I've discovered the Mountain Man books are very inconsistent. Some I could re-read many times while others, I can barely get through. Spirit was just okay. What I had the biggest problem with were the descriptions. Way too many adjectives were used to describe the bad guys; brigands, louts, oafs, hard cases, outlaws, thugs. It got comical after awhile. Ordeal could have been a good story if it hadn't turned into Smoke being like MacGyver. Some of the things he was able to do were outrageous and they took away from the story. I'm sorry I wasted time on this set.
Smoke Jensen’s spirit and ability prevail. Smoke faces plenty of saddle trash and takes them out with his weapons. He doesn’t hesitate to deal with those out to get him.
This book contains two adventures, double action and lots of it. First adventure involves Smoke's wife Sally is kidnapped to bait Smoke to come for her rescue. They think they can trap and murder Smoke(that'll happen when pigs fly). A man name Ralph Tinsdale and two other misfits escaped from the infamous Yuma Prison, these three men main thrust was to make sure Smoke paid for imprisoning them. A bunch of scalawags who should never be allowed to live with descent people again. Well that's one adventure, next adventure involves horse rustlers and cattle hustlers. It's a hot mess, Smoke loses a lot of his horse drivers on this trip. In fact he loses all his ranch hands who helped him drive his herd of horses to sell to the Army. Almost loses his life. All these bushwackers were led by Reno Jim Yurain, an underhanded, sneaky snarky backstabbing pole cat who stopped at nothing to hustle Smoke's horses and cattle. This gang killed raped and d inflicted whatever havoc they wanted. All I will suffer is Smoke prevailed through all the hardships, inclement weather, shoot outs and the slaughter of his friends who always have his back. A couple incidents will make your eyes water..sad sad sad..To all you LOVERS of GOOD westerns...keep your coffee hot and watch your back trail...
This was another great book in the last mountain man series can't wait to read the next one. I wish I could find some of the older ones in this series.
