In Jesse's Will , seventy-three-year-old Jesse Latimer tells a story almost six decades old. In 1963, at the age of fourteen, Jesse enjoys an idyllic life of comfort and privilege on the South Carolina coast until a devastating tragedy upends his world. Grief-stricken, Jesse is forced to leave his beloved Simon Beach to live in the North Carolina Mountains with his conservative uncle, a devoted member of a cultish, fundamentalist religion. Jesse tackles bullies, racism, misogyny, child abuse, fanatics, and criminals, but he still manages to fall in love and show the community what one "willful child" can do.
This book was hard to put down. Jesse is such an appealing and lovable character. You will laugh cry and and scream with him and find comfort in Jesse’s wisdom and humanity.
Once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down. It was such an honest, sometimes sad, other times hopeful, but nevertheless a heartfelt coming of age story. I loved every minute of it. Bravo Travis!
