This charming short story is the novelette about the life, love, and backstory of Odrin the reever. Years before becoming Amaris’s surrogate father, Odrin is shaped by the love of a woman, and the loss that drove him to join a band of assassins.
A Night Without Whispers is a part of the Gyrradin universe and meant to be read after The Night and Its Moon, Book One.
This novella is only available as an ebook outside of the US and Canada. If you live within the US or Canada, please see the Barnes & Noble exclusive of The Night and Its Moon for access to Odrin's novella.
Fantasy author with an M.A. in Folklore, who loves to take pictures, eat french fries, and live my life as an all-around creative forest nymph! I'm so excited to bring you with me on my journey as I step out of our everyday lives and into the new fantasy world within The Night and Its Moon fantasy series!
I wrote these books for an audience of one, and that audience was me. I wanted to see bi representation, love, mental health struggles, religious trauma, and overcoming the of obstacles that I needed to be modeled in my own life. At the end of the day I'm so proud of myself for creating the series that I'd always hoped I could read, and I hope someone is able to connect with them in a way that I have.
I'm so proud of this novella. It was a love story that broke my heart, but the one I needed to tell. I think it's important for creators to be proud of their work, and want to give it five stars because I believe in it as a piece of art.
While it can be read it as a stand-alone piece (and most of the terminology should be discernible from context), it is meant to be read following Book One of the TNAIM series as a world-building backstory. I hope it means as much to you as it does to me. <3
This is a story that continues to sit with me days after reading it. The descriptions are gorgeous and sensitive and deliberate and the pacing is patient - slower than her other work but beautiful for this piece because we know, from the start, that this will end in tragedy (you should DEFINITELY read The Night & Its Moon before picking up this novelette). And there is great weight that makes everything heavy with importance. It's a short story but with heart that makes it feel much longer. A perfect addition to TNAIM series.
Dit is een super zielig boek maar wel erg mooi. Andere novelles van deze serie vond ik soms een beetje saai omdat ze veel op de emotionele aspecten focuste maar dat ergerde me hier niet.
The story is not only beautifully written but absolutely soul-aching. The way the author describes the places, characters and their feelings envelopes you completely and takes you out of wherever you are just to place you in the middle of this world. I can’t think of a better word than “artful” to describe this story.
I am literally so biased I will never be able to write a bad review for Piper. But this book gave Odrin some really beautiful background into why he is the way he is. Basically when I finish this book I was traumatized.
Beautifully crafted with environments you can picture and emotions you can feel. This read is beautiful and breaking. If you loved the night and & its moon you are most definitely going to love getting Odrin's story.
I love a wee novella in a book series, some of my favourite character development happens in these and this short heartbreaking insight to Odrin is right up there.
Just found out about these novellas yesterday ya heard. Odrin didn't really get his time to shine in the books but his character's importance was in the paternal role he played for Amaris. Getting to read about him and his lost family was actually heartbreaking. Last line hit us with: "I was supposed to be your guardian angel,' he said with a choked voice, touching the iron and closing his eyes. 'Now you'll have to be mine." Nah man I'm not built for that kind of shit.
Piper CJ has quickly become one of my all-time favorite writers! Her stories are a blend of action and adventure, rich in-depth characters, romance with some spiciness, and the type of fantasy I enjoy reading. If you haven't picked up one of her books, you should. You will not be disappointed.
Absolutely tore my heart. Read directly after finishing The Night and It's Moon. Piper truly has a way with words that reaches right into me and touches the deepest parts of my soul. A fantastic, if tragic, tale.

Somehow interesting to read, adding slightly more depth to odrons character in the night and it's moon. Just not sure if these roughly 40 pages should even be considered a book (and.. Sold as that). Underwhelming!
Odrin seemed like a simple man with strong conviction but to learn about his past and sorrows was interesting. It opens up a whole new way of seeing the man. This is short but I loved it
This was okay but at 51 pages including a chapter from another book there’s only so much there and it wasn’t enough to make me run to get the book and jump in.
This short story is really quite beautiful, and Piper has outdone herself again. Filling in a part of Orrin’s backstory makes his relationship with Amaris make so much more sense! And it makes their companionship that much sweeter. 🤍 definitely read with a box of tissues.
when I tell you I cried myself to sleep for FOUR NIGHTS OVER THIS, ISTG THIS BOOK FREAKING HIT ME WITH A MCLAREN AT 100 MILES PER HOUR.... and I wanted it to happen again.
