Bridesmaids meets Emily in Paris —in London—in this hilarious and heartfelt story of one handsome neighbor, one no-good ex, and the summer Amy Duffy makes the comeback of her life.
Her past is a mess. But her present is about to get delicious.
Amy is more than one disastrous night of drunken revenge on her boss/ex-boyfriend’s Audi—the night that tanked her rising TV producer career and led to a hasty move to London for a fresh start. She is thirty years of awesomeness. At least, that’s what Amy tells herself every morning before trekking to her mediocre job making trailers at a failing British TV channel.
Two years later, she’s finally starting to believe it. Sparks are flying between her and Jake, her handsome new downstairs neighbor, and there’s a competition at work that just might get her career back on track while bringing her and Jake even closer. But then, in a twisted turn of fate, the ex-boyfriend who wrecked her life is hired as her new boss and past and present are about to epically, hilariously collide.
Lizzy Dent (miss)spent her early twenties working in Scotland in hospitality, in a hotel not unlike the one in this novel. She somehow ended up in a glamourous job travelling the world creating content for various TV companies, including MTV, Channel 4, Cartoon Network, the BBC and ITV. But she always knew that writing was the thing she wanted to do, if only she could find the confidence. After publishing three young adult novels, she decided to write a novel that reflected the real women she knew, who don't always know where they're going in life, but who always have fun doing it. The Summer Job is that novel.
What’s inside this book with the adorable hot pink cover?
A whole lot of FUN and a bit of revenge….🤪
Amy Duffy, a N.Y. developmental executive for TV shows, is getting ready for her cousin Ruth’s wedding when her boyfriend (and boss) Chris utters those dreaded four words…”we need to talk”.
Nothing good ever follows THAT sentence.
He drops his bombshell revelation, and she ends up in a bar instead of at the wedding where she was meant to be a bridesmaid. Following one (or six!!) shots too many, her most embarrassing and unflattering moment is captured on video and shared with the World.
Nothing good ever follows THAT much alcohol.
She flees to London, where her friend and former colleague, Maggie, was able to get her a job that she is vastly overqualified for, but at least in the U.K. nobody knows her shame.
It’s been two years since “the incident” but Amy has landed in a great place to work, where everyone loves to talk about and wager on, a popular reality show called “Fantasy Island”, where influencers and other wannabes compete for a big prize. But, then her life is shattered again when a merger is announced and her ex Chris is introduced as the new interim boss.
She flees for her flat and discovers that she is getting a new neighbor in the flat next door-none other than Jake Jones, the hot writer who was a contestant from “Fantasy Island”, and her draw in the Office pool sweepstakes. Just eliminated in spectacular fashion, he was looking for a place to live where he could be anonymous after that embarrassing moment of his own.
Deliveries for him keep ending up at her door instead, but they don’t actually have their first real conversation until she embarrasses herself again on their shared terrace, when she overindulges in booze once more.
Not quite a “meet cute”.
Yet, it’s just what Jake needs to feel more comfortable after his very public humiliation and a friendship ensues-one that just might help each move forward together, which is always the sweetest revenge!
I loved Lizzy Dent’s debut, “The Summer Job” and although her sophomore effort, “The Setup” took a step back for me, she returns to form with this charming rom-com which just might be her BEST yet!
The only small negative-Amy’s FAVORITE word when she is upset rhymes with bunt, and I find the term f***ing (as a verb) to be UNSEXY as well, but I appreciated the “closed door” so I was able to look past the author’s word choices and enjoy this otherwise delightful story which I finished in a single afternoon!

Amy Duffy has gone viral for the most embarrassing incident ever. So bad, she hightails it from NYC to London, and refuses to face her family. It's been two years now and she misses them terribly but shame continues to haunt her. How can she face them after what she did?
She has a job she enjoys working with her best friend Maggie but it isn't her dream job. It's not the job she left behind in New York. Maggie tries to convince her to put herself back out there but if there is one thing she's lacking it's courage.
Then she meets her new neighbor, Jake, who is also hiding from his own moment of embarrassment. One even larger than Amy's as he was on a reality dating show so millions were able to witness his crash and burn. He's not only incredibly handsome but kind too and the pair become fast friends. When she discovers he's a writer that has all but given up on his dream they begin a project together that will hopefully fast track both of them into their true destinies.
There's only one hitch. Amy's ex, Chris, the jerk that caused her so much shame, has signed on as her new boss. She thought she escaped, that she ran far enough away, but trouble has come to town and he's still as handsome as ever. He's the one that will decide whether her and Jake's detective series will come to fruition. Will he do the right thing this time around or will he sell his soul to the devil like the last time she trusted him? You'll have to read this to find out!
The Sweetest Revenge was a super sweet rom-com! Oh how I loved Amy and Jake. Swoony banter for days!!! 😍 I loved Amy's boisterous family and Jake's wisecracking mom. Chris, that prickly prick, was perfectly despicable. There is a fair bit of f-bombs and even a few c*nts for those that take offense but other than that this stays fairly wholesome. There are no open door sexy scenes for which I was personally grateful. I really enjoyed my time with this one. My last book was a real heartbreaker so this was such a nice, smile inducing treat. 4 sweet and shiny stars!
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group - Putnam for my complimentary copy.
Amy Duffy had it all. A promising career, a relationship and was on her way to her cousin's wedding when her boyfriend/boss (Chris), at work decided that this is the time to talk about her project at work and their relationship. It does not go over well, and Amy does something that she will never live down or forget as her actions have been captured and put on social media.
She moves to a new job and is doing well, until the day her ex-boyfriend, Chris, is her new boss! She just can't shake this man. There is a good part of her life - her neighbor Jake (no stranger to public humiliation himself) who is helping her with a competition at work.
This was a cute rom com with some not so cute language thrown in. I don't mind an F bomb but there was another word that Amy loved to throw around that was a tad annoying.
I did enjoy the characters of both Amy and Jake. Both were likeable and fun to read about. This was an engaging tale about starting over, moving on, owning your mistakes, some sweet revenge and standing up for yourself. This was a nice fast read that had me cheering for some characters and booing for another.
I enjoyed that this wasn’t an insta love or insta lust type of book. Things progressed nicely and relationships were formed. Plus, Amy is a fun character to read about.
Well written, engaging, fun and sweet!
Thank you to PENGUIN GROUP Putnam, G.P. Putnam's Sons and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
A tv producer on a comeback falls for her co-writing neighbor in this latest from one of my go-to summer romance authors. I loved all the Emily in Paris (but make it London) vibes, the swoony love interest, the revenge on your ex, women taking down the man vibes.
This was AMAZING on audio read by my very favorite narrator, Brittany Pressley (seriously any book she reads is almost guaranteed to be a new fav for me). Highly recommended, especially for fans of books like The roughest draft or Would like to meet by Rachel Winters.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and @prhaudio for early digital and audio copies in exchange for my honest review!!
This was not what I was expecting, but still a good read. Although I really liked the writing, I felt myself struggling a little to connect with the characters and feel the chemistry between the MCs. Which was a bit disappointing, but not enough to make me stop reading.
Overall, I still enjoyed this book and the premise and plot were fun and engaging enough to keep pulling me in.
Thank you to the publisher for kindly providing me with an ARC via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
This started off super strong! I was immediately intrigued by the first few chapters - learning about Amy's job and the betrayal of her ex-boyfriend, Chris. After the humiliating incident, Amy moves to London to lick her wounds and settle into her low-level job making TV trailers. Just as she meets her new hot neighbor and is feeling confident about a potential promotion, her ex makes an appearance at her job, resurfacing a lot of unresolved feelings and emotions.
While I enjoyed reading about Amy and Jake (neighbor/love interest), their relationship wasn't fully developed. Their attraction to each other was evident, but I needed a bit more aside from the fun flirting/banter. They are very similar characters - writers in the film/TV industry, have family troubles, are haunted by humiliating incidents they both regret - which is why they're great together, but I still found myself wondering if that's all that really connected them. Amy, at some points, just wasn't my favorite character and I had a hard time rooting for her and the decisions she made in the third act conflict.
Oh Lizzy Dent, I just knew I was giving you another chance for a reason and damn if you didn't nail it. I'm glad I stuck around, but, more importantly, I'm glad I got to meet these characters and spend a little time with them - it was an absolute pleasure.
Getting drunk and taking revenge on her ex-boyfriend/boss sounded good at the time but only led to more heartbreak for Amy. Her career is toast and her love life is obliterated. Looking for a fresh start, Amy finds herself in London. Two years later things are finally starting to look up.
The Sweetest Revenge was such a cute read. I absolutely adored Amy. Not only does she have the same name as I do, but how could you not relate to a woman who has been scorned and humiliated by someone she loved? I loved her meet-cute with Jake. Jake had his own fair share of baggage and humiliation. He was also looking for a fresh start and ended up with an unexpected friendship with Amy.
Together, Jake and Amy made quite the pair. Their banter was entertaining and I enjoyed the ease of their relationship. No good love story would be without its fair share of ups and downs and I thoroughly enjoyed watching these two characters navigate their way to happily ever after.
If you enjoy romances about a woman scorned getting her revenge and a second chance at love, you won’t want to miss The Sweetest Revenge by Lizzy Dent.
*I was provided an ARC copy of this book via the publisher & NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review*
i loved this book!! the banter was everything! it was a funny, lighthearted, as well as a romantic read that was quite enjoyable.
the FMC, amy, is a force. she is a breath of air to this genre. it is hard to find books that have a FMC in her 30s that can’t figure out how to pull her life together. it’s refreshing to see from a younger view! it shows that it’s ok to not know what you are doing and everything takes time.
jake is the divine. he is the hottest! his personality is one of the best i’ve seen from a MMC. i love the introverted aspect of him. his flaws? none.
i just HAVE to add the revenge amy got on chris is empowering! i loved that she took her power back!
but with all of that i feel like amy is missing something and maybe that’s the point; her being 30 and lost. i also felt like it needed more umph. i LIVE for drama and tears and i felt like it fell short in that area.
all in all i loved the book and it definitely will be a rec!
Cute story about bouncing back after a terrible breakup. I found the story to be entertaining but would have liked it more if Amy was more likeable; she was extremely selfish and self-centered. While what happened to her was appalling, it was hard to root for her when her actions didn’t warrant it. I did like Jake and enjoyed their banter and following their relationship but as a whole, I would have hoped for a little more growth on her end.
I received a copy from #NetGalley for an honest review.
What a delight! I’ve been eyeing Dent for a while and was pleasantly surprised when this one showed up!
I love a good revenge plot but I’m used to them more in my thriller reads but this was just so fun! I relished in Jake and Amy’s witty banter and especially their swoon worthy chemistry!
As a huge Fan of TV, I loved the behind the curtains details of the inception behind shows and ultimately adored how vibrant and super sweet this one was! Such a perfect and heartwarming summer read! It felt realistic and relatable and I was easily engaged from start to finish!
Oh I adored this one from the first page. I felt SO angry for Amy with the whole situation with Chris at the start- how DARE he?! I then was mortified for her through the aftermath, Lizzy captured so perfectly how drink and emotions can quickly spiral out of control, to the extreme in this case... Then, following that, how the longer you leave something, the harder it can be to face up to it. I loved Amy and her friends, they were generally hilarious and I found myself wishing I could join Amy, Maggie and Jake on the terrace for a drink and a laugh. Washing Amy and Jake's interactions and their relationship develop felt so authentic. Towards the end I felt genuinely anxious thinking everything might go wrong, but I had to keep reading.
Overall a hilarious and heartwarming read about the power of owning your mistakes- get this on your TBR for summer!
With MASSIVE thank you to Lizzy for sending me an early galley of this one!
A woman scorned getting her groove back with a hot new guy? Count me in!
Amy was such a relatable character. We've all been there (although I hope we haven't all peed on a car😂). Jake! What a total dreamboat! He is perfection!
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this arc in exchange for an honest review!
After a drunken day of taking revenge on her ex, that quickly goes viral, Amy Duffy uproots her life and moves to London to get a fresh start. But along the way, she lost the person she once was. The new Amy Duffy is still Amy, but nothing like the person that she was before the incident. But now, after hearing that there is a new position available as a writer, and Amy is determined to make it hers. The only person in her way? The ex that she got revenge on two years before...that's now her boss. But Amy has met a new guy and sparks are flying, but she'll have to figure out how she can truly get revenge on her ex without losing the new guy.
Thank you Putnam Books for an advanced copy in exchange for a review!
From the moment I read the blurb, I knew this one was going to be an adventure, and I ended up liking it much more than I originally thought I would. Amy is a complex character that I both liked and didn't at various points throughout the book. By the end, I found myself rooting for her to find her happily ever after. My only complaint was that I wish the big twist of would have come a bit later in the book and not been mentioned on the back cover. This took some of the suspense out of it, but it was still enjoyable.
4.5 Stars Bust Your Windows and Before He Cheats - chorus only - equally work fit the intro to this book. The revenge scheme is a bit of a bang (and not the spicy kind) at the beginning with potential for consequences throughout, but did I quite enjoy the fallout and the immediate listen of both songs. Amy is good at her job, brilliant with ideas and looking for a diamond in the rough. She is not, however, brilliant at navigating relationships with work and it gets cloudy. Dating her boss in secret in hindsight was a recipe for disaster. Fleeing across the pond to England gives Amy the second chance she needs and the time to lick her wounds privately. But things have a way of coming back and her boss in the interim is none other than that slick ex she has been avoiding. Teaming up with her neighbor, Jake, might be the best way to keep her job and her sanity in tact. Lizzy is one of my first author interactions on Instagram. She's a delightful human and that personality shines through in her books. I will always want to pick up her books and this one is the most romance centric of them to date, which I naturally loved. Brittany Pressley delivers in this narration. I love her voice for this type of book, featuring a sassy down-on-her-luck heroine with the world to conquer. Thank you to @prhaudio for the complimentary audiobook. All thoughts are my own.
This is my second Lizzy Dent book and what a delight! This is definitely the perfect beach read! I loved the beginning of this book and was completely hooked when Amy has her “humiliating incident”. To be honest, I think many of us can relate to what she does after being scorned by an ex! The Sweetest Revenge follows along on Amy’s journey as she runs away from New York to London for a fresh start. There she meets Jake, who is also trying to start fresh, and together they take on the production world. I found their chemistry and their banter so endearing! I also really loved Amy's character development and found her very relatable. I zipped through this one and is the perfect summer read!
Thank you netgalley and Putnam for the early copy!
I’d like to thank Insta Book Tours for having me on the tour. I have loved Lizzy’s previous books and couldn’t wait to read this one.
😂Our story starts with Amy and an unfortunate drunken incident, that had me laughing out loud. From here the entertainment just keeps coming. Lizzy Dent’s humour is on point in this story and I found it impossible not to giggle away.
💖The sexual tension between Jake and Amy is through the roof! I loved watching the sparks fly, whilst desperately hoping they finally admit their true feelings.
🧑🏻❤️💋👩🏻As our leading characters, I not only loved the potential of Amy and Jake as a couple, but also as individuals. They were imperfectly perfect with their own struggles but completely relatable. I felt that I really got to know both of them and their families through the story, I was sad to leave them all behind,.
⭐Once again Lizzy Dent does not disappoint. This rom-com is packed with fun, loving characters, hilarity and so much sex appeal, you’ll need to cool down after!
I need to start off that I am stingy to give rom coms a 5 star and after I finished this in one day it was no doubt gonna be a 5. Lizzy Dent sucked me in right away with “The Incident” at the beginning. I really loved the characters and could see myself in Amy and oh man Jake is just so sweet, thoughtful and loved how he and Amy supported each other and saw each others talents. Best friend Maggie is great and want her to be my bestie. Chris is a fun character to dislike for sure. A cherry on top is the setting in London.
I am so thankful to NetGalley, Lizzy Dent and Penguin Group Putnam for this eARC since I now need to go off and read Her other books!
Thank you NetGalley for an early e-copy of The Sweetest Revenge by Lizzy Dent in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed The Summer Job and I was so excited to see that Lizzy Dent had a new book coming out. I was even more excited when I got approved for a NetGalley ARC of it. Unfortunately, The Sweetest Revenge seemed like it was written by a different author. I struggled to get through it. Normally, I can read a book in a couple of days, but I never wanted to pick this up and ended up taking a couple of months to finish it.
Maybe I would have enjoyed the story more if the main character, Amy, had chosen some other form of revenge? But what she did was gross and beyond destructive. It made me super uncomfortable and I had a hard time liking her because of it.
It also didn’t help that there was zero chemistry between her and Jake. The romance was such a slow burn that I’m not even sure the match was ever lit. In fact, the romance could have been removed from the story entirely and not much would have changed.
If you do read this, make sure to set your expectations. Even though this is marketed as a romance, it’s more fiction. There’s very little romance and the little romance there is isn’t very fulfilling.
Thank you to NetGalley, PENGUIN GROUP Putnam, and G.P. Putnam's Sons for this ARC to review . The cover is what initially drew me in - it's bright, it looked fun! Unfortunately, the story fell really flat for me. To me, the FMC wasn't likeable and there wasn't enough relationship building between her and the other characters. There just wasn't enough substance.
I requested a digital advanced readers copy from NetGalley and Penguin Group and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.
Synopsis: Her past is a mess.
But then, in a twisted turn of fate, her past and present are about to epically, hilariously collide.
My Thoughts: A am little behind on reviews due to have surgery in May and finishing my Master’s Degree in June, so I did the audiobook on this one. Brittany Pressley is the narrator for the audiobook and she is one of the best and I just LOVE listening to her voice. Amy Duffy, a developmental executive for TV is supposed to he on the way to her cousin’s wedding when her then boyfriend drops a bombshell, many shots later, a missed wedding, Amy does the most embarrassing thing, which is captured on video that goes viral. She escapes to London to reinvent herself working for a small time studio. After a merger is announced, her boyfriend that she fled from is now a ‘consultant.’ Her neighbor is also fleeing from his life. A meet cute brings these together in unspectacular fashion as she works hard to regain her composure. This follows a friends to lovers and next door neighbor trope.
The story is narrated by both Amy and Jake, it their perspectives. Amy has been in London for two years and now has the opportunity for promotion into a role similar to the one in NY before her life exploded. Her neighbor, Jake, also running from an embarrassing event, is a writer that has given up. This new project involves a writing project, so the two (Amy & Jake) team up together, spend an absorbent amount of time together… When Amy’s former boyfriend, Chris, is the one that decides her fate on the promotion, will that explode? Or end blissfully? The characters were developed well with depth, witty banter, chemistry, and intriguing. The characters were likable and relatable. The author’s writing style was complex, humorous, swoony, and kept me engaged. The flow worked well and the pace was a little slow in the beginning and the ending felt a bit rushed.
Content warning of f-bombs and the c** word for those that would take offense. This is a closed door romance, otherwise. The synopsis gives a little too much away, so I took out one part of it. If you can go in blindly, it really is the way for this book. Overall, I enjoyed reading this and I have loved other works by Dent. I would recommend this quick read/listen to other readers.
"The Sweetest Revenge" is the first book by Lizzy Dent that I have read. I cannot wait to read her back catalog because I enjoyed the hell out of this book! This story is the perfect summer read! It is laugh-out-loud hilarious, light and fun, messy and drama-filled, and even surprisingly sweet at times. I loved all of the characters, but I particularly liked the main character Amy. She is strong, ambitious, and determined, but has also been wounded by life and love. After an unfortunate series of incidents involving her boss/ex-boyfriend Chris, his car, and a video of her that went viral, Amy fled New York for London and now works at a new company cutting up footage to make TV trailers. Her new neighbor, Jack, was just kicked off one of the hottest reality shows on television. As their relationship slowly develops, they begin working together to co-create a script so he can get his foot in the door of the industry and so she can get a new position at work. Unfortunately, Chris shows up out of nowhere and is now working for Amy's company. The best aspects and moments of this story involve Amy, Jake, and their ever-evolving friendship. As they slowly get to know one another, they uncover things about each other, and themselves, that they didn't know. Amy and Jake both have their flaws and make mistakes (to varying degrees). They always take accountability and grow from their transgressions. I thought they had incredible chemistry as characters! I found Jake to be absolutely swoon-worthy as an MMC. I absolutely loathed Chris so, so much. That's just how well-written he is! I certainly wanted to slap Amy a couple of times during the book because she should have had so many more red flags about him having dated him!! I also enjoyed the TV show/network setting, as well as all of the television quotes and references to all things TV. It felt very relevant and seamlessly integrated into the story.
Trust me, you're going to want to read "The Sweetest Revenge." It is a breeze to read, and it will keep you invested from start to finish! I certainly couldn't put it down. Way to go, Lizzy Dent!
Thank you to NetGalley, Lizzy Dent, and PENGUIN GROUP Putnam, G.P. Putnam's Sons for the complimentary ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this review.
Lizzie Dent, I knew as soon as I read your latest release, I would be counting down for your next!!!
The Sweetest Revenge will make you laugh out loud as Amy (who reminds me a bit of Amelia Bedelia, a bit) muddles through her life after a disastrous revenge act she enacted on her ex-boyfriend. I feel like she needed to listen to Carrie Underwood's song "Before He Cheats". Instead, Amy climbs onto her ex-boyfriend's car and takes a sweet relieving wiz on his car. Unfortunately for Amy, her act is caught on video and goes viral.
Two years later, Amy has moved on, or so she thinks. When an opportunity at her current job arises and Amy is presented with a chance to pitch her own show again, she's determined to make it happen. However, when her ex appears at the office, Amy is forced to confront her past, while crafting a new show pitch with her very delicious neighbor, Jake.
The chemistry in this book was fun. Amy is a mess and Jake is a sturdy rock. I loved the development of their friendship and seeing them work through their miscommunications, hopes, and fears.
The cover of this photo is so appropriate for sweet, quirky, and vengeful Amy. She's going succeed and stick it to The Man.
I now need my next Lizzie Dent book, k Lizzie?
A huge thank you to PRH Audio and Putnam for granting me access to this title via NetGalley!
4 stars | Thank you to the publisher for gifting me a free copy of this book! All opinions are my own.
Well, this was an absolute delight! I loved Lizzy Dent's previous books, but this is now my favorite and secured her on my list of auto-buy rom-com authors.
This book checks all the boxes of things I love in a rom-com: set in London, a main character with an interesting job (I loved all the bits about behind-the-scenes television development), friends-to-lovers trope, mostly closed door, and a cast of great characters. This felt like a fresh take on the 'set in Hollywood' rom-com trend we've seen these last few years.
Dent's writing is lovely; it's intelligent, funny, and witty. I could easily picture this as a classic early 2000s rom-com movie while reading. I'll be recommending this to everyone!
After a humiliating breakup and a devastating blow to her professional career, Amy flees to London and finds herself with humbler ambitions fueled by an endless menu of ready-meals for one, But once her ex shows up, she decides she’s ready for big career moves and convinces her new neighbor, Jake, to recommit to writing and help her submit a killer TV show proposal. Will Amy be able to separate her personal and professional life or will her desire for revenge distract her from what’s most important?
