This book is an English translation of the German book Tao Te Das Buch vom Sinn und Leben by Richard Wilhelm. That book is, of course, a translation of the Chinese book Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu. Tao Te Ching is an ancient Chinese classic of philosophy and spirituality. Copies have been found dating back to 250 BCE. Yet the thoughts in it are still relevant today
Lao Tzu is a legendary Chinese philosopher thought to have lived about 500 BCE.
.Richard Wilhelm (1878-1930) was a highly regarded scholar of ancient Chinese literature. His translation of I Ching is still considered one of the best. He published his translation of Tao Te Ching in 1910. He intended it for the general reader, not just academics. With this Kindle book it is now available to English speaking readers on a digital device.."Richard Wilhelm was a truly religious spirit with an unclouded and farsighted view of things. He had the gift of being able to listen without bias to the revelations of a foreign mentality and to accomplish the miracle of empathy, which enabled him to make the intellectual treasures of China accessible to Europe". -- Carl Jung
Other translators' comments on Wilhelm's
"There are several good scriptural translations of the TaoTe Ching. I think Wilhelm's is the best" - - Arthur Waley.
"Vigorous and scholarly translation". -- Gia-fu Feng.
"Important interpretation" --- Stefan Stenudd.
This book is Wilhelm's first edition. Although the text of the Tao Te Ching is complete, additional commentary found in later editions is not included.
Richard Wilhelm was a German translator. He translated many philosophical works from Chinese into German that in turn have been translated into other major languages of the world, including English. His translation of the I Ching is still regarded as one of the finest, as is his translation of The Secret of the Golden Flower, both of which include introductions by Swiss psychologist Carl Jung, who was a personal friend.
