Summary: In five chapters, this informative text provides the reader with an overview of the rock cycle and the three major types of rocks.
Writing Trait: Ideas – Students would benefit from this book as they are in the prewriting stage of developing an informative/explanatory text. I would ask students to notice how the writer remains on topic and answers our questions. In addition, students could view the visual diagrams that are utilized, which will help students understand how they can draw illustrations to clarify concepts for their readers.
Reading Component: Vocabulary – There are 18 vocabulary words on the first page of this text. The author encourages the reader to find these words in the text and figure out what they mean. In the classroom, these words could be included on the Earth Science Word Wall. Students could then create word posters on their assigned word to help the class understand and define each term.
