But that’s exactly what Sparks has been doing this past year. And it sucks.
Now living on a distant planet with a transient population, ducking in and out of spaceport dive bars, mixing with pirates, bounty hunters, and criminals, she’s successfully become just another being in the crowd.
But eking out a living at the very fringes of society is not the life of her dreams. Especially for someone with her powers.
So when a stranger makes her an offer she can’t refuse … An adventure she’s been desperate to have … Is now the right time for her to return to the planet-hopping, high-risk thrill-ride that used to be her life? Is now the time for her to step from the shadows and face the galaxy head-on?
Galactic Terror is the first book in a series of fast-paced, high-action space opera / science fantasy thrillers.
Michael Robertson is an author and blogger. He has had several short stories published, including one with HarperCollins. He is the author of Crash - http://michaelrobertson.co.uk/crash--...
Galactic Terror grabbed my attention from the first page and kept me intrigued throughout the book. I’ve already downloaded the next book in the series.

Summary: After sparks and Reyes left the Shadow Order things have never been the same. Sparks was changed in ways she isn’t willing to acknowledge because it could place both of them in more danger. Reyes is battling with what she perceives as her failures and continues to fight her own dangers. Their team is broken leaving Sparks to make decisions on her own trying to keep them afloat, but her actions may have further ramifications than she knows.
This was a wonder space odyssey that takes the reader to new worlds and situations to boggle the mind. I will be waiting for the next book in the series!
I loved this action packed first book in the new space opera adventure, even though I had not previously read The Shadow Order series. I loved that the main characters are women, and that apart from the tense moments there are many shared moments of trust building between our couple. Sparks and Reyes had failed at their last mission with the shadow order and both were riddled by guilt, taking on the blame for the failed venture. Reyes kept replaying the simulation and trying to somehow beat their failure, turning into a recluse on Acoolter where they had gone to hide out. On the other hand Sparks was doing her utmost to give her all the time she needed to get her act together once again, and she did this by playing droneball and winning in order to gain the credits they needed to live through another week. Her prowess attracted the attention of a powerful group who invited her to take part in a tournament which would leave her with credits for the rest of their lives if she won. Spark went for this, all the while keeping her gaming and many other things secret from Reyes. She travels to Stargart, for the tournament and has to fight for her very life as assassination attempts are made on her life, but through all of it she realises that working together rather than apart is what would see them through their problems and that they could only do this through total trust in one another. I love the character of Faz Went and the lovely Hat and the lessons he tried to teach them. I love the twist the story takes of the gamer being played all along and I look forward to the next book whereby I hope Sparks and Reyes get their retribution.
This is where we find Sparks and her companion and partner Reyes on an out-of-the-way edge of the universe space station. This place had its own rules and laws, and this place was not so little. A tourist destination, a trading post, and a place to lay low, and they had never heard of the Silent Order, and so they stayed. They have been here for over a year because their mission for the Silent Order didn’t go so well. Sparks had almost died, and because of her life-saving surgery, she now had a new talent that she did not dare tell anyone. And Reyes, well, she could not get over that mission. She even created a simulation of that mission, and every day, she tried to beat it. Sparks knew Reyes needed to heal, and as they say, time heals all wounds. So Sparks used her new talent to gamble and win at Droneball. Just enough to pay the bills and pay off those who needed to be paid off.
We’ve been here in this reality before, or at least I have, and I liked it then, and I like it now. The physical world-building gives you just enough to create a vague image in your mind. The ethereal world-building is personal at best. The character’s interaction is believable. The character’s history, as far as this story goes, is a part of the story.
In this character’s story, Sparks’ story continues after being introduced in the Silent Order series. So yes, this story has science fiction, space exploration, and military, and it easily fits into the space opera category. But I think the author/publisher could have added action and adventure to the genre list. I give this tale five stars out of five stars.
Reading Galactic Terror has convinced me of two truths, first I need to get busy reading the Shadow Order series, second, I’ll read and get addicted to any series Michael Robertson produces – heck if he chose to write a romance story/series I’d get addicted to it. To say Michael is a first-rate storyteller is a serious understatement, he can cross genres and produce addicting series/stories in each genre, this is now the third active series of his that I’ll be following closely.
Galactic Terror follows the adventures of Sparks and Reyes as they come to grips with personal tragedy/PTSD and a struggle to survive. Speaking of their survival, this is the focus of the story and to go into any detail would create the potential for spoilers.
If you enjoy Michael Robertson’s stories this is a must read, and if you are new to Michael’ writing, but love sci-fi grab a copy and settle in for an entertaining wild ride through a couple of planetary systems. Lastly, if none of those categories fits you but you are looking for an entertaining read, give yourself a copy, you won’t be sorry.
Having read over twenty of Mr. Robertson’s books in his several dystopian series, I was not surprised that he is equally at home writing in the space opera genre. His characters are always strong and well-defined, as he dives deeply into their personalities and emotions; I am pulled in at once and feel like I’m part of the story. This story centers around two characters from the Shadow Order series, exploring the ups and downs in their relationship, as they chase, and are chased by, bad guys in a deadly, action-packed, roller coaster ride that kept me turning pages to the wee hours. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and look forward to the next book in the series. I received an ARC – this review is my honest opinion. I purchased a copy to support this great author. As noted by several other reviewers, I also need to check out his Shadow Order series.
This was an Amazon Prime free read. It was a quick read.
I gave it a shot. It is part of a series and did end with a path to additional adventures. I was not all that impressed with the plot. I thought there would be more segments to the "contest" and more interactions with some of those opponents. All too obvious that our hero would loose the "contest" otherwise there would not be additional missions. The mass defeat/destruction of waves of drones just came across to me as a big video game.
I won't be going out of my way to read additional books in this series.
It reads like somebody is narrating a Saturday morning action cartoon, and the author admits he grew-up on that stuff. There is nothing profound about the story that will be remembered by me past a few weeks. I found myself eager to finish the story so I could move on to something more intelligent. Where is the proof reading nowadays? Plenty of annoying typos and grammatical errors. One thing I found particularly annoying is some of the characters names; Sparks, Hat, and Faz Went sound too much like actual words and caused me to frequently stumble in the reading.
I am a huge Michael Robertson fan and have read almost all his series. This is a new genre for me to read of his. I have to say that I really enjoyed his characters who were gay, were battle partners, and have some relationship issues. There are misunderstandings, manipulations, danger, surprises and a good ending. I thought the story had a lot of action, a lot of aliens, and a lot of heart. I would recommend it.
I am not sure I read the same book others did. Lot of unnecessary details in some places and not enough in other areas. Very wordy without saying anything., like someone had to make it so many words, so went back and added a lot of filler words and descriptions. The start of the book was great and I was super excited and already ready to be sucked in, unfortunately that didn't last very long. The action was subpar.
Galactic Terror is an interesting story, maybe something similar to Andre Norton, or possibly James H. Schmidtz stories. Pretty good scifi too, so well worth the read ifyou're a fan of either one of the mentioned author's works, and are a scifi fan. I'm probably going to read more in this series.
The opening novel in what could become a very good series, character and story line very strong and this the first book setting the scene very well. I enjoyed it and have purchased volume two to find out the next instalment . I enjoyed it and recommend it to others
Absolutely brilliant story full of suspense and surprises. Plenty of full on action and adventure for the main characters. Really enjoyed this first book in what promises to be another great series from this author. Definitely recommend
Another excellent story from Michael Robertson, once started it was an in to the early hours read. The twists and turns kept me enthralled in the characters, I’d highly recommend reading this and the previous series Shadowlands.
I came across Michaels Shadow Order “Opera” series. Fantastic books. Really suck you in. Galactic Terror includes two of the Shadow Order cast. I’ve preordered Book two. Can’t wait.
I really enjoyed reading this book and look forward to the next book. this is one of those authors I have never read anything from before but I am glad I did. I try to find a new author of a new set of books to read every three books as you never
Galactic Terror is an action-packed, fast-paced space opera! The terrifying and/or horrific events that Sparks must endure are stunning. I was particularly amazed at how she survived the ‘death zone’. There are plenty of extremely different beings, some are nice while others are evil. I highly recommend this first in the series.
