The 6 Habits of Growth

Rate this book
Listening Length: 5 hours and 4 minutes

The world’s leading high-performance coach and multiple New York Times best-selling author Brendon Burchard delivers the six habits of personal growth that will help you create the life of your dreams.

Those six habits are:

Motivation: Discover the three keys to lasting motivation. Learn how to diagnose and combat burnout. Find out the daily habits that increase motivation—and make them part of your morning routine.

Focus: Assess where you stand with respect to the 10 main areas of life—mental health, physical health, family, friends, finances, mission, spirit, adventure, learning, and growth—and commit to the desired improvements. Leverage the habit formation process. Capture daily insights via journaling and habit tracking.

Confidence: We all face self-doubt. Start to embrace it as a signal to learn—to prepare more, to get better, to ready yourself. Think of it as a catalyst, not an inhibitor. Step into your authenticity to feel more comfortable in social situations.

Energy: Learn revving and renewal practices that will fuel you for the life you want to lead. Drill down on meditation, exercise, diet, and sleep in an entirely new way.

Purpose: Don’t think that you have to have only one. Learn to make purpose smaller. Translate it into purposeful living—the everyday “points of purpose” that present opportunities for meaning and service..

Leadership: Discover how to enlist and persuade others to support your ideas; how to deal with conflict; and how to get everyone around you to perform at their best.

Forged from Brendon Burchard’s personal experiences, data from his GrowthDay app, and his many years as a high-performance coach, The 6 Habits of Growth presents the tools you need to construct the life of your dreams. Full of practical examples and narrated by Brendon Burchard himself, The 6 Habits of Growth is an Audible Original designed to get you unstuck and headed in the right direction.

This is like getting a motivational seminar from the author. It’s heavy on the inspirational stories and light on the tactics. It’s also completely on original with content you can get everywhere else, often with more tactical teeth to it. Not bad, but not remarkable either. For example, one of the keys to great habits is having motivation. Nothing about the science of motivation in the brain, nothing about the skills of self-management and only a general reminder to think about what matters daily.

This book is almost exactly the same as Tony Robbins' 'Get the Edge' programme on Spotify, some parts word for word. But the most annoying similarity of all, is that half the book is a sales pitch just telling you how much this person has changed the lives of millions of people and how many great things he’s done and people he’s worked with. I'm not kidding, this book is all filler, no killer. If he'd been told to take out the excessive self-congratulatory boasting, it could have been a pamphlet.
...Have you ever seen that South Park episode where the parents are in Aspen and they want to go skiing but they can’t get away from these sales reps trying to sell them a time share? That’s what this book is like.

Everything in this book is said better in every other self-help book. And it’s condescending… “you might feel this way sometimes… and that’s okay.” Couldn’t finish it.

It's incredibly difficult to look past the cringe presentation to the actual material to give a fair judgement. Brendan Burchard narrates his book, constantly throwing in filler words "like" and "you know", and pronouncing "probably" as "prolly".....in an attempt to feel more accessible perhaps? My face was mostly stuck in a cringe for the entirety of this listen.

Luckily, the first half of the book is convincing you how bad you need the book, so the actual content is pretty limited. While his principles themselves are solid (and really common sense) such as 'never stop learning', his constant plugs for his app and other products leave the whole thing feeling like one poorly presented commercial.

Between every sensible sentence is an hour of stories, usually about himself. You could garner 100% of the usefulness in this book by simply reading the title of the chapters. That is the limit of useful content, and the rest is just fillers.

I liked some of the emphasis on goal setting, diet and rest. Too much focus on positive affirmations

Burchard's writing style is engaging and easy to follow, making the book accessible to readers of all backgrounds. He eloquently introduces six fundamental habits that, when adopted and nurtured, lead to remarkable personal development. Each chapter is packed with practical advice, real-life examples, and thought-provoking exercises that encourage readers to reflect on their current habits and make meaningful changes.

The author's profound insights into the power of intention, discipline, and perseverance resonate deeply throughout the book. Burchard masterfully weaves in motivational stories of ordinary people who transformed their lives by adopting these habits, leaving readers inspired and motivated to take action.

What sets "6 Habits of Growth" apart is Burchard's emphasis on building a growth mindset and embracing challenges as opportunities for learning and development. The book instills a sense of empowerment, reminding readers that they have the capacity to shape their own destinies through intentional choices and consistent effort.

Another aspect I appreciated about this book is Burchard's genuine empathy and understanding for the struggles and setbacks that can hinder personal growth. His compassionate approach serves as a reassuring companion for those facing roadblocks on their journey to self-improvement

I was surprised by this book. I’m not a big fan of most business books because I feel like it’s 50 pages of content and 150 pages of fluff. But this 6 Habits book provided value periodically throughout the book.

It’s an audiobook and a lot of it is Brendon just riffing on topics. But he’s a damn good speaker, has some really interesting leadership insights and presents then in a compelling and easy to understand way.

It is a really short book so easy to get through. For anybody looking to grow their leadership abilities, it’s worth a listen. Inevitably there will be two or three valuable takeaways that could alter your habits.

Basically a 5 hr. long form Ted Talk, with some nice and simple practical tips for increasing mindfulness, focus, and productivity overall.

Not much I hadn't heard before in this, but for a shorter message on these topics I'd say this is a great audiobook for anyone looking to start thinking differently about their own growth and mindset.

I'm typically inclined to share positive feedback, and it's not often I feel compelled to pen a review, especially a critical one. However, this book challenges that norm for me.

It's perplexing to see a demand for a book of this nature, especially when luminaries like Brian Tracy and Brené Brown have already explored and greatly contributed to this subject. They've conducted in-depth research and have pioneered several concepts in this domain, which makes them deserving of all accolades. Comparatively, Mr. Brendon Burchard's addition feels superfluous—akin to a fifth wheel on a car. While he frequently references personal anecdotes, such as his accident and his humble beginnings in a small apartment, it seems more like an attempt to give credibility to repackaged ideas rather than original insights.

If this book is seen as groundbreaking or particularly helpful, I fear for the discernment of our readership. To me, it feels like a reiteration without introducing anything novel or compelling. I'd advise potential readers to consider other sources for fresh perspectives. This work, regrettably, felt like a trite rendition with vernacular reminiscent of outdated carnival pitches. Save your time and seek enlightenment elsewhere.

Pretty excellent read that's very succinct with lots of information.

What I got from it:
1. In the morning want to read something positive, write out your goals/journal for the day, and meditate. 5 minutes dedicated for each.

2. MEDS daily: meditation, exercise, diet, sleep

3. Whenever you are lacking focus or motivation, think about who needs you to show up ready and prepared today (ie family, team, clients).

4. Whenever feeling nervous take in more breaths.

5. Your purpose doesn't have to be one thing, it can change each year. For example, one year your purpose could be to build a library, the next it could be to take care of your parent.

6. Ask yourself, if I was a role model what would the next step be in my behaviour.

7. Sleep routine: No food 3h before bed, no work 2h before bed, no screens 1h before bed.

8. Sometimes we lack confidence not because we are inadequate or lacking in an area, but simply because we haven't had enough repetitions in it.

*Audible audiobook only *Listening to a book is a nice change of pace and a perfect morning listen on my walk to work. Could it be a great listen for you as well?

This was an extended personal development seminar. The 6 habits are:

1. MOTIVATION
2. FOCUS
3. CONFIDENCE
4. ENERGY
5. PURPOSE
6. LEADERSHIP

Burchard goes in depth in each habit giving you actions, and check-ins; places where you might be weak and can strengthen. I have read self-growth books before and this one didn't share anything new, per se. How he said his message was new. He was engaging and made me feel motivated to continue to work on myself, the flawed human being I am. My weakest habits are confidence and leadership. My strongest habits are purpose and focus. If you listen to this book, I"d love to talk with you about it. Maybe DM me or leave a comment about which habit you want to work on or which one you are strong it. This book is meant to be shared, which is why I rated it 4 stars.

6 Habits: motivation, focus, confidence, energy, purpose, leadership.
This is a short audible original we listened to for our office leadership team book club. It is not a book, he is a prolific inspirational speaker and he sat down and just recorded essentially that without notes. It was good for listening to an unwritten presentation, but it certainly could have been more polished had it been thru an editing process.
There were sections that really didn’t add much to the many things like this I’ve read, but there were some great bits in the final section on Leadership, and I thought the exercise of rating oneself in the 10 categories of the Focus section was beneficial bc I actually wrote it down so I could see and compare my numbers. I was also able to have some good discussions on that section.

Brendon Burchard, as always, did not disappoint with this wholesome audible original.
For people who have read High Performance Habits: How Extraordinary People Become That Way (my intro to Brendon when I became a fan), this is a great refresher but still with a number of additional insights. Brendon solidifies some hard-hitting concepts and if applied, can truly be life-changing.

The concepts and habits are all solid and align with many other teachings. Oddly, I both liked and was slightly off put by the adlib nature. He's not reading his book, he's talking from the hip off notes. It's impressive he can create a ~6 hour audio book adlib but there are a few head tilts that result.

Certainly worth the listen and I'll dig into more of his content as a result of listening.

Overall pretty motivational. The author’s voice was grating on me at first, seemed too dramatic and cheesy. But as it went on I started to think the author was really quite genuine and just one of those people who is super enthused. It was impressive that apparently he was just basically giving a talk, not reading, the whole time. Lots of really good examples and tips for growing and living a good life. Not my favorite in this genre but good, for sure.

⭐️3.3 - Audible

This is my first inspirational “you can be better” book and I think he had a point. A good book to listen to at work and it’s interesting to hear the little habits that he did daily to better himself.

Free on Audible - Worth a listen

Terrible- it’s almost a parody of itself. I didn’t finish it after the first half because the self aggrandizing tone of un-investigated white-male-class privilege is to hard to sift through to get any actual message. It read like a commercial that never got to the point of what it was selling.

I recommend reading with pencils, pens, highlighters and a notebook to take notes and really let it soak in. This guy makes a lot of good sense. If you listen on audible, go through it once and take notes the 2nd time through.
