In search of a story, he found murder and romance.
Author Christian Costner is researching material for one of his dark thrillers, and Nyemouth seems like the perfect setting for his next book. The small seaside town has witnessed plenty of trouble over the years, and Christian thinks it will provide him with the inspiration he needs.
He hires local tour guide and fisherman Harry Renner to help him explore the coastline for a couple of days. Harry is knowledgeable and mature beyond his twenty-eight years. Handsome, too, though Christian thinks Harry is far too young for him.
As the weather worsens, Harry cuts short their first sightseeing trip. Heading back to shore, they spot a figure in distress in the water. A difficult rescue is made far worse when they discover that the casualty has a knife wound to his abdomen and dies before they reach the safety of the harbour.
United by the trauma, Christian and Harry find comfort in each other, but when another murder comes to light, they find themselves at the heart of a dangerous mystery and the target of a killer more ruthless than they could ever imagine.
Reader advisory: This book contains murder, verbal racism and homophobia. It can be read either as a standalone or as book three in a series.
Thom Collins is the author of the novel Closer by Morning, with Pride Publishing. His love of page turning thrillers began at an early age when his mother caught him reading the latest Jackie Collins book and promptly confiscated it, sparking a life-long love of raunchy novels. His novella Silent Voices will be published by Pride in May, followed by the novel Anthem of the Sea, the first book in the Anthem Trilogy. He has recently finished writing the second book in a series and is making plans for the third. Thom has lived in the North East of England his whole life. He grew up in Northumberland and now lives in County Durham with his husband and two cats. He loves all kinds of genre fiction, especially bonk-busters, thrillers, romance and horror. He is also a cookery book addict with far too many titles cluttering his shelves. When not writing he can be found in the kitchen trying out new recipes. He’s a keen traveler but with a fear of flying that gets worse with age. Since taking his first cruise in 2013 he realized that sailing is the way to go.
Deep waters are the third story in the Jagged shores series set in the small fishing town of Nyemouth on the north easter coast of England.
This is our third visit to the fishing town. We join Christian a reporter and aspiring author, who has come to the small coastal town to seek inspiration for his next suspense / thriller novel. He certainly gets inspiration, and a whole lot more, not only does he find romance in the tour boat captain but is drawn into a murder scene that turns into two and more. The Romance between Christian and Harry, is almost instant attraction but events and their individual lives are set against them. They both initially think their feelings for each other, may be more a reaction to what they have witnessed and experienced on the first day of Christian visit. I really liked the chemistry between them and the fact they both had reservations as to whether they should pursue a romance, but I am so pleased they did. I liked the way that the author twisted the age gap theme and that Harry with his harsh life as a fisherman/boat tour and lifeguard, puts him on an equal footing to Christian’s maturity. The author is a master of slowly building the danger and suspense in each of the series stories. There are one or two red herrings, which I must admit caught me out, in fact one of my suspects, becomes a victim. I am usually good at guessing who done it in thrillers. As with the previous books the characters are strong and well developed, with their unique personalities, and this goes for the minor characters too. You really feel like you know them all as though you yourself have lived in the small town for years. The descriptive writing is superb and is probably my favourite aspect of the whole series and the author’s writing style. Why? I hear you asking. Simply put, he captures the feel of the small fishing town. From the cobbled and ragged stone streets and buildings to the rugged cliffs, Even the way he shows the thick fog in the story is so real. Then when we get to the stormy seas. I really felt like I was there struggling to keep standing and not being swept away by the thrashing waves and cutting gales. This is especially evident in the climactic scenes.
My first read of 2023 and it is highly likely to be in my top 5 at the end of the year.
Things I liked: The Romance The Characters Danger Descriptive environments and places And nail-biting suspense, I must read one more page syndrome.
Things I did not like so much: The book ended. I do not know if there will be a book 4 and if there is, I will have to wait for it’s release.
My first read of 2023 and it is highly likely to be in my top 5 at the end of the year.
I was happy when I found out that Thom Collins was publishing another story in this series. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books and book three was also a winner.
Deep Waters is another romantic, edge-of-your-seat story and I enjoyed reading it very much. It’s the third book in the Jagged Shores series but you can read it as a standalone with no problem. I read books one and two and loved them, but over a year has passed since reading the last book (that means about 600 books ago) so I didn’t really remember the story and it didn’t matter or impact my enjoyment of Deep Waters.
Christian has come to Nyemouth to do research for a book he wants to write. He never expected to find love or so many murders. Harry has lived in Nyemouth all his life and he enjoys taking sight-seers and fishermen out on his boat. Christian hires him for a day so that he can see the area and get inspiration for his novel.
It’s no lie that this book kept me totally captivated from start to finish. In addition to the suspense, the story was about the developing relationship between Christian and Harry. It was the discovery of a body in the water that first drew them to each other but they soon realized it was more than that. When another body was found things got more and more interesting.
The suspense surrounding what would happen next, who would be the next victim and trying to guess who was the baddie had me on the edge of my seat the deeper I got into the book. Just when I thought I might know who did it, another surprise came at me.
Note: I said in my review of books one and two that it was refreshing to read a book where no one bats an eye or has any problems with a same-sex couple. This did not apply to this story. There is bigotry and homophobia mentioned more than once. While this behavior is horrible it is integral to this particular story.
I don’t know if there are more books planned for this series or not but I will be happy to read them if there are.
A copy of this book was provided to me at my request; my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

Harry has a sailing boat that tourists can rent out. He has been hired by writer Christian Costner to help him get a lay of the land and research for a new book the author is planning on writing. However, the weather takes a turn for the worse so they have to cut the trip short and head back to the shore, as they are heading back Christian is adamant he has seen somebody in the swell of the waves so speaks out. Harry, his onboard help and cousin Tom look to discover there is somebody in the water so a daring rescue takes place. They recover the body but that is only the start!
Thom has a very easy style of writing and it captivated me from the get-go. This is the 3rd book in the jagged shores series but can be read as a stand-alone. It has intrigue and mystery that does keep you guessing until it's all out in the open who has committed the crime. It certainly hoodwinked me I normally can be quite good at guessing whodunit but I was completely off the mark.
I was rooting for the relationship between Harry and Christian as it was something they both needed. There are sex scenes but nothing too crass.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the author's writing and look forward to reading more of his books.

Deep Waters in the third novel in the Jagged Shores series, which focuses on the inhabitants and visitors to the small town of Nyemouth. It was a seemingly peaceful place to live until the last few years’ string of murders and attempted murders have started to draw attention from further afield. One of those is journalist Christian who is looking for a setting for his novel. When he hires a boat to take him sight-seeing along the coast, becoming involved in a rescue and murder was not what he had anticipated. And nor was his attraction to his tour guide Harry. As the mystery deepens and so does their blossoming relationship, the two of them could end up finding themselves targets of an unhinged killer stalking the coastal town.
I enjoyed reading Deep Waters. The characters of Christian and Harry were interesting and likeable, and you could feel the chemistry between them from their first meeting. Despite both of them worrying that trauma was the main draw they had to each other, you could see that it was a naturally occurring relationship and not forced at all. The romance was the main focus of the novel, but the mystery added depth and backdrop to this. It certainly keeps you guessing – I thought I knew who it was and turns out I didn’t! If you enjoy romance and murder mysteries, then this novel is for you!
Christian gets more than he bargains for when he charters Harry’s boat to research locations for his next novel. When he spots something in the water that looks like a person, Harry springs into action to rescue him, unfortunately it’s too late.
Over a drink to overcome the days events, Harry begins to realise an attraction to Christian. But before anything can happen another body is found.
The town of Nyemouth is no longer a sleepy coastal town, murder and crimes of passion. It seems like the perfect place for Christian to set his new book. Plus he gets to spend more time with Harry.
Unfortunately the bodies continue to pile up and the police are no closer to solving the crime. Being a journalist, Christian keeps investigating to get to the bottom of the crimes. Will he solve it? Or will someone else be harmed?
This was the most gripping book of the series so far. The seemingly random stabbings follow no real pattern and have toe town on edge. And I will be honest I did not expect the reveal and the motive for the crimes!
Like the other books in the series @thomcollinsauthor does a great job with the spicy scenes. Nothing is cringey and the right level of detail is provided at all times.
I love the callbacks to the previous books and how the characters are all settling into Nyemouth life. I am super excited to continue with this series and see what else can happen in Nyemouth
Nyemouth is the perfect name for the setting of a story of mystery and murder. Like those H.P. Lovecraft villages with their quaint names that harbored monstrous things, Nyemouth is hiding not something supernatural, but a human killer determined to get away with their crimes. Christian has come to get material and absorb the atmosphere for his next thriller, he never expects to confront a killer or to meet a man he's immediately attracted to, Harry, a fisherman/tour guide in the area. These stumble upon and attempt to save a victim of the killer and are thereby drawn into the mystery, especially after they learn their victim isn't the only one. This book like all the ones I've read by Thom Collins, has both a romance that I would read on its own because I enjoy the characters of Christian and Harry and the development of their age-gap romance and a mystery that I would read on its own without the romance because I found it well crafted with a nice air of menace. Fortunately, Collins is able to seamlessly blend both these elements in his books so the pleasure increases exponentially. Let's hope there are many, many more mystery/romance books coming from him in the future.
This is the first book I have read by this author and it won't be the last. Obviously I haven't read the two previous books but I was able to fully enjoy this book as a standalone. This is the story of Christian Costner and Harry Renner. Christian is an author and is in Nyemouth on vacation and to find inspiration for his next book. Harry is a local tour guide and fisherman. Christian has hired Harry to take him out on his boat to get some photos of the rugged coast line and to churn up his creative juices. When bad weather cuts their first day short, they find an injured man in the water. Both Harry and Christian lean on each other to get over the incident. The spark that they find between each other continues to grow. As further incidents happen, they are drawn together into the mystery. This is their story. This is a well written and easy to read book. I really enjoyed it. I will be looking for more from this author.
I received a free copy of this book from GBP and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Christian comes to a small out of the way fishing village to research his next book. He certainly didn’t plan on meeting a charismatic younger man or becoming embroiled in several murders.
As mysteries go this one was interesting. But the heart of the story was the feelings that developed between Christian and Harry. It felt like instalove in that they immediately connected but I also felt that the circumstances of the first murder pushed them together very quickly and dictated the flow of their relationship.
The mystery of the murders seemed (at times) to fall into the background. I liked Christian and Harry so I didn’t really mind that too much. I thought the story was well done and that the author painted a vivid description of the surroundings and weather. Also, the heat between the men was nicely done as well.
I haven’t read the other books in the series but that didn’t affect my enjoyment of this book.

This is book three in the Jagged Shores series but it can definitely be read as a stand alone. The blurb talks about this being a murder/mystery book but, for me, the book was primarily a romance. There is definitely murder but it was the relationship between Christian and Harry which was front and centre. I liked watching their relationship develop but I was a little disappointed in the murder/mystery. I felt that this was a little rushed. The hints about who the murderer was a in the book but I would have liked a little more content to really appreciate this part of the story. That being said, I liked Deep Waters and I am enjoying the way in which the author writes. I would like to read more by Thom Collins. I received a free copy of Deep Waters in return for an honest and voluntary review.
There's an interesting blend here of suspense, courtesy of an increasingly urgent murder mystery, and romance, in the form of the chemistry which blooms into more between Christian, a visiting author, and Harry, local boat captain. The romance takes a bit of a back burner to the intrigue, but there’s enough time spent on their connection that you can see how, despite the significant age gap, and the geographical and career trajectory divides, these two could work well together. All in all, it’s easy to get pulled into the plot, and to want to see how things will work out, for both the larger mystery and the central couple. Readers familiar with earlier books in the series may see familiar faces and places here, but the story can also work as a standalone.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
After Safe Harbour I wanted to continue this series. I could not put that book down and I found that to be the same here. I believe this is more romance than mystery but I enjoyed the way the relationship developed from instant attraction. Christian goes to a small fishing village to do research for his new book. He didn’t expect to be attracted to his tour guide Harry. He also didn’t plan on being involved in a murder. There are quite a few secondary characters that add to keep the story interesting. The relationship develops and the attraction turns pretty hot. I find this is a great addition to the series.
I read and reviewed Runner by the author. And it was a great read, so when Deep Waters came up for review, I was in. Although the novel is the third book in the Jagged Shores series, it operates as a standalone. We do see the main leads from the previous books, but they are present to lend a hand, and in no way do they overpower the two main stars of Deep Waters.
Let’s start first with Christian Costner, a writer who is researching his latest novel. He’s an older man, not out looking for love or anything other than what can inspire him to create a new piece of fiction.
Christian Costner is taking a break from his work to undertake some research and inspiration for a book and is in Nyemouth. He hires a local boat to investigate the coast and meet the skipper Harry. During a trip Christian sees a somebody floating in the sea and after he and a crew member manage to bring the person on board the boat but he has been severely stabbed and he does not make it. This is the first murder and with more to follow. During this time Christian and Harry grow closer and their relationship develops. . This has a good storyline with good characters and I can recommend this book.
Christian is in Nyemouth researching for his new book but there's is mystery and mayhem. Harry is a local and is his tour guide. Someone is killing and murdering young men and Christian and Harry are caught in the investigation. These two are instantly attracted to each other and started a relationship. They have to deal with homophobic people, the elements and meddling neighbours. The book will have you on the edge of your seat with some many twists and turns. It has low angst, with some intense moments, and it was great seeing the previous characters.
Harry runs a fishing and tour boat in a small coastal town. Glad to get a charter off season he takes Christian on a charter to take photos and get inspiration for a novel. They didn’t expect finding a body. This is a very good murder mystery and suspense. Lots of intriguing characters, an interesting plot and some sensual, steamy sex. Just enough twists to keep you on your toes. It’s a first for me by this author but I plan to go back and read the other books on this series.
Another well written story, part three in this very good series. The reason for the murders and the murderer were fairly unexpected. The MCs were lovely and the location is so beautiful. This can certainly be read as a standalone but it is very enjoyable to see characters from the earlier books again. I received a complimentary copy of this book and am happy to leave a voluntary review.
Deep Waters happens to be the third book in the Jagged Shore series, but it works just fine when read as a standalone or out of order. I hadn’t read this author before, but I’m glad the blurb for Deep Waters snagged my attention because I enjoyed the story and writing.
Deep Waters is a romantic suspense with an age gap romantic pairing. I’d definitely say the romance plays a major part in the plot, but the suspense storyline definitely holds its own and kept me completely engaged. I liked Christian and Harry and thought they made a solid couple. The romantic relationship between these two is rather straightforward, with the majority of the conflict stemming from the unexplained murders that keep happening in the smaller seaside town.
While I wouldn’t say Deep Waters is a romantic suspense filled with a lot of unexpected twists, it is really well done. The action scenes are well written, creating an exciting energy that made it hard to stop reading. Add in a thrilling culmination of events and a good resolution with Christian and Harry’s relationship, and I’d definitely say Deep Waters is worth the read if you enjoy romance and a good suspenseful mystery.

I really enjoyed this story. The mystery was very intriguing and the developing romance between Harry and Christian only added to the story. It was a great read.
This is the first book I've read by this author and I loved it, I will definitely be reading some more. It's got suspense, mystery, love, and wonderful characters. I loved Harry and Christian so much and they had great chemistry throughout the storyline.
Action and romance in the north east. I enjoyed Harry and Christian’s romance - the mutual attraction catapulted forward in the aftermath of Niko’s death. The savagery of the sea was portrayed well and the murderer suitably hidden until the end.
I love this series! It’s so well written, has such vivid imagery. The colorful characters feel like people you’ve known all your life. You can walk along the harbor with them and smell the sea and food from the many eateries. The action is always just right, not so much that it overwhelms the rest. For a small town, Nyemouth really has so much going on! I love that it’s not depicted as idyllic. It’s much more realistic to have at least a bit of a dark underbelly. And the men- oh, my! They make real connections and learn to know each other. I also love that it’s not all about youth or money. This series has turned into one of my favorites, to be read many times over.
