Smoke going undercover to infiltrate an outlaw town is one of the most hilarious parts of any Johnstone book. Of course it is filled with several great gun fights that you would expect from this series.
Good Smoke Jensen shoot 'em up. First Smoke heads to an outlaw ruled town to seek revenge for the shooting of his wife. Then he and a couple of fellow gunslingers head to New Hampshire to protect his wife's hometown.
I have read a lot of books by Johnstone. Obviously, they are ghost written since he died a long time ago. I have really enjoyed them, but this one is absolute schlock. Repetitive phrasing and thought processes made for a boring read. I don't know who wrote this, but I hope they don't write any more books for the Johnstone estate.
I have been reading at least one book at a time since I wondered into a library at the age of 9. I'm 78 now, I have no idea the number of western fiction books I've read. I'm a college grad, retired social studies, history, civics teacher. I've read Carl Marx and Mark Levin among countless other fiction and non fictional works, so rarely do I run into a new descriptive phrase but William W. Johnstone gave me a pearl of one in this book. The phrase has to do with interracial relations and an apple and it makes sense. He writes with a sense of humor, romance and common sense, not a common occurrence. I'll read and own every book he writes and I highly recommend you do also, you will enjoy.
Seriously? Smoke Jensen going undercover in purple pants and a red shirt pretending to be a sissy. Beyond stupid. Sally entertaining her well educated but not to bright parents with wild west stories that they find shocking and unbelievable. Her father and brother are lawyers haven't they ever read a book or discussed justice outside the New England area. The Marshall's and Indians follow this flake into a absurdly dangerous and degenerate town. Unbelievable. I have read books by this author that I have really liked. This however is probably the worst book I have ever read and that covers a lot of territory. A DNF IN CAPITAL LETTERS.

Wordy, predictable G-rated western. Towards the end filled with an abundance of unneeded characters. Presumably this is a book series, though the story can stand alone. I only had one of the series and don't plan to seek out the rest. I enjoy history/ historical fiction and thought this might teach me something about the old west. Sadly, it did not.
The basic story is pretty good. The action is well plotted. Unfortunately it gets a little eye-rolling with the cheesy dialogue and Johnson's insistence on making Smoke Jensen essentially Superman with a gun. I may stop this series here.
Very good western series. The story of Smoke Jensen, trained by the last of the mountain men as a boy. If you like men's adventure and westerns then you will enjoy the series. Recommended
Ayn Rand writes a western. In this book, more paragraphs are dedicated to the alleged libertarian/objectivist philosophy of righteous western gun fighters than to actual action.
But this book does answer the unasked question, "How would a ten-man versus ten-man simultaneous showdown read if it were written in boring prose?"
Supposedly Johnstone can write an exciting tale. This particular book must have been used to fulfill a contractual obligation.
I'll stick with Louis L'Amour ("The Sacketts" series), Alistair MacLean ("Breakheart Pass"), Jon Sharpe ("The Trailsman" series), Craig Johnson ("Longmire" series), Tony Hillerman's mysteries, Edgar Rice Burroughs' westerns, Leigh Brackett's western, Tabor Evans' "Longarm" series, and even Asa "Forrest" Carter's two "Outlaw Jose Wales" books.
After Bury, Idaho, and Fontana, Colorado, Smoke tried to hang up his guns to be a rancher and farmer. Two years later, the night Raiders changed all that. Smoke was a hundred miles away herding cattle when he heard the news. He raced back home. His wife, Sally was alive but had been shot three times. Sally had heard their names; Daggit, LaPiere, and Moore, gunslicks for Rex Davidson. Sally was also pregnant. When she recovered sufficiently, she boarded a train for the East, for an operation to remove bullet fragments and for the birth of the baby. Disguised as a fancy pants artist, Smoke went looking for his targets, finding them in an outlaw town called Dead River. The outlaws had had their way for years. Torturing, robbing, raping, and looting. Now the tables would be turned. But it's not over.
This book was absolutely wonderful, I could not put it down, so I didn't! It was so exciting and lots of action packed scenes throughout, lots of drama and mysteries solved, lots of fun parts and sad ones too. Definitely a must read, for excitement galore and lots of fun parts too. Exciting moments and characters who will keep you turning those pages.. this Author is magnificent so hold on to you hats and don't miss this one! 📚🤠🐝🎶
More gunfights and fast action with an eye for revenge against the men who attacked his family.
Smoke Jensen goes undercover as a sketch artist, and the clothes he wore and the slight English accent the narrator gave the character while underground was hilarious and unexpected for a book in this genre.
Several installments in this series are free on Audible until 10/7, and each could be listened to as a standalone.
Another Johnstone classic. When men were men and the law wasn't something turned upside down by some sleazy lawyers. This book shows what happens to bad men who do bad things. It shows that victims are more important than the criminals. If only some of our politicians had some of the old West backbone.
After Sally was shot several times Smoke took care of her. He also found out she was pregnant. Smoke sent her home to her family in New Hampshire to be safe and have her babies. Smoke meets York at Dead River. After grueling fight they destroyed the lawless town but Davidson and Safety escaped. Lots of action for Smoke, York, and Louis Longmont.
Smoke Jensen and friends are cleaning out the outlaw town of Dead River and they do a good job except that some of them get away and then plot revenge against Smoke and his wife's family in New Hampshire. A long train ride later, Smoke, Longmont and York are all deputized as U.S. marshals. Needless to say, they foil the bank robbery and save the town. A very entertaining story.
Another great story with Smoke Jensen. This was truly a fast paced and calculated of getting rid of the outlaws that do utterly sadistic things to innocent men, women and children with no consensus.
The idea was off beat and a bit silly. I hope I can read more adventures of Smoke without recalling his venture into the absurd. Other Than that diversion, I liked the tale.
Really enjoyed reading about the old west. Johnstone has a real sense of humor. I really enjoyed meeting Sally's family I haven't laughed that hard reading an oater.. I believe you will too. Pamjr39
Wow! This was a great book. Thank you for allowing me to share it. It brought in the whole country as Smoke and his friends dug out a big nest of evil doers and brought them to Western style justice
The story provided the reader, me, with insightful knowledge on how one would hope for such times again. I thought it was genius the way you brought in York and he found his match.
Don't touch a man's woman. Don't threaten a man's family. Don't expect mercy if you've given none. Not all things are as they seem. Highly recommended for adult readers. Very graphic.
William johnstone, once again showed why he's the best writer, from Ben Raines to smoke jensen, you will always love reading his books, rest in peace Mr Johnstone
