I Hate Nate

Rate this book
Thousands of women think Nate Jones is the biggest jerk in Vancouver.
Can he prove them wrong?

Nate Jones is on top of the world. He’s a hot prospect on the Vancouver Vice hockey team, and his love life is even hotter. Then—boom—disaster strikes. When a big group of women boo and jeer him during a game, he’s blindsided. The bad publicity leads to him being scratched from the team, and now he’s desperate to find out which ex-girlfriend started the “I Nate Hate” campaign and get her to stop.

But he’s clueless about how to find his ex because there are so many. Enter Camille Salang, the closest thing he has to a female friend—only because she refuses to go out with him. Camille can’t stand Nate—he’s an egotistical bro who dates only Asian women. However she owes him for rescuing her from a messy breakup and an even messier job firing. And she does love solving mysteries.

As they work together to find the mystery woman, familiarity breeds…attraction. When Nate evolves from a clueless hockey hunk to someone sweeter and more enlightened, Camille can’t resist him. Nate’s always been into Camille, but now he appreciates her drive and intelligence too. Yet as they grow closer, will her reluctance to commit and his messy past pull them apart?

Canadian author - CHECK.
Hockey - CHECK.
Romance - CHECK.
Will they, won't they couple - CHECK.

Is Melanie Ting just writing for me, or like... is she just that good? Secret, it's the second... but we can all pretend she'd just writing for Briar if you really want to.

I Hate Nate is a rom-com that packs a punch (get it? Hockey pun?). Nate Jones is a semi-famous hockey player playing for the Vancouver Vice. He loves Asian chicks (he has a type, and sure it's kind of racist), and he has screwed them over one too many times.... Because a K-Pop song comes out bashing him and a women filled mob comes to his games to try to ruin his career. In comes Camille Salang, a girl Nate has been trying to woo for AGES... And he gets his chance, but it's going to be while she investigates who is leading the Lynch mob. And like any good "will they, won't they?" romance... These two HAVE SO MUCH CHEMISTRY.

I loved this book so much I read it twice (both in binge sessions). I highly recommend this for the fun, fast paced nature and hot romance. Melanie Ting knows how to write a good sports romance. This is a top read for me in this grand ole year of 2022. Pick it up! Support Canadian! WOO!

Five out of five stars.

Before anything else, letting one fact out of the way. I def have a bias going in off the bat. Filipino FMC, yasss!! Yay for representation!😁

Now that's out of the way, I have to say I quite enjoyed this. Yes, the characters are young, quite young for my taste, so I have to shift things in my head to keep a regular reminder of their age which helped. I say they acted, talked and behaved for people their age. I'm old, what do I know about young 'uns of today. I did like the growth of both MCs, esp Nate's. I liked the chemistry between them. I liked their healthy attitude about s3x. I liked how they started out as friends first, and it really showed in their banter.

I liked how this didn't get bogged down with too much hockey details. Just enough that even I, who's not really a fan but still enjoys a game or 2 here and there, can follow and can even picture how they played out.

I appreciate that nothing was overplayed for the sake of angst. Would I have wanted a grander gesture at the end? And something not as cheesy? Yes, but in the end, I was ok with it. I thought for their age, it was the best they could do... perhaps?

Lastly, kudos to the author for capturing the Filipino family dynamics, the culture (even around how Camille can't stay overnight at Nate's #IYKYK😉), the food and all that jazz.

I'm a big fan of the Vancouver Vice series and it's great to see Nate finally get his book!

Camille finds herself in a sticky situation when, while in the middle of a bondage scene with her boyfriend, she decides she is done with the relationship and breaks up with him. Unfortunately he doesn't want to hear it, and leaves her in handcuffs while he goes into another room to work and let her think things over. Desperate to get out of the situation, she's able to reach her phone and calls the last person she wants to but the guy she knows will help her out - Nate, a teammate of Marty, her sister Elaine's boyfriend. Nate shows up to the rescue, for which Camille is grateful, but she's clear with Nate that she doesn't want to date him for 2 reasons - 1) he's a player and 2) he only dates Asian women and she won't go out with a guy who sees women from different Asian countries as interchangeable. Nate has a lot of growing up to do before Camille will go out with him.

When one of Nate's former dates starts badmouthing him for dating Asian women and a K-pop group makes a song about him, a group of ladies starts showing up at hockey games with signs and banners saying 'We Hate Nate'. Now Nate's the one in a bind, with a PR problem his hockey team isn't thrilled about and someone who's out to get him - and he doesn't know who. To return the favours that Nate's done for her recently, Camille offers to help him find out which woman is badmouthing him and in doing so, starts to get to know the real Nate, not just the player persona he presents. Camille helps him figure out why he dates Asian women exclusively (because he's really not a bad guy) and she also realizes she's attracted to him, leading to some sexy fun between them and for Nate, discovering that Camille is the one woman he could see himself with permanently.

There's definitely more sex in this book than in others in the series but it totally fits with Nate and Camille's characters and they have great chemistry together. Camille is Filipino and I enjoyed seeing her family, her culture (especially the food) and how they welcome people into their homes (Nate and Marty get quite spoiled). Camille and Nate figure out who is behind the 'hate Nate' campaign and in doing so become close themselves, leading to their own happy ending. The author writes great hockey romances and this is another winner in the Vancouver Vice series!

I Hate Nate is a great addition to Melanie Ting's Vancouver Vice series!

Nate Jones is living his best life. He's a rising star on the Vancouver Vice hockey team and he has his sights set on the NHL. When out of the blue a group of women boo him during a game, it gets under his skin and he plays horribly. With it being one of the most critical times of the season, his coach decides the best place for him is the bench until he figures out why this is happening.

Knowing that he needs help, he turns to the one woman he thinks might help him, Camille Salang. He continually asks her out, but she's not about to get involved with him given his ego. Not only does Camille like trying to solve mysteries, Nate did help her out of a jam, so really, it's the least she can do.

While these two work together to figure out which of Nate's ex-girlfriend's is responsible, they learn a lot more about one another and they both start seeing one another in a different light. Will this exercise help Nate to grow up a bit?

There is something about the way that Melanie Ting writes that draws you into the story. You're immersed in the world of the characters and you really get to know them and how they tick. I enjoyed seeing the growth in Nate as the story went on and I also appreciated how Camille was open-minded especially given she had a definite idea of who Nate was. I'm already ready for another book in this series!

I enjoyed the undeniable attraction between Nate and Camille as well as the friendship that developed between them in I Hate Nate. I didn’t know how Nate would be redeemed, but reading from his point of view was helpful in understanding him. I do think he learned and understood why his dating habits were viewed with suspicion. I also liked that the author, Melanie Ting, showed that there is hypocrisy and that one of the minor secondary (maybe tertiary?) characters also had stereotypes about Canadians.

Worth the wait! It was great to get back to the Vancouver Vice, and Nate was a trip! Melanie Ting gave us two characters who were looking for themselves and romance and found both, and I was thrilled to be taken along on the ride.
