A Vampire Chew Toy

Rate this book
Devin Jace lives in a huge mansion together with six other people, five of them turn furry, and one needs to drink blood to survive. Sometimes, he suspects it's all a dream. Four years ago, he had no idea supernatural beings existed. It wasn’t until he was snatched off the street and forced to live as a blood slave he realized vampires are real and don’t sparkle.

Three years ago, Mars O’Ceallaigh was part of the team who saved a badly scarred and severely traumatized Devin. As the only vampire on the team, he got to work undercover. To keep up the facade, he tasted Devin's blood. Not a day has gone by since without him thinking about it, both the taste of the blood and Devin. But he wants Devin to be happy, and since he knows vampires are his worst nightmare, he does his best to keep out of his way.

When the team learns Devin's captor has escaped prison, Mars is convinced he will come for Devin. Devin might fear Mars, but there is someone he fears more, so when Mars swears to keep him safe, Devin trusts him. Mars more than enjoys being by Devin's side at all times, but will spending every minute of every day with him be enough to keep him safe?

Dark Paranormal Romance
Hagwall Series #1
Format: digital

I enjoyed this and really liked the characters and flow of the story. I didn’t feel particularly drawn to Mars and Devin as a couple (though I did like them together), but I like the group as a whole, and the story kept me intrigued & reading even though the romance didn’t pick up till 2/3 into the book. I loved Rei and totally went looking for a book with his story after reading this… but there isn’t one. At least, not yet. But I would totally read Rei’s book, should one come out!

Nice story about found family, vampires, shifters and humans. Nicely paced, well written, great editing, every scene is well executed with no unnecessary filler. The author did such a great job getting you to care about these characters, they were all lovely and distinctive. Reads as a first in a series, but I don’t see where there are any plans for more books, which is such a shame because there are quite a few side characters that were interesting and could easily feature in their own story.

Low heat, low drama, paranormal, m/m, dual POV, light heat, HEA. Nice beach or vacation read.

Poor Devin really went through some horrible things, he along with Mars and the rest of the team were wonderful characters. I'm really hoping that there are future books for everyone. Well-written characters and an engaging storyline made for a very enjoyable read.

14/12/23 - 2nd read in preparation for the sequel novella coming out 25/13/23.

2nd time around, and loved it just as much!

*******,,

There are simply not enough stars!

A Vampire Chew Toy was written to celebrate National M&M Day held on 13 October. In this story, the M&Ms were a subtle but powerful symbol of safety and hope.

I think this has to be my favourite Holly Day book so far! I was also so so so happy that it was also one of her longest, so I could stay in this world, with these characters. A Vampire Chew Toy has Holly Day's signature compelling story and beautiful characters, but it was also much more.

This book has a powerful found family element, and even though the team has no idea how to help Devin initially, they are always there, giving him what he and they think he needs. When Devin starts to heal and comes out of his shell, they fully welcome him and integrate them into their family. It's a beautiful process to watch.

When danger threatens Devin, the team closes ranks, and he finds comfort and safety with the team as a whole, specifically with Mars, a vampire, the species responsible for Devin's torment. But in Devin's darkest moments, these bonds keep him sane and give him hope. Devins emotional bonds, not just with Mars but with the whole team, make this book special.

Devin has been mentally, emotionally, physically, and sexually tormented by vampires. When he is rescued, he goes entirely within himself. Too scared to leave the house, he mainly stays in his room and doesn't interact with the team. He is strong, though; when he heals enough, he starts to come out of his shell. Watching his first playful interactions with Murrie made me smile, and his confidence grew from there.

Holly Day has created a gorgeous group of shifters with very different personalities and communication styles, but they have kindness and empathy in common. Although this was Devin and Mars's story, it was very much an ensemble cast, with each character adding to the overall beautiful vibe of the story.

Although I'm a massive fan of Holly's books, A Vampire Chew Toy is unique. All I can say is if you enjoy paranormal stories, then make sure you grab a copy of this book. This is one of my top reads this year and one I'll return to many times.

2.5 stars; Spoilers required to cite evidence.

This could have been a perfectly okay average but entertaining "brain candy"read. The concept was very intriguing. But... It had, what is for me, a fatal flaw - Nonsensical absolutely WTF reactions of supposedly smart supernatural law enforcement.

24hrs Later and I still find it insulting. Money does not grow on trees. I can live with the barest of development on all fronts. What dropped it from a solid 3 stars to 2?

SPOILERS BELOW

1. One housemate says repeatedly and viscously things about Devin; which includes that they are not there to protect humans
2. Yet, when she offers to stay with him so the others can go on a rescue - no one even pauses to question it. Now, these are the same "professionals" that had physically threatened this housemate multiple times for her attitude towards Devin. Yet, they don't even question her sudden eagerness to protect him even with her belief they should have let him die etc...
3. Then their supervisor states the delivery company never comes back later in the same day or at a later time; they can't get Devin on the phone after just talking to him seconds ago- and despite having an extra car that the two agents they went to help had, no one splits off to go back and check on him? The author expects me to believe the vamp boyfriend (hair trigger protection) is not frantic or questioning their decision to leave Devin with that housemate now? That no one even questions it until after they find Hannah? At which time they all grow a brain and figure out the housemate was in on it and where to find Devin. Really?

All of sudden the the Big Boss they have been chasing for years and never come close to finding is conveniently with the minor bad guy and dispatched so easily? Again, really?

I really liked the characters despite the lack of development and simplistic writing. The story had a ton of potential. I'm a laid back reader, but I don't like being treated as I'm stupid. At this time, I will most definitely not be reading on.

Very good, although when they left Devin with Kenia I wanted to scream, "No, no, don't do it!" I just wish we knew what happened to her. I hope it was heinous.

Mars is an amazing vampire and partner, and he was perfect for Devin.

Rei, the jag shifter, deserves a story of his own.

And something needs to be done about that judge.

I enjoyed it a lot. :-)

Wow. I absolutely loved this to the point I don’t think I can adequately express how much

I adore this book. I like rereading books, but usually it takes me at least a year to do a re-read. I am seriously considering starting this book all over again. Where to start on how much I love this. The characters were fantastic. Despite there really being two MCs, it felt like there were 7 MCs with how much we got to know the whole group. Yes, some of the characters were more in the background (we don’t get to see/hear much from Faelan for example) but honestly that felt more to me like that’s because of who the character was. Some were really social and you felt that engagement, others kept more to themselves but just like a quiet friend you still enjoyed having them there. The plot itself was fantastic. The plot twist was done really well. It wasn’t big and brash, instead it was done so smoothly and subtly that I actually think it packed a bigger punch. There was also a really satisfying end to the story whilst leaving room for further books (please, pleaaaaase let this become a series!!!). The absolute stars though are Devin and Mars. I adored them both. In many ways they were similar at their core; they were both incredibly strong. Devin fought so hard to overcome his fears and to accept that just because some people are bad doesn’t make everyone bad. And while Devin’s strength showed in the way he was willing to push himself, Mars’ strength was in his quiet patience. There are times I can imagine he felt hurt but he was so willing to disregard his desires to help Devin. His quiet acceptance and willingness to be an unwavering support for Devin was perfect. They each had so much strength and courage and it came together beautifully. I have to say, I desperately want to read more from this series. I want to find out about Rei and see him find his HEA. I want to know how a certain new addition is going. I want to get to see more of Faelan and what kind of person he’ll fall for. Murrie is just a big snuggle bear as far as I’m concerned and I want to see if he finds a special someone (or maybe he already has?) and I really want to see more teasing from Hannah (she’s such a sweetie). Suffice it to say, this is going to be a reread for the long term with multiple rereads in its future. I just hope I can add some future books from this world I got the reread pile!

Loved the plot & the characters😍

4.5🌟 stars
Author Holly Day built her own interpretation of a world where humans, shifters and vampires interact and humans are vulnerable to cruel exploitation as blood slaves. Here a supernatural enforcement team of shifters and a vampire live and work together to keep the rogue elements in check and root out illegal traffickers of blood slaves.

The plot focuses on a slowly building relationship between Mars, the vampire on the team, and Devin, a rescued human blood slave who three years after his liberation is living with the team and still suffering from his trauma. But there's also Devin's growing friendship with the rest of the team and a new wave of potential trouble developing too close for comfort. I really liked the way it all fits together in a story that's hard to put down. There's some heavy action at the climax and some steam, mostly reserved for the HEA.

I hope the author follows this with more stories featuring other members of the team. I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

This was a good book. I really enjoyed Mars and Devin. Devin has suffered at the hands of vampires as a blood slave, but slowly he has gotten used to having Mars around. Those two characters and the others who live in the house caught my attention. I wasn’t too terribly surprised when stuff went down towards the end but I am glad that Devin and Mars were able to embrace their HEA. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I loved this book! This is not your average paranormal/vampire story.

Devon was snatched off the streets and has been a prisoner for the last year, in what basically amounts to a blood bordello. He's a blood slave - a human that is used for blood and sex by vampires - and he's about at the end of his sanity. Mars, is a vampire working undercover with a paranormal agency, who rescues the completely traumatized young man and ends up bringing him back to his team's base house. The team is headed up by a bear shifter and features a jaguar shifter and a couple of wolf shifters as well. The story jumps to three years after his rescue when Devon is still trying to deal with his abuse and trauma. Mars is inexplicably drawn to the young man, even though his very presence will set off a panic attack in Devon. As the team works to solve some cases of missing teens, it appears that all roads lead back to the same organization that imprisoned Devon, and that might be back in business.

I really enjoyed the paranormal agency aspect and how the members of the team try to help Devon. Rei is especially one of my favorites! There's a lot of action and definitely some angst but it shows just how strong the human spirit can be and how a person can rise above the horrors of their past. I was literally glued to the pages, so to speak, and was actually sad when I got to the end. I wasn't ready to let go of everyone yet!

Definitely recommend this book and a solid 5* stars!

I liked this book; the split was more to the romance, and less to the action, and the world building could have been more in depth.

The character driven parts worked best for me, with the focus on Devin and Mars' growing relationship, as well as the well developed side characters. I don't know if this is going to be a series (it sets itself up to be with a lot of single(ish) male characters at the end) but if it is, I would happily read more.

Only real quibble with it, was that one villain was so over telegraphed that it was too obvious and it was annoying that the characters didn't pick up on it sooner. Also, the 3 years between the prologue and the main story felt too long, mainly because Devin seemed to do nothing for 3 years, then made a lot of progress in a few days. I think better pacing would make that less jarring.

Enjoyable, but I found the pacing of the romance too sudden and the plot a bit loose. I think the motives of some antagonists were not fleshed out well. And a couple conversations were very repetitive.

This story shines as a narrative of trauma recovery, and the relationship between Devin, former blood slave and survivor of truly horrific circumstances, and Mars, the devoted, grumpy vampire who definitely has a thing for him, is patient and caring and sweet (hot too, in the right moments). Watching Devin develop a sense of comfort among his new friends and coworkers and regain things that bring him joy– cooking, organizing schedules, tattoos, tons of snark– is really rewarding, and it’s impossible not to want him to have the space to recover safely and away from previous horrors: but of course, nothing is ever that simple. The plot is definitely engaging, as you can feel the danger lurking in the shadows for Devin, but it can be a bit frustrating at times (or at least, it was for me) watching the team of supposedly professional shifters + vampire be so blindingly oblivious to the clear danger in their midst ( there’s a doozy of a “curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal” moment here, and I could have lived without it). Overall, I loved the characters, liked the world building, and had mostly positive feelings about the plot…well worth a read.

Outstanding story, intense and emotional

I love Holly's quirky stories and this is the best I have read. It's longer than usual, following the non-existent relationship between the severely traumatised Devin and the vampire who rescued him, and the pace allows us to get to know Devin and Mars before danger once again threatens and Devin turns towards Mars, relying on the protective vampire to keep him safe.
The self-restraint that Mars always displayed around Devin and the care and affection he shows him later on made my heart happy. I hated that he had to keep his distance for years, for Devin's peace of mind, but that made the payoff all the more sweet. The epilogue was the perfect ending, seeing Devin almost carefree, and very happy with Mars.
I loved the whole story, with Devin seeking sanctuary with the team who rescued him from a living nightmare. Each member of the team was a distinct personality, with their own quirks, and seeing them interacting with each other and then with Devin, once he started to come out of his shell, made for fascinating reading.
I definitely wouldn't be averse to Holly writing more stories in this world, if that's where her muse takes her.

Poor Devin has been through a horrific situation being held prisoner.
He was rescued and lives with his rescue team.
For three years he's been living pretty much as a ghost, terrified of everything and everyone.
A late night session has him slowly being pulled into the house's orbit and becoming more a part of the family.
He slowly begins interacting more with Mars, the vampire who rescued him and who he's been completely avoiding.
Mars is elated because he's been hoping for more with Devin but also trying desperately to give him space to heal.
As Devin actually gets to know everyone better we see a witty comedian emerge.
There is a past threat which reappears and Devin is put through a situation again due to a betrayal which devestates the group as a whole.
Devin is rescued along with another who was also taken.
I really would love to see a continuation of these characters as a series.

I’ve been a fan of Holly Day’s fun holiday stories from the start. A Vampire Chew Toy is a little darker than most of them, but ultimately is very optimistic Devin is the title character and the reader learns of his involuntary time as a blood slave, but most of the book details his slow trajectory back to health, both mental and physical. I never would have guessed his activity that helped him recover (it would not have been mine). He acquires a defender in Mars, the vampire who saved him once and wants to prevent Devin from being harmed again when the bad vampire resurfaces. It all ends happily, unlike many Halloween stories. If you enjoy vampires and shifters hiding in plain sight, yet living their reality, this is the book for you.I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I'm not sure what I think of this. I finished it, which is a good start.

It just didn't excite me. It seemed weirdly fast? Like, the three-year gap between the prologue and the story is fine, but Devin suddenly decides to start being okay with being around all the others? I'm also confused about why they kept him - sure, he can't be mind mojoed, but he could be moved into a mental health facility where he could have actual support and help, right?

I don't understand why they weren't more suspicious of . And then everything gets tied up so quickly and neatly. Surely there are other people like the Bad People, with connections to the one they were hunting?

Also, and this is just me, but what's with the city names? Just use real ones.

A Vampire Chew Toy is a wonderfully written intense story with a bit of romance about Devin, a human who is rescued from a vampire, only to find himself living with another vampire and several shifters. There is a bit of a surprise and a bit of predictability. I did find myself getting angry and yelling at the characters like they could hear me. I just knew something bad was going to happen. But all is well by the end. I was glad Mars was able to care for Devin in a way he needed. They have a special connection. I would love more stories from this world. Definitely recommend.

I have found my new love in the not so average paranormal stories, and this is one of them.

A shifter and vampire police force and their house ghost that they rescued from blood slavery.

I loved Devin's journey from being a shut in that avoided everyone, and blossoming in to a functioning person that was fun loving and even teasing. His mom level sternness when it came to everyone's scheduling issues.

Mars was lovely and his constant care for consent in every little touch was the best.

The friendships that had developed over the years, even if Devin was avoiding them, the care they had for him, was the best.

Oh I really loved reading about Mars and Devin's story. So much trauma Devin had during his kidnapped time..but there is also some witty banter among the housemates..between the action, mystery and intriguing plot..the twists..you will keep guessing who is behind the kidnapping of these characters. Poor Devin struggles to adjust to his "unique" housemates...one is a vampire, the others furry shifters. I loved how they formed a "family togetherness". Their leader has an unusual snack Obsession..which just adds to this remarkable story.

I received this as an ARC for free and leaving my honest opinion voluntarily.

Omg, what a book!!!
I was so worried about Devin, when he was there again!!!!! But I'm glad, that it all turned out this way. Just pity, that Kenia did not get enough punishment.
Will there be second book? About Rei and Dillon probably? I much liked Rei's character. Maybe that stupid judge will be involved in this story? And he appeared to be not stupid, but evil, obviously.
And did Kenia's father kept sponsoring them after what happened, or he stopped doing it?
Great book, I give it 5 points, I loved it!!

I’ll admit I bought this book because of the title. It cracked me up. The main character, the titular Chew Toy has had a really rough go of it. He’s basically lived in hiding for the three years since he was rescued. And then he starts to come out of his shell, and move past his trauma. It’s a really good story, and I enjoyed the cast of characters. I would happily read more in this world. I’m definitely going to look for more by this author.

A VAMPIRE CHEW TOY by @authorhollyday

Another finished Holly Day read, and another 5 star read! This world she built in this story was pretty epic. It was so different than most shifter, vampire, human universes I’ve read. There was trauma that was well represented and what felt like a real depiction of fears. Mars did so well with Devin and treated him gently but not like he was fragile. And how fun was the intimacy of Mars exploring Devin’s tattoos? Hot!

Interesting paranormal book

This book takes on a different view of the paranormal world where humans, shifters, and vampires co-exist. It has an engaging storyline and interesting characters. Of course you have to love Devin and by extension, Mars. It is highly recommended if you are into the paranormal.

Finally, a normal novel for this author. I was glad when we got a longer, well-developed storyline. The romance between Devin and Mars was sweet and maybe a bit too fast, still enjoyable. I liked this story and was glad when we got HEA and wouldn't mind reading more from this story setting.

I abandoned at 40%. It was generally okay, pretty lovely family feels from it too, but I could not get attached to the characters. I felt like the book never full spent any time introducing Mars or Dev, 40% in and I still had no idea who they were or why I should care about them.
