¡Viva la Cuba!

Fun and sex and more fun and sex in Havana.

Our author is Daniel Chavarría, quite the colorful guy - a Uruguayan revolutionary, writer and translator who arrived in Castro's Cuba as a young man with two lifelong passions: literature and prostitutes.

Regarding literature, Daniel Chavarría spent a career as a professor of Latin and Greek. As for prostitutes, well, in addition to racking up oodles of firsthand experience, prostitutes are a prime attraction in his novels.

Which brings us to Adios Muchachos, a novel featuring Alicia, a special kind of prostitute.

It's the 1990s and Cuba in the post-Soviet Russia era doesn't hold a bright future, and that's understatement. The entire Cuban economy limps along, held together with bandaids. What's a girl to do, especially a beautiful, curvaceous lass who wants to land a rich, foreign husband to take her far from Cuba?

Alicia devises the bicycle stunt, a slick maneuver concocted by an actual college student in one of Daniel Chavarría's classes back in 1994. Here's the trick: dress like a young, fresh college student complete with drafting paper in a knapsack (ah, an architecture student!), pedal your bicycle (with the seat raised so as to display the luscious cheeks of your ass) in front of a luxury car of what must be a rich foreign guy and just at the right moment put pressure on the specially constructed pedal so it breaks off and you take a tumble. The rich guy stops, puts your broken bicycle in the trunk and offers you a lift. And you're off to step two (getting details of his background), leading to step three (seduction), step four (bed) and step five (his offers of lots of material goods now and in the future).

Fortunately, Alicia has a key ally in her quest for a man holding a pot of foreign gold: her mother Margarita, a shrewd woman who happens to be a superb cook and a mom made all the wiser since poor Margarita was forced to live by her wits and scheming when Alicia's father disappeared soon after the birth of their daughter.

All goes according to plan; Alicia has enticed an entire string of Johns who have added to the family wealth - new refrigerators, new air conditioners, et al. - since sweet, college student Alicia vehemently refuses to take their cash (What, sir, do you take me for a whore?).

Out pedaling once again, Alicia's hoax snares one Victor King, a superwealthy Canadian businessman. Events move apace but Victor isn't all he appears to be. At this point the plot thickens and sizzles like the Cuban gourmet steak specialty Ropa Vieja. Then a certain happening forces Victor and Alicia to team up to land a phenomenally huge stack of greenbacks. Now as you turn the pages, you can really savor your spicy Ropa Vieja.

I dare not say anything more and thus spill the congri (that's beans in the world of Caribbean cuisine, Gringo). Such an intricately constructed tale and so much fun to read. Thanks, Danny C!

Adios Muchachos contains a strong element of mystery. And when it comes to his taste in mystery novels, Daniel Chavarría reports: "Most mystery novels are junk while manor-house whodunits like those of Agatha Christie are about as challenging and relevant as a crossword puzzle."

Adios Muchachos could be used as a case study in Cuban history and sociology, as per this example -

"If the Soviet Union had not caved in, there would be no Special Period in Cuba. Alicia would have finished her studies at the university. She would certainly have gotten herself the right kind of husband: somebody in the nomenklatura, a technocrat, or maybe an artist, which had been her childhood dream.
But in 1994, when the crisis was affecting their stomachs, their feet, and even their minds, Alicia's patriotism could stretch no further, so she decided to become a whore."

Every author puts out a clunker and this is one of those. A story about a prostitute who has a unique way of plying her trade in Communist Cuba. The story got pretty weird after a bit, and the best thing about this book is the jacket cover which displays her assets proudly!

Can we all be adults here? Yes, this is raunchy, non-morally-uplifting, unrealistic and just plain dumb. But it's also a really fun way to kill a few hours in a fantasy world in which cleverness is rewarded, jerkiness is punished and women are gorgeous and oh-so-available.

I actually had the extra-lurid cover art on my version of this book. I was crushed when, two thirds of the way through, I lost it at the gym. Whoever recovered it probably had no idea what they were in for, but I'll bet they had fun, too.

I don't for one moment believe that this is a useful guide to Cuban life and culture, but that's hardly the point with a book like this. Bottom line: Fun way to kill a few hours.

Εδώ και χρόνια έχω δεχτεί πίεση να διαβάσω έστω και κάτι του Daniel Chavarrìa. Ξέρω ότι το βιβλίο "Αν με ξαναδείτε, γράφτε μου" (εκδόσεις Opera, 1998) απέχει παρασάγγας από το να θεωρηθεί το αριστούργημά του, αλλά το μέγεθός του και το περιεχόμενό του φάνηκε ιδανικό για καλοκαιρινό ανάγνωσμα.
Ως Κουβανός, ο Chavarrìa, τοποθετεί την ιστορία αυτού του σύντομου μυθιστορήματος στην Αβάνα. Πρωταγωνίστρια είναι μια μουλάτα χινετέρα (όπως λέγεται στην Κούβα ένα ιδιαίτερο είδος σεξεργάτριας) που εκμεταλλεύεται με επιτυχία τα σωματικά και πνευματικά προσόντα που τις χαρίστηκαν. Πρωταγωνιστής επίσης, είναι ένας Καναδός όπου για να ξεφύγει από το κάπως ποινικό του παρελθόν έχει βρεθεί στην Κούβα. Ενώ φαινομενικά όλα πάνε καλά στην ιδιαίτερη σχέση που έχουν συνάψει, κάτι πάει πολύ στραβά και προσπαθούν να σώσουν τα τομάρια τους, με την ελπίδα ότι θα έχουν και κάποιο κέρδος.
Η γραφή του Chavarrìa είναι εξαιρετική. Μεστή, απλή, ρεαλιστική (αν και η ιστορία κάποιες φορές ξεφεύγει αρκετά από τον ρεαλισμό) και είναι εμφανές ότι είναι ένας πολύ σημαντικός συγγραφέας.
Σίγουρα δεν πρόκειται για κάποιο λογοτεχνικό αριστούργημα, αλλά είναι ένα βιβλίο που διαβάζεται μονορούφι και προσφέρει μερικές πολύ ευχάριστες ώρες ανάγνωσης.

Η ιστορία δύο φτωχοδιάβολων που αγωνίζονται απεγνωσμένα να πιάσουν την καλή.
Ο θηλυκός, η Αλίσια, ζει και αναπνέει στην Κούβα και αποτελεί το άπιαστο όνειρο του αρσενικού πληθυσμού που την αντικρίζει και το χειροπιαστό όνειρο μιας πολύ προσεκτικά διαλεγμένης μερίδας του. Χάρμα οφθαλμών, έχει ανάγει την πουτανιά σε τέχνη. Με βοηθό και μέντορα την ίδια της τη μαμά, στήνει μια ολόκληρη μηχανή αποπλάνησης ματσωμένων τουριστών και μη, που της αποφέρει τα προς το ζην χωρίς να την ακολουθεί η ρετσινιά της χινετέρας. Καπάτσα και νοήμων, είναι σε θέση να αναδεικνύει τα προσόντα της, ιππεύοντας ένα ποδήλατο στους δρόμους της Αβάνας και κόβοντας την ανάσα σε ότι έχει πουλί.
Το αρσενικό alter ego της Αλίσια είναι ο Χουανίτο - Τζορτζ, που δεν φέρνει σε Κλούνεϊ αλλά σε Αλέν Ντελόν. Αρχίζοντας να σιτεύει και με το βάρος ενός ύποπτου (για απατεωνίες) παρελθόντος, δίκην τροχοπέδης για το όποιο μέλλον του, γίνεται αρχικά ο επιβήτορας της Αλίσια και στη συνέχεια ο εργοδότης της. Το έξυπνο δίδυμο προσπαθεί φιλότιμα να ξεφύγει από το πεπρωμένο του αλλά είναι άτυχο. Πάντα θα υπάρχει ένα outsider που μπορεί να σου κλέψει τη δόξα, στην προκείμενη και το χρήμα.
Ευφυές, γρήγορο, με ζωντανές περιγραφές, με χιούμορ ενίοτε μαύρο, με ανατροπές αλλά και πιπεράτες σκηνές.
Η πλοκή επαληθεύει την παροιμία "το έξυπνο πουλί από τη μύτη πιάνεται". Αλλά ευτυχώς, οι δύο ήρωες είναι φαρδόψυχοι και το φινάλε τους βρίσκει να πορεύονται όπως όπως προς τα μελλοντικά τους σχέδια. Ευτυχώς επίσης, που δεν έμαθαν την ευτυχή για άλλον, κατάληξη των σχεδίων τους.
Θα επιθυμούσα να γνωρίζω την πηγή του εξωφύλλου. Ενδιαφέρουσα φωτογραφία που οι εκδόσεις δεν γράφουν την πηγή της. Πολύ καλή μετάφραση και επιμέλεια. Προσεγμένη έκδοση.

I had purchased this edition, along with the Noir series, from Akashic Books, back in 2015. I got laid off from my state position last September & upon returning home, I thought that the title might be appropriate for my state of mind. I have to admit that I was not completely taken with it at first, but I hung in and was richly rewarded by my decision at the end. Filled with wild, wondrous, sensual & ravenous characters, it made for a worthy read. I just regret not having been more diligent about my Goodreads account until recently, but I am trying to bring it current.

Dobijcie mnie, bo mnie się podobało. :D

Fabuła – w dużej mierze przewidywalna. Zwrotów akcji – brak. „Momenty” – niekiedy tak na siłę udziwnione, że aż żałosne. A mimo to… nie da się odłożyć książki przed przeczytaniem ostatniej strony!

Wydaje mi się, że najmocniejszą stroną „Adios Muchachos” są bohaterowie. Kolorowi, na swój sposób szaleni, a Alicia i jej sposób pojmowania życia oraz „biznesu” powalają na kolana. Do tego dochodzi wyzwolona mamuśka naszej rowerowej dziwki i szef Victora, który też okazuje się być całkiem ciekawą postacią. Panie, takie rzeczy tylko na Kubie!

Jako że pewnie całkiem spore grono użytkowników zastanawia się nad przeczytaniem tej książki tylko dla scen erotycznych, informuję, że to całkiem nie tak. ;) Jest ich dosyć sporo (zwłaszcza na początku), niektóre są wręcz chore (paradoksalnie - jednocześnie nudne, przynajmniej moim zdaniem), ale większość ma swoje wytłumaczenie fabularne. Opisy raczej nie mają na celu pobudzenia wyobraźni czytelnika, bo są „suche”. Znaczna ich część przedstawia stosunek jako czynność stricte mechaniczną.

Co do wątku kryminalnego… No cóż. Więcej tu komedii niż napięcia. Nie zmienia to jednak faktu, ze przyjemnie się to czyta. Nawet, jeśli wiadomo, jak całość się skończy. A wiadomo. Chyba, że ktoś wcześniej w ogóle nie miał do czynienia z kryminałami, pod żadną postacią. Tak czy siak, książkę scharakteryzowałabym bardziej jako komedię kryminalną niż thriller „pornologiczny” (bo takiż właśnie neologizm zrodził się w pewnym momencie w mojej głowie). Mało tego. Wydaje mi się, że na podstawie książki mógłby powstać całkiem przyjemny film. Nie byłoby to arcydzieło, ale obraz trzymałby poziom powyżej przeciętnego.

Na koniec kilka słów o okładce. To nie jest tak, Drodzy Panowie, że tylko Wasze oko ciągnie, o nie. ;) Zauważyłam, że w empiku bardzo często przyciągała też uwagę pań, i to w różnym wieku. Ja powiem tylko jedno – fajnie się na to patrzy, ale mam nadzieję, że to photoshop. Bo jeśli nie, to właśnie pojawiło się w moim życiu nieznane mi dotąd zjawisko – kompleksy. :D

As my friend JC said after reading this, "Not enough ass biting." There is ass biting and other fun sex stuff just maybe not enough to drag you though this cuba based mystery thriller. That said it is a quick and fun read, probably a good way to pass a transcontinental flight.

Bardzo przyjemna lektura! Czy to przez klimat kubańskiej Hawany, lejącego się z nieba gorąca, czy też Alicii, ponętnej "rowerzystki" łowiącej bogatych amantów na swój numer "z urwanym pedałem rowerowym" autor wciąga nas w historię, która choć z pozoru banalna, pochłania czytelnika bez reszty.

Autor prowadzi nas przez karty powieści malując historię przy użyciu dużej dawki humoru, tej niesamowitej, rozrywkowej narracji, co częściowo narzuca nam odbiór historii, jako luźnej. Nie natkniemy się tutaj na żadne dramaty, czy nieszczęśliwe historie. I choć w wielu miejscach internetu spotkałem się z opisami tego tytułu typu; kryminał, sensacja, erotyk itp. powieść ta żadną z nich nie jest w całości, ale zawiera elementy każdej po trochę. Jest intryga (choć od połowy książki), są wyraziste postacie (to lubię!), wreszcie główna bohaterka Alicia, piękna, zgrabna, "kobieca". Autor mocno to podkreśla przy każdej możliwej okazji pisząc o pośladkach układających się na siodełku rowerowym i podczas jazdy jakby żyjących swoim życiem, to działa na wyobraźnię, szczególnie męskiej części czytelniczej gawiedzi. I w końcu tło całej historii, czyli Kuba, jej zręcznie przemycone wstawki polityczno historyczne, i niesamowity klimat, który choć nie gra pierwszych skrzypiec - to daje się odczuć czytelnikowi.

Fabularnie, jak pisałem na wstępie, jest to powieść i złożona i prosta. Daniel Chavarria nie trzyma się sztywno jakiegoś kanonu, po prostu snuje swoją opowieść, która, jak w życiu, zawiera i seks (dużo, i owszem, ale nie wulgarnie! Momentami wręcz zabawnie) i sensację (ten stres życia codziennego, a jeszcze na Kubie!) oraz oczywiście elementy kryminału - no dobrze, nie co dzień zdarzają nam się zwłoki w mieszkaniu. Powiedziałbym, że płynnie przechodzi z zabawnej komedii
o lekkim zabarwieniu erotycznym do kryminalno-sensacyjnej historii.

Powieść raczej nie z tych skomplikowanych, górnolotnych, o fabule i intrydze misternie skonstruowanej, splecionej niczym kable od słuchawek wyjęte z kieszeni, ale prosta, w miarę niedługa - bardzo dobra, do czystego relaksu. Koniec końców, naprawdę kibicowałem Alicii i jej kompanowi. Do szczerego polecenia!

Σχεδόν πέντε χρόνια πέρασαν από τότε που διάβασα το Όλα εδώ πληρώνονται του Ντανιέλ Τσαβαρία (που έγραψε μαζί με τον Χούστο Βάσκο), εννοείται πως δεν θυμάμαι πολλές λεπτομέρειες από την πλοκή, θυμάμαι όμως ότι ήταν ένα δυνατό αστυνομικό νουάρ και ότι μου είχε αφήσει καλή αίσθηση. Πριν από λίγο τελείωσα το πιο πολυδιαβασμένο βιβλίο του συγγραφέα, που είναι το δεύτερο βιβλίο του που διαβάζω, το οποίο θα χαρακτήριζα σαν ένα ωραίο παλπ μυθιστόρημα, με όλα τα κλισέ και τα καλούδια του είδους. Στο οπισθόφυλλο δεν υπάρχει κάποια συγκεκριμένη περίληψη, οπότε ας γράψω μια μικρή εγώ, χωρίς πολλές λεπτομέρειες: Πρωταγωνίστρια είναι η νεαρή Αλίσια, μια γκομενάρα που ψωνίζει άντρες με το ποδήλατό της, ακολουθώντας ένα σίγουρο σχέδιο. Δεν είναι Χινετέρας, το τονίζει αυτό, απλώς βγάζει χρήμα περνώντας καλά. Δεν είναι κακή κοπέλα. Μια μέρα συναντά τον Χουανίτο, ή αλλιώς Τζον Κινγκ, για τον οποίο θ'αρχίσει να δουλεύει βγάζοντας περισσότερο χρήμα και περνώντας ακόμα καλύτερα. Κάποια στιγμή οι δυο τους, εντελώς τυχαία, θα βρουν μια ευκαιρία για να βγάλουν μπόλικο παραδάκι. Θα πάνε όμως όλα κατ'ευχήν; Όπως κάθε pulp fiction μυθιστόρημα που σέβεται τον εαυτό του, έχει κάποιες τρελές καταστάσεις, σεξ, έγκλημα, ανήθικους χαρακτήρες και ιδιαίτερα γρήγορο ρυθμό. Δεν διαβάζεται γρήγορα μόνο επειδή είναι μικρό, αλλά γιατί, πρώτον, είναι πολύ ωραία γραμμένο, με χιούμορ και ζωντανούς διαλόγους και, δεύτερον, γιατί η ιστορία είναι ενδιαφέρουσα και αρκετά ελαφριά, που δεν σου κουράζει το μυαλό. Η βαθμολογία του στο Goodreads είναι σχετικά μέτρια (3.38 στα 5 με λιγότερες από 200 αξιολογήσεις), προσωπικά όμως μου άρεσε και γι'αυτό παίρνει δίκαια τέσσερα αστεράκια από μένα.

When I read a few reviews on this book I had to buy it. I found this book to be a great read, in fact, I had a hard time putting the book down. This characters in the book are well developed and the story line was as well. I don't want to ruin the story for those reading my review but I will say you will not be disappointed reading this author. As a matter of fact I'm going to find out what other books he wrote so I can read them. I plan to follow this author in the future.

Kuubaan sijoittuva veijariromaani, jossa on ylitsepursuavan paljon mautonta seksiä ja häthätää kyhätty miljoonalunnasvaatimushanke. Stereotyyppinen naisvartalon kuvailu mieskatseella ja muutenkin sangen tunkkainen tunnelma eivät oikein innosta uppoutumaan tarinaan. Hämmentävää, että kirja on vain 18 vuotta vanha, mutta niin, tämä on vähän tällainen reliikki vanhasta maailmasta.

Con 170 página, 44 capítulos distribuidos en 3 partes + 1 epilogo, se trata de una novelita simpaticona y muy alusiva que flirtea con el género policial y con las cape story. Con una economía de personajes, unos diálogos livianos y naturales, y una narración precisa, Chavarría construye una trama de giros, trampas y enredos en el contexto de la apertura de Cuba a la industria turística internacional en los años noventa. Es la metáfora del mundo caribeño de entonces como aventura de submarinismo exploratorio y vouyerista en la procura del descubrimiento de la gran fortuna, cabalgando accidentes entre componendas y escenas de un erotismo muy bien manejado. Es casi una película. Final inesperado que guarda dentro de sí una fábula con moraleja: siempre puede haber un pez más grande tras de ti.

This is a very silly and somewhat erotic book. The plot is utterly unbelievable. The characters are fairly ridiculous. There are parts that make zero sense.

It is a very stupid book. I enjoyed it quite a lot. Perfect vacation reading. I plowed through it speedily.

It reminds me of the pulp trash of the 1950s. Sex, crime, and way over the top. Low brow in the extreme. Much of the writing is a quick summary of events just to keep the plot moving.

If you like dumb slutty silly books, I guess read this? I'd be curious to see what else this author came up with.

A fun read. Each of the characters has a gimmick. The prostitute has an elaborate process for luring customers while riding an old bicycle. The businessman is obsessed with an elaborate tourism scheme. The novel has so many twists and reveals it moves very fast. Everything is neatly wrapped up in the end. Fun characters, wild plot, several sex passages and a crime will keep you interested and laughing.

Quite entertaining, if a bit silly and over the top (maybe that's the point?). Cartoon characters and unlikely situations, but a rather clever plot that holds ones attention to the end. A mix of soft porn, Cuban spice, and a bit of mystery. Apparently it won an Edgar Allen Poe prize, which is a bit surprising.

1.5 rounded up. According to the author's notes Daniel Chavarría had two interests: classical literature and 'whores'. I couldn't find traces of classical literature and the treatment of the 'whores' was Hanna-Barberesque and could have been written by a non-violent incel.

The epilogue is unusually long and could be read instead.

Les scènes de sexe font certes partie de l’histoire mais leur description plus qu’explicite n’apporte rien et dénote une vision bien machiste.

L’écriture n’a rien d’exceptionnel mais le récit est plaisant, notamment dans son dernier tiers où l’on se prend au suspense.

Cuban setting is just a pretext for a rather predictable story. Pity, because had the author chosen to take actually take advantage of the setting and era, something interesting might have come of it.
