I felt so emotional . . .

They're back!! I am feeling a million things... Happy, sad, and overwhelmed. The series is almost ending and I haven't made peace with it yet. But all good things have to come to an end . . .

I love that Billy the Kid was thrown into this and Sherlock and William tell their tale of New York with their old and new friends. Everyone wants to know what happened in 3 years.

There is a pigeon called Charles Dickens🤣

I am waiting for vol 18 as I feel my heart breaking.

Fellas, is it gay to profess to your rival who helped you fake your death and ran away with you to start a new life in a new country together that he fills your world with color, reminds you that you do have a heart, and that he gives you something to live for? Asking for a friend~

I wanted to like this volume for the Sherlock/William stuff, but good grief it partially recycles white supremacist propaganda with why the US Civil War happened and uses copaganda for the Pinkertons, of all people, completely ignoring like... why strike-breaking is a bad thing? And why not letting the government hire mercenaries against its own citizens is a good thing? I mean the US still hires mercenaries abroad, so it's not like it doesn't happen, but like the Anti-Pinkerton act was a good thing, contrary to whatever is going on in idea here.

For the record, the Pinkertons are and always have been a private security force, not a secret arm of the US Department of Justice. I mean maybe they are, who knows, but for all intents and purposes, publicly, they've always been a private security force/group of mercenaries and largely a bunch of for-hire assholes willing to work for the bosses to spy on workers and oppose worker's rights by any means necessary. Please look up the Homestead Strike. Since the majority of people reading this are very likely not rich monopolists like Carnegie, just FYI, people should not be sympathizing with an organization like the Pinkertons. Don't be a scab.

It is fiction and it can be fun to mess around with history, and that's fine. It's a Japanese mangaka writing some odd game of telephone version of US history, so I get it. But this part is deeply disturbing. There's already so much copaganda, and plenty for the Pinkertons. Really depressing that even the good parts of the manga - rare as they are - get marred by this.

Also the whole "the US Civil War was about states rights and war of Northern Aggression" was literally made up by white supremacist traitors (lol look it's Billy's hated word) to whitewash that they wanted to keep people enslaved. I mean yes, it was states' rights - the right to keep people enslaved. It's in the Confederate constitution. Funny thing about Billy's favorite word, too. The Confederacy literally are traitors lol Like the manga wants it to feel deep, but it's really not. Their opponents were -checks notes- the federal government. They attempted to forcibly leave the union and then fought the union. That's... what a traitor is. (And they lost) Also they wanted to keep people enslaved. Like the Union wasn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but like... that part of this is so swept under the rug that it's utterly bizarre (it gets one sentence and is... never brought up again). Like you want to write bishounen Billy the Kid Who Worked For Strikebreakers Fanfiction, that's fine. And it doesn't have to reconcile with who the Pinkertons are and their place in history. But it's not a comfortable read, either.

It's also fascinating about what cast was chosen. Yes, part of it is clearly the lean in the narrative towards all these military and spy agencies working together to retain power for their governments, and the Pinkertons are just there, conveniently. And like I dread to think what this story would have done with a black character, but it's interesting that Billy the Kid Who Worked For Strikebreakers was picked over any particular other well-known time-relevant cowboy-ish people, like, I don't know, Bass Reeves, who actually did work for the federal government. Sure, it'd be a bit weird to write him into the story for like why he would be in/around London, and the variable timeline doesn't quite work for his history. But you know, it's fantasyland, so why not? I would honestly love to read about Sherlock Holmes and Bass Reeves shutting down strikebreakers. That'd be cool. Much cooler than whatever nonsense was in this volume, anyway.

Maybe the conclusion will be . I can only hope.

TW/CW: suicidal thoughts

I’m still on the fence about this new arc but I am hopeful.

Volume 17 is filled with reassurances and hope. THIS IS THE FIRST VOLUME WITHOUT ANY VIOLENCE OR GORE!! What a surprise. I kinda like it? There’s no tension or drama, just comfort at the moment.

The dynamics of friendship have improved, which is wonderful. I love this reunion. As they share the happenings of the past, we will now concentrate on Sherlock's adventures in NYC during his three-year absence from home with our new character, Billy (and spoiler someone else! Wink wink). We learn about the formation of the United States, the Pinkerton National Detective Agency (which is real, I checked!), and much more!!! I love this shift as we’ve been in London for 16 volumes.

I should point out that this manga occasionally deviates from the actual historical timeframe (mentioned by the mangaka before). Therefore, it's preferable to just appreciate it despite the discrepancies (the inventions of Herder, that one scene with the undergarments hahaha etc). After all, it's a work of fiction. Volume 18 is coming tomorrow!! I can’t wait to continue. Things are looking good at the moment.

Poznajcie osobę zwaną "Bill the Kid"

With all three Moriarty brothers finally reunited, it’s time for… a dinner party. As everybody gets chummy with one another, the story turns to what Sherlock and William were up to in America.

Sometimes Moriarty is less. I applaud the series once more for finding a way to move forward after the point where it should have begged off and called it a day, but this is where I’ll be parting ways with the series.

Oh, I will miss parts of it. Herder’s current schtick of inventing (and naming) inventions that are about a century ahead of their time remains amusing. The one that he busts out in this volume is hilariously silly.

There are also the continued oblique hints about the relationship between Sherlock and William, the general nature of which could launch a dozen slashfics. Seeing them sharing an apartment is dead amusing.

Otherwise this, bluntly put, wastes a lot of time. It’s a long dinner sequence to reintroduce everybody to one another and let them interact. It’s fun, after a fashion, but it just goes on forever.

Then it pivots to the start of an American adventure with Billy the Kid, where it turns out he and Sherlock are working for the Pinkertons. Yes, those. And it really seems to love them, despite, you know, how the Pinkertons actually worked.

If the moralizing of the first part of the series was a bit heavy handed, it has nothing on Billy waxing fondly about the Second Amendment and freedom from government interference. The class struggle I could get behind. This? Eh, not so much.

It’s a bold move that it cannot pull off because there’s a lot of history that gets ignored, bowled over, or just plain changed in service to the story. Nobility dumping on the lesser classes is nice and basic. The stuff about US history it gets into here is incredibly complicated and, these days, used to justify a lot of bad actions when spin a certain way, so the series’ typical attitude is ill-suited for it.

That’s just about as much of this as I need. I don’t necessarily think it means anything bad, but the boredom plus this current arc’s apparent trajectory, I don’t much care for Billy as a character, leaves me pretty cold.

2.5 stars - I think that this truly hasn’t been a series for me for a while now. And, rather than throw money at it to see how much I can come to regret continuing on, I think I can let it go here.

I do like the series, I only wish that Moriarty would be allowed to be a bit more evil. It is funny though and brings together a lot of topics, I’m not quite enjoying the Bond theme, but that’s personal taste.

But if a filler volume...

Most of this volume was filler as the characters were all brought back together again. Towards the end they finally shift to start to discussing what happened in the missing months. Not much yet, but next volume will probably have lots to discuss.

Zanim jednak bohaterowie przejdą do poważniejszych działań, trzeba jakoś uświetnić powrót z martwych.

Siedemnasta odsłona serii to więc dawka dość spokojnej treści z odpowiednio dopasowanym humorem.

I feel like your enjoyment of about half of this volume is going to be dependent on whether you're excited to have a new American--a dare I say, painfully American--character introduced right as the entire series is drawing to a close. I really don't really understand the choice to devote so much time to introducing this character (Billy the Kidd.) Although to be honest I don't really understand many of the choices in this volume, even the ones that have nothing to do with him. In a way the "all the main character's get together for a dinner party" thing is cute, but it's beginning to feel like the story is veering too much into fanfiction of late, and the dinner part chapters don't do anything to help with that. There's not much of a plot to be had with this series anymore; it's just the characters reminiscing and telling each other how terribly fond they are of each other and whatnot. Which is decidedly cute, as I said, but when it's the only thing going on it feels like a little much. That's the sort of thing that really only works within a plot, not as the plot.
