Roommates: A Dark Sapphic Romance

Rate this book
A hazing gone wrong. That’s what they’re saying happened… problem is, I know better.

I know who Melanie is. We may not have been roommates for long yet, but I know her. I know the way she smiles when she’s thought of something particularly cute or funny. The way her breath comes faster when I get too close.

I know she’s sweet and innocent. She’s also mine. They chose the wrong woman to hurt, and they’ll pay dearly for that choice.

It’s time for me to take over the family business. Learn the ropes and be who I was always meant to be. But unlike my father, I’m going to play with my prey first.

Who’d have thought that excessive disproportionate laughter could kill a book…well, it did.
1.5 because of the way the last two deaths were carried out (predictable AF, but still satisfying).

Okay, I have a lot to say about this one, starting with: it’s just not good. The premise had some promise, but poor editing, clunky wording, awful narrative choice, a cringe-worthy love-at-first-sight-based plot, eye-roll-worthy dialogue, etc. are just some of the things that made this difficult to read and impossible to like.

Due to time constraints, I won’t go full rant on this one (much as I’d like to), but I’ll hit a few of the main points…

This was an awkward length – the story and characters were too shallow to be a full-length novel and it was too drawn out to be a novella. It would have been better if some of the awful dialogue and repetitive unnecessary character thoughts were cut out to make it more of a novella. Because the book is told from the first-person present tense, it reads like the diary of two immature young girls, complete with juvenile language and lots of swearing (don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely not curse-word averse, but that was excessive). Top it off with some very clunky wording and over usage of a lot of words, and that makes for an unpleasant read.

The dialogue was awful. It was so…CHEESY! There was absolutely no way I could read this and be absorbed in the story because the dialogue was so bad that I spent most of my time thinking, “Who would actually say that?!”. There were also a lot of weird moments in dialogue and interactions because of poor verb choices – things like “snark” and “taunt” used in contexts that make me think the author and I have VERY different understandings of the word (or she likes her characters to act like vapid b*tches all the time).

Also, as I mentioned, the disproportionate laughter! This one irked me to no end - as my partner can attest to after the tirade I went on last night. There were so many instances of side-splitting laughter in this book that just made NO SENSE. Literal stomach-holding-bent-over or fall-on-the-floor laughter for the dumbest reasons. There was maybe one instance in the book that could have incited such laughter, so giving almost everything the characters said that sort of hysterical reaction made the MCs seem completely unhinged. Please, for the love of all that is good in this world, try words like “chuckle”, “giggle”, or even “snicker” on occasion. PLEASE.

There are a lot more things I could touch on here, but I'll leave it at that. I don’t recommend it, but you do you.

“no, i’m most definitely going to hell. i’ve decided your body is my new religion, because it is worth worshipping.”

i went into this expecting to dive into darkness but the story started off so warm and wholesome it completely disarmed me. their first interaction was endearingly sassy, hinting early on at the dynamic between these two, not exactly grumpy x sunshine but a balance between sarcastic banter and cheesy fluff that just worked for them. when things started to look too good to be true between these two (daria not correcting people when they referred to melanie as "her girlfriend") my anxiety went through the roof, but the hurt/comfort that followed the early plot conflict both broke my heart and soothed my soul. a murderous girlfriend enacting revenge on her woman's behalf whilst teaching her how to defend herself is not only swoon worthy but empowering. women who can kill are my weakness.

(i also loved how there were no masc/femme nor top/bottom discourse, as validating those terms can be to some, the appropriation and stereotypes surrounding it sometimes take me off from the experience)

Um.... hmmm... 2 Stars - It is ridiculous and unrealistic in the EXTREME, however, if you happen to be in the mood for revenge p0rn, then this will scratch that itch, I guess. Maybe? It's almost too silly/over-the-top even for that, but it is on KU and a quick read so, meh - you can check it out if you want.

I enjoyed this book very much, but I didn’t think it was THAT dark.
I don’t know, I guess I was expecting more?
But yeah I still enjoyed it

4 stars. Heed the warnings at the beginning because this was definitely dark. I loved it. Daria is the daughter of a hitman and she’s been training with him and knows how to kill a man. She’s hard edged and a bad bitch and I did swoon hard over her not gonna lie. Melanie is her roommate and she’s very sweet and kind of naive. She gets assaulted during a haze and the way that Daria was so protective and wanted to get revenge was everything. I loved them together and they had really great chemistry. There were some intense moments in this especially at the end but it kept me hooked. This was a very entertaining, dark, and twisty read. I loved it.

I enjoyed the book but I was hoping it was Mel who did that "cutting" and hoped she was more involved in that "process" but all in all it was a good revenge.

I loved this one I sped through it. Definitely couldn’t put it down. I love when bad people meet terrible ends and that definitely happened here. I really enjoyed that the women saved themselves and the ending was crazy.

This was okay. I specifically wanted something short and quick, and I was willing to go outside of my norm for it. It's a dark romance about new college roommates who quickly fall in love and lust, and when tragedy strikes, there's a lot of hurt/comfort and revenge. The contract killer thing was a little too ridiculous for me to take seriously, and all of the dialogue was just... not great? I didn't mind at first, because this was pushing all the buttons I needed it to, and I was really enjoying the tropiness, and it's a type of insta-love that I actually found appealing. But yeah, the plot was just a little too thin and stupid, and while I liked both girls, the writing didn't do anything to convince me of an emotional bond. The attempt at a survivor/trauma narrative was okay, but just too rushed for me.

Still, it was mostly okay; give it a go if you think it'd be up your alley.

quick read!

I wouldn’t call it a dark sapphic romance. There is a dark tone with SA and torture/murder but not with the sapphic romance. The writing is good. Spice is pretty good and the torture is gruesome. Overall felt kind of rushed but I’m glad I read it!!

I enjoy dark romances but this one felt a little disjointed. Everyone (aside from the obvious ones) was good and kind and seemingly perfect except when it came to killing and torture. There was no darkness in Daria or Kane except when something dark happened and then it felt jarring and out of place. Things seemed to escalate quickly so I didn't really have a chance to connect with the characters or what they were going through because of how fast paced it was from one thing to the next.

And why didn't anyone ever question where the alleyway dudes were? Daria shows up and Matt doesn't wonder why she's there, unharmed and without his friends, never to see or hear from them again? Then she threatens him but about a month later, suddenly he believes she wants to hook up and trusts her enough to meet up at a random location? That didn't make sense to me. And who were the 6 people? Were they other sorority/fraternity people? Would've liked to see an explanation of who they were or even how many of each there were. Something. Because when they got theirs, I didn't really care and it was a bit anticlimactic because they were nameless and faceless. I'm also still not sure how she convinced these 6 strangers to show up at an abandoned church. Would've been cool to see Daria maybe tracking them down and take them out one by one or even capture them one by one and bring them to the location then having her go through some kind of ploy to gain Matt's and Deedra's trust.

I kept reading because I wanted to see the revenge/torture of these people who hurt Melanie but I was again left a little bummed when suddenly it switched to Kane's perspective. Someone who was only partially observing while having a conversation with someone else. I wanted to read it through Daria. Not from a spectator watching on a camera. I feel bad for all the problems my brain couldn't reconcile or overlook but there were too many things that didn't connect for me or make me feel emotionally invested.

A LITTLE ABOUT THE BOOK/HOW DID IT MAKE ME FEEL
I honestly thought I would like this book more. It felt a bit on the younger side for me. It wasn't that the characters or setting felt young but at times the author felt beginner. I never felt pulled into the story. Maybe it was the pacing and the writing style. I do think this would be a good starter book for someone wanting a quick "dark" read. It for sure had some dark romance elements.

WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE CHARACTERS
I loved how protective Daria was of Mel. She was serious and lethal and I love that in my romances.

WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE BOOK
I loved that Daria was the one to get "justice" for Melanie's attackers.

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
The writing felt unpolished in some spots and it kept me from feeling fully connected. But that is personal preference and shouldn't keep anyone from trying.

TROPES
Sapphic, touch her and die, mafia, college, roommates

So, let me start this by saying I am pretty sure this is a young author and this is by no means meant to tear their work down. This story has a lot of potential and with some finessing I can see it being something really popular.

What I liked:
The story had a interesting and good plot that I wanted to continue and see where it went. I love a good plus sized MC and LGBTQ+ romance.

What I didn’t like and what could be improved:
The dialogue is the #1 issue I had with this book. I understand that the author was trying to set the stage and build the story, but it was very forced and unrealistic and continued that way throughout the whole story.
Daria was CONSTANTLY laughing (literally falling over laughing) or growling constantly, and I felt that it became so repetitive.
The dialogue with both the MCs dads were forced and definitely didn’t feel realistic and there were several times where a character was thinking something, and another character reassured them by using the EXACT language that they were thinking.

Overall this had potential and I so badly wanted a LGBTQ+ FF story that I stuck it out, but was definitely cringing the whole time.

“don’t be afraid, daria. together, we’re going to conquer everything.”

it pains me to say this, but roommates is the worst thing i've read in a good while. and i knew it would be, i called it in like chapter two, but i still wanted to give it a chance because there simply isn't enough wlw dark romances.

i hate insta-love with a burning passion and this is the epitome of insta-love. daria literally goes “there’s something about you that has me wanting to spill all of my secrets” after knowing melanie for two minutes. made me roll my eyes.

that being said, i kept cringing and rolling my eyes every time the characters spoke. this would've been so much better if there was no dialogue — which made me think that if this book was less insta-love bullshit and more about daria following in kanes footsteps, this could've been a more interesting book.

this book had some cute quotes, but that's like the only good thing i can say about it.

“even if she asked me to step away from her, i’d still watch over her from a distance like a dark guardian angel because she has my whole heart and always will.”

dark? definitely…

Who knew dark could be so rewarding. Daria did everything that I would have done for my daughters. I would have brought the world down around their heads. The sad thing, is that there was no need for what happened to happen. Some people are just evil. And this kind of evil generally gets away with it. But not this time.

What I like about Melanie is that she didn’t wuss out and get all wishy washy and playing continual victim. She took EVERYTHING in stride from first know. She took back her power, clung to love and moved on with a new family and a new life. She not only survived, she’s thriving.

We need the Kanes and the Darias in the world. They set wrong, right. The world can breathe a bit easier as they take out the most heinous and sadistic amongst us. I wish I had it in me to be that way. Me? I’m a Melanie. I accept and applaud the Daria’s in the world.

I’m only Daria when it comes to my own daughters I love them like Kane loves his daughter. I’d kill then die for them.

This book is just amazing. I wasn’t sure going into it. But the way the author writes it you can’t help but love it.

Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice Level: 🌶🌶
Darkness Level: 💀💀💀💀

⚠️: Mention of SA (off page), mental health, kidnapping, drugging, torture, dismemberment, murder

You just know if you pick up one of the author's books that it's going to be a bloody good time.

Roommates was a fun quick read, with a bit of insta love, and plenty of good, wholesome revenge that will satisfy your dark cravings.

I loved the relationship between Daria and Melanie. No matter how hard Daria is, her love and care for Melanie was everything. Daria had the whole "touch her and die" vibe I love so much, and had the right amount of possessiveness.

Do heed the warnings...the torture is quite graphic. (But oh so satisfying). Looking forward to whatever the author has in store for us next.

Dark fast-paced spice!

Wow! I’ve seen this book recommended a few times. I bought it and let it sit in my TBR for a while since I’m currently hooked on another author and wanted to read her entire backlist. Okay, on to this review. This book was something! And didn’t hold back on the spice, not one bit! However, this book left me with a lot of questions at the end. Still, it was a great book and the spice🥵🥵🥵⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ chefs kiss! I don’t know why I sat on this book for so long, now I have book hangover!

intense!!!

I really enjoyed this book! I love when the dark part of dark romance isn’t between the main characters, but for protection? Absolutely perfect!

Daria and Melanie were such amazing characters and I want to hug and protect them so much. Daria is so badass and scary I loved her! Daria and her dad’s relationship was weirdly wholesome considering what he does for a living but I really liked him.

The smut wasn’t my favorite, just a few of the words used wasn’t my cup of tea but I really loved certain aspects of it and really loved Mel and Daria’s relationship!
