to shake Lavinia because I was getting so frustrated with her actions. Still, this book kept me reading into the wee hours to find out how our couple achieved their happy ending.

This is a refreshing change if you're looking for something that takes place outside of the ballrooms, and high society of the Regency period.

Lavinia's and Will's story brought together two people from different social classes in a beautiful way. As children, they played together and when both reached adulthood, Will goes off to train as a surgeon and Lavinia makes her debut as a debutante.

It is during one of these balls, that Lavinia makes a terrible mistake and finds herself in a pickle with the "wonderful" chap ditching her for a duke's daughter (boo! hiss!!). Not wanting to marry the only other option presented to her by her parents, she runs to beg her long-time childhood friend to provide a possible solution to her problem. Will offers to marry her and their story takes off slowly.

It's only in the later part of the book that they finally come to love and appreciate each other and find a love that will stand the test of time.

A slow burn for sure but quite rewarding if you're willing to stay the course.

Reunions, Surgeons, Secrets:
We find Lavinia absolutely shocked at what the morning newspaper
is reporting. Her life is now changed forever.
Reaching out to Will her childhood friend who saved her before.
Can he save her again or will he even want to help her?
That sets this emotional story on a turbulent path of discovery for both Will and Lavinia.
At first, I felt she was the spoiled bell of the ball but by the end she won me over, especially after she befriended Dash the dog.
There were some unpleasant situations that caused them some trouble but
they do find happiness and the epilogue was a wonderful ending.
My first time reading this author and I would enjoy reading more of her stories.

Sigh….I’ll take one Will to go please! What a guy! Lavinia believed Lord Carington when he said he planned to marry her and found herself both jilted and increasing. She turned to Will for help, as he was the one person in her life who always came through for her. When Will offered to marry her, she knew her life would be different, as she was a Baron’s daughter used to luxury and ton events, and he was a surgeon. What follows is an emotional story wherein trust must overcome fear in order to create the loving relationship that both Lavinia and Will desire. This is a story of ups and downs with surprises and conflict created by past admirers. It has endearing moments as well as steamy ones….and a bone deep love that is enviable. Loved it!.

I loved this sweet, delicate book, even if in my opinion it would have benefited from a more substantial plot. The story is mostly centered on Lavinia, the heroine, who made her appearance in the previous book of the series and seemed quite vain and flighty, even if never spiteful or mean. Here we get to know her better and even if I must confess that I still did not particularly like her for half the book, I enjoyed seeing her grow and learn to appreciate the important things in life. Will is so sweet, a real cinnamon roll of a hero who’s too honorable and decent for his own good. As always, I loved the writing with its flawless prose and old-fashioned flavor.

Jilted and compromised, baron's daughter Lavinia turns to William, a young surgeon, and the only man she can truly rely on. He's secretly in love with her, but until now, she's always been beyond his reach. A marriage of convenience is the only thing that can save her reputation, but will the difference in their stations get in the way of true love?

Lavinia starts out as a carefree, flirtatious girl, but circumstances force her to become more circumspect. William is the opposite, and Lavinia's lightness brings him newfound joy. But with such different backgrounds, they inevitably make missteps along the way. They're a likeable couple who do their best to evolve for the sake of their marriage.

Thanks, Booksprout, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.

She came to understand what was important in life
This tale was full of drama with parts that were heartbreaking and heart wrenching yet there is also some heartwarming parts too. Lavinia and Will were interesting characters and seeing the growth of these two was splendid. Lavinia suffer so much true some was brought on by her own actions but other things just happened. Will was lovely and a truly awesome character to meet. You should expect high emotions in this well written piece and the ending brought a certain peace to the heroine excellent job by the author. Lady Lavinia and Will have been friends since she pulled him up into a tree and later when she was deadly ill as a physician took care of her. When she goes off to London for her first season Will knows she will come back with an offer of marriage even though he has loved her he knows he is well below her station. What he did not expect was for her to come back with child and begging him to marry her because the father of her child was bethrothed to another. There are some serious illnesses and her ex coming back that they have to deal with but in the end they find the happiness they have longed for.

Great story!

Will met Lavinia when he was but a child, after the loss of his parents. He went to live with his Uncle, a surgeon. Livonia came from money but was a friendly guiding light. She was friendly to all. Well Lavinia became pregnant and her intended decided to go for a higher title and more money. So he left her. Devastated she went to Will for help, he asked her to marry him. Through so many thoughts on both parties, there were many ups and downs. You need to read this riveting story!

For once not a regency romance focussed on Dukes and other ‘senior’ nobility, but a surgeon and a Baron’s daughter. It also different in that it deals with a lady ruined at a house party and left pregnant. So often in this genre that tends to happen to minor characters and we hear of them disappearing away from polite society.
I did enjoy the story, though at one point I did wonder if the story would progress. Thankfully that was short lived, so definitely worth reading it right through.

Wonderful

I definitely loved seeing this change in a story, yes she was a lady who was ruined by an earl and she could have been married off to some old guy who would have made her life miserable instead she chose the man who made her feel safe and secure, he in turn gave her that security and reassurances that she desperately needed despite her feeling insecure. However after her insecurities start to take a backburner she starts seeing that what she's ever wanted and needed was right in front her for many years and that he has loved her for who she is, flaws and all.

A Wonderful story from beginning to end.

I loved this series and I'm glad I finally decided to read it. I look forward to what Jane Maguire has next.

I liked this story, Will is really a great guy, everything about him is attractive. Lavinia, for most of the story, is superficial, self absorbed, shallow and immature. Living her life outside of the ton and its constant glittery entertainments, she finds nothing to do with herself, as she has no talents beyond being a belle of the ball! Will is a doctor, busy helping others, while Laconia spends her days mostly doing nothing worthwhile. She grows up as the story progresses, and comes to value the new life she has with Will, it just takes her the entire book to get there

Inconveniently Wed is probably one of the only series that I have ever actually completed, so that alone should tell you how good it is! I have thoroughly enjoyed the whole trilogy, with each book being a different take on one of my favourite tropes: marriage of convenience.

The final instalment, Longing for a Lady, follows Lavinia, a baron’s daughter, and William, a surgeon. After a season in London, Lavinia finds herself pregnant and unmarried (not a spoiler, we learn this right away!). Out of options, she turns to her childhood friend, who had saved her life once before. But, unbeknownst to Lavinia, William is already in love with her…

I didn’t know whether I was going to like this book, as I had found Lavinia a bit annoying in the previous one. However, I should have known that Jane Maguire was setting up the perfect story through which her character could grow and flourish. Lavinia’s journey to contentment is heartwarming. Likewise, William, a tender but competent hero, gives a masterclass in “it’s always been you”. As with the first two, the side characters and setting complete this cosy yet emotional read. Don’t miss these historicals! Please note there is a content warning for early pregnancy loss.

She loved him long before she realized it. He has loved her for the longest time. Life brought twist and turns until they found each other’s HEA. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, specially the part about the dog. Remember the story where the wife says the new dog is not allowed up on the couch and by evening, it is on the bed with the couple? An LOL moment!.
