A very informative and compelling book on the Art of painting. It clarified many questions I had before : how to "look" at the paintings, how to get the message that the artist wants to transfer, and what is the meaning of the so called modern art? Do all works contain hidden symbols and how can we reveal them ? The book is written in a vivid and compelling style, it has many paintings which are representing specific styles and which are all explained. After I had finished the book I started reading it again, and I felt the urge to have more on the subject.
In the Introduction of his book, the author states that: "...this book will give you an insight into the pivotal themes and discussions that make up the subject of art history. Whether you are a general reader, a gallery lover, a student, or are simply inspired by art ... you will come away from this book with a stronger underpinning in your ability to look at and interpret works of Western art, cementing a foundation for you to take your own passion and studies further".
Well, I think Mr. Christopher Jones has succeeded.

Enjoyed the layout of the book and how it made it very easy to understand the evolution or history of art with its different periods. Good short book to get introduced to art.
