Calling people in (versus calling people out): -I'm curious. What was your intention when you said . . .? -It sounded like you said___. Is that what you meant to say? -I wonder how others might interpret your words/actions? -I don't find that funny. Please explain how that's funny to you. (page 55)
Avoid apologizing: -I just want to share ** skip the "just" -I may be wrong, but. . . **Here's what I know as of now. -Sorry to bother you. **When you have a moment, can we talk/do, etc? -I hope that's okay. **Thanks for considering . . . (page 64)
Dealing with invasive questions: -What makes you ask that? -I'm surprised your comfortable asking that question (can be done with a laugh to ease the tension) -Be direct--I'm not okay answering/talking about that. -Ask them the same question. Just b/c they answer doesn't mean you have to ("Oh how nice for you" and then change the topic.) (page 68)
Both of our times are valuable: -I'm glad we could find a time to meet (versus thanks so much for making time in your hectic schedule) -Don't hurry --(I called this meeting so we can review these 3 items) -Don't apologize--(I'd like to look at one more point together before we wrap up) -Accept that you are already an expert (pgs. 76-77)
Just enoughness--"every good thing, including rest, does not need to be earned (page 84)."
You don't Owe anyone an Over-explanation: "Sit with the discomfort of others. You might feel crummy telling someone no, but you can't live your life w/o ever disappointing folks (page 87)"
If there's one thing overthinkers have in common, it's a tendency to overlook or ignore the physical cues coming from our bodies. Research has shown that overthinking can exacerbate depression, increase negative thinking, and impair problem solving (page 87)
Put things in their right compartment: "Research shows that part of the negative victim experience is pervasiveness. Victims assume that failure in one area of life equates to failure in life overall. [But compartmentalize that "failure" instead.] page 90
LARA: Listen, affirm, Respond, and Ask Questions
Exercise Silence: (check out 2021 Rezvani Youtube video on silence)
When to use silence in negotiation 1) Right after you make a request and 2) Right after your counterpart answers you. Count to 7 and keep a neutral expression (page 114).
Defy Time Pressure: Delay answers on “exploding offers.” Tell them I need to look at my calendar and get back to you before I can answer or I need to think about it or I want to talk with So & So first.
-You never have to agree to a time limit, simply because one is thrown at you. -Don’t apologize for things you haven’t done wrong. “I checked my schedule and unfortunately, I won’t be able to help this time.” (pages 122-123)
Regarding money/salary: -Lean on what you can justify. Your opening number should be the most aggressive figure you *can rationally defend.* Bring data, research, another job offer you can point to as evidence for you strong opening number. “Based on my research of position x, I’m looking in the neighborhood of $96,000.”
-Make it the highest number you can say without laughing out loud. Would the offer thrill and delight you if you were to get it? “I’d like to be at the $96,000 mark.”
Experiments conducted at Univ. of Idaho (Todd Thorsteinson) showed that study participants were more likely to offer a subject $5,000 more in salary if she asked for implausibly high salary compared to asking for a lower salary. Bravery literally pays (pages 124-125).
-The point is no is not always the end of the story. Be tenacious (keep applying/asking, etc.) (page 126)
***Don’t wait until you feel ready. Do it afraid. Security is an illusion anyway. Imagine walking through life knowing you can do scary hard things. What would you do if you weren’t afraid? (page 132)**
When put on the spot: Ask yourself-- What-So What-Now What? -What matters? Why is that important? What actions make sense going forward (page140)
“If your compassion doesn’t include yourself, it’s incomplete”
I found it more relatable than some of the other self-help “girl boss” books I’ve read. It gets more into the nitty-gritty of guilt-motivated work and how to break out of the spiral of self-sabotaging by burning yourself out then feeling guilty about lacking motivation and trying to just push through your emotions.
Definitely gonna look back at my highlights and notes.
"I enjoyed reading “Quick Confidence: Be Authentic, Boost Connections, and Make Bold Bets on Yourself" by Selena Rezvani who in my opinion is a highly intelligent and exceptionally talented writer who has written a clear, concise, and direct self-help book about gaining more confidence. The title is apropos since the author gives “Quick” bullets of information and strongly encourages self-awareness to act confidently in situations where you may have lacked obvious and logical assertiveness in the past.
I particularly enjoyed her writing style and found this book easy to read since it goes directly to the subject and provides excellent and practical information for personal development that produces real results.
Throughout the book, this dynamic author provides examples and exercises for the reader and I enjoyed her energy and expressiveness to encourage the reader to simply get up and do things to build self-esteem and create a good sense of well-being.
For example, she discusses a new simple, useful, and intriguing confidence-building method that she calls the “Dog Code” which I found highly feasible. Here is a brief excerpt from her book to show you what I mean,
“Have you ever noticed how dogs greet us humans? If they’re anything like my Newfoundland pup Midnight, they don’t hesitate. They don’t overthink it. They don’t talk it over with their friends before making a move.
“A dog’s nature is to be the first to make a connection. To come right up to you and greet you. And I think there’s an important confidence insight we can take from that…
“So how about it? Why not be the first to:
• Say hi and introduce yourself in a group?
• Invite your new colleague to a networking or learning
session you’re attending.
• Notice someone who’s isolated and might appreciate an
invitation to join you?...
“As you adopt “dog code,” you may need to be courageous. Sometimes it feels vulnerable to be the first. If you’re more introverted or reserved, it might feel challenging to “go right up” to perfect strangers and start speaking. But you can still do it. You might also need courage to challenge the culture of your organization or team—especially if being friendly or “being the first” is not the norm. It takes nerve to buck the status quo! But when you proactively welcome others, you show humility, curiosity, bravery, and a collaborative mindset. These are some of the best traits of true leaders.”
I happened to be reading this while I was waiting for my car repair to be done in a crowded waiting room. The author’s enthusiasm made me pause, get up from my seat and begin talking with a person standing near me. I introduced myself - and that is something I rarely do.
To my surprise, it turned into an interesting long conversation. The stranger was an electrician and gave me good advice on correcting something in my home that had been problematic -- nothing had worked to correct before. It turned out that the electrician felt very proud he could help with his advice while I felt happy and more self-assured knowing I used the "dog code" for the first time, and it worked well. I plan to do so in the future keeping in mind this original concept created by this author.
James Clear wrote, “Self-improvement is the improvement of one's knowledge, status, or character by one's own efforts. It's the quest to make ourselves better in any and every facet of life.”
I certainly agree with that definition and in my opinion, sometimes changing old ways while being in the lifelong pursuit of bettering yourself can be very difficult. However, this author's enthusiasm and original ideas worked for me even though in the past I was, at times, very critical and disappointed with self-help books. It was certainly a breath of fresh air to read this excellent book.
In my view, this is the type of book you want to read several times and carry with you. Life can knock you back and down in the pits. Turning to the thoughts in this book helps you get on your way again with perhaps even more vigor, in my view.
All in all, I felt this book was very well done and will help many people. Highly recommended!
It was my pleasure to receive a free copy of this book but that does not in any way affect my opinions in this review of this exceptional book.

Empowered by this realization, we are emboldened to claim our space, express our authentic selves, and assertively pursue what we truly deserve.

One of the most valuable lessons in the book revolves around managing invasive questions. These questions can arise from employers, coworkers, or even well-meaning relatives who may unknowingly overstep boundaries. The techniques presented in the book not only provide practical solutions to navigate such situations but also do so with tact and grace. By responding politely, readers can comfortably extricate themselves from uncomfortable situations without resorting to rudeness or evasion. This valuable skill allows individuals to preserve their confidence while maintaining harmonious relationships.
Quick Confidence is an invaluable resource for building confidence in introverts and individuals from all walks of life. It sheds light on the consequences of excessive politeness, where individuals may unknowingly sacrifice their own confidence to avoid stepping on others' toes. I recommend this book, and it has a prominent place in my personal library.
Rezvani's approach transcends the conventional focus on self-assurance; it encompasses authenticity, meaningful connections, and daring action-taking, setting it apart in the expansive landscape of self-help literature. She inspires individuals to step out of their comfort zones, embrace risk, and recognize that confidence is not merely about feeling good but also about taking proactive action. Her personal anecdotes and success stories from various individuals serve as motivating examples for those seeking transformative changes in their lives.
However, it's worth noting that some readers might find the book's pace a tad slow due to Rezvani's thorough exploration of each concept. The abundance of exercises and self-assessment tools could potentially overwhelm those seeking a quick confidence boost without extensive self-reflection but this does not take away from the effectiveness of this book.
Self-assurance and self-confidence encompass a deep sense of belief in one's abilities and talents, without veering into arrogance but rather embracing a realistic perspective. Genuine self-assurance does not entail feelings of superiority over others; rather, it embodies an internal, serene knowledge of one's capabilities.
The power of self-confidence lies in its ability to equip us with the readiness to confront life's experiences. When we possess confidence in ourselves, we are naturally drawn toward people and opportunities, seeking to engage with them rather than shying away. Moreover, self-confidence grants us the resilience to persevere and try again when faced with setbacks. However, lacking self-confidence has the opposite effect, hindering personal growth and creating barriers to progress.

I must admit, I find myself in the target audience for this book, and I resonate deeply with the idea of cultivating authentic self-confidence rather than resorting to the often-cited "fake it till you make it" approach prevalent in many self-help books. I firmly believe that the key to overcoming feelings of insecurity lies in the sincere and robust construction of genuine confidence and self-worth. Each chapter distinctly focuses on a specific target, akin to taking one step at a time towards the ultimate goal. This deliberate sequencing serves as a robust foundation for achieving any objective. "Quick Confidence" might seem like just another self-help book, the sort that dangles grand promises but often delivers little more than tired platitudes. However, once you peel back the cover, you'll find it’s something altogether different—a genuine guide for those wrestling with power dynamics, seeking to build true confidence and navigate toxic waters.
Rezvani hits the nail on the head by urging readers to cast aside overthinking and lean into their strengths. Her practical approach to negotiation, overcoming setbacks, and steadily boosting self-assurance covers the physical, mental, and social realms of empowerment. That mantra, “I 400% belong here,” serves as a rallying cry for the uncertain, while her advice on maintaining a neutral resting face (NRF) is a clever way to level the playing field in fraught situations.
The LARA framework—Listening, Affirming, Responding, Asking—shines as a powerful tool for true engagement. And though some strategies, like visualization, might feel familiar to old hands, Rezvani digs deeper, providing insights that linger long after reading.
As I read, I found myself absorbing invaluable lessons, such as the perils of over-apologizing and its tendency to drain our strength. Her methods for managing negative emotions—like using physical gestures and stream-of-consciousness writing—are practical tools for navigating inner turmoil and maintaining focus.
In the end, "Quick Confidence" is a well-researched self-help book that exceeds expectations. I’d recommend it to anyone eager to boost their self-esteem and navigate tricky situations, particularly those facing power dynamics in their lives. It offers sound strategies for managing emotions and enhancing communication, making it a worthy read for both newcomers and seasoned self-help veterans alike.
