Update: Book 2 will be released on June 20, 2023 (next week)! I just finished ARC reading book 2, and it was amazing. I'd highly recommend reading this series if you like:
• fantasy romance
• reverse harem/why choose
• fated mates
• rejected mate
• forced proximity
• light bullying (I usually don't like bullying, but this is very manageable)
• FMC is surrounded by really protective brothers/fathers/mother and awesome friends
• academy romance
• 10/10 jealousy and groveling scenes
• FMC who holds her head high and moves on with her life/other relationships after she is rejected by her 1st fated mate

I LOVE this series.
________________________________________

This book is amazing, and I NEED the rest of this series ASAP. This is a short fantasy reverse harem.

I picked up this book based off of one video I saw on TikTok, and I am shocked by how much I loved it. I went into this story with low expectations--I just wanted a quick fantasy RH palate cleanser, and I ended up reading this in one sitting. I absolutely couldn't put it down, and when I finished it, I flipped back through my favorite parts again.

Plot Overview:
Lyra is the Night Princess who has been closely guarded her whole life. The Fae people know about Lyra's existence, but as the next Queen, her personal details have been closely guarded, and the people do not know what she looks like, how old she is, what her name is, etc. As is tradition for the future Night Queen, Lyra has to be glamoured to look differently while she goes to mating revelries, and her true identity and appearance won't be restored/revealed until she meets all 4 of her mates. This is done to ensure that her mates' acceptance of her is genuine, rather than mates accepting her because of her power.

After Lyra's glamour is in place, she goes to her first mating revelry and meets Axel, her first mate, who is from the spring court (the Queen always has at least 1 mate from each of the 4 courts). Axel rejects Lyra as a mate because he is holding out for a more powerful Fae (he doesn't sense strong magic from her because of the glamour). Ironically, Axel is specifically hoping to mate with the Night Princess. Obviously, he does not know Lyra IS the Night Princess, so he rejects Lyra for ...Lyra. When he rejects her, Lyra rejects Axel too, and she deems him not worthy of her. Unfortunately for Lyra and Axel, they then start at the same Academy right after this rejection (they're in their 20s, but need to go to a magic academy). While Lyra is ready to move on and forget Axel, he does not seem so ready to forget her. He starts to bully her along with his girlfriend, but he is also absolutely obsessed with Lyra (he's always staring at her, is super jealous when she hooks up with other guys, acts possessive of her, etc.). Tbh, it seems to me that Axel did not want to reject Lyra, but he was forced to by his parents because there were times where he seemed really regretful, and he makes comments about how it's not safe for her at the school/she needs to leave. Also, no one at school knows that Axel rejected Lyra because in this society, it's super frowned upon to reject a fated mate, so both of their families had to cover up the rejection.

My Thoughts
This book is a slow-burn reverse harem, and this 1st book in the series had minimal spice. However, I liked how casual they are about sex in this world, and Lyra is not some naive virgin who is constantly pining after a mate that rejected her. She's sweet, but while she has her vulnerable moments, I respected how ready she was to move on with other fae and just kept asking Axel to leave her alone. It made sense because the fae in this world are very sexual creatures before they find their mates. After the rejection, Lyra moved on to another relationship with another fae male at her school, Sidric, who she knows is not her mate, but he was a good friend. This obviously drove Axel crazy (even though he had a girlfriend too), and I loved the jealousy. Lyra also knows that as soon as she finds her next mate, she will stop seeing Sidric. I found Lyra to be quite refreshing as a FMC.

Anyways, I really liked the rejected mates/fated mates aspect, and the world-building is super easy to follow. Lyra's older brothers are also so cute and protective of her, and her fathers are hilarious (Pai had me lolling). This book has some 10/10 jealousy scenes and some decent groveling for book 1. I'm looking forward to seeing more groveling, from Axel especially. We have only met 2 of Lyra's mates so far (officially). I hope Axel is super jealous of her 2nd mate who accepted her as a mate right away in the cliffhanger at the end. Based on the cliffhanger, I'm REALLY excited to get to know her second mate more (she only meets him in the last chapter). I'm also looking forward to seeing Lyra's powers developed because we don't get to learn a lot about them since she is glamoured and has to hide her powers.

This was one of the better RH books that I've read in awhile. While there are some noticeable typos (specifically sentences lacking commas or commas being used incorrectly) throughout the book, I did not think that it detracted from the story. Putting the typos aside, the writing was generally pretty good. I am fully invested in the story, and I liked all of the characters, which is a rare feat for me, as I tend to be a harsh character critic. It was a very quick read with good pacing, solid characters, and a super interesting premise.

I want more RH readers to read this book because I thought it was great. I can't wait for the next book to come out! "June 2023 release date" feels so far away.

This was a fun one! Direct and to the point. I loved the side characters and the h. It’s really hard to find a h who will take the high road and rise above the pettiness in a rejected mate/bully story. I’m excited to learn more about Axel and what is really going on there. I’m def invested and intrigued.

3.5 overall because I wanted more angst and more world building. I have a lot of questions.

Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶️

First read of 2023 and I honestly couldn’t have picked a better book to start the year off. It’s got everything I love; Fated mates, a strong FMC, supportive side characters, and a well written plot. I couldn’t put it down.

Lyra (FMC) was rejected by her first fated mate. Instead of drowning in pity, she struggled in a realistic way. She found strength within her vulnerability. Her character growth felt so genuine. I don’t think Lyra would have been that strong if it wasn’t for her incredible family and the encouraging friends she met along the way. They all had their specific place to aid her in her journey.

Absolutely disgusted the way her first mate, Axel, acted. I do feel like there is more to the story though. Since their bond didn’t fully break, I’m curious if he’ll still be one of her mates. I honestly hope he doesn’t. The crap he pulled is unforgivable.

One of my favorite parts about this story is how gender does not matter. People are fated and bonded to pairs or groups of FM, MM, and FF. It was refreshing to see an author be so inclusive. My only complaint was that it’s only 145 pages. I wanted so much more! The ending had me so giddy and excited for what’s to come. I can’t wait to see we’re this author takes us. Hoping the next book comes out soon!

It's a good read

But... There are a lot of info dumps, which as an avid reader I'm sure I'm not the only one guilty of doing, promptly skipped over. If it's important I'll get back to it, a background thought. And no I didn't get back to it. I love the feeling of love feels you get with her family but I didn't care for which dad held what court. If it was her mates being described in such detail I probably would have tried to commit it to memory.

The stars loss is because I still don't think we've met the heroine, she's glossed over. More effort is spent on her feelings for Axel than getting to know Lyra. I like to root for my heroines, what would I be rooting for here? She's a princess... Yey.... For her. I'm still feeling like I'm outside looking through the window. There is no immersement.

It's fun and lighthearted but kind of flat. Love the note this one ended on; was intending on not reading the sequel but now I just HAVE to know how the next one goes lol.

Tropes/ Key Points:
✨Fae Courts
✨ Why-Choose Romance
✨Bully Romance (Mild)
✨Fated Mates
✨Rejected Mate Bond
✨Strong Female Lead

Lyra is the princess of the Night court and is destined to become the Queen. She isn’t eligible for the mantle yet as she hasn’t found her fated mates. Traditionally, the Queen has one mate from each of the seasonal courts. Now, it’s finally time for her to enter the public eye and find them.

There’s just one catch, no one can know who she is.

She enters society under a glamour that slightly changes her appearance and hides the strength of her magic powers. Disguised as a mousy girl, she steps into the mating ritual to find her first mate….only for him to be livid at the sight of her.

Axel feels that he is destined to be mates to the night princess, and little does he know that he just shunned her by telling her to leave and never show her face again. She didn’t listen, so he was forced to reject her in front of the entire court. This left her broken and wondering if this would be a pattern in meeting her undiscovered mates.

He was faced with rumors that circulated around the fact that he did what none had ever dared to do… reject the bond.

Lyra must move forward as she enters her first year of “college” only to find that Axel is enrolled there too. With her identity still hidden and Lyra unable to escape him, she manages life and temporary love interests while Axel shames and mocks her. This spurs his girlfriend to join in with her friends to do the same.

She tries to temporarily move on, but he acts possessive and jealous despite the fact that he claims to not want her for himself.

This is book one in a why choose series and it’s such an amazing debut. I am already so eager for book two and don’t want to wait till June, especially with that cliffhanger.

I think the story is fabulously told and the “Bully” side was mild and not overwhelming. I could see how even with what had happened, she could eventually forgive and love him. So many Bully Romances go too far these days and it’s basically just straight abuse and I worry for women who like those. 😂

There were some minor editing issues towards the beginning of the book but they were swiftly corrected as the story went on and in no way took away from anything.

The FMC balances this air of strength and regality with a hint of weakness and vulnerability. It gives dimension to her and depth of character that a lot of authors fail to provide. She is not perfect and it’s very relatable. She also has the maturity level that you would expect from one of her age and position. Something else that I find to be irritating in allot of books when the FMC acts like a child despite being groomed to be Queen soon.

I hope we do get to explore more of Axel’s characters in future books. There were some sides of him that got hinted to in this debut that I am eager to delve into. I do applaud the authors decision to only tease these sides, because If they would have been fully shown it would have been rushed and I wouldn’t have liked it as much. It gives me something to look forward to.

The authors confidence was also something that you could see growing throughout the book. It is shown in how the story just envelops you and pulls you in. I felt every emotion alongside Lyra and that is such a feat!

The FMC is a little innocent for my taste but I really liked this book :
- cute FMC
- love the family dynamic
- it’s a mate romance => so it’s mostly instant love. It’s a little too prefect and predictable for my taste. However, I forgot all that because the story was really cute and I’m rooting for the FMC.

I already read book 2 and 3. I will read the rest of the series.

How are these people in university? This book is some of the most childish self-insert I’ve ever read.

Did anyone who gave this book more than 2 stars actually read it? It reads high school fantasy get back at Regina George and the quarterback crush who didn’t like me.

Half of the book is about “starball” aka Quidditch but it was so boring.

They eat spaghetti and tacos at school. She has all the elemental powers but it doesn’t talk about her learning anything about magic, just random assignments she submits online??? Did this even have to be a fantasy??

She’s with some random dude for 3/4 of the book who isn’t relevant to her actual supposed mates? Why??? It’s like all filler except for 10% of this entire book.

None of the regions or courts are explained. None of people’s powers and how they are manifested or inherited are explained. Her bff draws her blood for an experiment on allergies to honey??? What??? Your bff is not a doctor, she is a first year university student!

There was so much potential, but nothing was explained.

Ok so I actually enjoyed this, Lyra was rejected and instead of the classic 'my body betrays me' she legit ignores her mate that rejects her. While he was relentless in bullying she was indifferent. I loved it. But I had a lot of issues. Mainly the plot, she got her clothes ripped off of her from her bully, leaving her in her underwear. Then the next paragraph was her bully pointing out her underwear but apparently she was actually wearing a bikini? Then she passed out from her allergy and was rushed straight home with her geas fallen. But somehow during the time she was passed out Axel was by her bed saying he was sorry? How did he not see who she really was if the geas dropped? I thought the geas was to hide her being the Night Princess? Also, idk if I missed it but theres legit no reasoning or explanation as to why she has to conceal her identity. No one knows who the night princess is or looks like. But why?? Overall, the story was very slow and just Axel and his side piece bulling her, Lyra having a romantic relationship with someone who's not her mate, and the last paragraph her meeting her 2nd mate. If these plot holes were fixed this would 100% be a 4⭐️

Easy read for those looking for a fantasy with rejected mates, fae, shifters, good family, found family, all in an academy/college setting. The future Night Queen is looking for her mates in the fae world and the first one she finds rejects her. Spring court guy is a fail as he doesn’t recognize her for who she is and lets her go. So begins a story set in a college with a jealous guy and a girl figuring out her next steps. It was a fun read and the characters felt real and modern. The friendship she had with Callie had a lot authentic moments and I loved that the story didn’t devolve into deep dark angst. It was easily consumed and enjoyable. We had some bad things happen but it works out and the story ends with a little cliffhanger. This book also had short chapters which is my crack. I finished it so fast and am ready to consume the whole series. This story fit the bill of a good fantasy palate cleanser.

This is a short RH/ why choose romance that really caught me off guard with how much I was hooked into the story. I saw a short video on Tiktok that made me intrigued enough to read the book! The plot follows Lyra (FMC), the Fae Night Princess on her journey to discover her 4+ mates from each of the seasonal courts in the kingdom during her time at Araphel Academy. I really enjoyed the development of the FMC, the interesting/ funny side characters, and the academia setting. This book is the first in a series and I cannot wait to read the next book!

Fun, quick read

I first found this story on Kindle Vella so I'm was glad to see it on KU. It's a got almost all my favorite tropes in one book. I like Lyras story and this take on fated mates, I look forward to the other books and her meeting her other mates. I also can't wait for the groveling when Axel realizes his mistake.

Okay, so this book was a little bit of a chaotic, ridiculous mess…but yet I will likely still read the next one when it comes out.

I think the issue here is that I love a lot of the concepts here. There are a lot of fun things about this world and a lot the set up. However, I felt like the execution of the ideas were a little spotty. For example, I read the first few pages of the book several times trying to figure out why Lyra’s dad had so many names only to realize they were different people and that the world allowed for people to have multiple mates.

The characters were a little on the flat side as well. I walked away from the book feeling like I knew very little about Lyra. She’s night princess, she is glamoured as she attempts to find her mate(s) and she’s dealing with rejection from one of them. That’s all I got. There was kind of one big characteristic about of the main cast and that’s kind of where it ends

All my criticisms aside I thought it was fun. I enjoyed reading it even if some of that enjoyment may have come from some “wait, what?” moments. And even if the end is a pretty standard cliffhanger I’m still a sucker for it and am curious where the next book goes.

This was such a good read! I immediately was sucked into the story and plowed through this book! If you liked Zodiac Academy this gives the same vibes (minus the pettiness/immaturity and with better writing)

Lyra was written so well and I absolutely appreciated how mature her character was. She was able to relax and have fun sure but at the end of the day she never acted in a way that jeopardized who she truly is.

NGL I’m rooting for Axel. I want his redemption arc after that small snippet we got of him! Plus after that cliffhanger I can’t wait for the next book to see how it all plays out!
