Arthur, the mutt, loves to help. He helps fetch slippers, fix Melanie's bike, plant a garden, and bake a cake. The family is not sure that his help is any help at all. Grandpa decides that they must teach him to do these things properly. Whenever Arthur puts away his slippers, tidies his basket, and fetches the paper he is rewarded with hugs and dog biscuits. One morning Arthur does all three things without being told. No one is awake to give him his reward, so he goes in the kitchen and gets his own. The family wakes up to find him eating a two foot high sandwich.

Everyone has problems learning how to do things right. I love this book, because it is mostly teaching the 'educators' how to teach those who already want to help.
The illustrations are humorous. Amanda Graham tells another story with them. When I read this book to children we have to read it a couple of times to see the cats story.
