Could Have Been Sweet #4

Could Have Been Real

Rate this book
The world is full of stories.

Trust me. It’s true. And I’m always right, so I know. With hardly a glance, I can read just about anyone, add a couple notes, and orchestrate their next chapters.

It’s a gift worthy of exploitation as far as my father is concerned, so when he sends me to buy out quaint Chickville, South Carolina for his industry plans, I decide it’s time to write my own story.

The second after I lay eyes on Summer Roberts—local bookstore owner with a jaded past and a pant suit that doesn’t belong within a hundred miles of farm land—I decide my story involves a marriage of convenience.

At first, I just want to spite my father by ignoring all his orders, falling in “love,” and giving up his last name, but as Summer’s secrets and mine come undone, one beautiful page at a time, this little ploy turns into something else.

Something real.

Will she ever stop hating me for coercing her into staying in a place full of memories she doesn’t want to endure?

And, follow up question, am I allowed to fall in love with my wife?

Could Have Been Real is a laugh-out-loud, enemies-to-lovers, closed-door romcom with small-town magic, forced proximity, and a sunshine boy/grumpy girl dynamic.

Trigger Warning: depictions of depression and references to suicide

Camilla Evergreen is an alias of USA Today bestselling author Anne Stryker. Originally intended as a dumping ground for all things lacking fantasy, Camilla/Anne came to the shocking discovery that writing sarcastic, chaotic romcoms full of quippy heroines and adoring heroes has a kick to it.

Camilla/Anne’s neurodivergent tendencies leave her hyperfocused on writing sweet and sassy romances from dawn till dusk and lending whatever her current creative obsessions are to her characters. From arranged marriages to falling for the boss, there’s lots of love to go around.

What is Real

Louie is the unloved, but much utilized son of a billionaire. Said billionaire is known for buying places cheap, destroying any magic that was previously in place and building monstrosities of industrial communities. Louie has a knack for seeing things that are not openly displayed, so his father sends him ahead to cause the downfall of places he wishes to own.

Louie sees one such town and declares it filled with “small town magic”, and proceeds with a meeting set with the owner of a bookstore. He already knew she would be interesting and beautiful.

Summer is sad and just wants to sell the bookstore and escape the little town, but the overly exuberant guy sent to deal with her decides they should marry instead.

After reading the entire book, it turns out less ridiculous than it sounds. This rom-com is actually cute and funny with a definite HEA. Four solid stars for well-drawn characters and setting. The town itself was almost a character. Clean fun.

Wow, I loved this one!

I was unsure of how much I would like this book, because I didn’t really notice Louie in his appearance in Could Have Been Closer, and because marriage of convenience, while it's a trope I absolutely love, I don’t really read in contemporary romance format. But it didn’t let me down!

Louie was so loveable and so much fun. He was goofy and unpredictable, but since we get to read from his POV, we get to experience his thought process and feelings. I was so fascinated by his personality, the way he read people and was playful and laid back while also having a crazy mind for business and strategy.

I saw some reviews complaining how Summer only whined and complained about her hometown. I disagree. She was a bit tough to start out, but she had walls that needed to be broken down, and Louie did that for her. She was no nonsense and kind of reserved, not out of shyness but of just not being a people person. Once those layers started to be pulled away, she was thoughtful, loyal, and full of love.

Louie and Summer together balanced each other out. He helps her out of her self-imposed cocoon, she helps him be more himself. He's aching for love; she's aching for a home. They give each other that.
Their scenes together were enjoyable. Their banter was great, they read each other so well, and they were so tender with each other. Louie with his family issues and Summer with her past wounds came together and they helped each other heal and grow.
I also loved the chapters when Louie was sick and Summer took care of him, begrudgingly at first but then because she truly cared.
Also, Louie was so protective of Summer. *Heart eyes*

I really liked the unexpected turn of events how Louie met Summer's mother and father, told them about the marriage arrangement between him and Summer, and hid nothing about what he was planning for the town.
I also loved how much they loved Louie and were on board with his arrangement with Summer—being so obvious in their expectation and hope that the marriage would become real.

The only thing that really bothered me was that, while both Louie and Summer are heterosexual, I got kind of a weird feeling with how Summer thought about her childhood friend, Gloria. I worried for a while at first if it would be revealed how there had been more than friendly feelings between them.
As Summer began to think more openly about Gloria, though, I realized she apparently had just put her friend on a pedestal for how wonderful, kind, full of life, and impactful we’re told she had been.

There were also some sexual jokes and innuendos (which Louie's "gutter mind" was a running joke throughout) but none of it was gross or too crazy.

Summer's pet chicken was hilarious too.

I had a grand time reading this one!

What a perfect wrap-up for this group based off of Cyprian, Elliott and Louie’s long-term friendship and those who are drawn to them. Even if this adorable bunch of misfits couldn’t be more different in so many aspects, while fitting together so well.

I was curious about Louie when we got a look at him in the midst of Elliott and Juliette’s story, and I was so happy to find him rounding out the series. I’ve known people similar to Louie, and yes, it can be aggravating up close and personal, but something about Louie just keeps you drawn to him. My guess is because here we are allowed to see behind-the-facade Louie presents to the world. Inside is a broken man who cannot fathom anyone liking him for who he really is.

Summer, also broken, but also not hiding it well at all, just wants to escape from the pain, loss and disappointment in her wake. She’s not whiny like you may want to label her- she’s a girl desperately holding on by a fingernail and is refusing the branches and outstretched arms being offered all around her. And it is 100% believable how she sees the world- I know, because I have been there.

No matter how delightful the other women in the Could Have Been Sweet series are, or how broken they all are in their own ways (the menfolk as well) you discover a safe spot to catch a breath and realize it isn’t you so much that is the issue, but rather how the world looks down upon those we recognize as different… the handicapped, physically, emotionally, spiritually… those whose neurological pathways are their own rather than marching to that of the band. It’s such a welcome breath of air to find places where it is okay not to hide amongst what is considered “normal”. It’s not as if a universal idea of Norma exists anyway, and no one should have to force their square peg form through a round hole unless that’s what they enjoy.

Cause no harm always, (except in defense of your own life, duh), but wow are there so many out there who either deliberately or unthinkingly, ready to do just that in order to pretend they themselves are normal.

Summer and Louie will not always charm you, but they and their expanding group of friends sure aren’t harming anyone either.

I, for one, would love to see more realistic relationships forming between those who accept each other despite their differences.

Keep them coming, because your audience is certainly here and more than ready for it.

First and foremost, these books can be read as standalones but for the best reading experience read them in order! The Epilogue at the end of this book has a special little treat if you've read all the other books of the series! You can read this as a standalone but there may be some spoilers to the romantic couples' stories from the previous books.

"You're insane," I whisper. (Summer)

"You say that like it's an insult." - Louie

Summer wants nothing more than to leave behind the small town of Chickville and all the painful memories within it. But when a certain Billionaire's son comes flying in through her store doors plans change. Or more like the time frame has extended. . . Louie's a force of nature and has the ability to read everyone around him like an open book. Infuriating her to no end!

To top everything off? He wishes to marry her and reinvent the town! Having come up with a diabolical plan to get back at his father Louie's just lacking one piece, his Queen. Can Summer even do what he's asking? Should she even trust this man? Will he keep his end of the agreement? Pretty sure Louie's a male witch and Summer will do anything to keep from falling under his spell!

"Ah yes. The four-step plan every girl dreams of." - Summer

So, I had to rejog my memory for a second. We first meet Louie from the book involving Elliot and Juliette, "Could Have Been Closer", but it was a brief scene. But within that certain scene I just knew I needed a book with Louie! And I will say. . .I am NOT disappointed in the least!

I was laughing from chapter one all the way until the very last page! This book had so much witty comedy in it that I now have a goofy smile stuck on my face! The dynamic between the two was just phenomenal, I got "The Proposal" vibes from this read. Louie will blow you away with his energy and character. Summer was NOT prepared at all!

Louie knows how to read people and guess what's going through their mind. Summer hates that part of him with a passion especially since every statement he makes about her is true! This is a marriage of convenience and once the time limits up, she's gone. But Louie's stating she won't leave. . . Louie has golden retriever energy to the max! He also has no chill and will go from zero to one hundred in the blink of an eye.

This book has a lot of comedy but there are some heavier tones woven within this read. Namely the scary side of depression and what it can do or end up doing. . . There's references of suicide and struggles surrounding not seeing things. One of the main characters has had past and some present abuse involving being used and manipulated. Abandonment issues are mentioned as well but Camilla keeps the book lighthearted even with the moments of sadness. Everything was respectfully done and handled well.

The main characters are healing from things and helping one another as they struggle through this marriage of convenience. I loved the vibes of the smalltown and how Summer wants out and Louie wants in. Seeing the tight knit community and how it grows with the presence of Louie. This was a very good read and a great ending to the series!

Camilla does amazing work with these clean romances! I love that they are clean, but she understands that we are dealing with adults. So, there are adult things and innuendos within the book. Louie has no filter when it comes to showcasing his gutter brain! Of course, just jokes and Summer stops him on several occasions. I like how there's something Summer doesn't do that just completely rattles Louie to his core. There are reasons behind why she no longer does it, but Louie can't help but to tease her at every turn.

Summer doesn't back down from Louie's challenges and dishes things right back at him. Even tripping him up a couple of times and giving him a dose of his own medicine! I especially loved this one scene involving beautification of the town and water balloons! Just these two together were perfect and a great couple to end the series with!

This is a clean romance and the language that comes up is muted out. The romance is there and there's a slow burn between the two. I loved the romance and the intimacy that came about but ultimately faded to black. It's implied what happens. I enjoyed the twist on the trope of grump x sunshine. In this story the grump is the female, and the male is the sunshine!

I'm so glad I was able to be a part of this series from start to finish. I cannot wait for more books from Camilla, and I hope there are more that will make me laugh as much as this one did! The twists in this book as well were just phenomenal and I was cheering and crying at the end!

"If you were an author, you'd understand. We want enough money to build book forts and eat chips." - Harper (Poison!)

Enjoy this clean romantic comedy with so many laughs and duo POVs. Don't forget to give the author some stars!

This book was exhausting. Louie was so difficult to like in any sense of the word.

Also, did anyone else think that the relationship between Gloria and Summer was odd? It almost seemed like they were a couple with all the strange ways that Summer thought of/mentioned her (yes, written with the italics every time).

And again I state that I will read anything this woman writes. Full stop. Period. End of story.

This was such a cute book. I loved the marriage of convenience aspect and the sassy banter. Summer and Louie both have darkness in their past to overcome and I love the way they eventually help each other.

Oh and the sizzle…. Absolute perfection.

Oh, and I absolutely adored Summer’s parents and the confrontation at the end. Go, Dad!

Trigger warning: this does mention suicide of a loved one, but I think she handled it very beautifully.

These people are exhausting! MMC is every HR director's nightmare with his creepy inability to hear the word No. If he wasn't rich or cute then he would have been arrested for stalking and SH.

FMC is a pill in her own right. So angry and defensive and I get that she has reasons but the entire back and forth is him making lewd comments, her swearing she'll "NEVER" do blah blah blah, rinse and repeat. We all know she is gonna cave and then where will she direct her bitterness?

I hate the angsty backed-into-a-corner trope. It just feels so suffocating and ruins the romance for me.

Wow! Just wow! This book was all over the place with my feelings. In between all the hilarious dialogue it just makes you want to hug Summer and Louie and tell them how much you love them! Is it ok to love these fictional characters that much?!? It was funny and light and then heavy and thought provoking like a really effective therapy session.

If a book can help you understand others and hopefully grow as a person while still being entertained than this is the one!

Rom com Hallmark movie told with mental health awareness and fears, marriage of convenience plus save our small town. This one lived up to its trope and it was definitely a fun read. Clean romance. We've met Louie before but not Summer. Depression and suicide awareness.
Sensitively told. Still definitely a laugh out loud rom com. Recommend. Probably PG13 with Louie's joking around, though.

This was more along the lines of what I expect from Camilla Evergreen (from the first two books I read, anyway)—slightly unhinged, wildly unbelievable, and so fun that I don’t even care. I liked the dynamic between Louie and Summer; it reminded me of Nell and Carlyon from Georgette Heyer’s The Reluctant Widow, which is a totally different genre and style of writing, but it’s the same man-who-knows-everything vs absolutely-infuriated-woman-struggling-in-vain and it just makes for great reading.

Not a sweet romance and truly funny!

You will need a sense of humor for this one. It’s a strange, quirky, odd, feisty, and just downright lovable romance. Are there any other adjectives to add? I am sure there are. I couldn’t stop reading to the end. I enjoyed these characters so much.

So Many Surprises

Louie and Summer's story is so interesting, romantic, and full of surprises. There is pain in both of their lives, but the love and joy found in revitalizing her small town is so healing. It's a sweet story where two imperfect people make a perfect couple. The ending has its own surprises and is great.

Obviously I had to finish the series. I love her characters. The plots in this series seemed a little less fulfilling than her paranormal series.

Reminded me of Camilla Evergreen's other book, How to Destroy Your Lifelong Bully. The ML deals with daddy issues, and he's also somewhat depressed.

Content: Clean-ish. There are not f- or s-words, but there is the occasional "dang." No explicit scenes (fade-to-black/closed door, although there are mentions of it). A lot of sexual innuendos.

If you love Hallmark movies where they try to save the town, this is it book for you!

The flawed and broken characters ban together for the greater good. The found family!

Content:
Style - Dual POV, Contemporary RomCom (marriage of convenience, found family, small town, sick day)
Intimacy - High (kisses other than mouth, innuendo and gutter mind, fade to black married couple)
Language - Mild (bloody variation 6x)
Violence - None
Potential Triggers - past suicide, depression, toxic childhood and manipulation

After the second reread, I cannot stress enough how much you need to read this book. Grief, pain, love and hope and weave their threads together for one of Camilla’s earlier masterpieces.
