Rate this book
This is your atonement.

When detectives find the same message at the staged scenes of four seemingly unrelated homicides, FBI Special Agent Victoria Heslin is determined to uncover the connection between them.

The deaths are scattered across the East Coast. The victims are in their late twenties: an All-Star NBA player, an investment banker, a dental hygienist, and a bartender with a serious drinking problem.

Who is making them pay? What have they done? And who might be next?

Spending weeks away from home, Agent Victoria delves into the victims’ pasts, unraveling the strange mystery that links them together. As the killer’s motive becomes clear, Victoria is in a race to the finish that she must not lose.

Absolutely engrossing story of how teenage actions can effect us for our entire lives. I liked how three dimensional the main players were, I felt like I knew who each of them were. Definitely highly recommend this mystery, and now I need to start at the beginning of the series.

I loved this book, its the type of book that will keep you up at night trying to find out who the killer is. This is the seventh outing out with Victoria and although it is written as a stand alone, I love the series and recommend you get to know Victoria Heslin, as she is a Special agent for a reason. Each book is totally different from the last, different cases even different situations but one thing is the same they never fail to keep you entertained, guessing and even a hostage until the very end. Victoria is a great main character and could go up against any of the tv detectives and hold her own. The story is all about the murders, with very little home life drama to get in the way but that's not to same the characters aren't well developed because they are, even the killer you end up feeling sympathy for. The story jumps around a bit, giving you insight into the killer and also the victims but I think it actually enhances the story, as things start to get explained. A master story teller at work and one of the many reasons why this author is up there as one of my favourites.
For FBI Special Agent Victoria Heslin being called into her boss's office feels like being summoned by the principle but she is not in trouble, in fact he assigns her a new high profile case. An All-star NBA player is found murdered in his own home, after hosting a party. But he isn't the first victim. Two months earlier, a victim was discovered dead in his bathtub. The connection, the words written on the walls above the bodies 'THIS IS YOUR ATONEMENT'. The methods and victim are very different and all the suspect has motive to kill one but not both men. It's up to Victoria to discover the connection and capture the killer before anybody else is killed. Will she see the big picture in time?

When old wounds fester…

Newly engaged FBI Agent Victoria Heslin is called away from her fiancé to investigate two murders where the victims seem to have nothing in common save for the identical messages left near their bodies indicating that their deaths are an atonement for some wrong they committed. Apparently, some old wounds have festered to the point of requiring fatal retaliation. Before any real headway is made, the case becomes increasingly convoluted when more bodies drop and Victoria, herself, seems to have attracted the unwanted attention of the killer. What unfolds is a well-plotted mystery full of tension, suspense, and misdirection that held my undivided attention right up to the end. The plot is credible, the characters are convincing, and the periodic dashes of humor make for the perfect accent to this very dramatic story. As with all the books in this wonderful series, it could be completely enjoyed as a standalone but there are references to various people and events that link this story with the others. I highly recommend this book and the entire series to any enthusiast of murder mysteries, serial killer stories and police procedurals.

I was provided with an advance copy of this book, for which I thank the author, but I am sharing my honest and unbiased review on a completely voluntary basis.

I read Vanished On Vacation a few months ago and really enjoyed it, so I was excited to get into the next book in this series. This one focuses on the investigation of multiple murders that appear to be related because of a message at the crime scenes - "This is your atonement". How are they related though and what does the message mean?

This one didn't grip me nearly as much as the previous book did, and I thought that final page reveal was pretty obvious early on. I still found this to be an overall enjoyable read though, and I will most likely continue on with this series in the future.

This was my first Agent Victoria Heslin book. Now I have to catch up and read the priors. Fortunately you don't need to have read any of them to follow story. I really enjoyed reading this twisty thriller. FBI Agent Victoria is working on the Atonement Murders. Several seeming unrelated Murders have had a message left at the murder site. "THIS IS YOUR ATTONEMENT" What do these people have in common???Agent Victoria figures it out but will it be too late??? No spoilers from me, just read it .You won't be able to put it down or be disappointed!

This was okay. I’d give it four stars for not having the obligatory scenes of the detective being put in danger before resolution. But it wasn’t a highly compelling story for me. I listened to it while doing chores. So, moderately entertaining if a bit draggy. The climax to the story was a bit ho-hum. I did like the protagonist and her team, however. I will read more from this series, perhaps just moving forward from this seventh in series. I know there’s at least one before where her life was in danger. Not entertained by that trope.

Book: The Atonement Murders
Author: Jenifer Ruff
Series: Agent Victoria Heslin Thriller #7
Publisher: BooksGoSocial
Genre: Mystery/Thriller
Pub Date: April 14, 2022
My Rating: 4 stars

FBI Agent Victoria Heslin is investigating two murders, one in Boston, one in Charlotte. The Boston victim was an NBA superstar athlete; the Charlotte victim was a former classmate/teammate of the superstar.
When their bodies were found, the phrase “This Is Your Atonement” was written in lipstick near the bodies. Later, another seemingly unrelated murder victim marked with that phrase is discovered.
Story kept me interested. As a thriller fan I know to suspect everyone but the ‘Excerpt from Journal Entry’ made it rather clear the murderer was someone who knew the victims ~ had a connection from the past. Even with that it kept me guessing!

In addition to a great story I always love reading the Author’s ‘Acknowledgements’ as well as other info provided at the back of the book. Always looking for the inside scoop to the author’s motivation etc.

In her “Note from the Author” Ms. Ruff tells readers that although ‘Agent Victoria Heslin’ is part of a series, she writes each book so that the readers can read them alone without confusion.

Awww since I haven’t read all the books in this series ~ I was pleased with her writing style!
This was a great read and I look forward to #8!

When I read my first Jenifer Ruff Victoria Heslin story ~ Vanished on Vacation ~
My comment was:
I am so delighted to find a new author that I love ~ I certainly am looking forward to The Atonement Murders Victoria Heslin Thriller #7!

The Atonement Murders by Jenifer Ruff is a very highly recommended mystery/procedural and the seventh novel in the series featuring FBI Special Agent Victoria Heslin.
When NBA player Jerome Smith is found murdered in Boston with the words "This Is Your Atonement" written in lipstick on the wall, FBI Special Agent Victoria Heslin is assigned to the case. But this was not the first murder. Two months before this in Charlotte Todd Eckstrom was found murdered with the same message written on the wall. The two men knew each other and were friends since high school, so it seems perhaps the murders were related to some event in their shared past. Then two sisters are murdered with the same message written on the wall but seemingly no connection to the first two.

The Atonement Murders is a well written mystery/procedural that intelligently follows the investigation and sets a fast pace that will hold your attention throughout. The narrative is mainly set in the present day following Victoria and the evidence uncovered, with some chapters set twelve years ago when Todd and Jerome were teens. There are also occasionally shorts excerpts from the killer's journal. The motivation and identity of the murderer is not clear until the end. All the clues and connections are logical and compelling in the investigation. There are no improbably twists.

I really enjoyed The Atonement Murders and as described, it truly is a standalone investigation which concludes at the end. This was my first book in the series and I enjoyed it so much that I now I need to read the previous books. Victoria Heslin is a wonderful, appealing, insightful character. She approaches her investigation with logic, intelligence, and care, plus she loves animals. It was really a pleasure being introduced to her.

I would like to thank Netgalley and BooksGoSocial for an advance copy of The Atonement Murders, the seventh novel to feature FBI Agent Victoria Heslin.

The murder of a basketball ball player brings Victoria to her latest case. He is the second person to be found with the message “This is your atonement” written on the wall. Another two murders follow and it is Victoria’s job to work out what links the victims and what they have to atone for.

I enjoyed The Atonement Murders, which is a relatively straightforward plot driven novel with several twists and a neat but guessable final twist. I have not read the previous novels in the series, so I can say that this works easily as a stand-alone.

The novel is mostly told in the present from Victoria’s point of view interspersed with flashbacks to events from twelve years ago told from the various victims’ points of view. I’m not particularly interested in the thoughts and actions of teenagers, but these flashbacks slowly build a story of why the murders are occurring. Of course, the reader has to wade through copious amounts of teenage hormones and angst to get there.

As I said this is a plot driven novel, so it’s not particularly nuanced or deep. It follows the usual route of one development leading to another until a solution is found. There are few roadblocks on this route, although there is a certain amount of jumping to conclusions. On the whole it all falls into place rather serendipitously. Having said that, I would stress that it is entertaining and an easy way to pass a few hours.

By the end of the novel I felt slightly sorry for the perpetrator, who has a terrible backstory, but again the reasons for murder are based on very shaky ground so murder was not the answer.

The Atonement Murders is an easy way to pass a few hours.

If you're a fan of gripping psychological thrillers with a strong female lead, The Atonement Murders by Jenifer Ruff is a must-read. This is the seventh installment in the Agent Victoria Heslin series, but don't worry if you're new to the series—each book stands alone, and this one is no exception.
The story kicks off with a chilling message—"THIS IS YOUR ATONEMENT"—left at the scenes of four seemingly unrelated murders. FBI Special Agent Victoria Heslin is on the case, determined to uncover the connection between the victims: an NBA star, an investment banker, a dental hygienist, and a bartender. As she delves deeper, long-buried secrets come to light, and the suspense keeps building.

Ruff's writing is sharp and engaging, pulling you into a world of mystery and intrigue. The pacing is spot-on, with twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end. Victoria Heslin is a compelling protagonist—intelligent, determined, and relatable. Her character adds depth to the story, making it more than just a typical crime thriller.
What I appreciate most about this book is how it balances a complex plot with character development. The narrative doesn't just focus on solving the crime; it also explores the emotional and psychological aspects of the characters involved. This adds layers to the story, making it a more satisfying read.
In summary, The Atonement Murders is a well-crafted thriller that delivers on all fronts: suspense, character development, and a compelling plot. Whether you're a longtime fan of the series or a newcomer, this book is sure to keep you hooked from start to finish.
📖 The Atonement Murders is available now in paperback and Kindle editions.
Happy reading! 📚✨

What an intricate, well-crafted mystery!

In North Carolina, a real estate agent walks into a showing to find the current owner dead in the bathtub, with "THIS IS YOUR ATONEMENT" written on the mirror of the scene.

Two months later, an NBA star is found dead in his home in Boston with the same message.

The state officials contact the FBI as these two very different men have very similar crime scenes. Enter Agent Victoria Heslin.

This is my first in the Victoria Heslin series, and I really appreciated being able to read this as a stand-alone. Much of her past was referenced, but not stressed upon to where you felt confused if you were just entering this FBI agent's world.

I really enjoyed the pacing of this novel and how all the pieces came together in such a natural way. None of the clues or leads seemed forced, which made reading it all the more exciting. Heslin herself is a wonderful character and not only did I love her detective work, but I loved her as a person. All of the references to her past definitely have me wanting to go back and start the series from the beginning as it seems like she has gone through some crazy things!

Overall, I loved this mystery. I thought the chain of events that led to the killer's actions were laid out perfectly, and while I did have a hunch about a big twist, enough happened that had me questioning my guess, which I loved.

Definitely enjoyed my time reading this story and I'm looking forward to reading more by Ruff in the future!

Thank you to NetGalley & BooksGoSocial for the ARC in exchange for an honest review :)

Hey there! If you are looking for a great Psychological Thriller, get yourself a copy of The Atonement Murders by Jennifer Ruff. This is actually book seven in the Agent Victoria Heslin Thriller series. You don’t have to worry about picking this book up without reading the other six. It will read well as a stand alone although it does refer back to her past and there are characters from the other books like her family and her fiance’ and co-workers. I haven’t read the first two books even though I do own them. I will!

This book was so good. It was fast paced and kept me turning the pages. Ms. Ruff does not give anything away before you need to know. She keeps you guessing right from the beginning on who, what, where, when and why. I kept trying to figure out who the murderer was and why. The clues were adding up but they didn’t go together like I thought they would. Genius!

I like Victoria Heslin. She is an FBI agent and as I’ve mentioned we do get to know her quite well as we go through the books. You will find yourself worried for her and rooting for her to find the last piece of the puzzle. She owns 7 greyhounds and the author has her own pack at home that helps her write her books.

So! Like I said, if you’re looking for a great book to keep you entertained and to lose yourself in, I would highly recommend reading this book. Then go back and read the first six! I know you’re gonna love the series as much as I do. Until next time…Happy Reading!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

The Atonement Murders is the seventh novel in the Victoria Heslin series.

Agent Victoria Heslin is investigating a series of murders, spanning multiple cities. The murder scenes are terrifying and gruesome, with oddities that are difficult to explain. Missing toothbrushes? Missing patches of hair among some victims, but not all? However, there is one common theme among all of the murders. Each scene contains the chilling phrase, “This is your Atonement”. Heslin must work quickly to uncover the deep rooted vendetta of the killer, before he or she can strike again!

With her usual flair, Ruff crafts a thriller that is both interesting and fast moving! As the reader, we travel back in time as Heslin unearths the deep psychological roots of the killer’s heart and mind. I had no idea where the novel would end up, but I knew I wanted to be along for the ride. This was a fascinating and quick read that I would highly recommend to my friends and family!!

I received an ARC of the novel and this is my honest and unbiased review.

This book was the seventh book in the Agent Victoria Heslin thrillers. I normally don't read a book from a series out of sequence but, luckily, it was perfectly fine as a standalone.

In the story, Agent Heslin is working some cases that are linked by the killer's use of the words "THIS IS YOUR ATONEMENT" at the crime scene. Connecting the dots, she discovers all of the victims were connected through a shared vacation spot twelve years earlier. Once she figures out who is behind all of it - and, more importantly, why - she cracks the case....but not without a lot of thrilling drama in the meantime.

This book will definitely have you on the edge of your seat! I will admit, though, that some of the story seemed implausible to me...but I would have to spoil the plot to explain why, so we won't go there. Just suffice it to say I was 85% satisfied with the way things wrapped up. I do want to read more of the Victoria Heslin series just to see how her other stories stack up. The writing is solid and held my interest the entire time.

Thank you Suzy Approved Book Tours and Jenifer Ruff for my spot on tour and gifted copy!

My first book by Jenifer Ruff and I'm going to hand her all my money to read the rest of this series!! I LOVED the plot, FBI Special Agent Victoria Heslin, her love for Starbucks, and the setting! I always enjoy seeing cities and places I've lived referenced in a book. Dulles airport is about 35 minutes form where I live now and I used to live in North Carolina.
Even though this is the seventh book in the series, you would never know there was a series to begin with. Jenifer Ruff's writing was flawless and this book could definitely be read as a standalone. She references to Victoria's past just enough for the reader to get to know her better as a character. I also enjoyed the brief journal entries written by the killer throughout the book. Very fun and kept me addicted to continue reading to figure out who the killer was.
I don't read a lot of thriller series, but this one I have to go back and read from the beginning. Highly recommend THE ATONEMENT MURDERS!

The Atonement Murders by Jenifer Ruff is the seventh book in the Agent Victoria Heslin Thriller Series. Even though this is book seven in a series, Jenifer Ruff’s writing style makes each book a stand alone!! This is a well written and plotted murder/mystery that will keep you reading way past your bedtime. Jenifer Ruff knows how to tell a great story! I was blown away and hooked from the start. I really liked Agent Victoria Heslin's character and her determination to solve these cases. It was also fun to read about lots of places in Charlotte, NC that I am familiar with. The ending was shocking and nothing I would have guessed. That is always a plus for me. THE ATONEMENT MURDERS is book #7 in the Agent Victoria Heslin series. The author has written them all as standalones, so you can read them in any order. I definitely recommend THE ATONEMENT MURDERS, especially if you like crime/thrillers as much as I do.

Many thanks to Jennifer Ruff for my ARC and @suzybooktours for having me on this book tour.

The Atonement Murders, the seventh book in the Agent Victoria Heslin series, is a very good mystery/police procedural. FBI Special Agent Victoria Heslin is assigned to the murder of an NBA player in Boston. The killer left a message written in lipstick. Upon investigation, Heslin learns that two months prior another murder with the same message took place in Charlotte. Rushing to find the common denominator, Victoria learns that the men were high school friends. Unfortunately, two more murders are committed with that same message. As always, Heslin will approach this investigation with logic. As with all the novels in this series, this is an amazing installment. The characters are all well-written and the twists and turns will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. A must read. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The book is satisfying on a basic level. Assortment of characters, a bit of reaching to tie those people together, contrast between the main's hectic work life and serene personal world. Makes for a quick, easy read/listen.
If you're looking for real intrigue, though, and have resolved to avoid the too-common somewhat lazy, unrealistic resolutions, don't bother. The killer went far beyond what she could have reasonably done, without anyone noticing, especially because of who she killed. It was a yawn once it was figured out, and I think the author had to add to word count to drag out the explanation. Just not remotely believable--that the girl would've been punished so severely (for something not illegal, and not done on school grounds, etc--just NO), or that the killer would need such high-level revenge. It didn't ring true for a second. So, eh.

I have found a new must buy author after reading this mystery book.

Even though this is the 7th book in the series featuring FBI agent, Victoria Heslin, each book has a stand alone mystery.

I read this book in a day and the mystery and twists were perfect. I loved learning a bit about Victoria as a person and will be going back to read all the backlist books I’m missing.

There are four victims in three different cities with the only similarity being a message written above each victim saying- This Is Your Atonement.

All the victims are in their late 20s and one of the victims is a famous NBA player with the Boston Celtics.

Victoria is brought in to try to find the connection between these four people and find the killer.

well written murder mystery that keeps you guessing

This is my first Victoria Heslin book but it won’t be my last. My favorite author is Harlan Coben but Jenifer Ruff is now on my list. The author keeps you guessing until nearly the end and, even then, throws a little question into what surely must have happened. The characters are all well defined. Even though the murders happen early on, through flashbacks, you learn to love the characters even now deceased. There were some points in the book, like when Victoria is going down into a creepy cellar, that the author really puts you on the edge of your seat. This is an excellent murder mystery with a number of twists to keep you guessing.

I listened to the audiobook by Greyt Companion Press, narrated by Kate Handford.

3 stars. Competent writing, decently fleshed-out characters. I liked the basic premise that a stupid mistake in high school can affect your whole life. I agree with an earlier Commenter that I appreciate that Victoria‘s life wasn’t put in danger in this one, as it has been in several earlier books. To quote, “I’m tired of that trope.”
Not believable that the murderer could have carried out the murder of the very famous basketball player. I personally didn’t like how much of Victoria’s personal life with Ned was woven into the story; I’m more interested in the mystery and the police procedure than the domestic drama.
I plan to continue the series.

I received an ARC copy of this book and this is my honest review. The next book in Jenifer Ruff’s Agent Victoria Heslin series, The Atonement Murders, has her working a new case after recently becoming engaged. Soon she is off to Boston, then to North Carolina where she begins to connect the murders and look for a motive. Once you start one of Jenifer Ruff’s books, don’t plan to do anything else till you complete it. I always carve out time and look forward to reading her books. As mentioned, the book is part series but can be read alone. You will want to read the others though if you haven’t. I’m already looking forward to her next book!

The Atonement Murders - a review by Rosemary Kenny.

Book 7 in Jenifer Ruff's excellent Agent Victoria Heslin Mystery-Thriller series, is the intriguingly-titled The Atonement Murders.
What crime have the four disparate young murder victims committed, to deserve such deaths? That is the '$64,000 question' Victoria must answer, even if it puts her in great danger.

Red herrings, reflections from the past, a life-changing incident connecting the victims, and elements of Victoria's own life, are cleverly interspersed with action, terror and a rivetingly-different serial-killer investigation, that's sure to grip you firmly by the imagination throughout.

Lock your doors and turn off the phone, as you'll want to finish Jenifer Ruff's unputdownable novel, The Atonement Murders, in one go.

Wow! Look at me... recommending a thriller/mystery! This book is fantastic! My first by this author and book 7 in an ongoing series, but I never felt like I missed a thing. The writing is so smooth and keeps you engaged. I found the MC to be so relatable!

FBI agent Victoria Heslin is investigating a series of murders. THIS IS YOUR ATONEMENT- was the message left on the wall of each crime scene. Victoria is attempting to connect the dots and figure out what these seemingly random victims have in common. What are they atoning for? What's the motive here? I didn't see the answer coming! Such a great read!

I love Agent Victoria Heslin Series. In my opinion The Atonement Murders is a great continuation of the Agent Victoria Heslin Series. There were many stories taking place in the book, Victoria and Ned's, Victoria and her family, the victim's stories, all the teenager's stories and the murder's story. I had many of the things that happened in the story figured out and also the murder and the second culprit . This story kept me on the edge of my seat reading. My biggest complaint was it became a slow in some of the areas. I felt sometimes my attention was pulled in a lot of different way. Overall I enjoyed The Atonement Murders.

I normally shy away from series because I feel like I would have to start from the beginning and read them all in order but Ruff does a great job sprinkling in the backstories without having it feel like you missed something huge.

This book hooked me from the start and read very much like a show I might choose. There was no lull in the story and although she set the scene very well the writing isn't too descriptive. The MC is a strong female with a tough job while trying to manage her new relationship at home.

Overall, a great quick mystery and I look forward to reading more from Ruff!

I'm so impressed with the caliber of Jenifer's writing and I can't believe I haven't read any of her previous books. This is book 7 in the FBI Special Agent Victoria Heslin series, but totally works as a standalone novel. It opens with an intriguing murder scene and I was immediately hooked. The short chapters, compelling characters, and the gradual unveiling of clues had me turning the pages long into the night. I'm so excited to explore her backlist and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

I found a kindred spirit in FBI Agent Victoria Heslin - she loves Starbucks! And seeing that this is book seven of the series, I bet there’s even more I’d love about her if I’d go back and catch up on her backstory - but don’t worry, this is a standalone.

I thoroughly enjoyed this, with all the different murders and methods the killer used, but all had the same creepy message. I highly recommend this one if you love a good whodunnit!
