One Liner: got potential

Ankita, a BPO employee in Bangalore, is found murdered in her flat a day before her engagement. Her brother Aniket is out of the city and is not traceable. Aniket’s lover, Suganya, and Ankita’s fiancé, Jayesh, are distraught and heartbroken.

With the media and police spinning stories instead of solving the crime, it’s up to Suganya and Jayesh to get to bottom of the truth. Can they get justice for Ankita? What happened to Aniket?

The story comes in the first-person POV of Suganya and Jayesh.

What I Like:

• The book presents several themes and blends them together rather well. It shows the corruption and lackadaisical attitude of some cops, their reach and connection with the politicians, the role of media in sensitive cases (and how they put the victims’ families at risk for TRPs), the life of BPO employees, the difference in city and village lifestyle, etc.

• The story goes back and forth, sharing information in bits and pieces while keeping the plot moving. The pacing dips in the middle but picks up in the final part.

• The inclusion of the author’s love of our beloved singer SP Balasubramanium made me smile. Though it doesn’t add to the story, it feels like a nice touch for character development.

What Didn’t Work for Me:

• The POV switch wasn’t always seamless. The narrators sometimes sound the same, despite having different personalities.

• The narration feels jerky in places and overly dramatic in others. Some dialogues are a little too long and clunky.

• The pacing is a little uneven as the story focuses more on the past than the present. This isn’t exactly a thriller but a drama with a crime.

To summarize, The Half Death is a decent attempt and would be a much better read after a good round of editing. The title makes sense when important information is revealed at the end.

My thanks to the author for sending me a copy of the book. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book. Detailed feedback has been sent to the author.

The A siblings seem to be quite close. Suganya and Jayesh, the fiancees of the siblings, Aniket and Ankita, are in for a shock when Ankita is found murdered and Aniket is missing. The author deftly takes you through a swift ride. Well plotted and nicely written, the book is engaging. You have to pay attention and keep track of the bends and curves. A fun ride!

From the author of Prema Naada Pandita comes this double murder mystery novel, which is the first part in the Dark Death Nirvana series by SB Akshobhya. This tantalizing thriller is bound to send chills down the spine of even the most avid readers and thus can be called a truly engrossing, eye-popping, and jaw-dropping crime thriller.

At 210 pages, the novel is moderately lengthy though fast-paced, but not jumpy in the action and the thrill that the action imbibes. The book cover exudes the darkness that the plot is filled with and shows a mysterious figure who seems to be carrying a knife in one hand and a trash bag in another. The effect of a broken glass pane through which the reader can see this mysterious person adds to the thrill and terror in the mind of the reader who is beyond perplexed at the title of the book.

Despite featuring a double murder mystery, the book is called half death and that raises a lot of questions in the mind of the reader and also serves as yet another reason to pick this book.

The plot revolves around the sudden discovery of the murder of BPO employee Ankita whose deeply bruised dead body is found in the flat that comprises the base for four friends Ankita, Aniket, Suganya, and Jayesh. Ankita and Aniket are siblings from a humble background who have moved to a big city in hopes of making a better living. Aniket is 6 years older than Ankita and Suganya is his girlfriend. Jayesh is Ankita’s fiancé and her murder takes place a day before their engagement.

The Half Detah by SB Akshobhya Book Review
Aniket was away for an interview in Gurugram when Ankita is found dead. However, the twist in the plot arises when Aniket never returns back and goes missing. Not just that, but Aniket remains untraceable and unreachable which adds to the mystery element of the plot.

The multiple climaxes deliver a blow upon blow to the characters Jayesh and Suganya as well as to the readers. It is hard to accept and believe the extent of harshness and inhumane behaviour that is showcased by the murderer. These act as twists in the plot. They flip the ideas of the reader about murder mystery novels as there is ample element of shock in this novel but it helps to sustain the unpredictability of the plot.

Meanwhile, investigations and post-mortem of Ankita’s case point towards a planned murder using acid and other sharp instruments. It is clear that the murderer had the intention to cause harm. Yet, what remains difficult to digest is the unfathomable pieces of evidence that put Aniket as a suspect in his sister’s murder as several accusations get levied upon him. While it remains hard to determine where exactly Aniket is located, investigations determine more secrets, particularly rising from the closet in the flat at Stuti Sai Apartments.

The loose ends eventually get tied up and there is a seamless flow in events of the plot that keeps up the attention of the reader.

In The Half Death, the writing style is easy to follow, error-free, and free-flowing with moderately difficult vocabulary to bring out the nuances of the plot. The story is told from the first-person narrator’s perspective. Suganya is the one who narrates the entire plot. There is constant shifting between the present and the past as Suganya notes the manner in which Ankita was interviewed for the BPO and landed the job as opposed to her present state of being gruesomely killed.

The Half Detah by SB Akshobhya Review
The narrative keeps up the pace of the thriller and does not go in any roundabout manner or beat around the bush to establish the incidents. It is through the dialogue exchanges that the plot progresses and gives readers an idea about what may come next.

Yet, the writing style does not in any way act revelatory. It lets out facts but does not disclose the direction in which the plot is about to progress which maintains the suspense of the plot.

Another interesting aspect of the writing style remains the few lines of poetry attempted by the author at the end of every other chapter that sums up the situation at hand and adds to the emotional aspect of an otherwise sorrowful and heart-wrenching story.

On the whole, the book is an entertaining though scary read and one that is going to raise a lot of questions in the mind of the reader regarding the truth of human relations and the unpredictability of life. Highly recommended to lovers of mystery, crime, and thrillers.

After reading quite a few books by the author, I can safely say that he is one of the most versatile writers I have ever come across. There is not a single genre that he hasn't explored and has done almost full justice to every sort of work.

"The Half Death" from its blurb seemed to me a quintessential murder mystery and I wanted to pick the work readily not only because I am quite fond of this genre but also to see the author's treatment and take on events and I must confess I am not disappointed a bit and spellbound to the core .

The story revolves majorly around four characters : Ankita , Aniket , Jayesh and Suganya who all shares a flat. Ankita is a BPO employee and is found murdered in quite bizarre circumstances. And adding to the air of mystery is the sudden disappearance of her brother Aniket which makes it quite obvious that he must be the culprit but is he? Grab the book to find out.

The story at 210 pages is moderately paced. There are not many jump scares or thrilling action sequences but the way author takes the readers on a mind boggling spree is certainly appreciable. Bit by bit ,events start unfolding and readers have to pay a close attention in the detailing part so as not to miss out on the fun (pun intended). Author has certainly maintained a pedantic eye throughout the tale which was expected from him. The cover is also quite thoughtful and so is the title. The characterisation is extremely professional and the moment you realize you have got hold of things and figured out the mystery it gently takes a turn. The way the climax is planned stuns you to the core and it will be difficult to let go of the hangover that will sustain atleast for a few days after you finish reading the exceptional piece.

All in all a masterclass in the way it delivers the societal message of being a little less judgmental and to showcase the unconventional fabric of the society especially in the present times

You know the feeling: the delicious thrill of not being able to put a book down, of not having a clue where the plot is heading and loving every flip of the page as you race toward the shocking finale. Add a dash of whodunit, a sprinkle of suspense, and some really great writing and you have the makings of a murder mystery book that's worth staying up late for. While Agatha Christie remains the "Queen of the Murder Mystery" with 66 detective novels and 14 short stories, there are a lot of new Indian authors who are worth getting to know and love in the heart-pounding genre.

The Half Death by S B Akshobhya begins with Ankita being found dead just a day before her wedding. Aniket, her brother who had gone for an interview in Gurgaon vanishes in thin air. Both siblings share a bond with each other. The case takes a completely unexpected turn while Ankita's fiancé Jayesh and Aniket's fiancé Suganya are dealing with bereavement. The police when start investigating the matter many things surface about Aniket. They also initially doubt Suganya and Ankita’s fiance Jayesh also is investigated. The book has to be read first-hand to know What is Aniket’s truth? Who killed Ankita? Is there something that is hidden in try plain sight?

The narration actually makes the reader feel every aspect of the story which is written with intricate details. The author has to be congratulated for this. When the reader reads the book, it seems like events are being unfolded in front of their eyes. The author keeps the readers hooked till the last word. The plot is entangled with multiple layers of twists and certainties. The poem on the last page is an emotional one.

The book is really a page-turner and makes the readers binge the book until the climax which keeps the readers at the edge of their seats.

Ankita is murdered in her flat just a day before her engagement to Jayesh. In addition, her elder brother Aniket cannot be contacted over the mobile phone as it stays switched off. Suganya rushes to their apartment amidst the massive rage of crime. Jayesh and his father join her at the murder scene.

The bright day turns grey, and the roller coaster ride of investigation rolls from there. First, there are multiple assumptions about the murder and the missing brother. Ankita's parents are brought from their village and deny her existence, which fuels the already outraged fire. However, the big question remains why was Aniket not traced by the police? Who is telling the truth, and who is concealing facts?

The book cover is intriguing, and the book title is impressive. The brilliant narration by the author keeps the readers hooked till the last word. The plot is entangled with multiple layers of twists and realities. So read the book till the end to discover the identity of the murderer.

S. B. Akshobhya's, "The Half Death" is a suspenseful murder mystery, which keeps readers hooked with its story till the end. This is a Dark Death Nirvana where the stakes are high and suspenseful plot-driven story. Thriller genre always excites me as it includes unexpected plot twists and a page-turning tension.

The story starts, where we find Ankita, a BPO employee, murdered in her flat a day before her engagement. Aniket, her brother, who was supposed to return to the city but went missing without any trace. While Ankita's fiance, Jayesh and Aniket's lover, Suganya are recouping from the grief, the case takes a completely drastic turn. What happens next? Why was Ankita murdered? The story begins intriguingly, centred around Ankita, a BPO employee mysteriously found dead just a day before her engagement, and her brother, Aniket, who goes missing after heading to Gurugram for a job interview. While the police investigation appears lacklustre, the plot takes readers through many unexpected twists and turns.

Since it’s a thriller, I’ll keep the storyline details to a minimum to avoid spoilers, but I will say the book is engaging and well-paced. The language is accessible, making it a good choice for readers of all levels, especially beginners. The narration is notably strong—this being my third book by the author, I find this one has a noticeable improvement in storytelling flow. The pacing varies, with some sections moving fast while others slow slightly due to some long dialogues, but overall, it keeps the reader hooked.

While not particularly deep, the characters play their roles well and contribute to a cohesive storyline. Now, you may be wondering why, with a solid plot, intriguing twists, accessible language, and improved narration, I rated it 3.5 stars. As an avid thriller fan, I found myself guessing the main twist around the 75th page, which took away some of the suspense. Despite this, I continued reading to see how the story unfolded and noticed minor plot inconsistencies.

Nevertheless, the book has plenty of twists that many readers will enjoy, and it’s an excellent recommendation for new readers who appreciate thrillers. The plot takes a different direction from the typical thriller, and the unique climax is a testament to this—one that, for me, was just a bit too easy to spot.

This book, The Half Death - Dark Death Nirvana Series written by S B Akshobhya is a murder mystery which keeps the readers at the edge of their seats until the end. We might have multiple assumptions about the murderer inside our head and could not narrow down to a single person.

Ankita is found murdered in her apartment just a day before her engagement. Her brother Aniket goes missing. While Ankita's fiance Jayesh and Aniket's fiance Suganya are going through grief, the case takes a completely different path. Is Aniket involved in this murder mystery? The story starts with a BPO employee Ankita who was found dead in her flat just before the day of her engagement. And her brother Aniket was also missing. He was gone for a interview in Noida but then he just vanished. The police was not investigating the case seriously. They didn't show interest to find the murderer.

The story was simple with many twists and turns involved. The last scene of the book flipped the whole story. The ending was not good but not that bad as well. The characters were not that strong but still the book managed to hold my attention till the very end.

This was my second book of this author after 'The Panipuri Crimes'. For me, the first one was better than this one.

Some stories make you question the right and wrong of the story's protagonist. Sometimes you even think whether this person is protagonist or a wolf in sheep's clothes.
But then as truth unravels you will unknowingly empathize with them and understand the brutality of the society makes many people hide truth even when they have no malicious intent.
This book is one of its kind that explores a particular perception of society in thriller format. A perception that doesn't allow individuals to live peacefully or even die peacefully.
One thing you will feel after reading this book is that you need to be less judgemental. An interesting read

Murder mystery stories only intrigue it's reader when they introduce a new concept or a unpredictability in its narration.

The Half Death book by S B Akshobhya has the latter pat down well. The story revolves around a pair of siblings Ankita and Aniket and how one tragically loses her life and the other disappears suddenly.

The characterisation of akk the characters including the supporting characters is well written that as a reader I couldn't guess what they were upto and what they will do next and that kept me hooked till the very end.
