A new threat on the horizon… A faraway world to explore… A new technology to employ… An opportunity that can’t be ignored…
The Free Ship Aurora has taken on a new responsibility; To protect even those who do not ask to be protected. But to do so, they will have to take an ambitious, against incredible odds.
"Not the Hill to Die On" is the 4th episode in Part 3 of the Frontiers Fringe Worlds.
Born in 1960 and raised on an overdose of television, NASA, and science fiction, Ryk Brown has worked as a cook, rock guitarist, stage lighting technician, and paramedic. He currently resides in Northern California with his wife, daughter, and cat. By day he fixes computers, and by night he creates stories. Having spent his entire life "thinking stuff up", the advent of digital publishing has finally given him an excuse to write it all down and share it with others. ("Others" meaning someone other than his poor wife and daughter.) A long-time fan of all things science and space, his goal is to write and publish an on-going series of sci-fi adventures. To be set in his own version of humanity's future, his characters will explore the vast reaches of the galaxy, and perhaps even the universe. He invites you all to join him on this journey through his vivid imagination.
Ryk Brown keeps getting better with each book. His writing skills and storytelling ability is now truly professional. It has been such a pleasure to see the improvement book after book. I could hardly put this book down. Unfortunately, I now have to wait for the next book in the series.
I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is nine hours and six minutes. Jeffrey Kafer does an excellent job narrating the series.
So 'not the hill we die on' which hill is it? They don't mention that phrase again until about half way through the book then you wonder is THIS the hill? Does that mean this op isn't going to succeed? There are so many ops going on at once that it's almost like watching a juggling match. Can they all successfully work out? Which one are they going to abandon? Are they going to let one go or does it work so it is 'not the hill we die on'?
Ryk does it once again you are thankful the books aren't any longer so you can get off the edge of your seat and pay attention once again to the family who have apparently been muttering something about food. I'm busy in Space can't they see?
Survival in the future, way out there, isn't easy as Capt. Nathan Scott has learned. To get things done, he must rely on others and sometimes take what he needs to continue his mission. In "Not the Hill We Die On," author Ryk Brown makes darn sure Nathan's goals of freedom and prosperity don't fade. Nathan still wants humankind to have the ability to make their own decisions without the interference by artificial intelligence that is all but a given in this future Alliance-dominated universe. He insists that those who want to choose their own way of life get a chance to live it peacefully. It's a big order, but one Nathan seems to be able to handle. At least, he tries. He'd get nowhere without the help of his former allies and a bunch of new ones who can't believe he really is the Nathan Scott of history. In this episode of the Frontiers Saga Part 3 the goal is the expand the fleet. But the plan is a little crazy. Maybe a lot crazy. Still, if anybody can do it, he can.
I’d like to explain what I’m talking about in my title. Ryk draws you into to this fantasy world with characters who seem like old friends, and won’t let you out until he leaves you hanging…hanging to know what happened to your best friends and the cause you care about. As always, it’s the character development and the relationships between the characters that makes you want to jump into the conversation yourself. Well, I guess I’ll spend the next several months pondering when the next addition comes out and trying to find something else to work on while I wait for the next 2 days of guilty pleasure.
As a one of book, it's 4*, possibly close to. 5, but as part of a series it's at best 3. It's the same old storyline, just set in a different time and place. I have no idea how many books have now been in the Frontiers saga,.I'm guessing close to 20 and this must be the 3rd time this storyline has been iterated Yes Nathan is lucky, yes he instills loyalty in his crew and yes everyone else always falls into line with his plans. But his enemies cannot be this consistently neive and stupid to never work out what he is up to or how to stop him, especially if he keeps doing the same thing over and over again
It is amazing that Ryk Brown can continue to make the story more captivating after 34 books. The new environment the crew of the Aurora finds itself in for this third story arc offers incredible opportunities for all kinds of new storylines. I'm looking forward to where the author's imagination takes us next.
Finally it’s nice to see some things go their way for a change. Author addresses some of the logical issues with prior books (facial recognition) and we get some fun new characters and it’ll be cool to see a fleet. Hopefully we find out soon if there’s some more Ghazantak still out there in the galaxy.
I wanted to give it 5 stars but the end just lacked something. Perhaps a hint or a false trail increasing suspense. An now I have to impatiently wait for the next book to come out!
Ryk Brown did again! A great swashbuckling tale of adventure with Nathan Scott and friends . In usual Ryk Brown style you get science, intrigues, relationships and fun. The Frontiers Saga has yet to let me down. I can't wait for the next book.
One of the few authors I truly look forward to reading. Worth the time and energy. I can not wait for the next book. Well I guess I can since I have to
Nathan Scott and the crew of the Aurora not only has to fight the Korsan, but must also steal the three sister ships of the Aurora from Alliance controlled space. This is an action packed book that will keep you engaged to the end. Well done Rum Brown.
Nathan and friends push the envelope again as they take on the Korsan and try to abscond with three museum ships to add to their fleet. Naturally things get squirrelly in a hurry.
the briefing room meetings and the planning for the next mission is entertaining. The space battles are great. The characters are enjoyable and a little more romance between Scott and Jess would be good. Still the best Sci-fi series out there.
I am always surprised and happy the author is able to continue the story as well as he has. Always a new twist or type of twist and the military humor is well intertwined in every book.
I've read every chapter of this wonderful saga. Book one was my first step into space operas. I'm currently reading part 3 book 5. If you are contemplating a read in the space operas jèanra, start this story from book one.... hold on, it's quite a ride. 🚀
This is the third saga. Read them all first. When you think they can’t be better— they are! Great tech, character’s & completely (well kinda) plausible. Adult reading not like reading a video game. Just terrific!
fast paced, good story progression. EP 3.4 worth the read.
Fast paced, plenty of action. Good character development, and good progression of the storyline. Don’t have much bad to say about this version of the book and story. Read it it’s good.
Good read exciting, nail biting. Knowing the outcome but not knowing how. Nathan has, again, done the astonishing. The Alliance is awake and the battle is about to begin.
Ryk Brown has done it again. The journey of the Aurora and crew continues 500 years in the future, dealing once again with the down trodden and enslaved!
