The Traitor is the second book in The Order's Assassin series by DC Gomez, and it is interconnected with the author's Intern Diaries series. Having read the first book of the Intern Diaries, I was familiar with the world in which this story is set, but I would have preferred to read the books in order to better understand what's going on.
Despite that, I found The Traitor to be a great read, with its fast-paced, action-packed storyline and well-crafted characters that tick all the right boxes. Although there were moments that seemed tied to the first book, they were minor inconveniences as the story flowed seamlessly and could be enjoyed as a standalone.
I have been a big fan of the author's writing style ever since I read her first book, and she continues to amaze me with how she creates a pristine plot by incorporating various subjects and genres without overshadowing each other. Although the paranormal element is prominent, the action and suspense still shine through.
Overall, I loved this book and look forward to reading more books by the author soon!
The Traitor, book two in The Order’s Assassin series, continues Sasha’s and Eric’s story. Author D.C. Gomez’s paranormal mystery will pull you along into a page-turner of a novel that will keep you engaged to the end.
Eric and Sasha find themselves embroiled in a variety of dangerous situations. Eric, on the search for a certain witch, is finding that strange things have been going on. Whole families of witches have met with untimely “accidents.” The known incidents are classified as “accidents,” but there are the ones that aren’t being reported at all. Then there is Sasha’s family—who suffers an attack that surprises the entire clan. Who would dare attack them and why? One mystery leads to another and to revelations no one could have expected.
The Traitor is the second in the series, however, even if you haven’t read the first book, you can easily dive into this one and enjoy every second of it. The characters will engage you, while the various mysteries will keep you wondering what is going to happen next.
This book alternates between Sasha and Eric’s points of view in each chapter. Sasha is hot on the mystery of the surprise attack on The Vault. She blames herself for what happened since she wasn’t there. She’s not the only one though. While the important members don’t hold her accountable, there are some who are going to insist on pushing their luck.
Due to the attack, Sasha is pushed back into the field. While this is not something she wanted, you’ll quickly see she excels at what she does. Sasha frequently finds herself in a variety of situations throughout this book, and you’re going to love that she is no damsel in distress. Not by a long shot. Sasha is kickass and knows how to handle herself in the tough situations she finds herself in. Honestly, her reaction to one is absolutely hilarious.
The story starts off with Eric witnessing the destruction of a home that once belonged to a family of witches. He gains some information from the bystanders and one, in particular, seems to know he’s not a human. Interestingly enough, he doesn’t get that same feeling in return. The question arises, and remains unanswered, who was this mysterious woman? Feel free to speculate because it will definitely be interesting if she shows up again at a later time.
Besides Eric and Sasha, the author throws in a nice variety of supporting characters. For readers who’ve read the series from the beginning, these characters—Isis, Bartholomew, Duke, Anita, and many more—will all be familiar. While most of the relationships and connections have already been established, they are still easy to follow for those just diving into this series. It won’t hurt, however, to go back to the beginning and establish a nice foundation with all of the characters.
Readers of this series are going to appreciate how the author sweeps you into the storyline from the very first page. The mysteries the two main characters are investigating draw you in as the pieces of the puzzle come together. Both characters already know, from previous experiences, that no one is to be trusted. Being an assassin, Sasha knows you can’t really trust another assassin. And Eric’s life in the order has taught him that war is never very far off.
Besides the mystery angle of this series, there is a nice amount of humor to keep things from becoming too dour and dark. For some of us, there is no such thing as “too dark,” but for those who enjoy a bit of comedy—there are just the right characters to bring that to light.
Duke is a great supporting character. He’s one of Eric’s go-to guys for information and help and delivers on that with a touch of humor. Of course, the author couldn’t let Duke have all the fun, so there are other characters, like Constantine, who brings a touch of humor to the story. One classic moment is captured in this line, “…you threw a man off the Empire State building… how was that an accident and not your fault?”
Duke truly brings a nice dose of humor to the book in unexpected ways. When a member of the clan goes missing, he offers some strange advice. There are some drawbacks to it, but his rationale is spot on—and humorous. His back and forth with Eric, in one of their later conversations, showcases that Duke is clearly the proactive type you want around when dealing with bad situations.
There are quite a few enjoyable characters throughout this book, and having just one favorite is not going to be an easy task. Is it a bad thing when a supporting character draws you in more than the main character? Some might say yes, but we say—not really. They all are coming together to create an unforgettable story that will keep you coming back for the next book.
Looking for some romance? Well, sparks are flying in this book, but as far as actual romance? You’re going to be left wanting on that aspect. Don’t take that to mean there won’t be any possibility of romance in future books. The potential is definitely there, so only time will tell what happens between these characters. It will definitely be interesting to see.
The author promises more to come in book three, so just settle down and go grab it. Or, go ahead and go for a run and then grab it. LOL!
Lesson of the book: The calm before the storm is the time when your enemies are plotting. Be on your guard.
Cons: None unless you are adamantly against cliffhangers LOL
Pros: Suspenseful and thrilling Engaging characters Nice amount of humor Page-turner Easy to join in series
‘Giving up the idiosyncrasies of being a witch’ - A modern hero delivers fun!
Dominican born Texas author D.C. Gomez studied film and television at New York University, served in the US Army, and now enjoys her best-seller status as an author. Her books may be about dark themes, but her infectious humor makes them thoroughly enjoyable. Her short stories have appeared in collections – CUPID WORE DOGTAGS, FIESTA NIGHTS, TIS THE SEASON – and her novels are in series – CHARLIE’S FABLES, THE CAT LADY, ANOTHER WORLD, THE DARE COLLECTION, THE ORDER’S ASSASSIN, THE ELISHA & ELIJA CHRONICLES, THE INTERN DIARIES, and THE ORDER’S ASSASSIN of which THE TRAITOR is Book 2.
Is it necessary to read Book 1 first? No (though that is recommended!), because Gomez catches us up on the characters and situations with skill. Her tone of writing invites the reader in as she opens this story: ‘The tires of the BMW SUV crunched through the slush. It was a typical freezing December afternoon in the middle of Maine. Snow and ice should have covered everything by now. Instead, water ran down the streets as the inferno radiating from the Keith’s residence warmed the block. The outline of the old Victorian mansion was still visible through the flames, but every minute the fire raged, it was harder to distinguished. Eric stepped out of the BMW as the chimney caved in…Five days before Christmas. Hopefully, nobody is expecting Santa Claus to deliver to that mess.’ With that sparkling wit, Gomez delivers her story, as the provided summary hints at the plot: ‘The clock is ticking and Eric (a witch and former cop) has less than a week to find and capture the infamous Rafael. He is willing to swallow his pride and hire the services of another deadly assassin, Sasha Garcia. Too bad for Eric, Sasha has given up the trade for a more civilized profession as an accountant. Now Eric has to find a way to convince the talented Sasha to work for him, while finding the traitors in their mists.’
Gomez has the urban fantasy genre down pat, mixing mystery with witches and cinematic settings. For those who love humorous paranormal fiction, this is a series to explore! Book 3 please…Recommended I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book
This was a rich and dynamic fantasy world the author has crafted. As a reader who comes into this series after having read the Intern Diaries, the series set before this one, I was already enthralled with the author’s ability to craft memorable narratives that skirted both the YA and NA genres. The way the author is able to build upon the world she has helped craft and infuse it with even more magic and mystery was great to see. The tension in the atmosphere of this book underscores the importance of the missions each protagonist is forced to undergo and allows the striking tone of the narrative to shine through.
The heart of this story rests in the character development and action-packed narrative. The chemistry between Eric and Sasha is palpable, and the evolution of Eric’s character from the Intern Diaries series into this spinoff series is great to behold. The rich cinematic quality of the author’s writing style allows readers to really see in their minds the setting and action come to life as if the novel held the quality of a great CW supernatural drama series.
The Verdict
Magical, adrenaline-fueled, and cinematic, author D.C. Gomez’s “The Traitor” is a fantastic urban fantasy story and a great addition to the Order’s Assassin Series. The chemistry between the cast of characters and the thriller aspect of the narrative will keep readers glued to the pages of this book, and the twists and turns will have readers eager for more from this incredible author.
A wonderful second installment to continue this great series. The twists and turns are entertaining while the characters charm and delight. Love it and can't wait for the next book.
I absolutely love Eric, Sasha, and the cast of characters. The author writes diverse and fun people who draw you in. I quickly became invested in them and enjoy the teasing amongst the friends.
The book could use other edit run - there were a few issues. However, nothing that took away from the story. The plot is action-packed, unpredictable, and engaging. I feel it's a testament to the author's writing talents - D.C. Gomez always keeps me glued to the pages.
It's going to be a difficult wait for book 3. In addition to reading the other series tied to these characters, I think I'll take pleasure in rereading this series again. It's that good!
Eric has been summoned to Salem to help with the troubles in the Order. Sasha has also been sent home to Salem. Their paths cross a couple of time. Can witches and shifters work together? Only time will tell, can't wait for the last chapter of this series to come out
