The Mariah Mission

Rate this book
It is a truth universally acknowledged that every queer girl, at some point, develops a secret crush on their best friend. In Reagan's case, that crush came in the form of Mariah best friend since seventh grade, the most beautiful girl in existence, and incredibly, painfully, straight.

Or so Reagan thought. Two years ago while she was in her junior year of high school, right before she was about to confess, the world stopped. Two years later, her entire year is invited back for a one day speed-run of the senior year they never got to have. There'll be pep-rallies, sports games, senior pranks, assassins, prom, and graduation but most Mariah. Two years older, two years different, and (if social media's supposed to be trusted) officially queer and single.

They've grown apart. Soon, They'll be hours away from each other again. But Reagan is going to do everything she can these next 24-hours to help them grow together again and maybe, hopefully, they'll grow into something more too.

I know, I know. I hate books that acknowledge COVID too but I'm excited for this idea and can't keep setting everything in 2018 forever (plus setting it in the summer after 2022 means I get to skip all the extra spooky bits)

Thanks to the author for providing me with an early copy of this book!

A lovely book, The Mariah Mission grabbed my attention from the first few pages and left me engaged throughout the story. The aspect of the story that made it such a success for me was the protagonist, Raegan. Flawed yet loveable, Raegan was extremely well-developed and felt like a real teenager. After reading so many YA books that seemed to be written for adults, I loved seeing a character that teens of a variety of ages could relate to. I also appreciated how Raegan's character growth was incorporated into the story. Many books that take place in 24 hours struggle to depict the proganist's progression in a realistic manner, but The Mariah Mission did it perfectly. Also, the "A Moment I Probably Should Have Realized That I Was In Love Mariah" sections were a unique touch that seamlessly introduced important moments from Raegan's past into the story. If you enjoy contemporary sapphic YA, The Mariah Mission is the book for you!

Thank you to the author for sending me an early reader copy!

The Mariah Mission is a cute romantic sapphic book that takes place in 24 hours, even though it mentioned covid, and trust me it was not a pleasure to read about it, it was such a fun short read. From early on I loved the characters and could get a vibe about who would ACTUALLY end up together so it was fun to see how the characters developed and came to accept their feelings and act on them. The friend group was one of my favorite things. Even though Reagan's unnecessary outburst was kind of hard to read, i get why it was written.

overall a good book, and to answer the early reader questions, no i was not angry when Raegan's endgame love interest turned out to be different from what the description made it out to be. I honestly figured out that it would be different quite early on but it was still more fun to read than already know about it. It'd be worse if the description clarifies that she's not the real love interest. It adds a nice fun twist to the story and shouldn't be disclosed early on in my opinion.

4.3/5⭐️

Thanks a lot to the author for sending me an early copy of this book!

I loved this book! It’s very short and fast paced, I had to make myself put it down, which is rare for me)

It follows Raegan as she tries to ask out her ex best friend whom she hasn’t seen in 2 years, and has only 24 hours to do it. It gave me strong She Gets the Girl vibes, so if you like that book, you’ll like this one!

The plot was fun, and that plot twist at the end- I was SHOCKED even though it was kind of minor and I should have seen it coming :)

The characters are well written too, and I liked the queer rep) MC is a lesbian, and there’s a major non-binary ace lesbian in whom I saw myself with most of my identities) there’s an important bi character too.
I was a little bit frustrated with MC at certain points, but I understand why it was done that way and how it served her character development.

I’d definitely recommend you to read this book when it comes out, especially if you’re looking for a fun and short queer read!

Thank you to the author for providing me with an early copy of this book!

I really enjoyed this short story! I highly recommend reading it! (And this is coming from someone who never really read short stories). At first I wasn't sure how much in depth we'd get to know the characters (it turns out I learnt a lot more about them than I thought!). The characters really do feel like real people. I definitely resonated with some of the characters. I really liked the non-binary lesbian representation (i've never read a book with a character with both of the same labels as me!) I especially liked when one of the characters said, "Lesbianism has always included non-binary people". I feel like some people found it a bit confusing that you can have both of the labels non-binary and lesbian. The plot is intriguing (I didn't want to put the book down!) And surprisingly everything in the story happens within 24 hours! I'm looking forward to reading more of the author's stories.

Thank you so much to the author for providing me with an early reader’s copy!

I absolutely loved this book, the entire concept was genius and I thought it respectfully dealt with a lot of important topics such as queer struggles and Covid-19. The characters were very well-developed and I liked how we got to see the comparison between the ‘high-school version’ of these characters and ‘who they are now’. Covid has shaped a lot of our lives over the past couple years and it was nice to be able to connect with characters over that. I liked the unexpected friendship group and I loved how many characters were queer without it being a super big deal. All in all a fantastic book that I highly recommend!

Thank you to the author for sending me an early copy of the Mariah Mission!! I really liked this book and it would be a five star read if it weren’t for the main character. I wasn’t a massive fan of Reagan, but that’s alright!! Other then that I really liked this book.

i cried ????
———————————————————————————————————
For a book that takes place entirely in 24 hours, The Mariah Mission manages to achieve a lot despite being a short, fun read.

Our main character Raegan, is, of course, flawed but we get to see significant development in her character, and the events of the book are laid out in such a way that allows her growth to progress and unfold naturally. This even includes some of the minor characters which made me want to see some more of their story and journey after the events of the book.

The characters are all young adults that have graduated high school two (?) years prior, and it was great to see the juxtaposition between who they are now versus the people they used to be back then and how they're kind of bridging the gap between the two after seeing their year-mates in person after so long.

I also really loved that in the first half of the book, every other chapter is a memory of Raegan and Mariah's childhood which helps give context to their friendship and history so the entire storyline comes together, and I think that also helps us to care more about the characters and their development.

The Mariah Mission has some great LGBT representation, especially asexual and non-binary. Some misconceptions are touched upon and clarified a bit, which I think was really good. And better yet, we get to see a character who identifies as a non-binary lesbian which!!! really gets me 😍 to see that representation!!! I think we sometimes forget that while labels can help us understand and feel better about ourselves and how we may fit into this world, in the end, words and language are all just made up and very arbitrary, and meanings evolve and grow. 😤 If a non-binary individual wants to identify as a lesbian then let! them! be! A very good, important line in the book:
“. . . lesbianism has always included non-binary people.”

As for why I cried: Raegan and Mariah have a really deep conversation near the end of the book and come to an understanding and growth with each other that just ! hit me really hard and I think it was an important conversation for them to have and for the book to have included. And I think it especially helps them come together even better and more believable in the end and I'm just very satisfied and happy with how the book ends, even though I wanted to see more

I received an ARC from the author
TW: deadnaming & misgendering, homophobia & hate speech,
3.6

The romance in this book is unexpected and built well. I thought the use of the trope at play was effective, and the slow unraveling and work at play led the tension in a really great way. I was definitely rooting for the endgame by at least the first third, and loved the way chemistry built.

I also thought the pacing was good. It keeps thinks moving without flying through without any time to reflect. The use of the events as a framing device was cool, and broke it up in useful ways.

The friend group's vibes were also nice, and having those extra people made it feel fuller. And, very specifically, I love Ben!

My issues were mostly with two things. Firstly, the characters all felt pretty thin. Most if not all feel underdescribed, and their personalities are fairly flat. I wanted to feel more invested in these characters, but it was difficult because I didn't feel like I knew them.

And, the more important issue, is I just didn't connect with or enjoy the way Theo's identities were played out via Reagan. I do think the author wrote a nonbinary character well, and I was warned before reading that Reagan's ideas on asexuality were going to be wrong/harmful at first, so I was ready for that journey, but I just didn't feel comfortable with the way it played out. Reagan is a lesbian who claims to see Theo as nonbinary, . The asexuality was talked about more blatantly, but I had been hoping it would be given the space to be discussed as something beyond an obstacle- it isn't. It just really didn't feel like Reagan respected or took the time to try to understand Theo's identities, and as someone who shares both those identities it really put a big damper on my enjoyment.

Thank you to Alex for an eARC!
The way I would describe this book is like the works of John Green without being problematic and with a tonne of great rep.
It is such a quintessential YA coming-of-age story with the added element of COVID-19 which makes it extremely relatable for today's teens who have had their most important teenage years taken away from them by a global pandemic. I think all COVID-affected teens should read this to make them feel better about all the teen experiences they have missed out on because of the pandemic. And, because COVID-19 isn't mentioned incessantly, it still feels like it could be relatable for anyone who has lived as a teenager in a world where they were told they couldn't be who they are. I think that Alex Nonymous does a great job at capturing the queer teen experience with the inclusion of two very different but extremely relatable queer experiences from Raegan who is out and proud to Theo who is still on their way there.

Thank you so much to the author for giving me and early copy of this book!

I want to start out by saying The Mariah Mission has some of my favourite ace rep I have ever read. Having a non-binary asexual lesbian character and allowing the main character to learn about asexuality along the way was very refreshing to read!

This book follows Raegan, a lesbian who has been in love with her best friend all her life. Raegan and Mariah lost touch over the last few years, but in the span of 24 hours, and with the help of some new friends, Raegan plans to finally ask her out. This book has wonderful rep, excellent pacing, and a very unexpected plot twist! I would recommend to fans of She Gets the Girl, or people looking for a short and very queer read.

Received an ARC to provide honest feedback. I’ve provided that direct to the author but here’s what you need to know.

If you’re long past your high school years like me this book will take you back to all the anxiety and stress of trying to figure your shit out while being watched closely by your peers. You think you have it all sorted when in actuality you’re not even close.
Loved the book so much I read it in less than a day.
This book is not spicy or steamy but it really does perfectly describe what it’s like to be in that transitional time between being a teenager and fully fledged adult.

This book is an amazing read, it flows so easily, and has both amazing character and world building. When reading this book you can picture what everything looks like from the description in the book. Not only that but it has the best storyline I’ve seen in a while, as Raegan fights to get back her old crush after being separated by Covid. The best part though is how all the characters in this book are well rounded with a full range of emotions and natural reactions (not to mention the amazing queer representation).

Thanks so much to the author for sending me an early reader copy!
The characters were all so relatable and realistic. I feel like being in love with your best friend is such a universal queer experience, and all of those feelings were so well represented.
I wasn't sure if I'd like a story that mentioned COVID, but it put everything about losing a part of your teenage years and missing out on all those experiences into words so well.

I forgot, sometimes. That some people still thought seeing two people that looked like girls dancing together was somehow a personal violation.

It's so hard for me to put in coherent words how much I enjoyed this book but oh my god, everyone please go read it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Alex just has a way with writing friendships that feels extremely realistic and make you feel like you're a part of the group. I've never experienced that with another book, and I'm so happy I get to experience it time and time again with her books.

I knew about Theo being trans before hand but from some reason thought they were ftm and as a nonbinary person myself I was actually very pleasantly surprised that they were also nonbinary- and the scene where Reagan kept reassuring them she doesn't see them as a girl actually meant a lot to me and I kind of teared up a little bit? Just a little bit tho.

I don't know why, but at some point in the book I just realized I started referring to Raegen in my head with they/them pronouns? Don't know why it happened but it is now my official headcanon that later on Raegen comes out as nonbinary, use they/she pronouns, and go by the name Rae.

There was a side mlm ship that I was extremely sad did not happen as I shipped them from the start, but it's fine. I'm only a little bit upset. (Cue to me crying the entire night.)

Now, so I wouldn't break the tradition, I need to call out a character for being autistic. I know Theo is actually autistic, and I'm so extremely happy Alex confirmed it, as it something that was extremely obvious to me since the very beginning, but here is something that might be a little bit controversial: Raegen also feels a bit autistic to me. They are now both autistic to me.

You know what? Just make everyone autistic. The entire friend group is autistic. Thank you.

ALSO JUST WANTED TO ADD I'M EXTREMELY PROUD OF MYSELF BECAUSE I SOMEONE GUESSED WHO HAD REAGEN AS THEIR TARGET AT THE BEGINNING OF THE BOOK AND I WAS RIGHT???

Right so I had to stop myself from reading it in one sitting partly because I had to study but mostly because that one was way too fun to read for it last only a few hours.

First of all, I loved the kind of melancholy vibe that came with catching up on all the fun times missed in high school before entering adulthood. That’s very personal but I feel like it’s definitely relevant for A LOT of us.

Second, the friendships. The world needs more books and any other types of media, really, to portray the importance of friendship like this book. The ones that have been there for years and the ones you form unexpectedly, by, let’s say, shooting someone with a water gun. The love of our friends is everything and we shouldn’t let society make it seem like it’s worth less than romantic love, so thank you for that author.

And as always the characters are messy and flawed and beautifully diverse. They don’t understand their own feelings, and they have regrets and they react badly. It may seem like nothing but to me this is so important.

I was skeptical of this author wanting to publish 22 books before age 22, since any quantitative goal ignores the quality. I'm really glad I did give this one a chance, though. It's an excellent look into a very niche time in the modern era: being someone who was facing their first major shift to adulthood and were in isolation for it and therefore time has somewhat stopped at that point. Choosing to return for a day is an excellent device, since it keeps things moving along and has a gentle sense of urgency to the time spent together without stressing it too much. I really enjoyed the main character's musings about her journey from a shy attachment to Mariah to someone who is confident and takes up more space and makes friends. Also loved the enby and canonically neurodivergent rep with Theodora.

This is short, cute, and a great time capsule into this very specific period and experience for young people.

Pronouns

The Mariah Mission is an absolutely delightful book and an important one for the LGBTQIA up and coming generation.

Teenagers have always had a difficult time figuring out who they were separate from their family. School has been the vision board upon which they have tried out new personalities, new social groups and just about anything new.

Add to that steamy mess of hormones and social habit trails a teen wondering about the various flavors of sexuality and, wham! Twice the confusion.

What I really loved about The Mariah Mission is how faithfully the author presented each girl or boy's authentic feelings. I literally felt my way through the book.

Whether you support or don't support alternative lifestyles, this is a safe book for a parent or an older child to read, perhaps together? It will start a great conversation.

I loved this book so much. The main character is incredibly sweet and adorable even though she has some shitty moments and tries so hard to understand queer culture around her. I also love the representation in this book because there is so much of it, and it was also really amazing to see an MC learning something new about a sexuality that they thought they understood. The book did and didn't go the way you'd expect which was a lot of fun and I just really enjoyed meeting all the characters and experiencing the MCs growth journey with her.

I adored this book!!! It was so fun and sweet, reading it’s comparable to like. Eating a sweet foam, if that makes any sense?
The characters are all really cool and unique, and there were so many relatable feelings in it, it was just painfully down to earth and positive.
On of my favourite parts of the book was the main character making clear, obvious mistakes and being very human, I really enjoyed it and it made the whole thing more realistic

Alex Nonymous has such a talent for using tropes I thought I hated in ways that make me enjoy them like no other. The Mariah Mission is such a fun ride from cover to cover, even when the main character is making her infuriatingly human mistakes. It has some excellent lessons and messages to impart that I wish I'd gotten in middle-school or early high-school, before I learned them the hard way.
