Flame of God: The Fire of the Holy Spirit in Spain

BE IGNITED!

Are you frustrated by your lack of power to live an authentic Christian life? Do you want more boldness to share the Good News of Christ? Do you desire the gifts of the Holy Spirit to be manifested in your life?

American missionary Daniel Del Vecchio moved in miracles, healings, and deliverance while ministering in Cuba, Mexico, and Spain. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, he reached out to backpacking youth traveling through Torremolinos in the 1970s and 80s, spearheading an international Christian community and evangelical churches in Spain. These communities opened drug rehabilitation centers and cared for the poor and marginalized and those suffering from trauma and abuse. Light always overcomes the darkness!

Flame of God reads like a modern-day book of Acts. It will encourage you to obey the Word of God, to step out boldly as Christ’s ambassador, and to persevere through trials, sacrifice, and opposition. Your faith will be ignited! “The fire of the Holy Spirit can burn in millions of hearts, if we don’t allow the love of the world to extinguish it” (Dan Del Vecchio).

The joy of the Lord is contagious! We aren’t all called to be pioneering missionaries, but we all have a part to play in God's strategy to reach our neighbors and the nations!

This is a non-fiction book that chronicles the life and ministry of an Italian-American named Dan Del Vecchio, who at the time of this writing is almost 91 years old and has served the Lord almost his entire life. He and his family lived and ministered in Cuba, Mexico, and Spain. He established churches, housed the homeless, set up drug rehabilitation centers, and rescued street orphans. Thousands have been helped and transformed to productive lives as a result of his ministry.

The author has done a nice job of pulling together a lot of stories over a long time horizon. It stayed interesting. It could have been a little more engaging if there had been more character development but that wasn’t the focus of the chronicle.

I found Pastor Del Vecchio’s teaching on “The Four Seasons of the Church” interesting. It describes faith in action.

The first season is spring, evangelism; the second is summer, discipleship; and the third is fall, social work. After believers are discipled, they can go into every kind of social work imaginable, serving at hospitals, schools, prisons, feeding programs, and drug rehabilitation programs. The fourth season is winter: becoming self supporting. Trained and committed Christians form a tremendous labor force, equipped with all kinds of talent and vocational skills. By opening community businesses, a church body can become self supporting.

Although the book shares a lot of successes, it also shares troubles and defeat. I believe that it provided a balanced view of the struggles and trials and hardships of a life fully dedicated to serving God by helping others.

Is this a suitable book for my teenager? Yes.

What an inspiration! The DelVecchio family has faithfully given their lives to Christ. May we all strive to be “the only Jesus people see” up to the standard they have set. I recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn of a modern day apostle and how the Lord has worked through his life and the lives of those involved in his ministry.
