Jill Shalvis is a NYT, USA Today, and Amazon Top 100 bestselling author of small-town romance and romcoms, known for big feels, found family, and plenty of shenanigans.

If you love small-town chaos, meddling friends and neighbors, sizzling chemistry, and heroes who fall hard for the one woman they absolutely did not plan on, you’re in the right place. Jill’s books blend laugh-out-loud moments with emotional gut punches, slow-burn tension, and deeply earned happily ever afters.

She writes the stories she loves to read: small-town romance and romantic comedies packed with heart, heat, second chances, grumpy/sunshine sparks, and the kind of found-family vibes that make you want to move right into the pages. Many of her series are perfect for binge-reading, and a number of her books are available in Kindle Unlimited and at major retailers.

When she’s not writing, she’s probably plotting new ways to torture her characters, avoiding laundry, or daydreaming about fictional men and the strong, complicated women who bring them to their knees—and then making them work for it.

So sweet and fun. Pretty clean romance - just one scene, but light.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This story has hit so many touching areas. The author takes on tender subjects with grace and care. She has characters that are real, compassionate, and loving. Her stories are the definition of heartwarming.
In The Sweetheart List, she tells a story that is believable and touching. Shalvis writes in such a way that you feel the emotion pouring out just like you were inside the story too. She takes on real-life issues that you can identify with and take to heart.
I love the characters she has created in this book. They are warm and humorous; people you want to know and become. Small-town real life is the epitome of a Shalvis story and we wouldn’t be the same without them!
This book is a shining example of the perfect read this summer! Romantic and sweet, not to be missed!
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Headline Books.
The Sweetheart List is a sweet and heartfelt romance perfect for a beach or holiday read. Harper moves to Sunrise Cove to open a bakery and start afresh. When she mets Bodie (her landlord and fellow business neighbour next door) and a teen runaway, Harpers' new start has bumps and turns thrown in the road ahead of her. I loved the realism of each character in this book and discovering more about each. All have layers to them and secrets in their closets. I loved how big Harpers heart is and how she took a teenager who wasn't her own under her wing - this was so heartwarming and restores faith that there is still kindness in the world. I was really routing for them all and wanted a happy ending for each and every one of them. This is the first book by Jill Shalvis I've read and won't be the last.
Initial Thoughts
This was fantastic! I had a great time getting to know the characters in this story. Harper is ready to find some joy in her life when she moves to Sunrise Cove. She soon meets her landlord, Bodie, who also owns and runs the tavern next door. Her path also crosses a lost teenage girl that she decides to take under her wing. I loved watching these characters open up to each other and I wanted to see good things happen for each and every one of them. I listened to the audiobook and Andi Arndt did a great job of bringing this story to life.
Another great book by Jill Shalvis. Harper moves back to Lake Tahoe to open her own bakery. She meets Bodie who is her landlord. Then she meets Ivy who has come to town with her own secrets. What a heartwarming story this was and she just pulls you in and it was fun getting to know the characters. Thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins Publishers for this early release in exchange for my honest review. To be published June 2023. I hope to read more from this author.
Reading a Jill Shalvis book is like a warm hug for me. It’s soft and cuddly and never fails to make me feel squishy inside, seriously such a delight. She writes the most adorable and hilarious romances but there’s always something a little bit extra too making her books such multidimensional reads.
This is the fourth book in the Sunrise Cove series but you don’t have to read them in order. Each book follows a completely new set of characters but they’re all in the same town. When I saw this one followed Harper as she opens a bakery I was so excited, it doesn’t get cuter than that. Bodie was exactly the type of swoony worthy hero I expect from the author, he’s a closed off and quiet guy but he has his reasons and those reasons really tugged on my heartstrings. Ivy broke my heart and made me want to mother her so hard and her dynamic with both Harper and Bodie was almost as fun for me to read about as their burgeoning romance. Loved this one so much, JS just keeps getting better and better!
This is an insta-family book. A teenager finds her dad that she has never met & gets help from a bakery owner along the way who falls in love with her dad.
I think this is my most favorite book I have ever read by this author. I loved all the side characters like his brothers, mothers, abuela, etc.
I loved the town/area and let’s not forget Ham- the cutest dog who plays a large part in the story.
The spice level in this one is minimal. It is more of a heartwarming story about finding family and yourself.
Harper needs a change. Her fiancé dumps her, her job fails to bring joy, and her father barely acknowledges her existence. So, she decides to take life by the horns and move to the last place she was happy: Sunrise Cove, a town by Lake Tahoe. She’s going to go forward with her dream of running her own bakery and as luck would have it one of the downtown shops is up for lease. It’s a little run down but with some work it will be quaint and cute. Harper doesn’t expect help, doesn’t expect to make friends so quickly, but she’s but she’s gifted with both. Romance is far from her mind, but of course when you least expect it is when you fall hard.
Bodie, her landlord isn’t looking for romance either, he’s just home to run the family bar after his dad’s unexpected death. But sweet and kind Harper is hard to resist.
Ivy, a teenager with a mission, has nowhere to stay so she sneaks into Harper’s shop for a night to sleep safe and out of the cold, thinking the place empty. Instead, she’s surprised by Harper who doesn’t kick her out. Harper’s an unexpected refuge and friend.
I love the thought of picking up and moving if a place is not bringing you happiness. I kept picturing downtown Truckee because it sounded so like the cute downtown area described.
There were some bumps in the road from Ivy’s past and just from being a teenager! I thought she was pretty darn lucky because Harper and Bodie were so lovely to her.
The Sweetheart List
was a feel-good romance full of love, friendship, and laughs! Loved that little surprise twist in the epilogue!
A copy was kindly provided by Avon in exchange for an honest review.
What do you do when life sucks and you need a do-over? You pack up and move to the place where you last remember being truly happy and open a bakery. Sounds perfect, right?
Harper Shaw does just that and her first met cute with Bodie Campbell, the owner of the local tavern to the left of her bakery, was hilarious. From that moment, I was all in. Shalvis has a way of pulling me in and offering delicious, heartfelt stories with characters I want to befriend.
On the other side of her bakery, soon to be called Sugar Pine Bakery, is a bookshop owned by her new BFF. Well, it will take some delicious cookies and heart to hearts, but it’s coming. Turns out Bodie and his brothers own the stripe of store fronts including the bakery, Harper will be leasing. Did I mention I love stories involving brothers? Hehe.
A runaway, grandmas and some cute critters rounded out the tale. Harper has some baggage, but so does Bodie. I loved seeing them come together and figure things out. Family, shenanigans and a dash of heat made this tale a win for me. Side romances, found family and touching nature, rounded out the tale. I cannot wait to return for more stories.
Fans of small-town romance, families and foodie novels will want to settle in with The Sweetheart List or pack it in their beach bag. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer
One of my friends loves Jill Shalvis books and I wish I could because she has a TON of audiobooks available through my library. However, I think this is the last one I'm going to try because this book irritated me so much.
This is full of the tropiest of tropes. And so many things that annoyed the crap out of me.
The heroine won't accept help. Yes, I understand if you don't want to rely on others. However, when you don't allow your landlord to do the stuff they are contractually obligated to do--cleaning and painting and making sure everything works--before you move in, then you're an idiot.
There were so many other things that drove me insane, but I'll stop here and let this go.
This book had potential but since the author made their mission to fit every trope under the sun on this one-book, things felt repetitive and just boring. The story started very relatable but then fell flat. At some point, every character was a strong individual but once the relationship started happening their personas disintegrated into a ball of mush. The book is also supposed to be 370 pages but it is only 243 pages. There is a typo on page 243 on the epilogue, where is says: “But Ivy was her happiest in Sunrise Cove at her dad’s Cabin, with him and Ivy and Ham”. I think is supposed to say Harper and Ham
THE SWEETHEART LIST (SUNRISE COVE #4)
BY: JILL SHALVIS
I didn't realize that this sweet, and charming romance-family feel good book by the very talented writer Jill Shalvis novel was part #4 in a series, until I started typing my review. Sometimes reading experiences that are intense need a much lighter book directly afterwards. This one was exactly what I needed in between reading a historical novel featuring survival. I was grateful to have this one to read by a new to me author, because it was lighter and restored my equilibrium getting me back on track. This can absolutely be read as a standalone without having to worry about missing anything about the characters backstories.
Most people would classify this as a beach read, and it probably is if I'm completely honest. It was a novel that I read quickly with short chapters that takes place in a quaint community called Sunrise Cove. With cobblestone streets with shops in Lake Tahoe. Harper has just made a daring move from San Diego to Sunrise Cove to start her life over after a bad break up. She has leased a building that she has dreamed of with an updated kitchen to open her own bakery featuring family recipes that are like heirlooms to her.
I liked this novel a lot because it was an entertaining reading experience where it also had snappy dialogue, had all likable characters, and enough to the plot that kept me turning the pages. I will definitely be watching what this bestselling author writes in the future. I'm also happy to see that she has written many books already, since I plan on seeking out from her back list when I feel in the mood. I've recently been dealing with a medical issue that came on out of the blue, and feel exhausted from trying to get a diagnosis. So this was perfect.
It mostly revolves around a big family being supportive with one another with a romance. Also the main character Harper takes in a young girl who appears to have run away traveling from Chicago. The characters have minor flaws, and they are figuring things out. I'm surprised that I have never come across this author before, considering how much I loved this one novel. It is upbeat, and I really enjoyed it.
So many great aspects of this comforting romance!
I loved the quaint community setting, the flawed but loving characters, the touching back stories, the chemistry, the hope for fresh starts, and the beautiful themes of forgiveness and grace. The descriptions of yummy baked goods were a plus as well.
Harper leaves behind her life as she’s known it and returns to the last place that she was truly happy - a small mountain town by Lake Tahoe called Sunrise Cove. There is some work to be done on the apartment she’s renting and to get her new bakery up and running, but she finds helpful support from the hot bartender/property owner Bodie and her new bestie who has a bookstore next door. Then she takes in a runaway named Ivy. They all seem to have some hurts from their pasts and some secrets they’re holding close, but as trust is gained and truth is revealed there might be some healing and connection with the beginning of something new.
The small town support is a fun vibe, along with Bodie’s extended family. The relationship between Harper and Bodie is fun (and unexpectedly spicy.) And the unique situation of Ivy and some of her friends adds a little mystery and intrigue into to the story. I wasn’t always sure how things would all work out, but I held out hope for a HEA and was thankful to get it.
This book is in a series, but I completely enjoyed it even though it’s the first that I’ve read from the series. It can definitely be read as a stand alone.
A sweet, heartfelt summer beach read about starting over, finding family and second chances.
I really enjoyed this women's fiction/romance set in a small town outside Tahoe that sees baker Harper Shaw and her giant dog opening a new bakery after her life implodes back home. Along the way she takes in a runaway teen girl and falls for the local bar owner who has his own wounds to heal.
Great on audio narrated by Andi Ardnt, Jill Shalvis is quickly becoming one of my favorite summer read authors! Recommended for fans of authors like RaeAnne Thayne, Dylan Newton or Mary Kay Andrews. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early audio copy in exchange for my honest review!
Harper is looking for a fresh start and a place to belong. Ivy is looking for family as well as a place to belong. Bodie has the family and the place, but is emotionally closed off to avoid being hurt. This turned out to be a good read with a fun, assorted cast, a bit of emotional drama, and heartwarming tugs.
I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Sweetheart List, by Jill Shalvis, is the fourth book in the Sunrise Cove series, but easily can be read as a standalone. This is an absolutely delightful, feel-good romance with a hearty dose of found-family and inspiring familial bonds. I loved everything about this story, with the exception of the spice, which is purely personal preference.
In this story we follow Harper Shaw, who after heartbreak, bravely finds her way back to the last place she was happy. She is planning on starting her own bakery, but first has a less than warm-hearted meet cute with the closed-up, brooding Body, tavern owner and member of the larger-than-life Campbell clan. She also unexpectedly comes across, Ivy, a 16 year-old runaway with a secret mission of her own.
I loved the main female protagonist, the newly forged friendships, the story of sweet, temporarily homeless Ivy, her backstory, and the family members who embraced them. There was a lot to this novel that either made you pause and consider, or made you smile and sigh. And I suppose the highest compliment is that I wanted to stay and be a part of this world with these people, and hated to see their stories end.
The Sweetheart List by Jill Shalvis is a sweet and heartwarming romance. Harper and Brodie are well developed, relatable and likeable and deserve their HEA. Ivy adds a different twist to the story. Brodie's brothers add many humorous moments and insights into the family background. Ham aka the big, goofy and loveable dog is a favorite character.
4 - "Love doesn't suck with you..." Stars!
Another great addition to the Sunrise Cove series, set around the Campbell family in general but with the POV's coming from Ivy, Harper and Bodie.
Ivy; essentially a runaway comes to Tahoe in search of the father she's never met, Harper returning to Sunrise Cove as it's the last place she remembers being happy, and Bodie coming home his family after his ATF job is taken away from him for being unfit for service after his last take-down went south. All three of them have their issues and the book works through them while they work to build relationships with each other.
Ham the dog provided light relief and the rest of Bodie's family added to the depth of the story, and although there is the inevitable drama, Shalvis as always kept me invested in the characters and the stories playing out, I wish that some of the secondary characters were actually left alone to actually have their own stories be the focus of a follow up book because I felt the issues they were dealing with and the resolution felt like it had been shoe-horned in and a little vague in clarity, but overall another great read!
The Sweetheart List by Jill Shalvis is set in Lake Tahoe (Sierra Nevada Mountains) and includes a few of my favorite tropes.
After Harper’s life falls apart, she packs up her most important things including her beloved dog and sets off for her favorite place, Lake Tahoe. She intends to fulfill her dream of opening a bakery. This bakery is located next to a tavern owned by sexy and grumpy Bodie Campbell. After an unfortunate and accidental initial encounter, it turns out that Bodie is also her landlord. A runaway teenager shows up to complicate everything.
I love grumpy/sunshine, starting over, women entrepreneurs, supportive family, and found family tropes, so the reading experience was engaging and satisfying. The heartfelt (and somewhat contrived) conclusion requires a suspension of disbelief.
Although The Sweetheart List is #4 in a series, it can be read as a stand-alone (I have not read the first three). If you enjoy this one, it’s nice to know there are other titles in the Lake Tahoe/Sierra Nevada world.
I enjoy an occasional romance if it also includes substantial content and thoughtful themes. I especially appreciated the runaway teenager storyline here. As I mentioned earlier, I think the conclusion to this storyline is a bit contrived and requires a suspension of disbelief. However, it is still memorable and heartfelt.
I’m recommending The Sweetheart List for fans of mountain and bakery settings (especially the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Lake Tahoe). If you enjoy (mildly spicey) romance with some substantial content and are looking for a beach read, pick up The Sweetheart List. Evidently, Jill Shalvis is a popular and prolific author, but this is my first of hers to read. If you’ve read Shalvis previously, you might add this new release to your TBR.
Whenever I read Shalvis' books the recent years, it felt like I was treated by COZY romance.
Although this book had death in the family (off page, including death of overdosed) and teenage runaways (whom in wrong situation could be homeless), somehow, the way that these characters finally come together, the family they had, I felt like it was giving me a big HUG. Heck, some scenes even made me sniffled a bit because GAH FAMILY IS THE BEST (in this book anyway)
Yes, it can be tad unrealistic, nobody is this great in real life, but I don't care. I love romance that gives me all the cozy. I ADORED how Bodie and Harper developed their relationship. I adored the Cambells. I adored how Ivy being integrated into the family. I just ADORED this book!
2.5 stars. I can see this being an easy beach read, the type of book that you might find in your lake house rental. You read it because you forgot to bring your own book. It’s fine.
The writing felt a bit stilted and like I was missing something most of the time. Like there was plan in the author’s head, but it didn’t transcribe as well on paper. The characters and their relationships to each other could have been developed a bit more and I think it would have filled in the gaps.
As a Tahoe girl though, I did appreciate the setting of the book. Definitely felt nostalgic and made me think of my own summers there.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
The Sweetheart List, the newest novel by Jill Shalvis, returns readers to the picturesque town of Sunrise Cove. As is customary of the series, readers:
1. Meet a whole new cast of characters who own their hearts before the story ends.
2. Receives a story designed give one all the feels.
In this, the fourth installment of the Sunrise Cove series readers meets Harper Shaw, Bodie Campbell and Ivy Roberts. Harper moved to Sunrise Cove, looking for a fresh start. Life dealt her some massive blows and so she returns to one place that brought her joy as a child. She is looking forward to her new life. A life where nothing or no one would prey on her emotions and one where she hopes to achieve success in her new business venture.
Bodie returned home after his time as an agent with the ATF expired. He was not in a good place physically and mentally after being wounded on the job and losing both his work partner and dad tragically. He blames himself, but thanks to a loving family, he could heal and move forward.
Then there was the mysterious Ivy Roberts who came to Sunrise Cove for one reason, but ended up with so many reasons to remain in the beach town.
The Sweetheart List is a sweetheart of a read. Getting to know the characters was a delightful experience. From the main to the secondary characters. We see several relationships developing, but the ones which warmed my heart were those between Harper and Ivy, Ivy and Bodie and Harper and Bodie. The bond between Harper and Ivy developed from shared circumstances despite their differences in age. For someone who found it difficult to trust, meeting Harper changed her whole perspective. Harper had a compassionate spirit, which pulls in everyone she came in contact with.
Harper’s relationship with Bodie started out on a fun note. She’s sworn off men, but she never expected Bodie to enter her life. Likewise, Bodie had no interest in a relationship, but meeting Harper changed all that.
Whenever I pick up a book by Shalvis, I expect an entertaining read. She did not disappoint. The story hidden between the pages was entertaining. I had fun returning to Sunrise Cove and look forward to my next visit.
Jill Shalvis’s The Sweetheart List truly embraces the phrase “find your joy” from the very start.
I loved Harper and how she finally decided to live her life for herself and not for everyone else. How she was determined to “find her joy” by returning to the last place she truly remembered being happy—Sunrise Cove on the banks of Lake Tahoe. Harper’s tenacity and as well as her love of baking led her to follow her dream and open her own bakery—and also helped her maneuver through her budding relationship with Bodie.
I loved Harper and Bodie as a couple. They were the perfect balance and brought out the best in each other. Bodie was instrumental in helping Harper get over her past relationships and to find her joy. And once Harper and Bodie got through their hurdles, it was just fantastic to see how their relationship grew and developed.
And of course, there’s Ivy. The teenager who managed to finagle her way into everyone’s hearts in Sunrise Cove. She harbored a few secrets—big secrets—but once revealed it was amazing how Harper, Bodie, Bodie’s family and their mutual friends rallied to support her.
I love this amazing series and can’t wait for the next one! ~ Missy, 5 stars
The Sweetheart List is the fourth book in Jill Shalvis’ newest series, Sunrise Cove. I’m late to the Jill Shalvis party, but I started reading this series last year and it quickly became one of my favorite romance series. Each book has just been such a heartwarming delightful read filled with characters who are so well drawn that I feel like I know them. I also love the Lake Tahoe setting and I really like how even though the books are all interconnected by the setting, they can all be read as standalones.
The Sweetheart List follows Harper Shaw. Harper has abandoned her old life, which was no longer bringing her joy, and has come to Sunrise Cove, the last place she remembers being truly happy, looking for a fresh start. When she goes to pick up the keys to the shop where she’s planning to open a bakery, she has a hilariously awkward meet cute with Bodie Campbell and then can’t seem to escape him no matter where she goes. He not only lives near her, but he also owns the tavern next to her shop, and he and his family are her landlords. The sparks fly between Harper and Bodie every time they cross paths and you can just tell they could be good together if they give it a shot.
As much as I adored Harper for her determination to get out there and find a happier life for herself, it was Bodie who really stole my heart. He suffered two major losses while he was away working for the ATF, and when he returns home, everyone else seems to have already finished grieving and moved forward. It broke my heart to see him struggling so much, but thankfully he has an incredible support system with his mom and his hilarious brothers. As Bodie himself says, his family loves hard.
I also fell hard for Ivy, the teenage runaway, who has come to Sunrise Cove on a mission. Not only did I fall hard for her, but so does Harper, who takes Ivy under her wing, and Bodie, who recognizes another soul who is struggling. Watching these three characters come together like a family truly warmed my heart even more so than the romantic possibilities between Harper and Bodie did.
The Sweetheart List is yet another gem of a story from Jill Shalvis. If charming settings, quirky lovable characters, hilarious antics involving wild animals, swoony romances, and found families are your vibe, then this one is a must read for you!
I really enjoyed this sweet story! I haven’t read any others in the series but this book definitely made me want to check them out! The story is well written and I really enjoyed the humor interspersed throughout. There are parts that are really unpredictable and focus on hard subjects, but there was nothing I personally found offensive. I would definitely recommend to anyone who like romantic comedies and heartfelt stories!
The Sweetheart List has everything I've come to love about Jill Shalvis's writing and crafting of story: a hard working heroine, a hero with a sprinkle of brooding Alpha but mostly is a total cinnamon role, family (both blood and found), humor and so much heart.
The Sweetheart List has a lot of moving pieces. I'd started the book and became crazy busy in the days after-so at a hair appointment where I knew I'd have nothing but time, I restarted the book and before I knew it, I'd breezed through the first 200 pages. It's that unputdownable. The romance is between Harper (newish to Sunrise Cove) and Bodie who has recently returned home after serving. We are also introduced to a teenage girl named Ivy who has come to Sunrise Cove looking for her father-and his back child support.
This book has been the bright spot in my reading year. It's like Jill knows when I'm in need of a fix-and we get a new release from her. I love love love Bodie's family so much. They are so welcoming, it felt like I the reader was welcomed in. I loved grumpy Shay who is a total contrast to her fun Abuela (who own the bookshop next to Harper's new bakery). This series just gets better and better with each book and Jill outdoes herself every time!
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of this book.
Harper Shaw is looking for a fresh start, a place that will spark joy for her, and decides to move to Lake Tahoe as this was the last place she found she was happy. She has aspirations to open a bakery in this town, which is located next to a tavern owned by Bodie Campbell, a grumpy, rough-and-tumble man, and a bookstore, owned by a woman, Shay, that ends up becoming her best friend. Harper feels like this is the place in which she will finally find happiness.
She meets a runaway teenager, Ivy, on her first night living in the bakery/apartment (her apartment is infested with rodents, so she decides to sleep in her unrenovated bakery). Harper has a soft spot for her and takes her in, not knowing the reason why Ivy came to Sunrise Cove in the first place. Secrets intertwine between Harper, Ivy, and Bodie, and it changes Harper in ways she didn't expect.
I thought that the tropes in the story were cute, if not maybe a little overplayed. The main character runs away from her life for a fresh start and a shoddy previous relationship; then, she finds a man that makes her believe in love again. Some books do this well (I've read one recently that did this in a way to keep me engaged), but I didn't think this one did. While I understand the intersection between the characters, I felt like Harper's story didn't have enough depth, so the author had to focus more on Ivy and Bodie's relationship. I was under the impression that Harper was the main character, not Ivy and Bodie.
I also felt like the writing was a little disjointed. There was some awkward transitions and the way in which the author narrated the story was a little cringy. It definitely could have afforded another editing round before going to print. I really wish that this would have been told in first-person instead of third-person with multiple perspectives as well. I liked having a well-rounded understanding of the story, but gaining empathy for each character from their own mouths may have kept me more interested.
That being said, once I found the motivation to pick up the story, it was an intriguing one for the most part. This isn't your typical romance necessarily. It is a combination between women's fiction and romance and leans more on familial love instead of romantic love.
I would still recommend this to someone looking for a beach read this summer despite my reservations. It's a light read that will keep you engaged once you pick it up, but don't expect your romance to be front-and-center in the story.
*I received a free copy of The Sweetheart List. This has in no way influenced my voluntary review which is honest and unbiased.*
I really, really enjoyed meeting Harper, Ham, Ivy and Bode - as well as going back to Lake Tahoe with their story.
Harper had finally decided to move on with her life, move to the last place she remembered being truly happy, and opening her own bakery. Things did not happen as planned once she arrived, though. Not only was it snowing in July, the place she had rented for both her bakery and apartment wasn’t ready yet. And she got a visitor in the late evening from Ivy, a runaway who was looking for her long lost father…
I loved that Harper and Ivy were so similar, even with their age difference. And they quickly trusted each other and were there for each other. Of course, none of them gave everything away that easily, and it took a while for them to truly share.
As they got to know each other, Harper also got to know Bodie, the sexy bartender who was one of her three landlords. Even though she had sworn off men, she felt a definite attraction to him. Bodie had never really thought that much about love, but he felt that same attraction.
Shalvis always writes stories that touch me right in the feels, and The Sweetheart List did that and more. There are friendships that are a bit complicated, because Shay didn’t want any new friends, however Harper didn’t have that much trouble winning her over. There is also more than one love story, and siblings who both look out for each other and tease each other without any mercy whatsoever.
This is a definite recommendation from me - if you like sweet romances with quirky but real characters, this is the story you should pick up this summer!
Harper Shaw is fleeing an unhappy life to start over again in Lake Tahoe. She's going to open a bakery. She arrives in the winter, her car slides and gets stuck, and she snipes rudely at the guy (Bodie) who tries to help her. When we get his POV at the bar he runs, there's a ton of backstory dump re his family. Harper arrives at the bar to get the keys to her rental unit. Bodie is supposed to give her the keys, and she snipes at him again.
You know the expression, "chewing the scenery"?
Key in hand, Harper is unlocking the door of the rental when she accidentally touches a big spider. She screams and falls down in the alley. Another business woman sees her, makes fun of her, and stalks off. Harper goes into the building which, as she was told, is unfit for habitation. In her sleeping bag, she "hears" the spider jiggling the doorknob. No, I am not joking. But it's not the spider, it's the homeless teenager we met at Bodie's bar. The teenager snipes at Harper. Harper convinces the kid to stay, gives her clothing and blankets, feeds her, and hires her on the spot to work in the bakery, even though the only way she could even see the girl's face is by the light of her phone.
Everybody loved this book so much, I just can't get into it. DNF.
