CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.

In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.

In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.

Everything comes from people mixing and revolving around each other. People living alongside each other and influencing each other. Even in the most trivial meetings, one changes body and soul.
Once again, my reading this manga piecemeal over a few years has caught me short a bit, as I barely remembered who Kohane was, or the situation with her mother. The first two-thirds or so of this volume reintroduces this familial conflict, and brings it to a head so that Kohane can move on to the next step of her life. There are also a couple of crossover scenes with Reservoir Chronicle, one directly involving Sakura and Syaoran, and another one that's more indirect, involving the .

Each time that I've come back to this series, I've been struck with the bonds between the characters that go far beneath their day-to-day surface. The quote above is an example of that outlook. The idea of people changing each other through their interactions isn't unusual, but that change also affecting them physically is, or at least I haven't seen it in fiction before. In the context of the story, we have Kimihiro and Doumeki's eyes as an example of a bond or connection that has created a physical change in both of them.

This series has really grown on me. The first few books actually annoyed me. I was not familiar with the writing phenomena known as Clamp, and so was surprised to learn that this book crosses over with another of their own creation: Tsubasa. In volume 1-3 there is quite a bit of what felt like fanservice to me, and I was often lost as I've never read the stories referenced (namely Card Capture: Sakura).

However, once this apparent glee at their ability to cross two separate series seemed to fade, and the authors focused on the plot, I became absolutely entranced. The characters developed in ways I never expected, and Watanuki in particular really changes right before your eyes. It is done so subtly and so poignantly that by the time I realised what had happened, I actually went back to re-read my favourite stories in order to remember how he was. He's that kind of character; he touches you, and you're almost proud of his personal growth.

The supernatural stories throughout the series are really something. Some of them are rehashings of universal ghost stories, whilst others are deeply moving. There have been a few that brought a tear to my eye, and more that I have re-read to enjoy all over again.

Ultimately, I feel like this series has really grown into itself. It's a wonderful read and I hope it continues to improve.

Oh, wow. I really didn't expect ~that~ to be the reason why Watanuki's losing his memories. This series is getting more and more intriguing by the volume. I hope that the authors behind Clamp know where they are headed with this, that they can deliver and do justice to the anticipation they are building there. Another thing that I really loved in this volume was that Watanuki's finally starting to accept Domeki's protectiveness, that he's starting to rely on him as a friend. It's a nice character development!

Wow I am so super not excited about the elevated child abuse going on YAY.
But fingers crossed for happy endings, sheesh.

The 13th volume and we are definitely nearing the end of it all. Tons of foreshadowing this time, not just with things that everyone is saying or the silent stares, but also with Sakura and Syaoran (and hey the other Syaoran) popping up. This time we get a closure to the Kohane-chan arc. Watanuki and Domeki are undergoing action to help out Kohane because the abuse and the stuff people do are getting out of hand. People are really terrible. I get that you may think that Kohane is wrong (though she is not, and I am glad that she is sticking to her story and told that woman what she knows), but that doesn't give you the right to terrorise this girl, hurt her, destroy her home. Also that mother is just terrible. I can kind of see how she slid down the slope, but still dang. I love the bond that Kohane and Watanuki have. It is just so sweet.
I am glad what Kohane was able to wish, and I had totally forgotten about THAT. Oh wow. Yep, things are going broken and it is coming fast.
I can't wait to continue reading. But do I read it all now? Or save it up for the next coming days? Decisions, decisions. 4 >5 stars.

///////////

la dvd me sigue sin gustar la kohane, y la historia no tiene tan buena resolución, menos en comparación a dónde iba ya la historia de Wata.

Review for complete series

xxxHolic is not the type of manga that I would usually pick up - somehow, stories about stores with special services have never really caught my interests. As it happens to be a CLAMP manga which is heavily interwoven with Tsubasa and also has ties to Blood C, I knew I'd at the very least have to give it a chance. The good thing is, apart from the ending, it's a pretty neat manga series.

Watanuki has always attracted ghosts and spirits and he wishes they would just go away. Fate leads him to Yuko's wish-granting shop, but wishes don't come for free. In order for Watanuki's wish to be granted, he must work in the store and becomes involved in all manners of the supernatural.

The art is easily recognisable as CLAMP's, yet it is different. Everything is in black and whites with no greyscales and the characters' eyes are rather empty looking, even the covers are anything but vibrant. But this is actually very well suited for the atmosphere of this series. I only wish that, similar to Tsubasa, the characters' limbs weren't so unnaturally long.

What I first thought to be a rather bland set of characters soon turned out to be a much deeper and very likeable bunch. It's odd, I was against every character from the start and I can't even put my finger on when it changed, but I ended up loving them all. I must confess, I preferred the first three-quarters of the story more - Watanuki becomes a more serious character after certain events and I just prefered him the way he was before. That being said, I can understand how and why he changed.

Although there is an underlying story that is interlaced with Tsubasa, the rest of the series is very much episodic. The different episodes all revolve around legends and myths and it's very interesting to read about them. Not only are the origins explained, but given the modern setting of this series, they are always shown with a contemporary sample. I am only guessing here, but I feel as though having visited Japan and recognising various elements increased my enjoyment of this series as it really is very heavy on Japanese-lore. This holds particularly true about the Jorougumo chapters - there's just something very unsettling about these joro spiders.

The story can be a little slow at times but it generally has good pacing. It's a nice balance between humour, horror and a bit of moral lecturing - in a good way. Unfortunately, as is often the case, the ending isn't exactly satisfying. In fact, it's not that much of an ending at all; would I not know that this series is complete with 19 volumes, I'd think there is more to come. Thanks to its episodic nature, this series can in a sense conclude at any time it wants to. Yet the underlying story is left hanging in the air and there's nothing in terms of closure. CLAMP has started a sequel (which is one of their many works on hiatus - surprise!) which may or may not remedy this issue at some point, but for that, one will need to wait for the sequel to conclude. Otherwise, there are a few glimpses of Watanuki in Blood C which I feel not that many people know of - have a look if you care to see more of what happened to Watanuki post xxxHolic!

So now we get an explanation of why Watanuki couldn’t remember certain things, like his parents’ names— though I’m curious whose futures he’s protecting... So does this mean all those times that Watanuki was dream hopping was his brain’s way of adjusting after his memories were taken..? Somehow I get a feeling we won’t ever know what the dream sequence part was really all about...

I also loved this expanded version of Kohane’s story, and I think it’s a real shame that the anime didn’t include all of it. Bc I wasn’t a huge fan of her story in the anime, especially since it took up so much of the episodes, but here in the manga it was definitely worth it.

I am really curious why the fabric of space/time is being affected... is it bc if that one bad guy they’ve mentioned a couple times, the one who was harvesting souls with those creepy wing parasite things?? I guess we’ll find out...

Kohane's story is finally wrapped in this volume. Violence escalates, and we see her stand up to her mom. It went as well as I expected, but it was still a relief to know that she's got hope for a better life now.

I will say, I initially disliked the conclusion. The mom is a price of shit and I would NEVER let her near her kid again. BUT the start of the next volume clarifies that Kohane will not immediately be sent to her mom.

(ALSO I did not see the feather thing coming. I am...so curious as to what the implications will mean..)

It seems like the dream thing in last volume was mostly connected to the Tsubasa storyline, thank fuck. I'm excited for the series direction again.

Volume 12 felt so long. Volume 13 felt so short. It was all focused on Kohane and Watanuki, and I loved it. Watanuki has grown so much. I'm not sure how old Kohane is since she looks so much like a young girl and I don't know if the relationship between her and Watanuki is going to turn romantic but it's nice seeing how much they support each other.

This story was closely connected to Tsubasa Chronicle in which we learned that Sakura's feathers can grant people powers. Kohane's powers were enhanced due to the feather. Now it's kept safe by Mokona. It'll probably be useful later.

Five more volumes to go, and I really wonder what else will happen before the bittersweet ending.

The blurb gives all the summary that can be given without relating the whole darn thing, and a touch more than I would have wanted as a reader going into the volume personally, so I won't waste any time summarizing here.

CLAMP does a fantastic job demonstrating the growth of the various characters here. The art continues vivid, and powerful, and unique, and Kimihiro demonstrates a simple, real heroism/humanity that is as great as anything demonstrated by more classic Manga heroes.

When Watanuki hears that Kohane has been injured onscreen, he and Domeki hurry to protect her from the wrath of her clients and mother - but even if they can finally free her from the public eye, can she make the right wish to free herself from the weight of her powers? CLAMP brings fans an emotional entry, thoughtful and shocking and sure to have readers chilled start to finish. Where does Kohane belong...if anywhere at all...?

Watanuki is proving to be a very caring person. He's even being nicer to Dômeki, but still bickering humorously on occasion. I'm so surprised that a feather was found in the medium girl. It's all coming together with the events in Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles. I can't wait to see how it all transpires on this side of the story!
