An excellent collection of landmark papers in microbiology originally published by Prentice-Hall in 1961, but still available from the American Society of Microbiology. The papers were translated, when necessary, and edited by Dr. Thomas Brock (who I think was the discoverer of hyperthermophile Archaea and bacteria living at Yellowstone). There are 57 papers that run from a 1677 letter from Antonie van Leeuwenhoek about Observations … concerning little animals… to a 1940 paper by Donald Woods on the mechanism of action of sulphanilimide. These papers are fascinating and will give a superior foundation in the study of the history of microbiology.
(The earliest paper is actually one by Girolamo Fracastoro on the nature of contagion from 1546.)
