Never Forget Duet #1

You Never Forget Your First: And He Just Might Be the Death of Me

Rate this book
Amelia Nuñez is moving out of rock bottom. Well actually, moving out of her Upper East Side apartment after a heartbreaking year that’s/that has consisted of losing her loving mother, and now, a failed engagement.

She’s ready to pick up the pieces again, and luckily for her, she has no shortage of chosen family members to lean on. Like the group of immigrant Latino doctors and their kids who she has always referred to as her surrogate family.

Being a first generation American daughter to her Dominican immigrant parents has always held its challenges, but Amelia is about to do the most terrifying thing yet—spend the holiday season with her judgmental Latino family members as an almost thirty-year-old single woman.

But just as Amelia is gearing up to be the center of the holiday chisme, he shows up. Evan Cooper, also known as her brother’s best friend, tech mogul about to reach billionaire status, and worst of all, Amelia’s first crush. But Amelia isn’t a little girl anymore, and she can handle her own now. At least, she hopes.

Evan on the other hand, is done biding his time. He’s moved back to the city, and is ready to take what has always been his—Little Miss Amelia. But after Amelia flips the script on him and leaves him wondering if he can handle the new and emboldened Amelia, he sets a plan in motion.

All it takes is one fateful Thanksgiving weekend in the Berkshires, and maybe a little divine intervention from her Mami, but soon Amelia and Evan’s worlds are turned upside down.

Could her childhood crush be anything more than just that? Will his secret past put her in harm’s way?

They had better figure it out fast, because someone’s been watching. And now, they’re ready to come out.

And they’re not showing up empty handed.

What an incredible debut!! I loved this big hearted, dual POV, brother's best friend closed door romance. Set in New York City, the story follows Amelia who has just lost her mother to pancreatic cancer and has to deal with her grief while also figuring out what she wants in life and love.

The big Dominican American cousin crew (plus her bestie Nikki) made this story extra fun! Evan Cooper, billionaire philanthropist and Amelia's first crush was super swoony too (I'm a goner for a hero who has been secretly pining for years!). Plus there's insane chemistry, great banter, some forced proximity holiday shenanigans - basically everything you could want from a good love story.

Throw in a little telenovela drama/suspense near the end and the absolute best epilogue and this book truly kept me entertained from start to finish. It can't go without saying just how STUNNING the cover is for this book either - another amazing piece of art from Ink and Laurel! I can't wait to read what Millie writes next (hopefully a Nikki/Tony love story??)

I really loved the storyline but the pacing of the book threw me off. Evan and Amelia were super cute though.

I can’t wait for the next book!!! <3

Taylor Swift songs: “call it what you want”, “king of my heart”, “delicate”. Reputation album definitely belongs to Amelia and Evan🥰

Brother’s best friend, childhood friends to lovers, BILLIONAIRE, lots of banter and pining, he’s obsessed with her, 6’4”, Looks like Chris Evans. Need I say more?
I was so addicted to this book, I literally could not put it down. I was reading it while brushing my teeth, and washing my face, getting soap in my eyes because I couldn’t stop reading. This seriously just surpassed so many of the books I’ve read recently. It was hilarious, sweet, and ROMANTIC, LIKE HOLY CRAP!! This is one of those romances that will have you smiling and giggling as swooning as you read. But also the plot outside of romance is AMAZING. There are so many jaw dropping, heart racing plot twists, like a telenovela mixed with action/suspense movie. I’m obsessed.
I loved the Latinx family representation, this book truly felt like chisme (gossip) with the tías, in the best way possible. Think NYC giant Dominican family, mostly made up of doctors, with lots of meddling family members. All of the characters were so well rounded, lovable, and larger than life!! I loved how amazing the bond and family dynamics of blood relatives and found family is absolutely amazing. Not to mention, Amelia is a TOTAL GIRLBOSS!!!!! She is breaking out from all of the expectations that her family and outside forces have on her, and stepping into her own skin. “To put her ‘wants’ above her ‘shoulds’.” And I love when the male main character is obsessed with the female main character, and this definitely does not disappoint.
I usually don’t love dual POV of the main love interests, but in this case it worked so well, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. The entire book was so cohesive and heavily addicting that I could not get enough. This book completely surpassed and obliterated all of my expectations, how could I not give this book 5⭐️? Heck, I’d give it 6⭐️ if that were possible. (And you guys know I am SUPER HESITANT about giving books 5⭐️, I have only given 12/184 books 5⭐️). I swear on my goodreads account that you will not be disappointed by this book.
The author is seriously amazing, I would not be surprised if she rose to Emily Henry/Christina Lauren status. The writing was THAT good. Don’t hate me for saying this, but I actually enjoyed it even more than Emily Henry, even though I love her books to death. There was something so special about this book that completely sets it apart from everything on the market right now. I am so glad that I found out about this book. Millie Perez, you have a new and forever fan.

Age rating: 15+ (closed door but lots of references to it, as well as language)

*I did receive this as an Ebook Advanced reader copy, but this is a totally honest review. I will definitely be purchasing a physical copy for myself as soon as preorders open.

I’m sorry, I don’t think the “almost dying” or “someone tried to kill me” trope fits into what’s supposed to be a cozy lighthearted romance and even less if it’s in the last 10% of the book, it’s completely unnecessary in my opinion.
The rest of the book was okay and I really liked the cousins relationship, it’s so amazing how you create a family with people you don’t share blood with…

This is a perfect example of "you can't judge a book by its cover" because while the cover is great, the book is not. Honestly, I think I'm going to have to chalk most of it up to bad writing. There were other things like too quick and too short chapters, mediocre characters, boring plot, but the main thing was simply not great writing.

This is one to avoid.

This has been on my tbr for a while and I’m glad I finally read it and supported a fellow Dominican ♥️🇩🇴. I really enjoyed the beginning of this story and liked Amelia’s character. Her relationship with her family and friends was endearing and I loved seeing her grow into her own person. Evan was a great mmc and should be the blueprint for billionaire mmc’s. He was thoughtful, caring, very generous and spoiled his friends and family.

I had a lot of issues with the second half of this book. I really didn’t like it. The dialogue between characters was cringy and the writing wasn’t great. I also didn’t enjoy the “twist”/mystery subplot and found it to be very random and come out of left field. This shouldn’t be a brother’s best friend because we are just told Evan is BFFs with Amelia’s brother but no where in this book do we see an actual friendship. I’m also not a fan of having sexual tension and build up but then fade to black and be closed door…it just puts me off. Overall, I loved the representation and the potential this book had.

I really enjoyed this one. It did not feel like a debut at all. I definitely plan on reading more from this author. This was really sweet, with a couple twists and turns. I do wish it had been open door because there was A LOT of innuendo and alluding to, but still really great, overall.

THIS WAS AN AMAZING DEBUT NOVEL. You Never Forget Your First was released in the Fall of 2022. It's been on my TBR since then and I totally regret not reading this sooner.

For the most part, this is a light hearted cozy read with light spots of suspense to it. Evan and Amelia have both been secretly crushing on each other forever and as luck would have it... they end up stranded in a cabin together on Thanksgiving due to a snow storm.

I loved the characters. Evan Cooper is book boyfriend material. I fell in love with him instantly and I lowkey, already love Antonio.

Although I enjoyed the story for the romance that it was, what I REALLY want to highlight is the diversity!

Millie Perez is a Dominican author and Amelia (the FMC) and her family is Dominican. Her found family consisted of other first gen Americans, coming from Puerto Rico and Cuba. I loved all the little details that spoke about the culture. I LOVE when I see Spanish written in books, specifically romance!

I'm a romance girlie through and through and I just want to see MYSELF. I want to see my people seen and heard and represented in this genre. So anytime, I find a Spanish FMC or MC, I have to rave about it.

Yes, it was a "fade to black" book, but I absolutely thought it was worth the read.

Amelia is a first generation Dominicana and Evan is her brothers best friend. See where I’m going with this? We have best friends little sister trope! Add in forced proximity. A billionaire that looks like Chris Evans. A big Latin family. It was a great combo of a story.

I loved the family dynamics and the easy flow of the writing. Evan with Amelia was top notch romantic! He was so sweet and patient with her. The mystery element was a good twist that was building in the background and though the end felt a but rushed, it worked out.

Thank you Millie for a copy of this beautiful book!!

This book was actually really cute and entertaining. I loved the little suspense that was thrown in. This book did have a couple of issues, and I do feel like the ending was rushed.

All in all, a solid 3.5 stars for me.

This book is brilliant!
I almost couldn't believe this was the author's first book. The writing is brilliant, vivid, and so engaging. It didn't matter where I book marked, when I picked it back up I felt completly in the story and invested.
The FMC is so relatable, as she is healing from her mother's death she is finding herself as well as exploring this long crush with the MMC.
The banter they both have is amazing, I laughed, cheered people on, got mad, all the emotions.

This was an adorable read that's breathes new life into many beloved tropes. I loved watching Amelia become more confident. She was already everything and more, she just needed to own it. The family, the love, the weird twist and turns! I read it in less than 24 hours and can't wait for the next book she's writing.

I just have to say, the way I DEVOURED this book. It does second chance-ish boy has always loved girl, brother’s best friend so damn well. Millie had me crying from the first few pages and I knew I was just done for. Estaba bebiendome las lágrimas. I really wanna try not to give anything away in this review so I’ll just say as a latina it really hit home in many ways. We’re such a family centered culture, both blood related and chosen, I too have many non-blood related primos and tíos.

Amelia and Evan have my heart, so much so I read both books in the duet through KU and as soon as I finished I went over to buy physical copies. These are definitely going on my re-read stack.

Amelia Nunez is LIFE! I absolutely loved her!

I had so much fun reading this one! ( her inner talk had me on the floor LOL )

Everything about this romance novel was the definition of growing up in a Latinx family! You have the “Cousin” crew which they’re not blood related but they grow up together since their families are closed friends.

You have a devastating loss in the family and you will see Amelia deal with that and a few bad choices she made.

This is a “my first crush who happens to be my brothers best friend” type of romance and I know you will love it!

To say I am impressed is an understament! Millie Perez did a great job on her deout novel! This is one of the first books where some of my inner thoughts of being a Latina in America really came to life. Amelia is the youngest of the 'cousin crew' and is in constant battle of either not being latina enough or not being white enough. She ends up witth her brothe's bestie/ someone she's not too found of, Evan. Their banter had me legit laughing out loud The plot twist was so good but I would of loved more of a back story as it felt a little rushed and random. Other than that if you love Jane the Virgin, than this book is for you!

oh! it starts out as one thing (brother’s best friend turned romantic/sexual) and then it ends up being a completely different thing (creepy stalker?) and it is technically classified as a “holiday” book .. but hmm. the pacing is weird and not great going from 2 page chapters to 15 chapters, and the writer tended to take a “tell not show” approach to a lot of things which is not my favorite. it was sadly poorly written. but like the FMC, i also start shaking my ass when “What’s Luv” by ashanti and fat joe comes on.

Millie Perez’s debut novel was truly a love letter to her Dominican heritage and to all the young women out there who work hard to achieve their dreams. I had a smile on my face through the novel and even giggled like a school at certain moments. I loved the story that was told. The whole “Be The Death of Me” Part, was not ready for that to be the twist but the little mystery/suspense moment was welcomed. Definitely thought it amped the book up, sadly I feel like what followed felt a bit rushed and the last 20 pages felt deflated.

The Dominican and Latin representation was absolutely fantastic! I do not speak any Spanish, but seeing the language dispersed through the story was so fun and based on the context, I could figure out what was being said (a couple times I did Google Translate, but truly no big deal!). The use of Found Family in the novel was such a beautiful thing. The “Cousin Crew” all felt like super distinct characters, with their own unique voices. And seeing them rally around Amelia & her family during their time of grieving brought tears to my eyes.

A few other lovable tropes found their way in!
-Brother’s Best Friend
-Childhood Friends-to-Lovers
-Forced Proximity
-”He is so whipped for her”
-Billionaire

The biggest downfall I feel like this book had was the constant use of pop culture references. A high frequency of it can cause a book to feel a bit dated or stuck in a time capsule if you were to read it years later. The sexual tension was built up so wonderfully and the leading couple had such great chemistry, I was just a tiny bit disappointed that the spicy scenes were closed door.

Overall, I really loved my time with this book and I think it’s worth the read if you are looking for a couple that is genuinely head-over-heels, out-of-the-ballpark in love with each other and want to do good in their lives and community (& yes, they do have come CLASSIC Rom-Com moments!). If you’re looking for a great cast of supporting characters; If you are looking for the female main character to experience fantastic growth and stand up for what she wants and vocalize it loud; Give You Never Forget Your First: And He May be The Death of Me a shot!

RomComs are my thing so learning about a new indie author gave me all the butterflies. But those butterflies came with a side of pride and a whole lot of high expectations upon learning that the story is based on a Latina. Still, Millie took a “chancleta”, threw it at my expectations and said: “watch what I can do”.

This debut novel has absolutely everything we love in RomComs, with a bucket of flavor and spice only Latinas can bring.

🤍 Brother’s-best-friend troop
🤍 Amelia is the type of lead you root for, laugh with, and see a bit (or a lot) of yourself in.
🤍 Evan is a swoon worthy as it can be without seeming “too good to be true”.
🤍 Their love feels so pure and genuine it gives you goosebumps.
🤍 Amelia’s pain and struggles are things you can relate and empathize with
🤍 Light-hearted humor
🤍 A family you want to be a part of

Most of all, I’m proud to say this is the most accurate and beautiful representation of the Latino culture I’ve read in a Romance/RomCom novel. Ever.

I truly can’t wait and see what this author does next. “Siempre pa’lante, pa’trás ni pa’ coger impulso.” 😉

PS. Millie, you had me at the first “Ay, puñeta”. 😂

I enjoyed You Never Forget Your First. It was sweet, sexy, sassy and fun with a suspense undertone. However there were parts of it that I didn't really care for. I felt like the heroine was immature at times and certain things about her and the hero's relationship was a bit wonky. That said I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Dnf at 28%. The FMC comes across as just too immature. And I cannot feel the chemistry between the main characters.
I love the setting, and the big family/friends group and different dynamics within the group. Ofc the one person the FMC doesn't get along with is the same person showing interest in the MMC. Predictable.
I think this one is just not for me.

Love her other books but her debut book is not it. The love confession in the middle is just cringe and goes downhill from there. Closed door unlike her others.
