Kadrixan Mates #1

A Monster's Treasure

Rate this book
CLARA
Unfairly convicted of a crime, I’m sent to serve the Kadrixan males for their rutting season.

The Kadrixans. Even their name inspires terror. Fiery-skinned and devil-like, they stand head and shoulders taller than any human man. Our colony made a terrible bargain with these monsters. The Kadrixans give us precious ore in exchange for the one thing they need.

Women. Like me.

When we meet our Kadrixan captors, I come face to face with a massive, brawny beast who claims I belong to him.
And not just for the rutting season. He wants me forever.

KRXARE
I never expected to claim a human mate, but one look at the curvy female and I know she’s mine.

Hunger claws at my mind and that of every other warrior in my regiment. All of us are on the brink of the rut which makes us more belligerent with each passing day. Without females, we’ll tear each other apart with rage.

We depend upon our bargain. Human females for Kadrixan ore.

The females arrive and there is one who stirs my primitive desire: Clara. She thinks I’m a monster; I see it in her eyes and scent it in her fear. She vows to return to her people after the rut is over, but I vow to claim my mate, to woo her and prove she’s mine.

Moral of the story is don't let midnight-me aimlessly scroll through KU looking for horny alien books. That can wait until the morning like any other respectable task.

Not enough kissing. Like, for a book description that states she's being sent to the demon-aliens to assist with their rut... I just wanted more rutting?

And there was so much non-couple related drama that felt super rushed. The dystopian colony concept had potential but it was just too much all at once.

A Monster's Treasure was a sweet bit of escapism with a devoted demon-looking alien (complete with a tail ;)) and a mostly open-minded human lady. The H is the leader of the alien males and immediately knows the h is his mate so sets about winning her over. The setting is another planet and complete with a corrupt government subjugating the poor, but even the "harder" moments didn't feel harsh. I really love these alien cultures where making the females happy is a priority and it's esp great here where the women who chose to come to the alien males are looked down upon by their society while they're getting treated well and living it up finally. No ow/om drama, neither were virgins (not sure about timing of history and only vague mentions of the H's past and he'd never attempted to woo a lady before), H has bc until it's reversed.

It's a bit of a slow burn even though the women are brought to the aliens in order to help them through their rut (with the aliens hoping they'll find some mates), but it does get steamy. There's also a side of suspense/danger and eventually a plot line to subvert the human government, but overall a lighter read that wasn't particularly deep but still enjoyable. Multiple side characters introduced, some who'll probably get their own books and others I imagine will remain in supporting roles. A brief epilogue jumped forward a few years with them being cute in their HEA but sadly not a very long one (likely to not spoil the rest of the books in the series). While there's nothing wrong with this author's writing style or books, and I really do enjoy the besotted heroes she tends to write from what I've seen, I don't really sink into her stories for some reason.

Crime and punishment!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 🖤💙🩷💚
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏🌍
Character development: 🙂🙁😋🥰
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Clara - she was arrested because it was illegal to be homeless in her city, and she was evicted from her apartment. In Nova Vita, it wasn’t just illegal to be homeless, basically it was illegal to be poor. Her cellmate was in because she missed three payments on a medical bill. There are two options for them, disappear into the colony’s Utopia project or being given to an alien that looks like an old earth demon for their rut. The Kadrixan’s give the colony the ore they need in exchange for female prisoners during their rut.

The Hero: Krxare - he waited for this year's females in a shuttle from Nova Vita. He is a commander, he and all the males under his command were about to go into rut. They were all exiled from their own solar system and the warriors had made a home on Vokira. They lost a bunch of warriors to the first rut on the planet, and they found the colony of humans on Nova Vita in time for the next rut. The first year of the treaty, the females were sure they were being sent to their death, there were only four dozen females which wasn’t nearly enough, and nine had found their mates. Some had formed triads.

The Story: Krxare was not happy to see that there were not enough females once again. He knew the humans thought of them at demons. The females were all sedated and dressed in a fancy gown. Krxare had no idea why, since they only came from the colony across the ocean, not from space. When one of the females woke and looked at Krxare, he was immediately attracted to her. When their eyes met, his knees felt weak.

The book was fairly good, there were some pretty steamy scenes, and the world building was terrific. There was a lot of description of what happened during the rut in general and in some past rutting seasons. The relationship between the two main characters was built up nicely and I liked the dilemma that Clara had. She was treated so well by Krxare and his people, she was given plenty of food and clothing and everything she needed, which she didn’t always have access to at home because she was so poor and the wealthy control everything and treat the poor so terribly, but staying wasn’t easy either because she had a brother at home.

One thing I thought was really awesome was when Krxare said that females of his race couldn’t conceive without orgasms. Just think how well controlled our population growth would be on Earth if that was the case. I was divorced with two kids and in my thirties before I had my first. I know from the men I have dated since that most are not like the ones we read about in romance novels, and could care less if the woman finishes or not.

This audiobook was told in dual points of view and narrated in dual narration by Wen Ross and Kai Kennicott. Both of these narrators are good; they have nice voices and are expressive. Definitely voice actors, not just readers, which is a must as far as I am concerned. Wen Ross has a nice, deep voice that I really liked. I definitely would listen to more from both of these narrators.

I really liked this one. I know the title is "A Monster's Treasure", but I didn't once think of Krxare as a Monster. He was a hero more than anything. Granted, his appearance would be intimidating to anyone at first. I mean, his race is huge with red skin, horns, sharp teeth and wings. It didn't help that rumor's (propaganda) at the human settlement weren't favorable towards the Kadrixan's

Krxare knew Clara was his mate from the first moment he meets her. He sets out to win her over and prepare his nest. The rut is coming, and he wants to woo her as much as possible before that happens. He was a wonderful hero and so attentive to Clara. I liked Clara as well. At first, she is hesitant, yet drawn to Krxare. It doesn't take her long to see that he has good intentions toward her. But will it be enough for her to stay? You'll have to read the book to find out.

A Monster's Treasure is a great start to the Kadrixan Mates series. I would recommend it to fans of Sci Fi romance. It's interesting, sexy and endearing. I look forward to the next book.

3.5⭐️ Reading this definitely felt like I was missing something like a previous series or a prequel. The gaps were filled in pretty well, but it made the story move pretty slowly. I liked the world and everything. Krxare was really sweet. The romance felt a bit flat overall though.

I think this would be a good read if you're new to spicy monster stories. It's a quick read, fairly cute, and Krxare is over the top sweet to Clara.
That said, though, for me, it all just felt a little cringey. Also, the cover makes no sense because Clara is a plus-size girl, but the cover doesn't depict that. I know that's nit-picky, but it is weird to me seeing her size is talked about several times in the story.
Overall, it's an okay read. I don't think I'll be picking up the next book, though.

An entertaining alien romance. Clara lives on a distant planet in an Earth colony that has a treaty with aliens who live across the sea. A treaty established an agreement to send willing women to the aliens for their annual rut.

After losing her job for mentioning something less than positive about the colony, Clara then loses her home for not having sufficient credits. She is given the choice of going to the Utopian colony which is just too perfect to be safe or across the sea to the aliens.

The aliens at least allow Women’s who aren’t happy to return to their home colony compared to people just vanishing after going to the Utopian colony. When Clara wakes up in the transport, a huge alien male has dropped to his knees in front of her and claimed her as his mate. In the days leading up to the rut, Clara gets the chance to get to know the male who has claimed her as his mate. She finds him attractive in a demon-kind of way, and finds him exceptionally protective and caring towards her making her feel safe for the first time in a long time.

While Clara and Krxare come from very different backgrounds they are well suited for each other. Once the rut takes over Krxare, the chemistry between them ignites. Feelings definitely grow between them and Clara is concerned if they are true feelings or a result of the pheromones Krxare emits whenever he touches or is close to Clara.

Clara wants to stay with her alien mate at the end of the rut, but she is exceptionally concerned about her brother who is still back on her home colony. Clara pulls a typical romance heroine stunt and tries to solve a problem without discussing it with her mate and actually uses subterfuge to deceive him about her intentions to return to her home colony.

Lack of communication or misunderstandings are so much a part of romance novels anymore, readers just seem to wait for it to happen and hope the resulting separation is short and quickly resolved! In this case, the separation is fairly short and is the cause of some action as Krxare comes to the rescue of his mate.

This was a fab series opener! This story takes place on a planet that has indigenous peoples but it also has a colony of humans and also of Kadrixan warriors. Society for the humans was very 2 tiered and not low-income friendly. Enter Clara being arrested for losing her job. She opted to service the Kadrixan warriors during their annual rut as her punishment. Krxare, the leader of his band of exiled warriors felt the mating urge for Clara and then the fun began ;) Mating pheromones really help a warrior woo his mate - and so do the sexy times as they see that as the best opportunity to prove their worth, along with the quality of their nest, to win their mate. Clara was not immune to his charms or his pheromones. Lol! We get suspense, drama and danger to go with all the cuteness, humour and steam, making this a one-sit read for me. I really enjoyed how their story unfolded and I can't wait for more gals and warriors to get their HEA ;D

Ok read, the hero was sweet but I couldn't connect with the characters.
Clara lives in an oppressive colony and is jailed for something really unfair and they offer her to go to the "rut" or a shady project called Utopia. She chooses the aliens and there she mets her mate.
The women get to date the aliens and are treated very well.
Some chapters could have had more details, some things were skimmed over, not a fan of that.

Plot: ⭐⭐
Romance: 💗💗
Spiciness: 🔥🔥
Action: 💥
Angst: 😞
Hea: Yes.

He is exiled from his planet. She is punished by her colony to choose between disappearing into "Utopia" or being sent to rut with demon aliens. And a quick decision made by the unease of the guards watching her brings her to the best decision of her life. Finding her mate, but her happiness is in danger when she's forced to leave the safety of the stronghold when her brother goes missing.
This is a must read monster romance! It's sweet, spicy, and a well thought out plot. Go forth and read. (5* review, but I already rated on my main account)

Can I volunteer for the next rut?

Krxare and Clara are very cute together. I really like the Kadrixans. The male’s sound very hunky, and who wouldn’t want a hunky male that wanted to look after his female? Pick me! Pick me! I volunteer as tribute to go for the next rut! 🥰 I DEFINITELY recommend this book. It was a very interesting read and the world described was so beautiful. And the creatures very interesting. Can’t wait for book 2.

Communicate, communicate, communicate!

Some of the plot is a little water down and oversimplified. It felt like the author wanted to keep any of the darker notes of life out of the book even though their society is a pretty harsh dystopia. as in many romance novels, a lot of the plot is driven by a failure to communicate. The heroine in the novel makes a lot of mistakes simply because the hero didn’t bothered to communicate anything to her.

Really good

I enjoyed this alien romance with Zrexare and Clara. Nice world building for a book one. Quite steamy. He's quite a cream puff sweety with her, and she's got just a touch of a rebellious streak. Very good, fairly quick read, a touch of action, leaves you with a feel good ending. Great start to a new series! Highly recommend.

It just wasn’t great. Also, I kind of hate when characters kiss and suddenly none of their problems matter anymore. Because of this magical mouth and d!ck! I will give it an extra star for good grammar. I also really liked the premise. I’m not sure if the author fleshes that out in later books, but I sure hope so, because it’s a decent plot. Alas, I will never know because I’m not reading the next one.

This was such a quick read! I felt immersed in the world; I was completely invested in the romance between Clara and Krxare, and I enjoyed the side characters. The only thing that I wanted more of was details. I think more development on the world and relationship would’ve taken the story to the next level!

Wildly hilarious, seductive, & feelgood

I giggled, cheesed, & blushed my way through this entire book. It was so incredible that after initially reading it in KU, I went ahead and purchased my own copy. That honestly says more than anything else I could tell you. Try the sample, I guarantee you'll be hooked too.

QUICK LOOK: (👹+👰=🌋🖤😂)

*hilarious culture clashes & sarcasm
*fiercely seductive romance & steam
*epic worldbuilding & adventure
*fighting & action
*adorable animals & their antics
*A growly monster w/wings
*A feisty & smart female
*all the feel-goods & consent
*once a year rut
* satisfying HEA

DETAILED LOOK:
The "demon monsters" in this book: come in shades of red, have huge & deadly wings, horns, multiple claws, a long & agile devil tail, a split tongue, they exude pheromones, go into a rut once a year, and many more goodies I'm not allowed to say🌋😁.

The Kadrixans were exiled from their home planet of Kadri by the Empress, for refusing to mow down innocents in the name of politics and greed.

Commander Krxare doesn't regret the orders he gave, it was the right thing to do. But he does feel guilty that his warriors were punished along with him. Never to see their home planet again. Nor the extravagant aeries they'd painstakingly built over the years to acquire a mate.

Worse, they had no females to get them through their yearly rut. The rut was normally a joyous event to find mates or have offspring. But it was a death sentence to an exiled Kadrixan, for without females to ease their rut, they'd go into an unstoppable rage.

Luckily they had stolen enough supplies and ships to find a new home. A bountiful new planet called Vokira, that was wild and mostly unclaimed. There were a few native tribes spread over the land and one large human colony.

Even so, the Kadrixans had lost quite a few warriors to the rut that first year. Now they traded valuable resources in exchange for willing human women from the colony.

The human colony is dealing with a lot of inequality and political machinations as well.

A bunch of human women have to choose between participating in the rut or going to the new Utopia project. Since no human has ever came back from the Utopia project, quite a few women actually choose the rut. Including an artist that was fired and evicted from her home for a negative comment she made about the colony.

When Clara arrives at the Kadrixan compound, commander Krxare shocks everyone by falling to his knees. That only happens when in the presence of a mate. This is their story & they're gonna have to work for it.

Clara has a brother back at the colony and he's in some trouble of his own. When he goes missing a much bigger conspiracy unfolds & it keeps getting better as you wade in.

Along the way, we get to know the individual warriors and humans (their interactions are comedic gold).

It's told in dual POV, where there's dedicated chapters to each character, so we get both sides without confusion.

We are taken on an adventure through the native tribes, the deceptive human colony, and the new home of the Kradixians (including their compound). We get to see their cultures, cuisines, animals and much more. There is a main plot and several side ones. The romance and steam is weaved throughout, never sacrificing the plot.

Each book features a new couple and their complete HEA but also has overarching storylines.

MY OPINIONS:
My favorite part about this book was how it made me feel. I laughed until I cried, felt my heart melt, and walked away ecstatic.

Seeing gruff monsters cherish vulnerable things like animals, their environment, and a mate is everything.

Not everything is sweet, these are warriors after all. But the fighting and growling is done to perfection, whether it's a real fight against an enemy or a teasing/dominant one with a mate.

In a couple of scenes I blushed & looked around guiltily before remembering I was an adult an could read whatever I wanted lol. Def hot and enthralling content. It hit me right in the gut. Not just the love scenes and dirty talk. Seeing the couple fight for their love, to know and understand someone so different from themself. Gah magic and bliss.

There's a ton of relatable scenes in the book involving humor and sarcasm. I wanted to be a part of their friend group. And the pet companions were the cutest little things I've ever heard of- they had the warriors wrapped around their fingers lol.

If I had to compare this book with one I've read before I'd say:

*Ruby Dixon's Mathiras
               OR
*Regine Abel's I Married A Naga

Absolutely incredible book, I wholeheartedly recommend, & cannot wait for the next one in the series. Happy reading fellow romance lovers!

I started this one today.

Currently 70% ish. It's not terrible.

It is quite soft, happens easily, no angst or action really happening. Hero was sweet, idea was promising but, it was just Meh.

I already know the ending without evening having read it yet. But I'll finish it cause I'm sick of DNF'ing books. This one doesn't deserve that.

Ok read, but my notes will tell you why I gave it only 2 stars.
Below are some of the notes I wrote down while reading the book, I had many more questions while reading it but got tired of writing them down. Warning, there will most likely be spoilers.

Notes:

I was not a small woman either. I had more than a few pounds to lose, according to my last tax check-up. According to the scale, I’d crossed the line from overweight to obese. (Okay so who is the woman on the cover then?)

I closed my eyes, and hummed a yes.
....
He continued playing with my hair, and I closed my eyes.
(There are two paragraphs between these two. She already had her eyes closed and hadn't opened them again.)

“I thought you might like an after-dinner walk to get some fresh mountain air.” I took her tiny hand in mine as we walked. (Wasn't she a bit drunk a moment ago? It seemed quickly forgotten.)

At the top, I leaned against a boulder and pulled her slightly panting body between my legs. (This could have been phrased differently. It sounds like something else out of context, even with context, and I'm not sure what the purpose was here.)

I realized she’d nodded off to sleep in my arms. (Standing?)
...
but it was good enough, especially when my mate was standing so close we practically overlapped. (This is a few pages back. So are they sitting or standing?)

Chapter 12 (hmmph... I had hoped the brother had been taken to the other camp thing and when she found out there would be a rescue mission. That would have been fun.)

(At least it sounds like a true brother and sister relationship)

Our visit to the Vokiren had been going swimmingly—the tribe was delighted at seeing Clara wearing their fabrics (So we only get the meeting explained? Couldn't we be present for it?)

I wanted to lick him up. I couldn’t stop myself. I licked him. Mmm. He was yummy. So masculine and virile. (Ew... no... what is it with these women? I have never desired to lick sweat and musk of any man.. ew... stop it!!!)

Why did everyone assume I planned on staying? No matter. I took her hand politely and repeated the formal greeting I’d learned when I first arrived, which they used to say goodbye as well. (What greeting? We have not heard of this before now and I still don't know what it is.)

“I don't recognize you. You must be new here. That means whoever claimed you as his mate never brought you up to his aerie. (Drnak not regonising her is bullshit, it must have come out that she is Krxares mate and have seen them together fx in the dining hall...)

“It's the rut. The heat is on them already. I thought we had a few more days.” (by the way, what are they going to do now there are so few women to fuck so many males?)

He tilted his head to meet me halfway, and just as every time before, his touch turned my knees to jelly. Luckily, I was already in the air and had no need to stand. (Yeah but you have to hold tight...)

The translator told me that she wasn’t looking for a place to bathe but rather a place to do her natural business. (What???)

“Hot spring?” she asked, her eyes wide. “There is one nearby. I’ll need to fly us there.” (where did his irritation and hunger go? Wasn't it only a couple of hours he could stay calm before getting all fuzzy again?)

I found a ledge and sat down, bringing her into my lap. The mineral-rich water was buoyant, and she floated back up to the surface with a laugh. She turned her body to face me and planted a loud kiss on my lips. “Thanks for bringing me here. It’s wonderful. This whole mountain is full of wonders. I can’t believe I could’ve spent my entire life not experiencing it.” I collected her floating body back into my lap and locked her in place with my arms. (So she's on his lap? Then suddenly out of nowhere in the water... then under the water, then back up again and now he's placing her on his lap again??? I'm not following what quite happened... she must be a witch suddenly disappearing from his lap out of thin air..)

She looked up at me through dark lashes. “When I first decided to come here, I was sure I’d leave at the end of the rut, but now I’m not so sure.” I recalled her talk with her brother. I hadn’t meant to eavesdrop, but my hearing was good, (hey hey.... shouldn't he be elated that she is reconsidering the whole staying thing... before thinking of other things???)

She blew out a breath, her face halfway under the water so that bubbles rose to the surface. (SO NOW SHE'S IN THE WATER AGAIN!!!!!!! WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN!!!!)

No. This couldn't be. Residents of the colony didn't just change their contact numbers. Our contact numbers were ours to keep for life. They were linked to the chips installed into our arms as children; our contact number was a part of us. The only time it was given to someone else was when—I didn't allow myself to finish the thought. (I don't understand, so the chip rings when someone calls?)

Especially if he had no illnesses or financial problems. It's not like on Earth, where people died in traffic accidents. (Hmm... so there are no accidents at all? What about Clara's parents? They died in an accident..)

It hit me like a blaster shot to the chest and I stumbled back. When I approached her, she did not shy from me. (He had to stumble back to reach her or did he walk to her?)

We held our wrists close together, and soon, she had enough to get to her mom’s place and pick up some groceries if she needed them. (And how do they see the amount of money they have or sent to others? They needed a scanner earlier. Remember?)

“Who the fuck is knocking at one in the fucking morning? I have work in the morning.” Mark pulled open the door angrily. ( they missed the last train because it was in the middle of the night, and she still got home to Mark at one in the morning? Whaaaat?)

Mark put something down on the table. It took me a moment to realize it was a phone, Chris’s phone. It had a strange, oversized case on it that reminded me of the box Mark had put his devices in. (Mark just threw laptops and mobile and other devices away to make sure they weren't being listened to, and now he pulls out another phone??)

“If she returns." (Woops, wrong quotation mark.)

Vostak erupted in laughter, and this time I almost got out of the cocoon I’d made for myself to show his face my fist. (What cocoon? It's the first time I hear about it.)

“Holy shit, Clara. I thought that was the end,” Chris said, climbing off his own hover bike. (Wasn't there only one?) Page 166: He was shocked to see us and equally shocked when we offered to buy the old hover bike. (Oh yeah.. only one.)

Chris narrowed his eyes at me. “You must be Krxare.” “I am.” (how could he guess that? He has never seen him.)

Tall and Skinny’s eyes looked ready to pop out of his head.("their heads" there's more than one.)

Page 185. (Didn't he have armour on? It can't be pleasurable to be rubbed against.)

I was still shocked that I’d actually saved my brother. (Um.. not alone.. don't forget.)

It had taken the two human males only several days to convince (it doesn't make sense to put "only" in front of "several". "Several" gives you a feel of it being more than two days, and "only" is used when it is a short period of time.

(I would have wished the kukees would have had a bigger influence on the book and not just some useless fillers.)

GREAT WORLD BUILDING: In this SciFi Romance the aliens appear monstrous to the humans, hence the use of “Monster” in the title. The fierce, warrior aliens in this world look demonic. They’re red skinned with horns, black, leathery wings and their knees are backward. Their bare feet end in giant, black claws. What’s interesting about this story is that neither the humans nor the red skinned Kadrixan’s are native to the planet, Vokira. The humans have been on the planet for around three generations whereas the Kadrixan’s have only been there for about 20 years. Funnily enough, only the Kadrixan’s made nice with the intelligent indigenous peoples whereas the human have alienated them. Apparently even in the future the human race is still ignorant and wasteful. I’m wondering if in future installments of the series we will see war. I’d like for the Kadrixan’s to put the smack down on the humans for how they’re living. The human government is up to some shady 💩

COVER COMMENTS: Clara is a BBW. The woman on the cover is not. This cover was clearly designed specifically for this book so I would expect it to more accurately represent the FMC.

Writen by Lynnea Lee, The Kadrixan Mate series takes place on a planet called Vokira, which was settled by humans from Earth and Kadrixans from Kadri. The humans lived on one continent, inside a settlement called Nova Vita (and created a new settlement called Utopia, but those who went there were never heard from again) and the Kadrixans lived across the ocean on their own continent. There were also tribes of natives spread out called Vokirens. All of Vokira’s inhabitants traded among one another respectfully, staying out of each other’s way. Nova Vita was set up like hunger games, in the sense that the wealthy lived in the center and thrived whereas the poor lived on the outskirts and were over taxed and underfed. It was super easy to get arrested, where the poor humans would be forced to choose between going to Utopia (where they never came back), or to the Kadrixans during their rut (and possibly come back). Kadrixans traded the human colony for females, which were sexually compatible, to slake their rut, which was a short span in the spring where the devils HAD to fuck. I say “devils” because that is exactly what they look like; red skin, horns, tails, dark wings, etc. They also emit pheromones which sooth and arouse their females, among other things.

Written in first person, A Monster’s Treasure is book 1 in this series, and follows Kadrixan Krxare and his human mate Clara. Clara‘s job had taken her into the higher class area of the colony, where she discovered that the groceries were cheaper than in the poorer word district where she lived. She showed proof of her findings to her coworker, who then turned her into the authorities for speaking ill of the colony, which was against the law. Clara had suspected that the system was setting them up for failure, but unfortunately, there was nothing anyone could do about it. After getting fired, Claire was unable to find another job, and was struggling even more to get by. Starving, unemployed, and now branded a criminal, Clara was arrested and given a choice between going to Utopia or assisting the Kadrixans with their rut. She chose the rut. Krxare was the leader of the Kadrixan colony, whose mate bond sparked upon first contact with Clara.

Most of the book was Clara discovering that the Kadrixans weren’t that bad, and were actually thriving compared to her malnutrition life at Nova Vita, while falling in love with her devil alien warrior. She wound up leaving temporarily in order to save her brother and his roommate from a Utopian fate, but every thing worked out in the end.

The cartoon cover of this book had me putting off reading this series for a long time. While I know it’s never good to judge a book by its cover, it very much kept me from reading this book sooner. I can’t necessarily say this book was good or bad, just different. I found a some parts extremely boring, and wound up speed reading my way through the lulls. I enjoyed the alien devil aspect, and the romance scenes were fire once they actually came into play. For a species that is based on rutting (fucking), it sure took a long-ass time for the actual rut to take place. Which was chapter 17, the 59% mark. I still recommend this read, if this kind of romance novel is up your alley. It is for me, so I will continue with this series. Besides, I’m running out of things to read anyway. 😅

The announcement of the new series intrigued me a lot. The first two chapters published in the newsletter looked really promising. In the main role, alienen looking like demons with horns, fangs, wings and tails, who during their rut need human women to survive, because they only have two things in their minds at that time: fuck or fight. I thought it would finally be a book with dominant males and with a slightly darker and spicier feel than the Xarc'n Warriors series. Reality turned out to be different, but this did not prevent me from enjoying reading in any way.
I think the book is well written and it's a good start to the series. The world created by the author is intriguing. Humanity is depicted as a villain who has colonized a foreign planet. In order to gain the necessary land, humans killed some of the native people. Among the inhabitants of the colony, the privileged classes live in luxury. The remaining residents are exploited and harassed at every turn. They struggle to survive, trying not to get in authority bad books. Every slightest offense or criticism will end with men being sent to Utopia (a mysterious human colony from which no one returns), or for women, depending on their choice, sent to Utopia or to Kadrixan for their rutting season. Under a treaty with warriors, the government receives a generous reward for every "willing" woman. However, in order to avoid too many volunteers, the authorities spread propaganda depicting Kadrixan as demonic barbarians and Utopia as a land of happiness.
In fact, Kadrixan are honorable warriors. Even though they are aliens on this planet as well, they want to live peacefully with both natives and humans. They are possessive and protective towards their mates. They cherish women regardless of whether they are their mates or they just live in their stronghold. Since only males feel a mate bond, it is their job to convince females that they are the only ones. Despite their appearance, they are not demons at all. They are sweet but also sexy as sin.
On the other hand, I was not as impressed with heroine. Clara is a woman with a good heart, but a little too naive. In my opinion, this is an example of a typical damsel in distress, who cannot quite cope with the situation in which she finds herself and needs her prince charming. Her mission to find her brother as an attempt of the author to show Clara from the stronger side was not very credible to me.
Nevertheless, I think the book is recommendable for fans of si-fi romances with HEA and a bit of adventure. The series certainly has potential. The mysterious Utopia is particularly interesting, and I hope we'll get to know more details in the next book.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
