She breezed into the Bahamas as lightly as a silver-blond cloud in a clear blue sky. Looking as harmless as a hummingbird, hiding behind a facade of featherbrained chatter, she was determined to rest, to let no one -- nothing -- ruffle her sleek feathers.
A deceptively beautiful, brainy, self-possessed world traveler, Kendall James had weathered war and revolution with scarcely a quiver. Surely a whirlwind romance was the last thing she was looking for. But now, gazing up into Hawke Madison's steely gray eyes, she was suddenly afraid -- afraid because the predatory heat of his desire echoed her own nameless yearnings, warning her she had met her match, and that had never--ever-- happened to her before.
Kay Hooper (aka Kay Robbins) was born in California, in an air force base hospital since her father was stationed there at the time. The family moved back to North Carolina shortly afterward, so she was raised and went to school there.
The oldest of three children, Kay has a brother two years younger and a sister seven years younger. Her father and brother are builders who own a highly respected construction company, and her mother worked for many years in personnel management before becoming Kay's personal assistant, a position she held until her untimely death in March 2002. Kay's sister Linda works as her Business Manager, Events Coordinator, and is playing a major role in the creation and operation of The Kay Hooper Foundation.
Kay graduated from East Rutherford High School and attended Isothermal Community College — where she quickly discovered that business classes did not in any way enthrall her. Switching to more involving courses such as history and literature, she also began to concentrate on writing, which had been a longtime interest. Very quickly hooked, she asked for a Christmas typewriter and began seriously working on her first novel. That book, a Regency romance titled Lady Thief, sold to Dell Publishing in 1980. She has since published more than 60 novels and four novellas.
Kay is single and lives in a very small town in North Carolina, not far from her father and siblings. Deigning to live with her are a flock of cats — Bonnie, Ginger, Oscar, Tuffy, Felix, Renny, and Isabel — of various personalities who all like sleeping on manuscripts and whatever research happens to be spread across Kay's desk. And living amongst the many felines are two cheerfully tolerant dogs, a shelter rescue, Bandit, who looks rather like a small sheepdog, and a Sheltie named Lizzie.
i ridiculously enjoyed this! a good light read. and omg his scar, too funny that he'll never know its origins, and of course as a reader we won't either but apparently it's hilarious. i loved the romantic man hawke, the owner of an island and i liked his determined spirit. i didn't like the way he manhandled kendall so much tho. that was excessive and he could've found another way to get what he wanted, not cool. i feel there could've been more to the girl, her adventures and stories were great but all we got was that she was beautiful and loved animals and children. that's all well and good but i didn't really feel like there was enough to get her completely. basically if a handsome, gorgeous, self made, strong, wealthy, and capable man bought me a tiara and wanted to give me romance every day, i wouldn't question it! haha.

I just barely finished it. This one did not age well and wasn't that great to begin with. A supposedly well travelled, hyper capable woman doesn't seem to have a career of her own but spends her life following her mining engineer father to dark corners of the globe. She's completely incapable of articulating her own needs and allows herself to be sreamrolled by the hero.
The hero supposedly believes in romance but needs to "make a deal" not to force her. But still ends up overriding what she wants under the pretense of sweeping her off her feet because she doesn't know what she wants.
If romances like this were popular then I can understand why we need to have conversations about consent now.
This was another winner. I just love this author. She writes wonderful characters and great storylines in every book. She has been my favorite author since I read her first book in the 90s. My favorite is her mysteries and love stories. I love even to read them again. I highly recommend all her books to everyone who loves a good love story of a ghost stories and murder. Diana Romano
Early romance from the glitz-and-glamour days where the men showed mastery and the women let them. The heroine plays dumb blonde because it's easy, but she's really clever and competent. The hero is smart and aggressive, but it's supposed to be attractive, because the heroine is attracted to him. He gives her gifts to show how nice he really is. I read the whole thing, but I'm not sure why. I never saw what she saw in him. It's entertaining.
Sooooooo bad but…. I read it in one sitting. Love me some good ol smut. But why did he have to insinuate that he’d just put a baby in her after their first time together (+ her first time having sex)???? I’m sorry, I get these books are just inherently cringey but EW WHAT WHY

This is one of my favorites of Kay's earlier works. I loved the characters. This is a book if it is in the used bookstore where I work, I will recommend to customers who want something light and funny.
FS: “Hawke Madison listened absently to his manager enthusiastically reading the names of important guests for the summer, his mind only half on the conversation.”
