The Ghosts of Lewis Manor

Rate this book
Seraphina must choose the lesser of two evils—the ghosts that haunt her or the murderer who hunts her.

Born with a rare ability—or curse, Seraphina can see and hear the dead. During the early days of the London Blitz, she is confronted with hundreds of lost souls wandering the streets.

As the war escalates, her parents send her away to the home of an old friend in the English countryside to preserve her sanity. But there are monsters lurking in the hallways and the surrounding woods of the mansion, not all of them are ghosts.

Seraphina must use her gift to help solve the gruesome mysteries of Lewis Manor’s past in order to prevent her own murder in the present.

Stars: 2 out of 5.

The premise was promising, but the execution is disappointing. Overwritten prose. Some glaring historical errors that could have been avoided if the author had done a little bit of research before referencing certain things. The US Air Force wasn't officially established until 1947. During the war they were part of the US Army. Yes, a small detail, but it matters, and Google would have given you the correct answer in like 2 minutes.

My other problem is that there were no characters I could root for in this book. I didn't particularly care for Seraphina, and the supporting cast of characters aren't very fleshed out. They are there to serve a purpose, or possess one distinguishable treat and that's it.

I particularly didn't like the fact that the women in this book are all either older than Seraphina and thus fulfill the role of the town gossip or the wise "motherly" figure. And those who are her age or close are either dead, or rather unsympathetic. It's the usual trope of portraying the heroine as better (wiser, more beautiful, virtuous, etc.) as everyone else by making other women less than her. Ugh, I hate that trope.

Also, the idea that London somehow has less active ghosts than a little town in New Forest is rather ridiculous. London has been inhabited for thousands of years and saw its fare share of tragedies and deaths. For someone able to see ghosts, the city would be positively teeming with them.

I didn't particularly care for the romance between Seraphina and Ross either. It read rather lukewarm to me. Like the author just wanted to add a romance into the story to draw a parallel between Seraphina and Ross and Rose and Elliott.

Though I must admit that the concept that ghosts might exist on different planes from each other and not be able to see other ghosts or communicate with those that aren't on the same plane is interesting. I don't think I saw anything like that before.

My biggest issue is with the identity of the killer though. I found that it came out of nowhere. There was no foreshadowing anywhere in the book before the big reveal, no crumbs disseminated throughout the story to make the protagonist, or at least the reader suspect anything. It was just "bham! He is the killer! Queue evil laughter". It's almost like the author decided to make him the bad man just for shock value. I am all for shocking reveals, but they need to be justified.

Our main character Seraphina can see and interact with ghosts - I loved the premise and loved the way the author executed on this. One of my big concerns/issues with books like this is if the rules are consistent in the world. The author did a great job of staying consistent in this world and I was able to suspend my disbelief, get into the story, and not get frustrated with changes or inconsistencies.

I appreciated how well each character was differentiated. Seraphina interacts with a number of people, any of whom can be the murderer, and I was able to keep them all straight in my head. They were all distinct in different ways and it was easy to keep track of them. The answer for who the murderer is kept me guessing until the reveal. Seraphina made a case for just about everyone and I suspected everyone.

I also appreciate how different the 2 main ghosts were. She interacted with the soldier ghost who was a nice, young soldier trying to find what happened to his love. Then there's the angry house ghost who did a lot of screaming and door slamming. It was an interesting contrast between them both.

The atmosphere of the book was great. Lewis Manor is dark and creepy with ghosts running around. I felt very immersed in the Gothic atmosphere. The book is set during WWII and it reads that way. Some historical fiction feels like it was written now and set then; that's not the case with this book.

Overall, I loved this book. It was spooky and creepy without being too much. It was a great read for fall/spooky season.

Thank you for the author, publisher, and NetGalley for this advance review copy.

This book is filled with the dark Gothic atmosphere, and because that’s so very different from what I’m usually reading, it took me a little longer to really get into the story. It’s also got a deceptively slow build, which kept me guessing trying to figure out what details were going to prove important. I really enjoyed going on this journey with Seraphina. Everything seems just slightly suspicious (adding to that sense of “what’s really important?”) and almost nothing is as it appears to be. The ending was everything I needed it to be, but nothing I was expecting. I had all kinds of pet theories, yet the ultimate reveal caught me totally off guard. This may have been my first experience with the author, but it won’t be my last.

The Ghosts of Lewis Manor is in my opinion the best haunted mystery novel I've read this year!

When I read the blurb I thought this novel was going to be interesting, when I started reading and realised it was set during Second World War London I had my reservations - I don't usually read war novels.
Well my reservations were wrong. It may be set during the war but that was only the place setting and reasoning to send Seraphina off to Burley.

I absolutely enjoyed this novel so much that I was anticipating the next time I could pick it up to read. The Manor setting was eerie and the suspense of what was going on all played out well through the story.
The ghosts play a crucial part of this story and what I thought was a war story with ghosts, turned into a murder mystery with lost loves and ghosts.

Seraphina was a brave woman and I loved her character. Her strength throughout the novel was amazing and I loved her resolve.
Ross the American solider was just a lovely character and I really enjoyed his back and forth with Seraphina.
Elliot, dear elliot, as scary as he got he was still a likeable character and his dynamic with Seraphina made me root for them both.
I actually liked all of the characters in this novel, they brought the story together with their mysteries.

The story telling throughout this novel was perfection. The suspense, the suspect list, the mystery all carried their own weight to tell this haunting tale.
By the end I was blown away, I had every emotion going. I didn't see the outcome of the murderer coming and was pleasantly surprised. I was dreading the ending as I thought if this goes the way I was thinking I may have a breakdown. However the ending wasn't what I expected so breakdown averted.

I highly look forward to reading more from Marcia Maidana.

would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book

not quite what i thought it was going to be...yes there are ghosts

seraphina can see them.... but its the onset of war that causes her more distress with the abundance of ghosts around london once the bombing campaign had started, so it was with deep hardship that her mom and dad sent her to the country to live in a mansion that was being supplied by their great friend....

but once there more ghosts made themselves known and the warnings of not entering the woods when it was dark because of a killer became to much for seraphina

as the killer starts to target her and the ghosts make themselves known life becomes interesting, at times i struggled with one but i did want to find out who the killer was and how would the ghosts be helped....the answers are revealed....

Thank you NetGalley and City Owl Press!

Love, Loss and Loyalty. This books is nothing short of a roller coaster. The first half of this book I was thinking that I really liked this and would probably end up being a four star considering I am so picky with handing out five stars. That was until I got to the second half. I experienced every single emotion in such rapid succession I honestly needed a minute to breath. I was on edge, I was angry, I was frustrated, I was broken, I cried, and could not sit still. This book was absolutely phenomenal and I will without a doubt recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Buckle up people you are about to go on a wild ride.

Seraphina Addington has always been able to see ghosts. They have never caused her much trouble. However, as the London Blitz rages, the ghosts begin interacting with her and Seraphina has trouble telling the difference between the living and the dead, putting her own life in danger. Her father offers Seraphina refuge at the country home of a wartime friend, General Lewis, at All Hallows. Despite a rough time finding the manor, Seraphina enjoys its charms. The caretakers, the Goswicks, are a welcoming family despite their son Julian's oddities. Seraphina also finds companionship in Ross, a soldier stationed nearby. Seraphina soon finds that All Hallows has both friendly and hostile ghosts, as well as a mystery involving a woman who goes missing every five years, and the mark is approaching. Seraphina must use her ability to communicate with the dead in order to save herself from becoming the next target.

The Ghosts of Lewis Manor is a captivating Gothic mystery. Seraphina's character pulled me in from the beginning, not only with her ability to see ghosts but also with her caring and determined nature. The writing did a wonderful job of describing All Hallows and centering the house as a character itself, complete with secrets and mysteries to be solved. The mysteries of All Hallows are carefully layered and slowly teased out, keeping me guessing about the missing women and their connection to the ghosts of the manor. I enjoyed seeing Seraphina's relationships evolve with Elliot, Ross Julius, Carolyn and Mrs. Goswick. Julius was the most complex character; he had his own secrets, an ability similar to Seraphina's and his own motives for keeping All Hallow's secrets. Seraphina and Ross' romance mirrored that of Rose, the original missing woman, giving Seraphina a unique insights and further reasons to find Rose. With plenty of suspense, mystery and surprises, The Ghosts of Lewis Manor is a wonderfully atmospheric story.

The Ghosts of Lewis Manor is one of those stories that wraps you in its atmosphere from the very first page. Set against the backdrop of the London Blitz, it blends historical tension with a touch of the supernatural in a way that feels both immersive and surprisingly tender.

Seraphina is a wonderfully sympathetic heroine. Her ability to see and hear the dead is presented not as a dramatic party trick, but as something heavy, exhausting, and deeply human—especially when the Blitz fills the streets with wandering souls. Her parents’ decision to send her to the countryside feels protective at first, but Lewis Manor quickly proves to be anything but a safe haven.

The manor itself is a standout character: creaking hallways, shadowed corners, and a sense of history that clings to every room. The mix of ghosts and very real human threats gives the story a deliciously unsettling edge. I loved how the novel balances eerie moments with emotional depth, letting Seraphina’s fear, resilience, and determination shine through.

As she begins to unravel the manor’s dark past, the mystery builds at a satisfying pace. The danger feels real, the stakes personal, and the blend of supernatural and murder‑mystery elements works beautifully. Seraphina’s gift becomes both her burden and her strength, and watching her use it to piece together the truth is genuinely compelling.

Overall, The Ghosts of Lewis Manor is a warm, spooky, and engaging read—perfect for anyone who enjoys ghostly mysteries with heart, strong heroines, and a richly atmospheric setting.

This is my first time reading a book by Marcia Miranda.

The book starts off in London during the War World 2. After a bomb goes off and Seraphina sees a little boy who is dead her parents fear for her safety. Seraphina is sent to All Hallows in Burley. It’s located in the middle of the English countryside with trees and flowers all around it. On her trek through the forest she meets Ross Stewart an American Solider. She first finds the cottage of the Goswick family who then leads her to the Lewis Manor.

The Lewis Manor is haunted by 2 ghosts. Elliott who was in love with Rose Lewis and an identified woman who was filled with rage. These 2 ghosts play a vital role throughout the story.

Seraphina is very brave as she goes out to explore the forest after being warned about a killer lurking around. She befriends Julius who knows every tree and plant. She helps Elliott find Rose so that he can be free from the forest and the Manor. Her relationship with Ross blossoms into love. The killer showing up at the Manor was a shock and finding out who was behind it was even more shocking.

The story was very well written and it was full of mystery and suspense. The characters in the story were well developed and the description of them made it easy to visualize. The Manor was a scary place especially at night. I highly recommend reading this book and I look forward to reading more books by this author.

The Ghosts of Lewis Manor is a haunting, atmospheric blend of historical fiction and supernatural suspense, steeped in grief, danger, and the lingering weight of the past.

Set during the London Blitz, the story immediately establishes an unsettling tone. Seraphina’s ability to see and hear the dead feels more like a burden than a gift, especially in a world overwhelmed by loss. When she’s sent away to Lewis Manor in the English countryside, the promise of peace quickly dissolves into something far more sinister.

The manor itself is steeped in secrets, and I loved how the story balances its ghostly elements with very real human threats. Not all monsters here are supernatural, and the slow realisation that Seraphina may be in just as much danger from the living as the dead creates a constant sense of unease. The mystery unfolds steadily, pulling the past and present together in a way that feels both eerie and emotionally resonant.

Moody, gothic, and quietly terrifying, this is a great pick for readers who enjoy historical ghost stories, haunted houses, and mysteries where the past refuses to stay buried.

The ghosts of Lewis Manor by Marcia Armandi is a historical haunted house novel that I throughly enjoyed.

When our main character, Serraphina gets sent away to All Hallows its for good reason. Her parents want her safe from the war. She has a secret though, she can see ghosts. And all Hallows has a few.

I'm a suckered for a haunted house novel and so this drew me in quite fast. It's always interesting to see how the paranormal or supernatural is displayed. Marcia Armandi chose to make it so our main character could interact and talk to them, helping to flesh out the story and have a few different mysteries for Serraphina to solve.

Our cast of characters are all suspects in this one and I really didn't see the murderer untill the reveal, we have every reason to suspect everyone and I enjoyed that.

There is some romance but it is not the focus of the story, and it added another dimension to the story, wrapping around war, exploring love and linking this to the ghosts stories was a nice touch.

This is not a scary book however but more of a mystery - if you like mysteries set in historical times check this one out.

- First Person, Single POV
- Mystery / Historical Paranormal Fiction (WWII)
- Kisses only Romance

The Ghosts of Lewis Manor was such an intriguing mystery. I was hooked right from the first paragraph and devoured the rest of the book so fast.

I know I don't post about a lot of books like this (mostly because I'm elbow deep in ARCs and those happen to be mainly RomComs lately) but I actually really love the historical fiction and mystery genres. I thought Marcia did a fantastic job melding the two together, while adding in just the right amount of paranormal frights (the paranormal aspect didn't come across as too overly spooky and I think you could still really enjoy this mystery even if ghosts aren't usually your thing).

I thought this was such a well rounded story that didn't have a lot of over the top violence and was able to keep me engaged and wanting to know what would happen next.

The book was well written, with a good amount of humor, along with some sweet moments. There really was a good balance so the heartbreaking aspects, that came with the WWII timeline and the mystery, did not overtake the story.

I was on the edge of my seat, not wanting to set this one down. The characters were well developed and entertaining. I especially enjoyed Ross and Elliott. I can't wait to read more of Marcia's books!

A big thank you to @cityowlbooks for the opportunity to read this amazing story.

Thanks to City Owl Press for the ARC.

This book and I got off to a shaky start. The reference to ‘row houses’ in London on the first page made me think it was going to be full of Americanisms despite the UK setting. Seraphina’s voice also seemed a little too archaic to me - more Victorian Gothic than WW2. Then in the early chapters, the Burley inhabitants refusal to come right out and tell her there was a serial killer on the loose seemed a bit unrealistic.
But as the book went on I started to forget about these little issues, as the plot dragged me in. Maidana did a good job of setting up the paranormal rules, and of making me suspect pretty much everyone of being the murderer. There were red herrings a-plenty! The conclusion was satisfying, if a little checklist-y. So despite my early concerns, I’m giving this four stars. It gives you what it promises: Gothic atmosphere and a compelling murder mystery plot.

I liked the ghostly atmosphere this book creates. Seraphina comes to Lewis Manor and she has an ability to see ghosts. Lewis Manor is full of them and she takes it upon herself to uncover the secrets of the ghosts not passed over.

Set over war time, bombs have caused anguish for many, being split from her family, she's unsure if they are alive or not when her home area is hit. A general may have answers for her.

I like the secrecy to the Manor, lost diaries, libraries holding memories and gardens with secret meetings between two people.

I like that the ghosts mix with the living although only Seraphina can see and interact with the ghosts.

A good read, it has a good ending and its all tied up nicely.

I love historical fiction, especially WWII; and I love an old fashioned ghost story. So this book was especially enjoyable for me. Seraphina leaves war torn London for the safety ( or so she believes) of Lewis Manor in the English countryside. And did I mention she can see ghosts? Enter Elliot the friendly ghost, and the malevolent lady ghost who haunts the manor every night. Add in the mystery of a serial killer who strikes the area every five years. Fast moving with very likable characters, I have to give this tale five stars.

This book is for lovers of historical fiction with a fun ghost story. I loved the history (set during WWII) plus all the characters and their relationships. It also had a great balance of creepy vs mystery that had me guessing until the end. There was sadness that came along with the different stories told within the book that pulled at my heartstrings as well. All sorts of emotions throughout the book and I couldnt read the words fast enough when I got to the end while not wanting it to end at the same time.

I really enjoyed this book. I thought that it was interesting to see how WWII was effecting London and how they spread the soldiers and war aircraft out into the country. I liked seeing how different the ghost were and getting to see what became of them. I thought that I had the killer figured out the entire time, only to be shocked by how wrong I was. I loved the budding romance between Seraphina and Ross.

A WISHING SHELF BOOK REVIEW
12th October 2022
TITLE: The Ghosts of Lewis Manor
AUTHOR: Marcia Maidana
Star Rating: 5

‘A skilfully plotted murder/mystery with a ghostly presence. Highly recommended!’ The Wishing Shelf

REVIEW
For me, a good book, a really good book, needs a hook. Not a complicated hook, just a simple hook pulling me into the story. A woman who can see ghosts. Yes, I liked that although it´s not particularly original. But a woman who can see ghosts living during World War Two. That I loved. A lot!
In this cleverly plotted murder/mystery, Seraphina is living in London during the Blitz, her ability (or curse) forcing her to see the ´hundreds of lost souls wandering the streets´. So she´s sent away to an old manor. But is she better off there? Not at all, the manor (and the surrounding woods) filled with terrible secrets and, possibly, a killer!
This is a well-written mystery packed full of ghostly twists and turns – and plenty of suspense. The characters, ghostly or not, are well-developed, and the author works hard to put over the creepy manor and the spooky woods. She also works well with dialogue, using it as a tool to develop the story and the characters. There´s also strong pacing all the way up to a surprising ending I did not expect.
I´m very happy to recommend this novel to anybody who enjoy a skilfully crafted mystery. Seraphina´s gift adds a lot to the story, giving it a thoroughly creepy feel many readers will enjoy. In many ways, this is the sort of book that would go down well with a reading group; there's so much to discuss, so many interesting characters to explore. All in all, it's a bit of a gem.
Enjoy!

Great Fall and Spooky Season read!

I love a good mystery and to have a ghost story/mystery was fun and exciting. I don't usually like Ghost stories, but this one I could handle as it wasn't too scary. It had some alarming parts, but nothing graphic or frightening. I had a hard time putting this book down because I wanted to keep reading and keep trying to figure out who the murderer was. It kept me guessing right up until the very end. I feel like I should have figured out who the murderer was, but with all the twists and turns and great writing I was definitely surprised at who it was. I love Marcia Maidana's writing and feel that her writing and story telling keeps getting better and better with each book she writes. I loved her descriptions, dialogue, and the way she made me feel like I was in the story as well. Her writing is especially impressive because English is not her first language. To write a book in your second language (especially when that language is English) is amazing and so cool! I look forward to reading more of Marcia's books in the future.
