A Dark Secret
In a small Southern town where everyone knows everybody else's business, Cady Swann has managed to keep a few secrets to herself...among them, the fact that every night for the past fifteen years she's been protecting the town - probably the world - from a monstrous invasion of nether-worldly beasts. Unfortunately for Cady, someone has discovered her secret. Someone - or something - not quite human.

A Dark Desire
Obsidian is a warrior, proud and fierce. He wants Cady to join his army in the war against their common foe. He also wants her to join him in his bed, to tempt and delight her into tying her life to his and leaving her world behind...forever.

I'll just get it out of the way first. My major problem with this book is that the author used the word slurping, or some variation of the word, while describing some of the erotic scenes. I have what you may call a personal quirk, maybe more of an intense dislike or borderline phobia, with that word associated with anything remotely sexy. I probably sound like a prude (which I am not) but I counted the word 4 (?) times and every time it completely killed the scene and made me want to read faster, to get back to killing some monsters.

Essentially, Ravenous made the mistake of being too crass for me. I'll give any type of erotic fiction a chance but I dislike it when authors feel the need to be gross or base. This is not even close to the first book which has made me feel as such, but I figured it worth mentioning that I am tiring of the trait.

My only previous experience with King's writing was in the form of some of her short erotic fiction. I thought it was all a decent enough diversion so I decided to try something a bit longer, especially once I found out that Ravenous is one of those few books which belong on both my erotic and horror shelves. More books should in my opinion. Nothing gets the heart pumping like a good scare and people tend to want one last good tumble before the end of the world and all. Well, maybe not so much, but that is what fiction is for. Fear and sex, two of the most basic human reactions, adrenaline inducers, so maybe my complaints about the sex scenes being too base has just been voided. Either way, it's how I felt while reading. I probably will read more from the author, someday, maybe. Maybe not. I haven't decided. King did create an interesting shoot-off reality, with many possibilities, and I did like all of the characters, so props for that. In the end, I think the book needed more horror and less erotica.

I have had this book on my TBR mountain for some time. I know that when I read a Sherri L. King novel, I will enjoy it, and I also know that when I start a series I get obsessed with it until I finish it! I really want to give this novel 4.5 stars, but since our rating system won't allow that, I bumped it up to 5 stars.
Earth is in the middle of a confortation between the Shikar (who live below the center of the Earth) and the evil Daemons who are essentially monsters that are trying to take over the world.
The Shikar are an interesting breed of people. They are very tall, built, have irridescent eyes, strong and have a deep sense of honor, that I really admired. They protect humans from the Daemons, even though humans are unaware of their existance. They only come out at night ( sunlight gives them a horrible sunburn...but they are NOT vampires) and fight the Daemons until dawn.
Cady Swann is a human who sees and fights the Daemons. Seeing the Daemons kill her family at a young age, this has caused her to have a physic ability to sense when the evil Daemons are near, and every night she fights them. She is unaware that the Shikar have been watching and monitoring her every move. When she is asked by the Shikar for her help, she agrees to do so, but with some resistance. (she likes relying on herself).
Obsidian is the leader of the Shikar men that come out every night and fight the Daemons. Curious and intrigued by Cady, they butt heads from the beginning, but he has an instant attraction to her, and feels the need to protect and bind her to him.
The Shikar world is definately a fascinating one. I found myself becoming more and more entranced by the life they live, and the world as they see it. The other characters (the other Shikar warriors and the Traveler...he REALLY got my attention) are very likeable and I am very ANXIOUS to read their stories.
The sexual chemistry between Obsidian and Cady is smoking hot! Obsidian definately knows how to please a lady...
The only problem I had with this book is, I didn't like the way Kady talked to Obsidian sometimes. I know she is a bad-ass warrior and all, but some of the sarcastic, mean things she said to him, grated my nerves. But, maybe that is just me....
If you are offended by Strong Language and Explict Sexual Relations, this book is NOT for you.
I can't wait to read the other books!

Maybe I'll try this one out again sometime later...but it was just such crap I thought. A cocky demon-hunting woman is confronted by some arrogant otherworldly being who's been sent to recruit her to join him and his comrades, but really just seems to antagonize her every time he pays her a visit. He totally crushes her during their first encounter, then again at their second, for no real clear reason except that she pisses him off. And then she, who's got soooo much attitude, practically begs him to stop hurting her at one point and then is floored by how gorgeous he is. It was just too infantile and shoddy. For instance, the wounds she's suffering when she gets home that night--presumably, if she's been doing this for 15 years, she can't get wounded like that every night and still be alive. Yet she has a cavalier attitude about it--"they probably won't get infected." Same with how easily he deals with her. Either she's tough or she isn't. But I hate it when the author tells us one thing and shows us another. And then there's their oh-so-clever dialogue--"Fuck you," "I'm not in the mood right now." Obsidian, who's been sent to recruit her, sometimes speaks really formally, then other times is more idiomatic--it really felt like the author just couldn't give him a consistent voice. I also found the random Spanish phrases the heroine sometimes spews--I guess to give her a cultural identity--totally annoying and unnecessary.

This was an interesting read - my first Sherri L King story.

Cady Swann, self-appointed "Buffy" style character has been fighting every night for the past 15 years against monstrous invading creatures in her small town after her family was killed by them. Cady can be cocky and mouthy most times, well - all the time in fact! and reminded me of "Gina Davies in The Long Kiss Goodnight" as she is gutsy and smart-mouthed and just won't give up. Cady knows she's different to others in that she has abilities that allow her to kill these creatures that most people could not - she's fast, strong, and can track the monsters with her "spooky" talent.

After a bit night of slaying she is jumped by the Shikar Warrior Obsidian who was sent to convince her to join their side in the war against the beasts. Kind of starts off like a first date - bit of small talk, she gives him a bit of travel advice (you know - tells him to "F-Off" did I mention she has a potty-mouth?), he stabs her with his....weapon; Wolverine-style blades complete with optional poison, they have a bit of a tussle with the odd accidental but not unpleasant rubbing of body-parts, then she notices his "other" weapon, bit more small talk, and he leaves saying he'll be back....

There's a mighty lot of crotch-grinding going on to begin with between these two - (guess those "warriors" are not such a bright bunch) but it does get better once they realise that sex IS better once you take your clothes OFF.

Obsidian lives underground (and in another dimension) but it seems to be comfortable with all the modern conveniences like king size beds, sunken bathtubs and latex condoms and probably porn 'cause these guys really know how to show a girl a good time in the bedroom.

The Shikar are a race of protectors against the Horde of Daemons (aka big scary monsters that Cary kills). They have iridescent amber eyes and they all seem to be BIG gorgeous guys (obviously no Macca's down there! - these men are lean, mean, fightin' machines) who only come out at night because they cannot tolerate sunlight (I don't think they sparkle though - lol) and fight the Daemons until dawn. Not much is said about their women except that they are not warriors and do not have any special abilities.

Within this warrior race there are families (Castes) who have additional talents in the form of different abilities. Cinder (who seems to be the baby at 6'5") can generate fire at will, Edge can eject the blades from his arms like boomerangs at his enemies, and the very mysterious (and tall at 7'5") and cloaked Traveller, who would not give his name to Cady on meeting her, seems to be the guru of travel between the dimensions. I can't recall what Obsidian's "special" talent was apart from the fact he was an elite fighter and a dynamo in between the sheets.

The Traveller deserves a special mention. There is a scene (I won't give any spoilers as to his ID here) when he is looking for Cady and his character is opened up more to the reader and leaves me begging for "more information please!!!" and "who is this blonde woman that he has an arousing encounter with?" All that dark and brooding just begs for another book to be written. He just oozes a “bad boy” personality and this guy can "beam me up Scotty" any time!

The Shikar world is definitely interesting, located outside the inhospitable gates that keep out the Horde from invading the Earth. The women live in another part of the city with the married men, there was the possibility of a city tour but when Obsidian returned with Cady he was too busy “gettin’ busy”.

My only query to the storyline is regarding a conversation at the end of the story between Tryton and Grimm discussing the matter of the "other" open backdoors scattered across the surface world. Within the story it is mentioned that Cady seems to be the first human with Shikar-abilities, so if there were other backdoors wouldn't these Daemons be on prime-time news with all the human-munching they like to do? I mean - if the paparazzi can spot Lindsay Lohan exiting another rehab surely they will spot other butt-ugly beasts roaming the ‘burbs.

At present there are another 4 books but I couldn't find one that specifically delved into the traveller's story, so, if by some miracle Ms. King ever reads this - please, please, please consider writing the Traveller's story - we, you're devoted fans would love to know what happens to him.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who lovers of steamy sex scenes, fighting, more sex, some more fighting, and some more sex again with a hot horny warrior watching [fans myself - oh my!:]

First chapter, loved it! Second chapter, ummm okay . Third chapter, eye rolling began. Halfway through the book I thought, uh...yeah. I'll pass. I finished this book in such a short time because I honestly grew weary of the sex. Yes, I said that. Repetitive sex gets a little boring with me, having voyeurism is good, I am open to many, many things.

Where did I draw the line? SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT!!!!Poisonous sperm.(Insert maniacal laugh here. Possibly have the mad professor turning with an evil smirk on his face?) Yes. I said it. Poisonsous sperm. She was poisoned and it killed/mutated her. Oh and the term "purple-headed you know what."

The plot had such promise, if they wanted to retool and edit this, I would reread it without skipping parts. when you are thumbing through a book and looking for the plot you know there is too much unneccesary sex in my opinion.

Okay...this book was okay for me. The good...a snarky heroine who knocks a cocky alpha male off his high horse. She's a badass fighter who does things that the warrior class can't explain because she's a poor weak human. *snort*

Then there's the sex. Of course our badass female fighter and our alpha male warrior are drawn to each other sexually. That whole sex/violence ratio that we are all familiar with. And yes the sex is hot! Yummo!

But what killed this book for me was the emotional attachment. Every important event I stumbled across seemed to be an afterthought. Oh by the way...my semen is poisonous, oh by the way, we're mated, oh by the way you're knocked up. You're okay with that right? And I know you are a fierce independant female but now you have to give all that up, wear a sex kitten fighting costume, and live underground. You don't mind do you?

Whoa.

I think I have read a lot of really good UF/PNR and I was just expecting more story to go with the sex. There were some really good sex scenes, really good one liners, and a really good beginning to some characters. Maybe if the book was longer we would have had more of an appealing sex/plot ratio.

Still a 3 star read for me. If for nothing else than our two fighters impressive sexual skill.

Ravenous was lotsa instanta love, erotic graphic sex scenes, and gore, action-filled scenes with nasty, hideous human-eating monsters. Cady was a tough, focused heroine until, *gasp*, you guessed it, Obsidian of the Shikar, comes along. Then she is weak-kneed as any female susceptible to muscles and a pretty face. Their common cause and physical attraction brings them together until the last. Aww, well, there is the age old plot of boy-meets-girl, and girls rescues boy while fighting disgusting demons.

All in all, this was enjoyable, if a bit cliched in the warm fuzzy moments and dialogue. There is the big set-up for more books that is too obvious. Anyone who is a fan of paranormal urban erotic fiction should enjoy this one.

Cady's TSTL moment actually killed her. Which was awesome, because she deserved it. But then they brought her back to life. Which was totally cheating.

The dirty talk was nice and all, but it felt very out of place coming from somebody that says "thusly" and speaks quite formally. It's like their speech patterns changed from one page to another. But I can't really complain because I quite like dirty talk.

A bit heavy handed on explaining things that weren't really important, but I liked it well enough. I'm quite interested in Traveler's story.

In this book the author managed to produce a page-turning plot, characters you actually care about, a satisfactory ending and lots of very hot activity between the hero and heroine. [One can't use the traditional cliche about 'between the sheets' because they only managed to make it that far now and then...:] Definitely a good read.

OK, this is an Ellora's Cave publication and anyone who has ever read one of their books aught to know exactly what to expect when they see their header—almost no character development or world-building, very little plot, maybe some violence and a lot of sex. This book held to that maxim strictly. The thing is, I knew it would when I picked it up. It's erotica for god's sake. It's hardly fair to expect much more. But some straight up sexiness was about what I was looking for, so it would be a little unfair to complain about it. I'm not. But even going in with such low expectations I was still a little disappointed. I didn't hate the book, but I wasn't all that impressed either.

Honestly, when reviewing a book like this it just comes down to, 'how was the writing?' and 'were the sex scenes good?' The writing was simplistic but passable, though the dialogue often came across as really formal and stiff, no contractions and the use of for and for not, for example. The editing seemed fine and I even liked some of the characters. But the sex scenes, arguably the most important part of an erotic book, were mediocre—not horrible, just a bit 'meh,' in my opinion.

The issue was that in two or so days the main characters went from enemies, to impassioned lovers, to the use of alternate orifices with additional mechanical assistance and exhabisionism. Individually, I don't have a problem with any of this. I don't even have a problem with all of them if it fits, but here it didn't feel at all natural. It felt like every-time the author wrote another sex scene (and there are of course a lot) she felt the need to up the anti. So much so that as a reader I started thinking ahead, 'I bet she'll add X next.' And you know what? I was usually right. It made it feel so scripted that felt like I needed a erotica check list. Did we include fellatio? Check. Did we include cunillious? Check. Did we include a 69? Check. Did we include digital penetration of both the vagina and the rear sphincter? Check. Did we include anal sex? Did we include...Did we include...Oh, wait, we forgot... Eventually the novelty wears off and it loses its lustre. Does it make sense that such forced variety gets boring? I hope so, 'cause that is my main complaint here.

Cady Swann was a true bad ass.

I loved everything about the female character. She saved the world from other-worldly beasts for fifteen years. She did this almost every night, and never met a challenge until she met Obsidian. Obsidian was peculiar at first.

I didn't know if I would like him. I definitely didn't see how in the world they were going to fall for each other, especially after how they initially met.

Did my opinion change halfway through about Obsidian and Cady together?

They were hot together, once Obsidian stopped acting like a douche.

This was truly bad ass and I loved it from the first page. I don't want to dive too deep into a review because I might be tempted to make this review a spoiler. There were some dramatic and tense moments. There was a big OMG moment and I was like...

But I got a feeling...

Yes, a feeling that the rest of this series is going to be amazing!

I picked this one up because a high school classmate raved about it on FB. Evidently she's from the same area I'm from? At any rate, all I knew about it was that it was supernatural fiction. I didn't realize it was erotica. So, let me address that first. I don't read a lot of erotica. I'm not opposed, it's just not my normal thing. And I don't care to be surprised going into it. However, her sex scenes were pretty steamy, but quite a few decidedly un-sexy word choices had a way of really taking you out of the scene.

In the beginning, she mentions the city she lives in and I think that's cool because I'm going to get some local flavor. I grew up very, very close to that city. But there's NO local flavor. Besides one co-worker and an annoying customer, you don't even meet anyone else in her town. And there's a bookstore? Maybe it's changed a whole lot since I lived there, but there wouldn't be a book store in that town. It's teensy. Of course, she could be driving to a bigger city for her job, but I didn't get that impression at all, since she's running into people she's known her entire life constantly.

Now, the story. It was very, very thin. This book is very short (less than 200 pages). And at least half of that was filled up with sex scenes. It left very little time to actually advance the plot.

So, there ya go. If you just want to read some erotica with a mild supernatural theme, go ahead. Otherwise, skip it.

It was an interesting story, a good start for a series. There was insta-love which bugs me sometimes, sometimes doesn't. In this one, I didn't love or hate it. I did like that both characters were strong warriors. She forgives him very quickly (too quickly IMO) for the beat down she got in their first meeting. The whole exhibitionist thing (Grimm suddenly appearing).... might have been nice for Obsidian to mention that custom of theirs! Oh, and can I just say real quick that I want my own Smyl? Tee hee! Then again, I have a feeling there's still a TON we don't know about the Shikar. I wish there had been a little bit more about them and their customs, etc. Also, at some point, we'll have to figure out why she is how she is. Obviously something happened for her to have these gifts. I'm guessing the next one might be about Grimm and the girl he saw in the other realm. There's going to have to be some real coaxing there, lol.

A little on the gory side but a pretty good book. I read it before, but forgot how graphic this book can be at times when it comes to the aftermath of the battles and some of the during parts. Some of the language in the love scenes was also rather vulgar and stirred only my need to go ick all over again. Cady makes for a good character and balance for the very Alpha male, Obsidian, but some of her quips were just downright childish and kind of eye roll-inducing. The rest of the characters were a fun mix, one of my favorites being The Traveler. He's interesting. The book is a little more rushed than I would have liked, especially the ending, and over with far too quickly for the amount of story covered, but I liked it. The vulgarity in the love scenes though and the amount of gore kept me from giving it more than three stars. Some stuff can be imagined perfectly well without having it described more than necessary. I can be trusted to figure out if you kill something the way the bad guys were killed, it's going to be a little disgusting without all the details.

#1 Horde Wars series

5 Stars!

Exciting, unique, smokin' hot sexy, super intriguing demon ("Horde") hunters.

Lots of action, I LOVE this world! The Shikar are a breed of warriors who live hidden inside the Earth (or in another dimension?). They fight the demons who have found an entryway into Earth.

Cady Swann is a human, who has been fighting demons alone for 15 years - or so she thought. She had no idea anyone else -- human or otherwise -- knew of the demons, until she meets Obsidian, a fierce and sexy warrior.

Shikar characters are so unique! Edge, who has blades/swords coming out of his arms and hands ... Cinder, who is an Incinerator Caste warrior ... the mysterious Traveller ... and more!

The demons are vividly described -- some are quite literally monsters.

A super-fun read -- first thing in the a.m. I am ordering more in this series. Sherri L. King is tops on my Most Lusted After Author list.

I so wanted to like Cady she had all the elements that usually work to make a fun heroine and at first I was like yeah I like her but... she just seemed to become almost like a plot device really quickly and didn't seem to grow or change at all. The hero wasn't any better the two of them were like 2D designs that just did what the plot said with no actual development change or genuine emotion. Also i found the hero to be a massive prick, did not like him at all.
I just found I couldn't care about them or anyone else except maybe the traveller guy, there seemed to be some depth with him but not much. The whole thing just didn't hold me at all and I just skimmed or outright over every sex scene hoping for some plot and depth to come but nope couldn't find it. Perhaps I missed stuff because I didn't read the sex scenes but I honestly didn't care enough about them to read through their escapades.

This was a pleasantly surprising freebie. I loved the characters and the story line. This had a lot of steaminess but had enough meat and action to make it more enjoyable and not just some meaningless one-night feeling book. There were some parts that were uncomfortable personally for me but they were sparce and weren't long. This had plenty of humor, strong characters, plenty of steaminess, emotions, great story, good action and a great ending. A book I might end up reading again that had laughing a little, trying to get my kung-fu on, smiling, getting a little warm and pretty much had fun reading. Great for an anytime read. I would definitely like to read more in this series. Especially with Grimm and 'the girl'. That sounds intriguing and good. A hooker of a freebie and worth more than I paid for it! ;) Totally Enjoy!

I enjoyed the crux of the book. The world building was good. The concept of each character was interesting. The series' plot arch is intriguing.

But the execution in this book lacked. The dialog felt contrived and often pushed information in inappropriate times and ways. The verbiage felt forced, awkward. The story lacked self talk and character development in general. I found myself rolling my eyes at the ridiculous, when in actuality the concept could have worked if set up better (or at all).

My guess is the series gets better with each book. The idea is there, and presentation tends to get better with experience.

I read this back when it was first released in 2004. I liked it back then because the heroine was a POC(hispanic I believe) and she was a bada$$! I think my copy was erased or something because I haven't seen it in years (and yes I do read books multiple times). I saw this free on Amazon and snatched it up. It'll be interesting to see if it is as good to me now that it's been ten years... I'll leave a review after I reread it.

I didn't like this book, and I'm not sure there is anything good in it that is reason enough to read it.
The plot was weak, some human fighting monsters and some super natural creature showing up in her house and somehow they fall in love? =_=;;
And even the fighting parts weren't interesting.
Anyways, I won't read anymore books from these series or the author.

Cady´s been fighting demons for a long while, quite literally, having abilities no one else seems to have. Kick ass, able and smart mouthed. Now a new player comes along, what is it he wants?
Action, smutty fluff and demons. The heroine didn´t really connect with me, she came across more bratty than capable.

This book had some hot sex scenes but I found the writing kinda abrupt with little character and plot development. The characters seemed to jump from stage to stage, decision to decision without much reflection and the sex scenes had little flow to them. A quick read, but just okay overall. Not sure if I'll read this author again as I like the total package: hot sex and good writing.

Hmm... it was an ok story. A lot of things annoyed me (like the instantaneous falling in lust/love of the MCs) but I did like the Traveler... and the Elder seemed interesting. Though, what does it say when the hero & heroine are not my favorite characters?
