A Callie Morgan and Carolina Slade crossover! (A standalone mystery)

Regret has become ex-Police Chief Callie Jean Morgan's constant companion. Her half-assed, "good ol' boy" replacement in the town of Edisto deepens her guilt at having abandoned her citizens, her officers. When her friends Carolina Slade and Wayne Largo arrive unannounced and determined to uncover why the hell Callie gave up her badge, the group is pulled into a mystery they shouldn't have to solve—but no one else seems to care that the Edisto Witch has turned up dead behind the cemetery.

In fact, Callie and posse have caught the new chief in a lie about the death.

She'll have to decide whether to stay safely retired, save Edisto from an unforeseen criminal element, or take that job offer in her hometown…

The dead still speak to Callie Jean Morgan. Whether she's on the job or not.

She's done it again! This author consistently writes stories that keep me up way past my bedtime. And this one is no exception.

In this one, we return to Edisto Island and pick up the story of Callie who recently resigned her position of police chief. As time has passed, we see she is blaming herself for the fallout of that decision as it has had a domino effect on those she worked with. And soon, she sees the effect that decision had on the town she loves...and it's not good.

This novel is also a crossover that brings Slade and Wayne back into the story. And the contrasting personalities of Slade and Callie always makes for a good story. When Callie questions the death of a newly found friend, Slade and Wayne are thrilled to see a spark of the old Callie and offer their help. Without giving away any of the plot, I will add she finds out how many friends she truly has.

Always love revisiting the characters in Ms. Clark's novels. And having lived in a small town most of my life, I understand only too well the skeletons hidden in closets, usually by those who run the town. Can't wait for the next in this series. Bravo!

With her newest novel, Badge of Edisto, C. Hope Clark brings all of her characters together - Callie Morgan, Carolina Slade and Quinn Sterling.

"Callie Morgan is felling the unintended consequences of her decision to resign as Sheriff of Edisto Beach. Crime is up on Edisto and she feels an overwhelming sense of guilt at all of the lives she's impacted.
When a longtime resident dies, Callie's instincts tell her there's more to it than just a heart attack, but without a badge she'll have to rely on her friends more than ever. Because something evil has come to Edisto..."

This story starts as a slow build. A lot of time is spent in Callie's head rehashing mistakes and guilt and "what-ifs". You know all is not right on Edisto with the new Sheriff and his deputies. But Clark doesn't let you know just how bad it is until near the end. And it's about the worst thing you can imagine.

Clark does another excellent job of describing the mood and feel of the low country island of Edisto. It's a place like no other.

I like that Clark brings all of her characters together. Lots of interesting interactions.

Badge of Edisto is a crossover novel featuring characters from C. Hope Clark's Edisto Island and Carolina Slade series. Released 28th Oct 2022 by Belle Bridge Books, it's 358 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.

This is a well written but slow moving character driven procedural mystery set in a rural coastal/island area in South Carolina. The murder of a local healer/wise woman draws retired former Police Chief Callie back into service due to the incompetence of her replacement in the force. She's joined in crossover support roles by her friends Carolina Slade (and fiance), and a cameo from Quinn Sterling from another crossover series by the author.

The cast of characters is quite large and the author hits the ground at a good clip. It does not work as a standalone in any way whatsoever. For current fans of the author's oeuvre who are up to speed, this is a very well written and plotted book. The characters are deeply developed and feel realistic. With so many related books and characters who feature in crossovers, this would make a great candidate for a long binge/buddy/readathon read.

Four stars. Well written but dark in places. Content includes descriptions of active substance abuse and mental health issues.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Badge of Edisto
I’ll admit I wasn’t happy with the way the previous book Edisto Heat ended. But Clark always leaves a bit of a cliffhanger so you can’t wait to reconnect with her characters in the next book. Badge of Edisto is a crossover bringing in characters from the Caroline Slade Mystery Series and a cameo from Quinn Sterling from Craven County Mysteries. So cool, always love it when Cassie works with Slade.
At first, I wasn’t happy with Cassie Morgan and her moping around and covering herself with guilt. I so wanted her to get counseling or go to AA. But her friends were there for her. Sophia, her crazy yoga instructor best friend, called in the big guns when Slade and Wayne show up at Cassie’s home on a mission to get her out of her funk. Her boyfriend Mark and her old boss Stan are there for her, too. And when the new Chief of Police seems to have lied about the death of an elderly resident that everyone referred to as a witch, Cassie can’t leave it alone.
She pulls herself out of her depression as her friends become her crew to dig deeper. As always, Clark has unexpected twists in the plot. She seamlessly puts all the pieces together, and I inwardly gasped as the true nature of what was behind the death comes to light.
Love the story, and Clark’s flawless word craft. She is one of my favorite mystery writers. One of theses days I’m going to visit Edisto Beach. I feel like I’ve been there already.

Another good crossover between the Callie/Edisto series and the Caroline Slade series (and an appearance from Quinn Sterling, from the Craven County series, which I haven’t read). Callie and Slade are always good together, because they are often bad together, and the friction and genuine affection between them is a catalyst for the story. The story builds from a musing, moping Callie distressed over her resignation as sheriff and the bad consequences for the town of that resignation.

Dynamic things start happening after the death of a witchy local with whom Callie connects before the local’s demise. Once the stench of corruption from the new police force hits Callie’s, Slade’s and Slade’s husband Wayne’s noses, the hunt for the why’s begins, and the hunt gets heated.

Fourth gear and burning happens when the real source of criminality comes out in the later phases of the book, and there are some dramatic moments, gunplay and sobering realizations. I think it might be a bit hard for readers unfamiliar with Callie and Slade and their dynamics to immediately get into the work, but it’s not long before it goes from a trot to a gallop.

Time to head back to Edisto! After the last book, I was anxious to see what had become of everyone.

Ms. Clark does not disappoint either. Not only are we back with Callie, but we get a bonus! Callie Morgan, Carolina Slade, and Quinn Sterling show up here and I love a good crossover!

Callie has fled Edisto and crime is taking over. There are some seriously bad people here. I was anxious for her to get herself together. Hit up an AA meeting or something, but get out of this funk! I should never have doubted her friends.

Quite a bit of the story is Callie in her own head with the guilt. And now when she is needed she has no badge. Luckily she does have good friends. And she will need them. But in the end, Ms. Clark does her magic and ties everything up with no confusion and a lot of feelings!

My mother’s family is from here and she loved reading these books. Unfortunately, she never did get to read this last one, but oh the joy these brought her!

Badge of Edisto by C. Hope Clark was a much-anticipated book because I love it when she does crossovers with Carolina Slade and Quinn Sterling. It kind of just adds a more robust element to the book. After the previous book ended, I was left wondering what was going to happen to Callie Morgan. She made the best decision for her at the time. When this book started, I could feel what she was thinking, and after an incident with a town person at a popular gravesite, she was going to be thrown into another case because she never gives up on Edisto. Clark's unique writing comes out in the plot, the suspense, and the details. It takes a lot of talent to write in both the third person and 1st person within one book. This definitely ended on a high note and I shed a few tears as well. I highly recommend this mystery series!

Callie Morgan has turned in her badge. The consequences of that decision expose Edisto Beach to a criminal threat with possible nefarious roots from her successor's past that lead to page-turning thrill ride plot twists.

C. Hope Clark's skill at crafting series crossover novels weaves places, people and backstory with a new mystery to solve. Lead female characters from all three series set in the author's home state of South Carolina appear as the plot unfolds. And it works. Callie Morgan and Carolina Slade share near equal billing in the drama that engulfs Edisto. Quinn Sterling from the Craven County mysteries makes a cameo but important contribution to the investigation.

Nearly every emotion comes into play between these pages. Regret. Guilt. Fear. Anger. Hatred. Humor. Love. Badge of Edisto affirms what human beings are capable of and can rise above.

C. Hope Clarke does it again! There are so many intriguing hooks in her books which keep me an avid fan and “Badge of Edisto” is no exception.
The descriptions of Edisto and it’s denizens are vivid and real.
I was totally involved in solving the mystery and as usual failed miserably.
All five W’s - Who, What, When, Where, Why, and one H, How, are competently handled.
In addition to an intricate plot, Ms. Clarke spices up her narrative with sly dollops of humor, moments requiring Kleenex, romance and more ……
I hate it when I come to the end of a truly enjoyable book but am thankful that this author is extremely prolific and it won’t be long before another C.Hope Clark mystery will be published.

Eagerly awaited, and just as happily consumed. I love this series and the variety of well developed characters who make the stories come to life. It was interesting to have visitors from the Carolina Slade series and cameos from Craven County in Badge of Edisto, but Callie, for all her faults and all the times I want to slap her hard and tell her to get over herself, is an endearing and compelling character. While all the books can be read alone for the mystery they tell, the series is wonderful in the ongoing growth of the characters and the relationships between them. Can't wait for book 10.

This is book 9 in the Edisto Island Mystery series. It contains characters from her crossover series. Callie Morgan, Carolina Slade and Quinn Sterling are all visiting since Callie resigned her job as Police Chief. She is now regretting that decision. During the visit a dead body turns up and the group catches the new chief in a lie about the death. They get dragged into the investigation and someone in town isn't happy that Callie is back working with the police. This book can be read as a stand alone but you will get more into the relationships of all the characters if you have read some of the previous books in either series.

Best Callie Morgan book ever!
Same as her friends Sophie and Slade, I was getting weary of her fears, her sadness, her walls.
Finally a book ending with some joy.
I was prepared for Callie to receive some guidance from beyond, maybe I missed it.
If I had my way, this would be the last Edisto book for a long while, if not the end period.
Go out on a high note.
*Note top of page 55 reference...cute, cute, cute.
And a neat nod to the Craven books.

I just love C. Hope Clark's series and her writing is so amazing. I don't know how she comes up with so many story ideas, but I'm sure glad she does! I loved this next episode of Edisto and how she included a cross over from Craven County. These mysteries are so intriguing and interesting, the characters are so well developed and entertaining. Can't wait to see what happens next!

Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for a temporary, digital ARC in return for my review.

This is book #9 in the Edisto series and I think it is my favorite book so far. I even smiled with a few tears at the end. I definitely think reading the books in order will benefit the readers, but it could be a stand alone. I love the author’s style of writing and short chapters. Her books are a breeze to read and all of the characters become so familiar that I want to ride to Edisto and see if I can find them! 🤗 Great work C. Hope!

Having been to this part of the country, I always enjoy reading books set in this area. As I have not read the previous books in this series, I was a little lost with some of the characters. However, the book was a great mystery with an interesting plot. . I will plan to go back and read the other books in the series.

A Satisfying Read

Book number 9 in the Edisto Island series is my favorite one yet. It ties up a lot of loose ends and suggests new plot lines and character development for some of my favorite fictional people. There were surprises in this one that had me cheering for characters I've come to care about. Five stars isn't enough!

This is the 9th book in series and, despite claims on Kindle, it is not TTS enabled.
The characters are well developed, the personal anguish well detailed, the world building meticulous, and the investigations well done. It's probably an addictive page turner for those with better vision.

Loved it. So wonderful to be back in the company of familiar characters. I haven't read all the books in either series, but have thoroughly enjoyed the ones I have. Some interesting new people and of course, some bad guys. Thanks so much to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley. It was a delight to revisit Edisto Island. My review is voluntary.

I'm doing a summary of the nine books I've read in the Edisto Island Mysteries. I love the fact the Callie has trials in her life. Not simple, but major. She's a person, not a perfect MC. It makes you live her life and feel her pain.
You won't be disappointed.
