When a frightened mother asks woodsman and tracker Tye Caine to find her missing son, he can’t say no.
The search takes him deep into the wilderness of the Cascade Mountains, where he finds a group of people who want to live a wild life. The only catch is one of them might be a killer.
If that wasn’t complicated enough, he sees visions of people he knows are dead.
Soon he finds himself on the run with no gear, no supplies, and no options. That’s familiar territory for Tye, but this time he’s terrified that any mistake will cost him the woman he loves.

I started with book 4, and having enjoyed it, set out to find the others. I got a 3 book digital set. Unfortunately there were 2 book 3's in the set. So I've missed book 2. Despite that, I enjoyed this story. There are hints about book 2 events, but this can be read as a stand alone. I just like to follow the character relationships and how they develop. So having read book 4 already, there were no real surprises on how Tye and Kaity get along. They have set up a business and take on a case to search for a missing young man. The case leads them to an encampment of survivalists where the young man had been living. He had been basically spying on his father's logging company, because it was up to no good, but there was no proof. Tye and Kaity discover the secret, and it almost leads to their deaths. The ending was very exciting, and I read long into the night to finish. I hope to read more of this series.
Yet another great instalment in this series. It's still captivating and I'm particularly enjoying how the main characters are depicted as perfectly normal people with all their foibles - no perfect heroes or heroines here, merely day-to-day folk who know how to do some things extremely well but have got no idea with some others, just like the rest of us. It's also refreshing how the developing relationship between two of the leads is developing (normal again!) and I very much enjoy the fact that the author is maintaining his ability to write genuine female characters without falling into tropes. On to number 4!
3.5 rounded up. There are proofreading errors. This is the third book in the series. It was a free kindle book, and I did not realize it was a series. It does refer back to previous events, but very briefly. It worked fine as a standalone.
I found the wilderness information interesting. The main characters are likable and they evidently continue through the books. Some of the “bad” guys were not developed as much as I hoped. There are not any real surprises, but it does have suspense, danger, and lots of tracking. It is a quick read.
Tye is an excellent tracker and just recently finished a case of a missing child. Tye has a little advantage, he sees ghosts. His new client wants him to find her missing son. After seeing the photo of her son, Tye knew her son was dead. What starts out as a simple case leads to a great adventure no one expects, The story moves quickly making it difficult to put the book down.
This is the first book by David Barbur that I have read. The book was well written and the plot was very good, and wrestled with environmental issues. It dealt with people living off the grid in the wilderness, and the hero in the book solves the murder and who is behind spoiling the environment. It was a little to wordy in parts, that stopped me from giving it 5 stars. I will definitely read another book by this author.
I really enjoyed the story and the survivalist's view... I've always loved the forest and camping but not enough to give up convenience So it was fascinating to see into a fictional characters mind.
The story got a little hard to follow in some of the drama, but I enjoyed it and couldn't put it down until I knew how it ended.
When an empire starts to crumble, what will some people do to stop the slide? Killing another human being seems to be the only way to stall the inevitable course of action.
the author keeps you guessing with intriguing clues and plot twists. not just another outdoor adventure. various human motivations and behaviours contribute to the fast paced story. thoroughly enjoyable.
I would recommend "Wild Mind" to anyone who likes a good tale that has mystery, a little romance, with a bit of action and survivalism. Mr. Barbour is a good storyteller.
The writer describes emotions well and one becomes friends with the characters quickly. Appreciation for honest values and courage, mixed with concern about environmental issues is a significant feature.
This book wasn't what I thought it would be, because it turned out to be even better. A little magic, a little mystery, a little social consciousness, a little romance. Enjoy!
I loved the power of the clear and simple prose, the tone of moral accountability, the fabulous descriptions of nature and characters' awareness of their place in it. Kudos!!
Real good read. Interesting characters and very interesting plot. Learned a lot about the folks that live off the grid in their communities. Worth your reading time..
