Llega el primer verano en Tokio desde que Mitsumi empezó el bachillerato. I adore how each book begins with Mitsumi speaking to and hoping for her family and friends back home. Like Mitsumi, I think Takamine is awesome and that she is similar to me in a few ways. Like how I frequently overwork myself on little stuff and how it's acceptable to occasionally take a chill pill. I suppose it's a thing now when I start looking for myself in characters and realise that I share some traits with all of them. Shima Kun is like a soft boy character who I want to protect, thus I want to get to know him better. Finally, we are receiving some resolution regarding his actions. Like Mika Chan, I find myself to be quite curious. Omg My favourite thing about Nao and Mitsumi's relationship is how kind and protective she is of her. I think Yuzuki is my favourite character. She's very cool and relatable.

This series has a great cast that ably support the main character Mitsumi. An important part of her life in Tokyo would be Nao, her aunt, who is her father's brother. Nao is one of the rare transexual characters in manga that is not a pervert. She's so ordinarily reliable, just what Mitsumi need. She acts as the guardian of her niece in more ways than one.

This was great volume for this series, a lot of things happened and it is never boring.

THE most PERFECT slice of life I've ever read.

The story, if you boil down to it, is really just about this regular highschool girl, and there's nothing that dramatic, so if you want me to give you a synopsis it'd probably make you not want to read it. AND YET, the author just makes you care for every character so intensely that that doesn't matter at all. Reading these pages is like hearing the stories of your closest friends, stories that, though incredibly mundane, but you nevertheless care for more deeply than anything in the world.

Man, I think I want to finish everything tonight. I can't stop thinking about Sousuke's smile and this is really a hell of a heartwarming series. Definitely wholesome!! By the way, I like Nao and Mika's tandem! Haha

The pacing is still a little too slow for me, but this volume caught me in a better mood and at least offered up some nice scenes at a zoo and a slumber party.

I liked getting to know the main character's aunt better, but I could have done without the new character from the male lead's past. The visit home was a little sleepy, but the cliffhanger (such as it is) perked me back up and made me curious to see the next volume.

FOR REFERENCE:

Contents: Scene 12. The Presidential Election Shake-Up -- Scene 13. Popularity Before Summer Break -- Scene 14. A Blistering-Hot Zoo -- Scene 15. A Complicated Summer Break -- Scene 16. A Drowsy Homecoming -- Scene 17. A Peppy End to Summer Break -- The Beauty Parlor -- The Things That Scare Us -- Afterword -- Dogsick -- Yamada -- Mika-chan -- Mukai-kun

I’m really enjoying this manga. I really like all of the characters. I know I often say that I like annoying characters and I do but it’s refreshing reading about so many characters that are just good characters, communicate well and are nice.

Things are getting a bit more serious in this volume and I’m already so invested.

With student council elections out of the way, it’s time for Mitsumi to head to the zoo. Naturally she’ll end up bringing Shima with her, but can even a zoo close the distance between them? Then it’s time for Mitsumi’s homecoming, plus a little lesson on how guilt is a hell of a drug.

The best word to describe Skip & Loafer at this point is reliable. It may not be the flashiest book going, but it’s got a strong cast and some lessons to impart and it knows how to generate decent drama without being too crazy or preachy.

Literally everybody gets a moment or two here, from Takamine, the stuffy student council girl (oh, I didn’t say president? Huh.) to Kanechika and his unending love for the arts. He’s definitely a speak before thinking type, but means well. And stay tuned for the shocking revelation from Fumi-chan!

Really the best part is the confirmation that Nao-chan, Mitsumi’s aunt, is transgender and absolutely nobody bats an eye. In fact, Nao’s unexpected relationship with Mitsumi’s would-be rival/friend Miku is absolutely the best thing in this story. It manages to be equal parts silly and sweet.

If Mitsumi’s problem remains that her reach exceeds her grasp, her solution definitely seems to be ‘keep walking until you can grasp it. She definitely got in over her head at the start, but by this volume you can see her constantly learning and in motion.

Which makes a nice contrast to Shima, who turns out to be a bit of a wreck behind his carefree facade. He’s definitely lashed out before, but he really seems like he’s bottling a lot that’s going to explode at some point.

Beyond his complicated family life, it turns out that he was very good friends with a model once, but one who just bounced back from an old scandal. In a swerve, but a believable one, Shima somehow caused this scandal, either through enabling her or peer pressure.

As a consequence, Shima’s stuck mired in guilt, which this girl is more than happy to use against him to make sure he’s miserable and unable to fully enjoy his life. It’s a stark contrast to the way he’s able to enjoy spending time with Mitsumi (not fully, but he can at least not hate it or himself for a bit) and he’s well aware that this is destroying him but can’t yet let it go.

It’s a really interesting way to take this - she’s not a rival, since Shima doesn’t want much to do with her aside from what he sees as an obligation, but she is 100% the biggest obstacle in the path of the series’ primary romantic pairing. And Mitsumi doesn’t even know it! It’s actually a pretty smart reworking of this trope.

The zoo date, the sleepover the girls have, the delightfully mixed personalities in Mitsumi’s girl gang, the triumphant return of Mitsumi to her hometown that’s an especially nice story of not leaving behind what’s important to you (as if she ever would), the pain of losing something that IS important to you. Lots of good work here means there’s not much to complain about.

4 stars - my only real gripe is that nothing really grabs me here and makes me go ‘wow’. I suspect the rather underwhelming art is part of the problem, but this book keeps on doing strong work and doesn’t need to be loud about it, really, just quietly confident.

This series is so comforting to read and has a very nostalgic feel to it, at least for someone whose high school days are long gone. The characters and relationships are very well fleshed out and develop interestingly, the main character is very awkward and so easy to love, and there are many funny moments, presented through a slice-of-life narrative. Oh and the art! The art is absolutely stunning. I can’t wait to read more.

As I continue with this series I’m realizing it is not really a “standout” manga, however, it is increasingly wholesome and one I can’t help but feel pure bliss while reading.

For this volume in particular, I really enjoyed the scenes with Mika-Chan and Nao-Chan and hope we get to see more of them together! The zoo scenes and the sleepover with the gals was super cute too!

so so cute!! I love seeing more about Shima and I'm so intrigued to see what he is hiding...he secretly seems so sad and lonely so I'm so happy Mitsumi is such a good friend to him!!

this is such a realistic characterization of teenagers and being in high-school without feeling cliche or over-exaggerated.

Mitsumi and Shima's "date" at the zoo was sooo cute!!!

The friendships are what is making this manga so enjoyable. Seeing Mitsumi take baby steps to find out her life and just find out who she is such a fun time. I just wish we got a better read on Shima. It seems like something happened in his past, but all we are getting are breadcrumbs.

I am hooked on this series, clearly from the fact that I can’t stop reading it. It has been such a comforting read and the perfect distressor after a long work day. I am so excited to continue with this series even though it is ongoing.

This was a great volume! I love how the girls are getting closer, and I really enjoy how we're getting to learn more about Nao-chan! I like her relationship with Egashira. I also really like how Egashira's insecurities are coming to light and how that impacts her relationships with others. Might I see a comphet storyline with her in the future??? I can only hope! I relate to her so much - "being with someone special will make me special." I hope she realizes she's special enough without being with someone she doesn't even like. Poor Shima :( I've never seen the impacts of being a child star in a manga/anime before, so this is really interesting!

Yep, still loving it. First dates? Maybe. Cuteness is here. Returning back home, bit awkward and all, but seeing people you love and care for again. This is the wholesome manga I need in my life right now.
