Where the Flowers Bloom

Rate this book
Newly divorced and still coping with the loss of her mother to cancer, Daphne knows it’s time for her to move on with her life and try to meet someone. Or at least find herself a one-night stand since her friends think she needs to get laid.

Enter Henry.

New to their friend group. Insanely hot. And they have great chemistry. After a steamy night in the pool on her rooftop, they find themselves falling quickly, even though neither of them were looking for a relationship.

But Daphne soon finds out that Henry has a secret, and the bubble they created around them bursts, filling Daphne’s world with pain once more.

When her mother was on her deathbed, she told Daphne that she would use her experience to help someone else with their grief one day. But how do you help someone else when you’re not truly over your own?

This book deals with themes of grief and loss. Death from cancer is a heavy topic in this book in both adults and children. Explicit sexual scenes, character death, slight violence and talk of suicide is also present. Please read responsibly.

Can you please have a look at the cover?
Isn’t it outstanding? 🤩

Where the Flowers Bloom was a fabulous journey which gave me all the feels!!
An immensely written debut, without fanfare and theatrics, pulled me in and touched my heart deeply.

I am sorry to say that this read is not for all readers since grief and loss are featured.

I felt so close to Daphne and Henry, as if they were my friends, and I was glad that I didn’t have to advise them or tell them my thoughts because both of them were vulnerable and had their own burden.
I judged none of their decisions and actions.

It was mostly told from Daphne’s pov, Henry’s was in two chapters.

However, Daphne was so lucky to be surrounded by a group of amazing friends!! They were always there for her, made me laugh and appreciate the value of true friendship.

There were moments where I might have stopped breathing for some seconds, others where I was falling apart, and others where I shed many more than a few tears.

It was a very emotional story, wonderfully developed, extremely relatable, dealt with serious and hard issues, had significance, depth, substance and above all LOVE!

Last but not least, it had a hea in the end.

Beautiful cover – a talented debuting author – and a powerful, heartfelt and deeply moving love story. Yes, it will shatter your heart while giving you hope at the same time.

Told mostly from Daphne’s point of view, Henry does slip in and voice his thoughts in a couple of chapters. I wish there had been a bit more from Henry’s side to add more depth to his character. Both Daphne and Henry were wonderful and lovable characters who I wanted to wrap up in hugs.

Out of the mouths of babes . . . it was Lily who shares an utterly sweet and inspirational message of healing and hope. An amazing child!

The author surprisingly leads readers astray by letting you think the story is going one way and then wham – she’s suddenly sending readers in a new direction. It works in keeping the intrigue at a high level.

An interesting and diverse array of family and friends join Daphne and Henry offering support in lightening their load -- along with just the right amount of camaraderie and laughter.

This is the kind of unforgettable story that sticks, never letting go. Overall, readers can expect a beautifully written bittersweet and poignant story that completely captures the heart through the empowerment of love -- its strength and resilience.

Where the Flowers Bloom was one of my most anticipated reads so I couldn't wait to start this audiobook. Unfortunately, I couldn't get into the narration. I typically prefer dual POV but this is written exclusively from the FMC's perspective and the narrative voice fell completely flat for me. It didn't hold my interest and I fell asleep repeatedly from the style of narration.

As for the book itself, my only issues were that Daphne seemed younger than her years and I didn't care for some of her interactions with her friend group. I think the book had a lot of potential though as a way to address the way we deal with grief and illness. However, the narration was simply too distracting from the plot, causing me to call it a DNF early. Perhaps I will try again at a later time with the ebook and I regret not reading it that way initially. Other reviews have been largely positive so I would recommend the ebook or print version.

** Special thanks to author D.L Darby for sending me this audiobook to listen to and review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. Available July 13, 2023. **

If you want an incredibly heartbreaking story, but that is still beautiful and has great spice, this is for you! I'm pretty positive that 99% of readers will have tears with this one. But don't worry because there is an HEA and this is a complete standalone!

Where The Flowers Bloom follows Daphne. She is freshly divorced and after grieving the loss of her mom for five years, is ready to find her happiness again. Although not looking for a serious relationship, she meets Henry at a party and there are instant sparks. But he's not into one night stands and they exchange numbers. Their relationship then moves rather quickly, despite him being mysterious and seemingly harboring secrets.

This is so much more than a romance. I can't give anymore about the plot because of spoilers. But up until the 50% mark I thought this book was going in a completely different direction. The moment I realized where it was actually going, I had to set it down for bed and process it. I immediately picked it back up to finish it when I woke. Otherwise I easily could have read it in one sitting.

Despite it not being a long book, it invokes all the emotions. This is the authors debut and it was wonderfully written. By the end I loved all the characters and thought everyone was fleshed out the perfect amount. Daphne also has a friend group and I adored them all and the relationship she had with them. They brought just the right amount of comedic relief throughout. I know I mentioned spice too, the scenes were perfect and never overtook the plot! I would probably give it 2 out of 5 on the spice scale.

Definitely recommend this book if you need something emotional. It's the perfect read to give you all the feels. BUT heavy on the triggers as it deals with 𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐟, 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞, 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫, 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡.

Thank you D.L Darby for sending me an ARC and giving me an opportunity to read this book early! I'm so grateful and happy to have gotten to be one of the first people to read it. Can we also talk about the cover?! STUNNING. I cannot wait to get a paperback. Where the Flowers Bloom releases on November 18th 2022!

This was a super depressing contemporary romance. Was the book super well written? Absolutely. Personally, I don’t want my book to make my cry after I finish it and this is what happened here. I loved the first half, but it got a bit too sad for me at the end.

I will be posting a more in depth review with quotes and all that shazam before release, but I needed to post this now… run, don’t walk! Go put WTFB on the top of your TBR. If you love spicy romance where your heart and mind are on the line then this book is for you. So many realistic emotions and real life events. I connected with these characters on so many different levels. Raw emotions are real in this one.

"I've been waiting my whole life for you, Daphne."

Daphne has been grieving the loss of her mother to cancer for the last five years. Now, freshly divorced, she's finally beginning to heal and seek out happiness again. When she meets Henry, that happiness seems to be within her grasp. But Henry has a secret that could be devastating.

This book was cute and sexy while simultaneously dealing with grief, pain, and the ability to trust another with the darkest parts of yourself.

D.L. Darby did such an amazing job navigating the emotions of this story while throwing in heart-warming friendships and toe-curling spice. I laughed, I cried, I pounded my fists in frustration.

Do yourself a favor and read this the moment it becomes available!

WTFB BROKE ME!!
This book is the definition of emotional roller coaster.

It’s sweet, it’s spicy, and it’s heartbreaking.

This book is so well written. The author does an amazing job at making you feel EVERY. SINGLE. EMOTION.

It’s hard for me to write a detailed review because this book left me SPEECHLESS.
It’s probably one of the best books I’ve read all year. It deserves more than 5 stars, if I could give it 10 I would!

This is one of those books that will stay with you long after you read it.

Please check your triggers, this book deals with heavy topics such as death and cancer.

Before you even start this book, go and grab a box of tissues. I usually do not cry when I read, it takes a lot for that to happen. But this book made me cry twice and not just a few tears. I am talking full-on boo-hoo tears!

This book is a rollercoaster of emotions. It will make you laugh, make you angry, make you swoon, make you hot and sweaty (if you know what I mean), and then it will destroy you. It will take a piece of your heart that you will never be able to get back.

D.L.'s writing is so damn good. I would have never thought this was her first book. She makes you feel EVERY. SINGLE. EMOTION. I also loved the details she used. Even when it came to what someone was wearing. That allowed me to visualize it so much better.

Also, can we talk about the cover?! It is absolutely gorgeous!

I cannot thank D.L. enough for allowing me to be an ARC reader. I will forever remember this book.

This was such a beautiful story, I couldn’t put it down! Both of these characters experience so much trauma, which makes their growth (both individually and together) something to be admired. The spice was *chef’s kiss*, and Henry has now been added to my list of fictional book boyfriends. I also giggled quite often at their banter, and Daphne’s group of friends are amazing. Every woman needs a group of supportive girlfriends like this group.

Okay, now for the heavy stuff. This story does deal with divorce, familial death, and cancer. It was downright heartbreaking in the end, and I sobbed for 45 minutes. Take this as your warning!

Overall, I throughly enjoyed this book. I want to thank the author for allowing me to read an ARC copy. This book will be available on 11/18/22! So looking forward to reading more by her!!

this was a fine romance. i just expected something more. heartbreaking. although it was in a way i just didn't feel the heartbreak.

i also didn't feel the romance unfortunately. the smut was great though. i think i was just annoyed at will.. he was just SO annoying and i get that he was going through so much but he was really a dick i'm sorry..

i think if the book was longer and the charade where more fleshed out i would have loved this book. it all just felt rushed.

An absolutely breathtaking love story with spice. A woman grieving her mother who just passed away from cancer, a man who comes out of no where, a love that should be unbreakable with a lot of heartache along the way. Such an amazing, beautiful story, that is bound to make you CRY.

I can honestly say this book was memorable to read. What started off as a met cute spicy store took so many twist and turns and left you in emotional turmoil in the best possible way. The only thing stopping me from giving it 5 stars is that I felt the ending was somewhat rushed. The way we got brief glimpses over several months with 2 page chapters was neat but after that it was a very sudden HEA. Absolutely beautiful story though.

5 Stars IS NOT ENOUGH. 👏🏻

PHEW. Be sure to check trigger warnings before diving into this work - familial death, cancer, and divorce are heavy and prevalent throughout.

This is a brilliant debut by D.L Darby. I was honestly hooked from the first page. I love a book where i connect to the characters and you immediately build that connection with Henry and Daphne.

The character development that our MCs go through is substantial and extremely well done. I felt like I was IN IT with them. Both, Henry and Daphne, go through more trauma than any one individual should have to go through.

THE SPICE. It was extremely well done, it wasn’t too much and it didn’t overpower the plot! CHEFS KISS. 🤌🏻

Our side characters were outstanding. Daphne’s group of girlfriends is just the best. Sunday brunch and the way they talk and banter had be giggling and again, so relatable. Eric and Sean also showed a lot of growth throughout the novel.

RUN, and preorder your copy of this masterpiece. I’m not one that physically sobs and cries when I’m reading but this one.. this one was extremely well done and will be one i go back and reread. I will continue to wish i could read this again for the first time!

Thank you so much D.L Darby for providing me an ARC for a review! I devoured it and will be IMMEDIATELY preordering a paper copy to add to my collection as well!

I really think the group of girls sucked me in. Reminds me so much of my friends.

But Daphne, Henry and little Lily keep me going. This story had me feeling all emotions! All the Happy, Love, Anger.... and even a ugly cry made this book one of my top reads of the yr!

This book… THIS BOOK!!! Is a total must read. I was going in thinking I was getting a smutty read and instead I got my heart torn up!

We have Henry and Daphne who are both dealing with their own personal traumas. They come together and try and figure out if they can help each other.

I was going through this book thinking it’s going to be a cut and dry love story. But Darby hits us with each side when you think the characters are comfortable. Then the last few chapters came and I cried. Yes ladies and gentlemen this book will make you cry.

I love the characters and their journey. I love how she ended the book. There is no marriage or proposal at the end. This is not a speeding fast love.

I am just speechless at the moment! I just finished this as an ARC from the author.
I just have to say, this is 100% without a doubt a 5 ⭐️ read! I can personally relate to the scenario and I definitely appreciate the author’s warning in the beginning because of that relation. This story line is incredible. I finished it so quickly & didn’t want to put it down! It had the spice, laughter, tears….I went through all of the emotions with this book! Consider me officially in love with the characters 🫶. What an amazing debut for D.L. Darby!

This book follows Daphne as she is working through her grief, a year after losing her mom. Recently divorced, Daphne is determined to start living her life. Including dating, moving into a new apartment, and getting back to doing things she enjoys.

Enter Henry. He is new to the area and their friend group.

This story follows the beginning of Daphne and Henry's relationship. The journey that you take as you read this story makes you feel like you are right there with Daphne and Henry as they explore their new relationship.

I read this with my sad girl book club after seeing sone sobbing reviewer videos… and TBH it didn’t shatter me as I expected/ hoped. There are definitely heavy/ sad elements (definitely check the TW)…

But I think I struggled to connect with the characters, so it didn’t affect as emotionally as I was anticipating. The story kept me reading, but I didn’t like the characters so I was a little detached.

The ending was a little too quick and easy... after all the build up, it just didn’t feel right to me.

Wow what an incredible debut novel. It’s the second book this year to make me cry. I love my emotional reads and this was fantastic.

I want to say thank you to D.L. Darby for sending me and ARC. If you read the authors note at the end she opens up and explains that this book touches close to home. You can feel it through the pages and even more when you hit the emotional parts. Incredible!

It opened with clear trigger warnings. Which then jumped into meeting Daphne who is recently divorced, 32 and in the past year lost her mother to cancer Since her loss Daphne has stayed inside and only really socialised with her close girlfriends but it’s time for her to get out there and meet people and be free again. This is where she stumbles into a man named Henry who is also a Henry Cavil look alike. As they spend more time together we learn Henry may be hiding something from Daphne but what could that secret be…

The spice is fantastic. Henry is commanding and can be a little jealous. Daphne finally started to let go and feel again when meeting Henry which I loved. Daphne’s close girlfriends were a great element to the plot I found myself laughing when they spent time together and really looking out for her. Side character Sean he was a train wreck hated him at the start but now I kinda respect him towards the end of the book.

Overall it was an incredible read and enjoyed the writing style of the author.

This story was written to break you down and then build you back up - D.L. Darby really said let’s see what my readers can handle!

The way Daphne and Henry’s relationship came to be made my heart so happy - they weren’t looking for anything but their chemistry was just undeniable.
Their first night together.. ohhh will be a scene I go back to again!

“I think we both know this isn’t going to last just one night, Daphne. I plan on taking my time with you.”

Besides my love for Henry(book boyfriend material) - Daphne’s group of friends were top notch and really added another layer to this story.

A gorgeous cover, for an even more gorgeous story, with details that popped off the page and a love created out of hardship. I could not put it down!

Read it & let me know what you think 🖤

This book blew me away. It was so sweet, emotional, steamy, broke my heart and all around powerful. By the end of the book, I had bawled my eyes several times. It captured me from page one.

It hits on several trigger warnings including: cancer, divorce, suicide, addiction/rehab and dealing with grief and death, in general.

Daphne and Henry warmed my heart and gave me ALLLLLLLL of the feels. (Including the spice. Holy crap! 🥵🔥) Henry is officially on my list of "favorite book boyfriends". 🤤 However, Daphne and Henry have so much trauma and grief, seperately and together. Their relationship goes through the ringer. By the end of the book tho, it is all worth it. 🌻

Plus, everyone should have a group of girlfriends like Daphne. I absolutely loved the sisterhood between them all and how they were always there for each other. No matter what. 💗

"Because when tragedy strikes and your whole world stops, theirs keeps going. It's not fair to assume people will drown in your grief with you." 🤍

D.L. Darby's way of writing on such powerful topics is literal perfection. I can't believe this was a debut novel. You will not be able to put this book down! I can't wait to read more by her.

Thank you for giving the opportunity to read this arc!

This was the pallet cleanser I needed. I don’t know what I was expecting when I started this book, but ending it in a puddle of tears wasn’t it. The way the author conveyed every raw emotion, had me turning the page faster and faster. I couldn’t get enough. Am I absolutely gutted? Yes. Do I forgive Henry? The jury is still out. But I absolutely loved this story.

I have to commend Daphne for the way she handled everything. To Sean, I found myself rooting for him and his recovery. I will need his story asap. To Eric, my golden retriever boy, I hope he gets the happiness you deserve. He is too good for this world.

To Lily. Her kind soul and sassy attitude made me love her.

It’s hard to come across a book that sticks with you long after you’ve finished it. This is one of them.

Excuse me while I go finish crying.

Can’t say I began. Just read one chapter. She’s a hairdresser. She’s divorcing her husband. There’s some talk about her awesome gang of girls. There will be drinking.

Not for me.

I found nothing to resonate with this girl at all. No sympathy awoke within me. I did not feel interested in reading what she does with her life.

Did not finish.
