Do chronic health conditions have you living in a dark place?
The poems and black ink sketches within tell a story of anger, struggle, sadness, and hope.
Susan paints a picture of her life with chronic medical conditions and invisible disabilities that will take you on a wild journey. Dark humor, creative rhyming, repetition, and rhythm are combined with expressive ink sketches she has created over the past few years.
Imagine being able to "fix" yourself with twine or silly putty. Picture what your confused brain looks like with bandages and scuff marks. Laughter and silliness have helped Susan get through some of her most difficult times. She explores everything from her rare ear condition to her autoimmune disease.
It is her hope that readers will see that humor can be found in the darkest of places, situations, and feelings. She shows that even with challenges and struggles, it is possible to find a path to wellness, whatever that may look like…
Susan Montgomery is an artist, author, and ukulele enthusiast who finds magic in life’s little moments. She believes creativity has a special way of bringing people together, whether through art, music, or a good story.
Best known for her whimsical picture books, Susan loves to mix things up, writing everything from Christian nonfiction to ukulele music books, all designed to spark joy and confidence. She picked up the ukulele during the COVID-19 pandemic, co-founded her local ukulele group, and even started a Christian ukulele ministry. Now, you’ll often find her weaving this cheerful instrument into her picture books, inspiring young readers to discover the joy and connection that ukulele music can bring.
Susan’s journey as a writer and illustrator began as a way to cope with chronic pain, but quickly turned into a true passion for storytelling. Her books celebrate animals, music, kindness, and everyday heroes, like therapy dogs spreading hope and a seahorse learning to strum along.
When she’s not sketching, painting, or strumming her ukulele, Susan loves sharing her stories at local shops and libraries. She’s always excited to connect with readers of all ages and spark a little imagination wherever she goes.
Susan holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education from Bowling Green State University and lives in Bowling Green, Ohio, with her tuxedo cat, Tracey.
This was such a great book. It helps to know you aren't the only one out there with invisible disabilities and it is written with humor and warmth and makes you feel less alone
