This collection of Supergirl comics starts with some good stories about Supergirl dealing with the pressure of being the only survivor of her immediate family and her world. However, the quality of the stories drop off towards the end, so the quality of this collection is uneven.
This books collects two very good solo Supergirl tales by Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer, who dig into being a teen orphan and sole survivor of your planet, while spinning a pair of delightful all-ages adventures (Brainiac's shell program on Argo is activated, rebuilding the villain, but maybe observing Kara's mom planted the seed of something more in his shell?; and thwarted by Supergirl in Kara's Superman: The Animated Series debut, Granny Goodness looks for revenge by freeing Jax-Ur, Mala and Argoan nightmare General Zod from the Phantom Zone - while Superman's out of town!), and two solid Justice League stories that (mostly) feature Supergirl (young hero makes good in epic "Darkseid attempt to breach the Source Wall" battle, and even villains have families at the holidays, with Supergirl in a support role to Atom Smasher), both written by Adam Beechen. The solo chapters are worth the cost of this book, so anything you get from the JLU chapters is just gravy.
The Dorkin and Dyer stories are fun with great Superman: TAS style art by Bret Blevins to back them up. The last half is forgettable, except for making Supergirl tell Martian Manhunter “Fo’ shizzle, Martian Manizzle!” which I’m sure really connected with the youth of 15 years ago.
Kara In-Ze survived the destruction of Argo City with one mission: to go to Earth and protect her infant cousin, Kal-El. When frozen in deep space, she awakens to discover he is Superman of Earth and she is still a teenager. Determined to help, she becomes Supergirl and learns to live again.
'Supergirl' is drawn effectively to mirror the style of the 'Superman' animated series and the stories are fun, with a hint of melancholy in keeping with Kara's orphaned state. The relationship with Superman is well developed and Supergirl feels like an independent character, rather than an addition to the 'Superman' plot.
I’ve been sick lately. Plus my comptuer died. I have a back up computer but it’s not really good enough to get any real work done. So I’ve been reading a little more. Wah, Wah.
Since I enjoyed the Batgirl Bruce Timm story, I thought I’d try the Supergirl version.
”Last Daughter of Argo” In this story it looks like Argo is another planet in the same system as Kryption.
A friend from Krypton calls her and tells that there is a rumor that something terrible is going to happen to Krypton. Of course, they all have Brainiac watching over them so they should be fine.
But as Kara watches Krypton blows up. She gets her parents.
They discover that the explosion on Krypton has moved Argo out of orbit and it is now moving away from the sun.
After a while as Argo gets colder, Kala (Kara’s mother) says they have no choice but to put themselves in cold sleep in medical chambers and divert all power to the sleep capsules and the distress beacon and that someone, someday may help revive them.
Which someone does - on Earth.
Superman found her and put her up with his parents.
Her secret identity her is Kara Kent. After reading about Superman she decides she has to do the same thing and eventually does.
Clark scolds her about going adventuring so early. They try to ground her but she sneaks off to save people when she can.
But eventually Clark is going away and allows Kara to guard Metropolis for the weekend.
”Now go have fun with your bigshot Justice League… ”
Soon enough a terrorist threat comes in and when Supergirl shows up Kanto from Apokolips tells her it was a trap for Superman. He stabs her with a Kyrptonite knife. But it doesn’t work on her.
”… with the terrorist threat ended, Metropolis is all abuzz by the reappearance of Superman’s female sidekick, Supergirl… “
Darkseid is not happy with Granny Goodness because she was not supposed to send anything to Earth - that breaks the pact with New Genesis. He’s so mad he yanks her wig off. He tells her not to violate the treaty again.
So Granny decides to go into the Phantom Zone and get some criminals who hate Superman to do her dirty work.
The three Kryptonians find Supergirl first and destroy S.T.A.R. Labs, pretty sure they’ve killed Supergirl and they go looking for Superman.
They tear up Metropolis trying to lure Superman out but Supergirl comes back. But this time she’s brought Kryptonite to use against them. Apparently being from Argo City makes her immune. But one of the three is also Argoan!
Turns out he is General Zod. He leaves the other two criminals to die and Supergirl runs away.
To the Fortress of Solitude. Where she finds Brainiac (which is a glowing ball that talks to her when she touches it, like a Kryptonian Siri).
Boy that Supergirl outfit is just terrible.
Brainiac is not helpful and General Zod has followed her to the Fortress of Solitude to find Superman. They fight some more.
This story was okay. Lots of action Not very deep, but that’s okay.
I’ll give it 3 stars.
”Reunion” has Superman and Supergirl on a planet with no atmosphere where Kara’s mother is buried. She say a prayer over her. I think they are on Argo City but there is no dome and I know the backstories are different. I thnk Argo is a whole planet in this continuity.
I think the spacesuits are so that they can use rockets to propel themselves when they are far from the sun but that’s mostly guessing. They mention that they don’t have their powers here as well.
They are taking a device that has all of her family’s records stored inside.
Profession Hamilton at S.T.A.R. Labs is trying to decipher Supergirl’s computer records but having no luck when it appears that the device has taken control of the computers and the lab.
A security guard tries to shoot at the device, but it uses a laser they had lying around in the lab to blast him first.
While celebrating Mother’s day with Ma and Pa Kent, Clark and Kara overhear explosions at S.T.A.R. Labs and fly over to help.
As they bust into the lab and see the Professor tied up they are both hit with a Red Sun laser also lying around the lab. The Professor tells them that the In-Ze Computer immediately started building a device.
Out of this device comes a female version of Brainiac with Kara’s mothers voice.
Over at Lexcorp, Lex Luthor is told that someone has hacked into their computers, taking a complete copy of Brainiac and erased the original copy!
Back at S.T.A.R. Labs Brainiac shows up.
”Yes, you poor, carbon-infested fools. I have returned—”
A big fight ensues. I won’t spoil it except to say that Kara’s mother is influential in the battle.
This was a decent story. A little rushed in something that could actually have been told over many issues, but ultimately I liked it.
I’ll give it 3 stars.
”Orphans” has Ethen Beavers doing the art and I really like it. It’s a weird ‘Kirby does Cartoons’ look.
Supergirl is moping around the Kent farm that she has to save the world ”and” do farm chores and homework. Superman advices her that the Kents have raised a super-child before so they know what they’re doing.
Later.
Supergirl is helping the Justice League with an Apokolips fight in space. Martian Manhunter asks her to rescue Rocket Red.
”Fo’ shizzle, Martian Maizille!”
Darkseid is apparently trying to use a n X-Cannon to blast through the Source Wall, which is a giant sculpture wall of giants in space the seals in something bad. Kind of like the galactic barrier in Star Trek. As the comic puts it:
”They’re not statues, Yuri, they’re ancient beings that tried and failed to break through a dimensional barrier that’s behind them…. the barrier that separates our universe from The Source”
Orion (Darkseid’s son) wants to attack Darkseid directly, but the JLA talks him out of it.
Superman, Wonder Woman, Captain Atomic and Zaurel take on the cannon’s X-beam directly… and lose.
This causes Orion to lose it and attack Darkseid directly. He also loses.
This causes Supergirl to attack Darkseid directly.
”You’re too busy trying to conquer all of reality to know what kind of lousy dad you are, that you should treasure every moment with your kid because you don’t know how many moments you’ll have… !”
Supergirl’s got abandonment issues.
She gets some good licks in and winds up destroying the X-Cannon. Darkseid leaves, but says he’s got plans for Supergirl.
That’s a neat full-blast story! 5 stars cause comic books don’t get much more comic-booky that that. I’m kind of surprised they go into so much Fourth-World lore, but I don’t mind it at all.
Big Barda makes a cameo appearance. Which I realize may only be important to me.
”Smashing Through the Snow” starts with Supergirl kissing Atomic Smasher under the mistletoe.
The Justice League has a policy that only the youngest members work on a holiday. So Firestorm, Atomic Smasher, Powers Girl, Star Spangled Kid and Supergirl are having a little Christmas party.
An older Hawkgirl is there as well and wearing her old uniform. Though it looks like the same one to me. She talks about the Thangarian Invasion. Where did all of this stuff happen?
The artwork deserves a special callout. It’s Carlo Barberi and Jim Royals and it’s really good. Not mimicking Timm hardly at all, but still a nice clean comic book look I like a lot.
A distress call from Iron Heights comes in. Girder has escaped. They find him but wish they hadn’t as he creams them all! Great fight!
When Atom Smasher wakes up he goes after Girder who heads to a residential section. He asks for just 20 minutes, but Atom Smasher isn’t having it. It takes some doing but he captures Girder.
That was a nice Christmas story. Not too sappy, but fun. 5 stars. Usually Christmas stories are where a lot of suck is written. This was my favorite of the books because of the art
So that’s Girl of Steel. A good 4 star book, marred only by her costume.
Recommended for fans but it really makes me curious where all this other lore is being printed?
Collects four Supergirl-centric stories from the Superman Adventures and Justice League Unlimited comics based on the animated shows. The first one is Supergirl's origin story that I've read before in a separate Superman Adventures collection. It's very good, full of action and emotion. The next one features Kara and Clark investigating Argo and encountering Brainiac, as Kara learns about a piece of her past. The last two Justice League issues aren't as good but they both also deal with family in some way.
So, a solid collection, if not up to the heights of Superman Adventures at its best.
A nice collection of stories with some fun New Gods action thrown in the mix. It loses some points for the art. Supergirl is sexualized in nearly every image. It was even more than I’d expect from a comic aimed at adults. Weird move.
This book has four stories in total. The first two are wonderful tales; the last two are not too good. But the art style based on the DC Animated Universe of the 1990s and 2000s is most welcome. I gave the book one extra star as a result.
