There has already been an unfathomable cost. And there is more yet to pay.
Gilderan has fallen. Li’or, Hashkan, and Emond barely escaped with their lives.
Scarred and with more questions than they started with, the battle-hardened trio arrives in Pinescar looking for the true power behind Ordelieus’ short, but violent, reign. All the while, the Fabric around them continues to destabilize, releasing horrors beyond anything they dared to imagine.
Gemni Sy’ing smuggles herself from Rak-Shai to Anagovia, where being found would sign her death warrant. Bound by a prophecy written in the stars, she must find the only people who can fight the coming darkness and bring them back with her to face their fate.
Meanwhile, worlds away, a civilization teeters on the brink of extinction with no hope of salvation as their world unravels around them. Could the arrival of a group of blood-painted strangers be their last chance for escape?
A worthy sequel to the excellent first book in this series, When the Threads Unravel takes our heroes to new places and introduces new threats. Li’or, Hashkan, and Emond are still there, and Emond is still my hero! I really like Gemni, a new POV character as well.
It is about the same length as the first book, but the story feels like it's so much more!
The stakes are higher, we have some additions to the group of heroes and also to the wonderfully detailed creatures that they have to bring down.
Love the pacing, love the trust in readers that not every section has to have the name of the pov, reader can understand while reading, that's treating your audience maturely!
I'm in love with Sam's writing. These books have been perfect! I can't wait for the epic conclusion coming this year.
There are a few reasons why I really enjoyed this book, but mainly, it's because it is just a damn good adventure with an interesting cast of characters.
I truly liked this book, and here's why:
I read a lot of fantasy books that are usually the first in a series, but what makes me continue onto the next book, is the characters and their growth. While the first book, When the World Starts to Fray, did the heavy lifting of introducing our heroes, faults and all, it wasn't until the very end that I felt invested enough in them that I wanted to continue to follow their adventures. I felt a need to keep reading their journey.
Not to mention book 1 ended on a massive cliffhanger...
But the characters need to continue growing in each book, and we aren't disappointed in book 2. Both of the main characters continue that trajectory we were left with at the end of the first book, not only growing as individuals, but as part of a team. I mean, who doesn't like a reluctant long-lived elf realizing she is allowed to have human friends??? And then the cocky, fresh-out-of-wizard -school brat finally begins to realized he isn't as great as he originally thought, and that's what makes him great. Well, not the whole team grows, because the warrior stays the warrior/comic relief, but we didn't need him to grow much, he's loved just the way he is!
To be fair, another thing that always makes me want to continue a series is expanding the cast and the world, and When the Threads Unravel did not disappoint! Not only are we introduced to a brand new POV character, we are transported to another land only hinted at in the first book. I eat this stuff up. I love when authors have more to their worlds than just one land, especially when fantasy offers such unlimited mystique. This new POV character and her land add so much more complexity and scale to this series.
And then, BAM, new world altogether! For real, this quest brought our heroes to another world, a world completely destroyed by the evil that is permeating their world. I love when we get storylines like this, it not only gives our heroes more opportunities for growth, but allows them to truly become the hero they are meant to be.
Also, the new bad beasties introduced in this other world are D&D level exquisite. Chef's kiss.
One thing that also draws me is the skill of the author in weaving a tale. It certainly did not go unnoticed that Ms. Parrish's skill and style for the craft really grew between the first book and the second. It's just great to see when authors grow alongside their creations!
As I said with the first book, for anyone who loves classic epic fantasy quests, this book is for you! Can't wait for the next one, I know it'll be a blast!
When the Threads Unravel is a fantastic continuation of the series, picking up right where When the World Starts to Fray left off. The world-building is incredible, especially with the introduction of the other world that the beloved characters and their new friends travel to. The bleakness of the other realm and the surprising discovery of the elf colony there were standout moments, adding depth and intrigue to the plot.
The story’s stakes feel even higher, as the fabric between worlds continues to weaken and Anagovia faces the looming threat of destruction. The tension builds well, and the ending leaves you eager to see how the group will rally against the monsters and repair the damage.
Overall, it’s a compelling read with rich detail and a thrilling sense of adventure. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

Sam Parrish has definitely grown as an author hence the book is very well written. Absolutely a page turner. I couldn’t put it down! I personally don’t like reading books in a series until the series is complete but the cliff hanger at the end of the first book made me bite the bullet and read it. The original characters are still all awesome and you really feel like you are in their party as well. The new characters are great too. The book is very immersive and it feels like you are right there with them on their epic quest to save their world. I can’t wait for book three and the conclusion to this magical series.
Honestly? This was so great! I just LOVE all the characters, ESPECIALLY Emond! He had me LOL'ing and I kept saying "I swear he better not die- I am at work and can not be crying off my makeup in front of people."
This whole book was fast paced, with tons and tons of action almost the entire time. I can't say enough good things about this. I can not WAIT until the end of the trilogy to see how things finally wrap up.
I'm also excited to see what else Sam has up her sleeve, cuz WOW. Sometimes I forgot I was at work because of how descriptive and captivating everything was and I just felt like I was in Anagovia with them all. I would've died right away, but you get it.
While I did enjoy it, it has the issue of many series I've read - you know there's another book coming but the current one, the characters go through the unimaginable/impossible. What's going to be left for the finale?
