Mitchell Manor

Rate this book
Mitchell Manor is a place that holds a lot of secrets.

The Mitchells were one of the most prominent families in the area. In 1843, Theodore Mitchell's family and household staff was found murdered. When Theodore disappeared, rumors began accusing him of the crime. What would cause a normally well-mannered and well-liked individual to completely snap? Over one-hundred years would pass before the true answer to that question is discovered.

Elle Lewis is a novel writer looking for inspiration for her next book. She rented Mitchell Manor in hopes of removing herself from the distractions of the city. As soon as she arrives at the manor, strange events start to happen. Believing it's her imagination, Elle dismisses many of the occurrences. When things start to escalate, Elle can't ignore the manor anymore. She realizes it is her responsibility to find out what really happened the night of the murders.

This book has all the ingredients for a classic ghost story: a haunted house, evil spirits, time travel, and small-town rumors. Along with a little romance and humor, this book gives the reader a little bit of everything.

I have always loved to write but it wasn't until recently that I actually started to do something about it. I took a few online courses to improve my writing skills. I really enjoyed it and ended up writing my first book.

I love meeting and talking with other authors and readers! I think being an author is one of the greatest professions.

It is a blessing to create worlds that people can immerse themselves in.

Thank you NetGalley for accepting my request to read and review Mitchell Manor.

Author: S.R. Leinbeck
Published: 09/16/22
Genre: General Fiction (Adult) -- Mystery & Thrillers

Right around 100 pages, I call Novella; in this case, I see a long short story. This is a nice pick for a rainy or snowy day, if you are looking for a quick read.

There are strange occurrences in the house and people are there when needed. The mandatory creepy town and its people are present. I'm not spoiling, but will say, I would love BeBe. The superficial dueling love interest brought the cheesy factor way up.

If edited, this would make an interesting true short story or long magazine story.

This is independently published, sadly, it feels like a rough draft. I will say, I teared up the second time I read the ending. I didn't see it coming and wouldn't want it for me.

Given the right place and time, I would gift this.

This short novella is a ghost story with many twists and turns. I enjoyed the story overall though the love story was a little too instant love for my tastes.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

I was so happy to see a new haunted house mystery pop up over at Netgalley. I just love it! Especially with this spooky time. And this was a bit hit/miss in the end. Had fun moments, spooky moments, but at times it just frustrated or confused me.

The mystery of the mansion. I loved it. Loved the little messages on the laptop. Loved the whispers. The ghostly visions. The evil laughter and the children’s laughter (even if the last one wasn’t too bad in the end which is a change from normal). It was fun seeing her uncover new things, hints, and facts. Though I did think it was all a bit easy? I don’t know. I mean, here we have Evan and Harrison both from the families that had something to do with what happened in the past and neither of them knew what was going on and one even found out new things about his family which was just odd.

Bebe and Bart were such terrific characters and I absolutely loved them. I knew instantly what they were, but they seemed to be good and I loved how they were there for Elle, accepting her, being kind.

The house was fun, especially with how things worked. How it seems dark from outside but light inside. How a certain person couldn’t go to the house. How the time/temperatures/seasons would change. And more.

I also liked Elle, she was fun and I loved that she wasn’t thrown off when things started to get scarier. I loved that she was determined to figure out what was going on. Go Elle!

It was also great fun to read about this little town and see some of the people who lived there. The sisters at the post office? Would have loved to meet them in real life. They seem so friendly and fun to be around.

But I just wasn’t such a big fan of the multiple characters. I really liked Elle. But then it would switch over to Harrison, Evan, or someone else. It just confuddled me and I think I would have rather had just one POV. Just follow Elle and her time in the manor.

The love triangle. Those who know me know that I generally HATE them. I wasn’t a fan how Elle went for Evan first, even having him over for the night and almost kissing him, and then the next day kissing Harrison with a lot of love. I am glad that she decided on who to go for, but yeah, it just wasn’t my thing. Plus, it distracted from the story.

While I did love how things were resolved with the ghosts? I did feel a bit rushed. A bit boom done. I had just hoped for a bit more excitement.

The ending. On the one hand it was a pretty nice and big twist.. on the other hand, what the actual fuck? I am so confused at this point. What happened? How? Why? Did I miss something? But just a bit ago it was x? And now it is y? That definitely made my rating go down even more.

At times there were some errors in the text. Words missing or just sentences being a bit weird.

All in all, despite some things that weren’t working out for me, I am happy I read this book. Happy I found it. It had its good moments.

Well, this was very much on par with the sort of quality one finds at the bottom of the barrel of random kindle freebies. It was short enough to check out, but in retrospect certainly not worth the time, no matter how quickly it read.
A haunted writing retreat isn’t all that fresh or exciting, so the author (to her credit) did have the right idea to put an neat original spin on it with that art imitating life imitating art thing.
The art in question being writing since the protagonist is a writer. Not a very good one, presumably, or maybe that’s just the way she is written…ah, see what I did there?
Anyway, this protagonist, so pretty, with HUGE blue eyes (like, really, is she a freaking anime?) and blonde, and all the man around the manor immediately begin to throw themselves at her feet. And they are all either handsome or cute and this is mentioned with exhaustive frequency.
Actually, most things here are mentioned with exhaustive frequency that often accompanies amateurish writing, like stiltedness of narrative, wooden characterizations, etc.
So anyway, once upon a time some murders occurred in the manor and the tragedy haunts the place since but now that the giggling blonde is here (yes, readers, she giggles, A LOT) the manor just wants to love her and tell her all her secrets.
All that and a bag of laughably silly and processed cheesy romance and there you have it.
It is readable a such, does appear to have been professionally edited and does go by quickly, but that’s about all the things you can put in a Pro column here. Pass. Thanks Netgalley.

Enjoyed it!

I won this book from the Goodreads giveaway. I enjoyed it. It is a very short read. It's only 86 pages. Lol. I wish it was so much longer. But nonetheless I did enjoy it.

Mitchell Manor gives us two stories. One in 1843 and the other in 2022. In 1843 a family is murdered, one man disappears and the rumors all say that the man who disappeared murdered his family and the servants. But are the rumors true? Why did this man kill his family? Or did he?

In 2022 Elle Lewis a writer was looking for a nice quiet place to write her next book when she lucked up finding the Mitchell Manor. The Mitchell Manor is set in a secluded area with a small town nearby. No one to bother her for miles.

Everything is going great until the manor comes alive. When Elle arrives there are servants waiting for her. No one mentioned there would be servants. The whole place seemed to come alive when Elle stepped inside its gates.

Strange things start to happen. The servants appear out of nowhere as if they can read her mind as all of her wants and needs are taken care of almost immediately.

After talking to some of the people who live in the nearby town Elle starts to wonder about all the things that are going on at Mitchell Manor. Is she losing her mind? Is any of it real? Are the servants real?

What really happened all those years ago on the night a man murdered his family? Was Elle brought here by the manor itself? If so what does the manor what with Elle?

Mitchell Manor was a short read but it packed a big punch. Mitchell Manor may have been a short read but it had a full-length novel between its pages. Mitchell Manor was unique in its own way. It had some of the most incredible characters. The description was so well written it made the story magical.

Mitchell Manor was filled with mystery and suspense that kept me hanging on page after page. It grabbed my attention from the very beginning and never let go, not even after the last page was read. It still fills my mind as I sit here writing my review. I can still see it playing out in my head as if watching a movie.

I would like to read more books about Elle and all her adventures visiting haunted manors. Mitchell Manor is or would be a great start to a whole new world.

I highly recommend Mitchell Manor to anyone who loves a good ghost story. You know Halloween is coming up and I believe that Mitchell Manor would be a great starter book for the season! So grab your copy of Mitchell Manor today but be prepared to be spooked!

Thank you so much to NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary digital ARC for Mitchell Manor. The honest opinions expressed in this review are my own.

The Mitchells were one of the most affluent families in the area. However, in 1843, Theodore Mitchell’s family and household staff were found murdered.

Soon after, Theodore disappears. People believe he committed the crime. What would cause a calm, charming individual to completely snap and kill his family?

100 years later, Elle Lewis is a writer looking for inspiration. She rents Mitchell Manor in hopes of writing her next book. When she arrives at the manor, weird events start to occur. She tries to ignore what’s happening, but things escalate to the point she can’t ignore them any longer. She decides to research exactly what happened the night of the murders 100 years ago. Will she be able to solve the case before something happens to her?

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was a short and easy story. I don’t think there was a lot of character development compared to longer stories. The two guys seemed to act the same. But it was definitely a surprise ending. I love ghost stories and haunted houses.

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys short ghost stories!

*Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.*

A haunted house story just in time for Spooky season- sign me up! I was really excited to jump into this book. I wouldn't really call it a novel though, it's more of a short story- as I was able to read it pretty much in one sitting.

The premise of this book had a lot of promise. A creepy house where strange things keep happening. 2 studly love interests. A town and families with secrets. An unsolved mystery...and more. But, I felt like this book really fell short. The ideas were there, the setup was good. But, it felt incomplete. Like this was the outline for a book that hasn't been written yet. There were plot holes, and not enough character development. There were things left unexplained- and there wasn't enough information to make any of the characters relatable. I wanted to love this story- and I think it has a lot of potential. But, there just wasn't enough there for me to say much about. I'd like to see what else this author can do- because the setup for this novella was excellent. I think it could have been really creepy and the characters would have been likeable had we had a little more information...

I do enjoy some haunted house stories set in small towns, or near them, with some creepy history. I feel like the story started really strong, and I loved so many elements of the beginning.

Elle Lewis, a writer, rents Mitchell Manor to get away for some alone time and inspiration as she works on her next book. There are some weird occurrences, of course, as soon as she arrives. Nothing too drastic, but things begin to get more problematic as the days pass. Of course, she goes in to town to meet the locals (that always adds more questions).

Backstory … we need to know why there are ghosties …. She turns to locals and some snooping to discover the home’s history. In 1843, the successful & well liked, Theodore Mitchell’s family and his whole staff were found murdered at their home, Mitchell Manor. Mitchell himself wasn’t found, but was assumed guilty of the incident.

This was a short and easy read. I think I actually expected a lot more action and spook. I loved the beginning, but think the later part need some work to hold interest and add to the overall haunt atmosphere.

I was provided a complementary digital ARC copy of Mitchell Manor for review purposes. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

2&1/2 stars.... I won this book through a Good Reads giveaway. This slightly creepy story is a duel time line novella that falls within the dates, 1843 and 2022. Elle is a writer wanting to write a book. Elle thinks leaving the city will help her focus so, she rents Mitchell Manor. It is a large house that Elle is surprised is available for her little writing retreat. This novella starts to look like a ghost story. The house comes to life with an evil spirit, a mystery, ghosts or are they they "the help" and lots of strange happenings. ( That isn't a spoiler. It is from the summary.) I thought the novella is ok. It is trying hard to be a scary story but it never got scary for me. My only big negative is that I do not like the ending. I understand what is happening to Elle but the author gives us nothing that helps us figure out the why or the how?! I enjoyed the dual time line and the paranormal aspects. If you are looking to dip your toe into a scary story, then I think this is a good one.

In 1843 a family is murdered. The man who they said had killed his family and servants disappeared, never to be heard from again.

in 2022, Elle Lewis, a writer, rents Mitchell Manor to have a place to finish her next book. Mitchell Manor is in a small town so it is a quiet place for her to accomplish this task.

Upon arrival, there are servants there of which she knew nothing about. A butler and a cook, she thinks that this is pretty cool. As she settles into her new home, strange things start to happen. The servants can tell what she wants even before she does.

The back story to the haunting of this house is that in 1843, Theodore Mitchell murdered his family and servants, or did he? He disappeared and was never found. Elle is intrigued by the story and starts researching the family. She questions people in town and finds that she feels responsible to find out what happened to the family.

What she finds has disturbing consequences.

Mitchell Manor is a short read, only 86 pages but I felt that it was written surprisingly well. A story that had me turning the pages in one sitting. I love a good ghost story and this one did not disappoint. Kind of a sad story also. The fate of one family rested in one person's hands and that person was not a good person.

I give this book a 5-star rating.

I received a copy of the book for review purposes only.

In 1943, the Michell Manor becomes a horrific crime scene when the family and the staff are all found murdered. Theodore the lone survivor goes missing and is then condemned for this crime. Years later, Elle is a writer, she discovers the history of this manor and decides to stay there for inspiration. Soon after she takes up residence there, strange and unexplained events occur. Elle is soon discovers the terrifying secrets of the manor. A short ghost story with an entertaining plot and strong characters. The book is a short read, but it gives the reader enough information in a short amount of time to keep the reader engaged. A great ghost story.

Review of
Michell Manor
by S.R. Leinbeck

Michell Manor surprised me. In the beginning, I thought that it was possible that I would not enjoy the story. However, I was very wrong. This Author has created a ghost story for the ages. I will not give you any spoilers, but the end will knock you for a loop. If you like a good ghost story, read this one; you may wonder if what you’re experiencing at this moment is real.

My favorite passage was: “Some people, like in her case, go back to a time that was most significant to them.”

This read like a very elaborate fireside ghost story, but that's where the fun ended. The story itself was disjointed and didn't always make sense. The writing was very basic and didn't leave much to the imagination- everything was spelled out for the reader. I'm not quite sure I understand what happened in the end, either.

This was an ok, fast read. I'm not really a novella fan but I love a good ghost story so I was thrilled with the ARC. What fell flat for me was the two main characters being almost identical and underdeveloped. Perhaps if it were longer, the author would have been able to flesh them out a bit more

I’m on the fence with this one. It was a super fast read but I think it could have benefited from being a little longer. Maybe it’s just me but I wanted more from the characters. That being said I think this author has great storytelling skills. I will definitely check out more.

This book is full of everything I look for in an October read: haunted house, mysterious happenings, a murder/disappearance to solve, and a little romance thrown in for good measure. I wish this story had been full length to really dig deeper on the characters and then plot elements. Most books have too much exposition, this novella didn't have quite enough for me.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advanced read copy.
