Mitchell has written a helpful book. The book is concerned with the fact that, in Joshua, there are commands and depictions of the eradication of the inhabitants of Canaan, while the text also portrays many of the inhabitants as having survived, some favorably. Mitchell argues for theological and literary purposes behind the language of holy war in the text, and shows the possible sociological motivations for such presentations.
