Shannon Brown was running for her life! Touched by the fragile stranger, Derek Ross agreed to help her elude her pursuers. He never could resist a lady in distress, but the ferocity of his desire for Shannon stunned him... and mystified her. She'd known so much hurt -- how could his promises be more than words written on the wind? Derek's voice calmed her fear, but his touch excited her, made her long to be held, to hear another heartbeat beneath her ear. When he called her beautiful, she knew it couldn't be true -- and yet in the mirror of his passion-shadowed eyes, she saw that it was. Shannon felt reborn in the arms of the man who lived by no one's rules, but feared trusting Derek might cost her more than her heart. Drawn into an elusive world of danger and deception, Shannon felt her soul's scars healed by the wildfire of ecstasy, but she had to know the truth: was the man who'd made her a woman hers to keep, or only a cherished illusion?
Kay Hooper (aka Kay Robbins) was born in California, in an air force base hospital since her father was stationed there at the time. The family moved back to North Carolina shortly afterward, so she was raised and went to school there.
The oldest of three children, Kay has a brother two years younger and a sister seven years younger. Her father and brother are builders who own a highly respected construction company, and her mother worked for many years in personnel management before becoming Kay's personal assistant, a position she held until her untimely death in March 2002. Kay's sister Linda works as her Business Manager, Events Coordinator, and is playing a major role in the creation and operation of The Kay Hooper Foundation.
Kay graduated from East Rutherford High School and attended Isothermal Community College — where she quickly discovered that business classes did not in any way enthrall her. Switching to more involving courses such as history and literature, she also began to concentrate on writing, which had been a longtime interest. Very quickly hooked, she asked for a Christmas typewriter and began seriously working on her first novel. That book, a Regency romance titled Lady Thief, sold to Dell Publishing in 1980. She has since published more than 60 novels and four novellas.
Kay is single and lives in a very small town in North Carolina, not far from her father and siblings. Deigning to live with her are a flock of cats — Bonnie, Ginger, Oscar, Tuffy, Felix, Renny, and Isabel — of various personalities who all like sleeping on manuscripts and whatever research happens to be spread across Kay's desk. And living amongst the many felines are two cheerfully tolerant dogs, a shelter rescue, Bandit, who looks rather like a small sheepdog, and a Sheltie named Lizzie.
"Outlaw Derek" is the story of Shannon and Derek. Mysterious and elusive Derek's peaceful sleep is disturbed one night by a nervous Shannon, who is on a run from dangerous assasins and is always having a stroke of bad luck. Shannon's self worth has been beaten out by the people and circumstances in her life,so much that she finds herself expendable. How the sweet hero Derek falls for her, while making her love herself too is the story. One of the better books in this series. Loved the alpha and mysterious hero clubbed with a naive and sweet heroine and lovemaking. I adore when heroes don't hesitate to confess their love, and there are honest feelings. The reveal in the end was surprising- though I really wish this had an epilogue! Safe 4/5
While I much prefer Kay Hooper's Bishop series over her romantic Hagen series... I still enjoy the Hagen series. That being said I found this book incredibly boring, choppy, and just hard to get into. First Kay Hooper book I've come across I didn't care for.
So the story is this: a woman discovers a hidden message at the place she works for some kind of weapon. Because of this, she’s hunted to be executed and runs into the arms of Derek. Derek is I don’t even know what - an ex spy? Unsure. But anyway, she seeks his protection and there our story begins.
Listen, instalove sometimes works for me, okay? Sometimes I’m impatient. But not within the same what? 24 hours? 48 hours? of meeting can I believe this super smart experienced man admits to falling in love with the heroine. Especially because the heroine is extremely self conscious and has about 0 self esteem. It’s actually wild how little the heroine thinks about herself and all because she has a limp. Girl. Come tf on? Like I get it but at the same time this is woman thinks she’s undeserving of love because of a limp? This is to say the heroine gives absolutely nothing for the hero to fall in love with and yet, fall in love he does. The book is short so I’m like whatever let’s see where this goes. Literally… so anticlimactic very little action and honestly pretty boring.
Not to mention all the other oddities. The girl is the daughter of important people apparently but used a fake name - whats the point of bringing that up it served no purpose? And changing jobs so many times - because of why exactly? It just made no sense. It was all these added elements and character details that lead no where and added nothing. By the end I didn’t even sympathize with heroine. Like girl get it together.
Characters were very one dimensional. Did not enjoy the read unfortunately. Way way too underdeveloped.

I chose this book because of the mystery. I love a good mystery. If you love mysteries than you will find that this is a great read. I would recommend this book to everyone who loves a great read.
I had read this book before, a very long time ago. Loved it then and again now. I really could not tell you how long, because I don,t remember.
Another couple and the retirement of another agent. These are good stories but don't binge read them. They follow a formula. Still, an easy way to spend an afternoon.
FINAL DECISION: This story is unrealistic and simplistic but has larger than life characters and a sense of fun and lightness that are enjoyable. The hero is simply adorable.
THE STORY: In the middle of the night a knock comes on the door of Derek Ross, troubleshooter and sometimes government agent. Derek opens the door to find a beautiful woman dressed in an evening gown. Shannon Brown has come to find Derek after fleeing for her life. Someone is trying to kill her and she comes to Derek for protection. In trying to find out who is after the sweet, innocent Shannon, Derek finds that he cannot resist the woman who doesn't believe in her own beauty.
OPINION: I loved this book primarily because Derek is such a sweetheart. Here is an man who is rich, smart, a secret agent and also incredibly considerate the the damsel in distress. This book was originally published as a category romance in the 1980s so it has limitations on content and length, but despite that I love this story. The story is not realistic contemporary -- the entire plot is somewhat incredible, but it has a fun larger than life quality. Everything happens in this book in a matter of days. That being said, I really enjoyed the connection between Derek and Shannon. Shannon is emotionally damaged but her exposure to Derek and his patient and insistent love changes the way she sees herself. The action part of the story is interesting as well. I love these old stories although the tone and innocence of the stories are somewhat dated.
WORTH MENTIONING: Josh and Raven make significant appearances here.
CONNECTED BOOKS: OUTLAW DEREK is book 6 in the Hagen series. This book can be read as a standalone although all of these books are better as part of the series.
"New York Times bestselling author Kay Hooper mixes suspense and romance in this classic novel of two unlikely souls who find love on the run.
After asking the wrong people the wrong questions, Shannon Brown barely escapes with her life—and crosses paths with a handsome outlaw who cannot resist a lady in distress. Moved by the troubled stranger, Derek Ross agrees to help Shannon elude her pursuers. But the ferocity of his desire for Shannon stuns him . . . and mystifies her. She’s known so much hurt in matters of the heart—how can Derek be any different?
Drawn into a shadowy world of danger and deception, Shannon is reborn in the arms of a man who lives by no one’s rules. Derek’s voice calms her fears and lowers her guard, making Shannon long to hear another heartbeat beside her own. But trusting Derek might cost Shannon deeply, as she wonders whether this outlaw is hers to keep or merely an intoxicating illusion."
I read anything Kay Hooper writes. Her style, characters and sense of intrigue just appeals to me. I don't try to second guess the author of mysteries, so unless the solution hits me in the face, I prefer to enjoy the book as the author unfolds the story. Kay's books are never predictable and the interaction of the characters is as enjoyable as solving the mystery. I missed this in its original publication in 1988, so was glad to find it republished.
Despite the cheesey (sp?) cover here (updated one is MUCH better, lol), this is a really good book! I have read the others in the series & didn't realize this was part of it...it stands alone fine.
Of course, romance is part of the plot, but sonis treason, military weapons, spies, etc...definitely worth the read.
Not much of a review as I am anti-spoilers, but wanted to make sure my fellow readers (Kay Hooper fans) truly do NOT judge this book by its cover! ;-)
Thank you and ENJOY!

I loved it !!! This is one of Kay Hooper's old Loveswept books that has been reissued. I have always been a fan of Kay Hooper, especially her Loveswept books that were usually interlinking stories. I have no doubt that this was one of the interlinking books. I'm going to go back and find the other books that this story was related to. Outlaw Derek is the story of Derek and Shannon. Shannon was a little too curious at the company she has been working for and asked questions of the wrong people. She was told by someone that she trusts that if she is ever in any trouble to go to Derek Ross and he would help her. The rest of the story is like most of the Loveswept stories so I won't spoil it for you.
For some friends are there through all things good or bad. For others friends are there as long as their own ass is covered. There is a lot more to our Outlaw Derek than meets the eye. Shannon has a lot going on in her little world and things just seem to keep getting worse. All the way to the point she has to decide to leave or stay. Trust or walk to the other side. This one has no Hagen and his pain in the ass schemes or half truths.
Too many of her heroes smoke. Every time one of them lights a cigarette I’m thrown out of the story in disgust. I don’t think I’ll be reading this series again.
